FBI, FBI: MOST WANTED, THE IRRATIONAL

“Doubted” – When the sister of FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) profiler Sydney Ortiz (Lisette Olivera) is the victim of an attempted kidnapping and sexual assault, Sydney seeks help from Isobel and the team in tracking down a meticulous serial offender who leaves no evidence behind, on FBI, Tuesday, Nov. 12 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs). Let’s talk about Tuesday night’s TV!

FBI: Well, that was a terrifying cold open. (And, boy, they could have used an Olivia Benson.)

It was bittersweet watching the episode, though, because we know the team (and the show) was setting up Scola’s permanent partnership. Now, it’s not the case.

It’s also hard to really talk about anything outside of that because so much of the episode specifically focused on Ortiz and setting her up as a long-term character on the show. We learned about—and met!—her family. It actually was a really solid introductory hour for a new regular with interesting information. (I loved the tidbit that she didn’t drink while getting to know people because she didn’t want them to profile her.) But, again, that’s also tainted by the fact we know it’s not lasting. It’s hard to ignore the elephant in the room.

ST. DENIS MEDICAL: SUPERSTORE is one of my very favorite shows, so my bar is very high for anything from this team. The good news? The ensemble is strong, the potential is there. My favorite episode of the bunch they sent out hasn’t aired yet (spoiler alert?), but the first two showed the bones for a solid start. (Though the fact that Wendi McLendon-Covey improvised that cheerleading moment makes it even funnier. I can’t imagine the cast/crew being surprised with that on set.)

FBI: INTERNATIONAL: Oh, Tate. Poor Tate. I’m glad we got to see her out in the field, but what a blow that A) things fell apart so spectacularly and B) she actually jeopardized (and arguably ruined) the case before that fact because she had to go further, physically, than she should have in order to keep herself safe.

It’s also interesting that her first undercover mission was against another agent; nothing like being thrown into the deep end. I’m curious about how they handle future UC ops and when they opt to deploy it next.

THE VOICE: Okay, Bublé’s Knockout round was tough. I’m glad he saved Shye, who absolutely deserved it. I was bummed we were losing Edward, but I’m really glad Reba saved him. I know it’s not as perfect a fit as Edward and Bublé, but there’s real potential there for it to be interesting.

FBI: MOST WANTED: Well, Remy’s threat to Barnes was alarming. On paper, I get it. He’s the boss, she didn’t listen. But she was also right. Was it just the timing that was terrible? Was it that she was so freshly back from uprooting her entire life, grieving—whether she was ready to admit it or not—and Remy wanted to put things in focus for her before things actually spiraled to a dangerous place? Or is this going to come back, down the road, and blow up the team?

Absolutely loved Hana and Barnes bonding, though. They’re the only two original team members left—on- and off-screen—and it was really nice that Barnes opened up specifically to Hana, someone who has known her for this many years. I hope the show continues to lean on that dynamic.

THE IRRATIONAL: I was worried how the show would handle the topic of suicide—after DOCTOR ODYSSEY botched it last week—but the show was respectful in noting the dangers that come with bringing attention to the topic, and didn’t show much of the initial death. (Of course, it also helps they made it clear pretty early it was a murder disguised as a suicide.)

On a real note, I don’t know if there’s a similar organ donor bill in play, but that would be so important. It makes sense that donors skyrocket when the default is to be one versus having to opt in.
