As Kate Silva (Juliana Aidén Martinez) settles into her quasi-new job at the 16th precinct on LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS, the detective will be getting to know her new colleagues a little better.

“What’s going to be cool is [that] you see us interact with each other as a squad,” Martinez tells Give Me My Remote. “So you see we have different dynamics, and being able to partner up. You will definitely see some partnering with Velasco and how that dynamic plays out, which is—he’s a trip. I love working with him. I think it’s a really cool dynamic.”

“But you’re gonna see the whole squad kind of get to play individually and be paired in different ways with each other,” she continues. “I think that’s gonna be really exciting.”

The Velasco (Octavio Pisano) dynamic was set up in the season premiere when Silva shared her backstory with her fellow detective. But which of the other dynamics surprised Martinez the most?

“It’s not meant to be a cop-out, but I would say all of them,” she says. “I didn’t have expectations on any of them, and they’ve all surprised me, in really delightful and cool ways.”

The actress notes the writers are still figuring out how much of Silva’s personal life viewers will see. “I think we’re gonna figure it out together,” she acknowledges with a laugh.

But they did have important conversations about her overall arc this year and what they were hoping to showcase in season 26. “We did talk about the times—these are not light times,” Martinez says. “For many people, they’re experiencing that. And the importance of coming in with this sense of action and hope, especially because I think that’s so much of what we need right now. So that was some of the discussions we had: We wanted it to feel relevant and fresh and also authentic.”

“A few things that we really discussed with the team [were] how we wanted that to happen,” she continues. “I think they’ve done a really great job with that so far. So I’m very, very grateful for them.”

Viewers know that Silva’s father has been a cop for decades, rising in the ranks to become a deputy commissioner for the past decade. Could Silva be hoping for a similar trajectory?

“I would say that I think Kate wants a world in which women are safe, in which women are free, and can feel safe,” Martinez says. “Now, where that takes her, to be honest, I don’t know yet. But I do know that Kate wants to change the world for the better and even create an era of hope.”

Wherever the future takes Silva, Martinez is currently enjoying her time filming the long-running series. “Episode 6 [in production order] is my favorite that we’ve done so far,” she enthuses. “It’s going to make an impression. I just think it’s a great episode. It’s [been] my favorite to film.”
