About Last Night…CHICAGO MED, CHICAGO FIRE, THE SUMMIT, and More

Let’s talk about Wednesday night’s TV!
CHICAGO MED: Well, this was an emotional roller coaster.
First of all, ouch, ouch, ouch to Jessy Schram’s performance, especially when she broke down in the elevator. I was so worried the mother wouldn’t make it, and it somehow hurt even more than expected when those fears were realized. (And what a gorgeously shot/framed scene of her breakdown in the elevator at the end.)
And even “Joan” being an AI that was mirroring the man’s anxiety about his surgery was so much. It was realistic! But how gutting and scary that this is where we are.
I really appreciated that Ripley apologized to Charles, though, because he was lashing out at everyone and Charles still arguably knows him better than anyone. Owning up to his behavior was important.
(The light moment of the episode was the reveal that Frost was a child star. Oh my God.)
THE FLOOR: These people are trying to bluff their expert categories?!?! Like, on one hand, find, I guess you can gamble you’ll be in control, but that’s placing a lot of faith in someone else not knowing what you claimed to know. My goodness.
I did find the Broadway round the most interesting one, even if it was hard. I assume, for instance, THE SOUND OF MUSIC one was legit, and I would have guessed it based on my knowledge of the musical, but that’s not the image I have when I think of that playbill.
CHICAGO FIRE: Okay, it’s very nice that Pascal was kind to the team when Ritter was hurt. It almost makes up for him doubting Kidd. (Almost.)
But way to go Mouch. What a quiet MVP. He stepped up big here; he didn’t just passively defend Kidd, he risked a lot. He could have used the opportunity of Pascal doubting Kidd to try to further himself and his career. Instead, he warned Kidd and made an effort to plead a case on her behalf with proof. He knew his exact audience and how to make his point.
Damon was a real disappointment, though. It’s frustrating, because I do wish we got more of/with him, but I’m also not sorry to see him go. (But good luck to Severide with getting that parting shot out of his head.)
I’m not sure if it was an acting/writing/directing choice (or several), but it was so, so, so obvious from the very first scene who burned down the restaurant. I wish it was a little more vague or mysterious if that was going to be such a big focus of the hour.
THE SUMMIT: The Tony situation in episode 1 was heartbreaking, but them having to cross the bridge and cut it down while the final person was walking across was diabolical. Poor Bo; he deserved better.
But I was also super skeptical and it felt like a test within a test. Because, really, why would you do that, both to Bo and to lose that money, too? It felt like they were supposed to defy the instructions and still push to keep him and the money, and no one stopped to think, “Do we really HAVE to do this?” (Yes, I thought of the Milgram experiment.)
Legitimately cheered when Shweta was voted out. Her behavior when Tony was having a medical emergency was vile, absolutely grotesque. And she was negative and brought the group down. (Dennis is on my list, too, because eesh. And talking a big game about being able to carry two boards and dropping both? Mess.)

CHICAGO P.D.: Poor Kevin. First and foremost, this man is struggling. I know we don’t see everything, and, to be fair, almost everyone is reeling a bit (especially) now, but it’s kind of sad Atwater is so obviously flailing and overwhelmed and his friends aren’t clocking it.
I’m intrigued by his relationship with Val and do hope we get to see it explored more, though. But, no matter what, I’m just glad he had a little bit of a distraction for the night.
