FBI International Wes Tyler Booth history

“The Other Hard Part” – When a U.S. ambassador is taken hostage at a TV station in the Netherlands alongside 70 civilians, the Fly Team is forced to work quickly to find out who they’re up against. Meanwhile, Wes works to earn the respect of his new team, on FBI: INTERNATIONAL, Tuesday, Oct. 22 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on-demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on-demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs). FBI: INTERNATIONAL’s Fly Team asked Wes (Jesse Lee Soffer) to be their leader in the season 4 premiere, but “just because they chose it doesn’t mean that they’re not still apprehensive or nervous or uncertain sometimes—mostly Smitty,” Soffer tells Give Me My Remote.

“Once we start rocking and rolling, it’s like, ‘Okay, we’re not always going to do things by the book,’” the actor continues in character. “‘We’re not always going to be within our jurisdiction. We’re gonna, you know, but we’re gonna get it done, and we’re gonna have some fun doing it.”

The team won’t be the only one having fun: Soffer recently started filming scenes with his long-time friend Jay Hayden, who is playing Agent Tyler Booth on the CBS drama.

“His character has a great bit of backstory with Wes,” Soffer previews. “They went through a case together that really went sideways, and Jay’s character, Tyler Booth, got put through the wringer for it, and really took all the heat. They’ve been through some stuff together. There’s a debt there. They feel like they owe each other for certain things, but it’s really complicated.” (And viewers already got a tease of that history thanks to an off-handed mention in the season premiere: Soffer confirms the case is connected to the standoff that went bad, where Wes was cleared of charges…eventually.)

When Booth shows up in FBI: INTERNATIONAL, he “needs the Fly Team’s help [with a] cybercriminal that’s hiding out in Europe,” Soffer teases. “And then all sorts of action ensues from there, along with Bo [Knapp]’s character and other characters as well…it’s a really fun arc and it’s so cool getting to [work with Jay]. He and I have both been on TV for so long, working in different states, different countries; to get to do storylines together now, after reading auditions with each other, 16, 17, years ago, and having that come full circle, is like a dream come true. It’s so cool.”

The premiere also dropped another tidbit about Wes’ past: He spent time in juvenile detention about 25 years ago.

“It’s a backstory for me [playing] the character,” Soffer notes. “It’s not so much backstory that’s playing into the storyline, yet. [We saw it] a little bit with Bo’s character, with Czonka, because he also was a foster kid. And Wes came out of the foster system, and was adopted by a police officer, and that’s kind of how he found his path in life. So in some indirect ways, it plays a role. Once you have that confrontation with Czonka [that] comes back, then maybe we see more of that, but we’re not there yet so far.”

For Soffer, he’s still getting to know Wes a few months into playing the character. So far, the agent is “all work, all day, all night,” he says. “He’s 24/7, FBI. He’s just immersed in his job, and [a personal life is] not the focus right now.”

“I just want the fans to love this show and to love this character and to see what we mine out of these relationships and these dynamics and future episodes,” he says.”The rest remains to be written.”
