GHOSTS Post-Mortem: Mary Holland, Joe Port, and Joe Wiseman Break Down Patience’s Big Decision and Ominous Warning

[Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Thursday, October 31 episode of GHOSTS.]
After a witch trial that didn’t go exactly the way she intended—and sensory overload with the manor as a whole—Patience (Mary Holland) decided to go back to the dirt on the Thursday, October 31 episode of GHOSTS.
“I think she is so overwhelmed by the changes that have happened in the world and is aware that she’s not equipped to roll with them,” Holland tells Give Me My Remote. “She doesn’t have this approach to the world where she’s curious about it, or interested, or open to learning new things. She wants what’s comfortable and what’s comfortable to her is just dirt. And so I’m proud of her for trying, but I think, yeah, it was not for her. And the social relationships that she built with the other ghosts, while I think [they] were impactful for her, the modern world was just too much to make those worth staying.”
Patience also delivered an intriguing, but alarming, tease when she left to go back to the dirt: “Now, I must return to the others.”
That parting shot surprised Holland, who still doesn’t quite know what her character meant by that farewell. “I don’t know what she means, yet, but my reaction to that was love that,” she says. “I love this little breadcrumb drop of others existing somewhere. It’s really exciting, and I think sets up a lot of additional storylines for down the road.”
Holland speculates “there is a whole community of dirt dwellers that she’s referring to” in that final moment. “That could be any[one] from other Puritans, or people who have just been sort of lost to time,” she says. “I think it opens the door to a lot of cool possibilities.”
(GHOSTS co-showrunner Joe Port was mum about what that might mean, too. “We can’t share anything about that yet, but she does mention that—and that is intriguing, we think,” he teases.)
The notion that Patience might not be entirely alone down in the dirt recontextualizes some of what viewers have seen from the character so far. “I think Patience, she’s very lonely,” Holland notes. “We get that from the first episode where she’s so excited about Isaac and Sasappis and having her friends from the ditch again. But I think what it means for her is that she was already a part of a community, and maybe was on the outside of that community, in the dirt and seeking another community, but then realized, ‘Oh no, the community I had was actually pretty great.’”
“And so I almost think that she’s a leader of some kind in that community?” she continues with a laugh. “Maybe a reviled leader, but a leader; she has some status there. And I think when she came out of the dirt, she had no status. And so I think that influenced her decision [to go back home], too.”
Though Patience went back to the dirt, the showrunners expressed an interest in seeing the character again.
“We aren’t done with her,” co-showrunner Joe Wiseman says. “We definitely want to bring her back for stuff. We’re about halfway through shooting the season, so we haven’t quite finished writing everything, and her name comes up a lot; we have a few ideas. I can’t really tease anything…but she’s out there.”
Holland is equally hopeful to return. “I have definitely expressed to them that I would be thrilled to come back at any time,” she says. “So that’s really exciting they’re hoping to bring Patience back because I loved playing her. I think it would be really fun to bring her in every now and then to shake things up…The door is there. And now she knows how to get there from the dirt.”
If she does return, Holland has a specific character she wants Patience to interact with. “I would love to see Patience and Thor really try to connect,” she says. “Because, wow, there’s a lot that…I think the whole Puritan puritanical principles are all about denying and controlling your animalistic urges. And I think Thor represents the primal side of being a human, and so I would be really curious to see those two maybe go on a date.”
But as she bids farewell to the show for now, Holland is simply grateful for the experience. “I loved all the group scenes that I had with all the ghosts, where they were sort of trying to instruct me and inform me and coach me through existing in this modern world,” she says. “But I remember the scenes I did with Brandon Scott Jones were some of the most fun I’ve ever had on set. There was a day after we worked, I remember waking up and being like, ‘Oh my God, my ribs really hurt.’ And then I realized it’s because he was making me laugh so much. He’s just so funny. And those two together, it was just such a fun dynamic to play. So those are some of my favorite moments, those scenes with him.”
