After the season-opening ambush, CHICAGO P.D.’s Intelligence undertakes a manhunt—on the Wednesday, October 2 episode, “Blood Bleeds Blue”—to get justice for Detective Emily Martel.

Along the way, they’ll encounter patrol officer Kiana Cook (new series regular Toya Turner), who works alongside Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger)—and the becomes the newest CPD officer to join the team.

“Kiana Cook, she’s a breath of fresh air,” CHICAGO P.D. showrunner Gwen Sigan tells Give Me My Remote. “She’s shaking up the unit a little bit because she’s just so different. She’s coming from a different headspace, which is [that] she’s been a patrol officer for a while. When she gets to work with us, she sees this different side of policing that she really falls in love with. And the team, in turn, also falls in love with her, and the way that her mind works.”

“She’s coming from a background of being a patrol officer and also having tactical experience…which is a little bit like SWAT,” she continues. “And it means that she’s very active, as far as a police officer, and she likes to be the first on scene. She likes to be boots on the ground. And it really becomes an asset for us.”

Despite the tragic circumstances of her introduction, Cook also quickly bonds with her new team. “Personality-wise, it’s been fun because she represents this whole new person you get to know,” Sigan previews. “[We’re] also getting to see how she interacts with a lot of different characters on our show. We see sort of an instant kinship with Ruzek; they kind of have to go through something together, and we see this instant connection.”

“Then we also see this really fun friendship with Torres,” she continues. “Her and Torres are just kind of finding a bit of themselves in each other…[It’s] just one of those [natural] understandings. I don’t think they have to say much to each other, and they just kind of understand who each other is and see each other. So that’s been really nice and has shaken up, I think, new dynamics.”

CHICAGO P.D., Wednesdays, 10/9c, NBC
