FBI: MOST WANTED’s Roxy Sternberg Previews Barnes’ High-Stakes Return Case: ‘Lives Are at Stake’
November 11, 2024 by Marisa Roffman
FBI: MOST WANTED’s Barnes (Roxy Sternberg) is back with the team in “Pig Butchering” (airing Tuesday, November 12 at 10/9c), and immediately finds herself in a bind when a case comes calling…literally.
“There’s a young girl who is basically working at a call center, doing calls, but ultimately she’s being held hostage with a group of other children,” Sternberg previews to Give Me My Remote. “She calls me, and I say, ‘I know this is a scam call. I’m an FBI agent. Don’t f with me,’ [that] kind of thing. And then she asks me to help her.”
“She’s able to get in contact with me now and again, but people in the call center don’t know that she’s in contact with me,” she continues. “So it’s a chase for me to try and find [her]. There’s a time crunch; their lives are at stake. So I’m desperate to save this young girl.”
By Barnes’ side throughout the hour? Hana (Keisha Castle-Hughes), who is there for the agent personally and professionally.
“It’s great,” Sternberg gushes. “There’s this sisterly love—Keisha and I, we’ve been working on the show for six years now together, and it was just so lovely to have these warm moments where we are connecting on a deeper level outside of being agents. So it was really nice. I felt that was happening on-camera and off-camera.”
“[It’s] just nice to have scenes of me going to her house,” she continues. “I’ve never been to her house, and, actually, a lot of the other cast members have been in her house. She’s had most of them live in her bloody house and I’ve never been there! So just to have some wine and wind down and be real and honest with one another…It was just really nice having these sister scenes. And also playing the apprehension there that [Hana] had at the beginning [and] me, like a dog with a bone: Come on, come along with me. Run, run, run, run with me. And her being led astray as well. It was just really fun. I really enjoyed that.”
Sternberg sees a parallel between Barnes’ grief over her fractured family life—her former wife and kids moved away—and the agent’s determined quest to get to the bottom of the call center operation. “I’ve lost my family, and now I’m trying to save this young girl,” she says in character. “There’s a parallel between me trying to save my marriage, trying to save my children, trying to save myself—and also there’s a distraction there. It’s basically a chase and a hunt. Me trying to find justice, but also me trying to save my family, as well. I feel like there’s some undertones of that [in] me trying to save a young girl.”
After spending weeks away from the team, Sternberg notes Barnes is “hungry” when she rejoins them.
“She’s coming back hungrier than ever,” she says. “She’s being starved of her children and her family. She’s hungry. She wants to throw herself into work. She wants a distraction. She wants to excel. And there’s no stopping her. Remy says [when she brings him this case], ‘Kick this over to [FBI’s] Jubal. This isn’t a case for us.’ And I just want to run with this; I feel like a dog with a bone. I feel like I need to follow through. I need to find justice. I need to know what’s been going on. I need answers. So I think she’s come back hungrier than ever.”
The mood is echoed by Sternberg, who missed the first few episodes due to her maternity leave. “There’s always a feeling of having to adjust,” she says. “We’ve had so many long breaks, [with] the pandemic and the strike; there’s always that adjusting period. And obviously coming back as a very sleepless mother, there’s that adjustment, too. But I’ve been working with these guys for so long, I feel like I’m returning home in some ways. And so it was an adjustment, but it was exciting as well.”
“It’s a lot easier to film a TV show than to be at home with the children, I’ll tell you that,” she continues with a laugh. “So it was a break in some ways. I was happy to go on holiday and be back home [on set]. I felt very happy and very ready and very excited. And they’ve given me this great script to play with. So I also felt hungry.”
