CHICAGO P.D.’s Voight (Jason Beghe) has been struggling since his near-death experience at the end of season 11, and things get even more intense on the Wednesday, October 16 episode, “The After.”

“There was a there was an awful, brutal, cruel rapist, something like 15 years ago,” Beghe previews to Give Me My Remote. “There’s very specific things that this criminal does that, his kind of fingerprint, his MO, and I come across something that seems like this guy.”

“It’s particularly triggering for Voight because it was a case that he did not solve—never even had a suspect,” he continues. “He feels like he kind of screwed it up because he took the case so soon after his wife’s passing. At least in retrospect, his perception is he did it to avoid feeling what he felt; that he needed to get to work in order to not go crazy, which means he couldn’t handle the loss that he was forced to confront.”

With the suspect still being out there, “he feels like, because of that hindered state of mind, it might have been why he wasn’t able to catch the guy,” Beghe says. “Now, here it is, all of a sudden, this very specific MO, and it looks like this guy’s back. But why would he have stopped doing this for 15 years? So it’s an interesting, brutal case, but it’s also a [way] for us to get inside of Voight’s personal life.”

The good news? Voight won’t be alone. ASA Chapman (Sara Bues) is along for the ride, whether Voight wants her to be there or not.

“Well, he’s always worked very well with her,” Beghe concedes of the duo’s impromptu partnership. “They’re very open and honest with each other. Sometimes they can butt heads and disagree, but they also get great [results] together. So they enjoy working with each other. There’s an interesting history.”
