About Last Night…THE EQUALIZER, THE SIMPSONS, and BOB’S BURGERS
December 9, 2024 by Marisa Roffman
Let’s talk about Sunday night’s TV!THE EQUALIZER: Well, Dante and Miles meeting right before a hostile hospital takeover situation, where Dante would get injured and Miles would be taken as a bonus hostage…the timing was basically the most dramatic it could be.
As for the fallout of the triangle, Robyn essentially preemptively breaking up with Miles prompted an interesting reaction in me, but not in the way I expected. As someone who wants Robyn/Dante together, I’m not exactly in mourning over Robyn/Miles fizzling out—but it also doesn’t exactly feel earned, either. And to be clear, their rekindling didn’t feel earned to begin with; it felt like a calculated (TV) roadblock between Robyn and Dante. And yet Robyn was at least intrigued/invested and was being proactive in spending time with Miles; it wasn’t one-sided.
I honestly assumed she would break things off with Miles in this episode because of the danger in her life (or he’d see her bond with Dante and back off), but the notion he’s safe…it’s true, in some ways, but nothing really changed. So rather than letting them actually try and fizzle out or them putting a stop to things for something that felt understandable, we just got…they’re safe. (The breakup was also the best Miles scene the show has done so far, so…)
It would be one thing if they were killing that potential romance to actually give Robyn and Dante their time in the sun, but those two still seem like they’re going to be dancing around each other. And Miles has made it clear he’ll wait for her. I guess we’ll see what’s to come in 2025.
(Cam sticking around for Delilah and Harry buying Mel her own guitar were the relationship highlights of the hour for me, though.)
THE SIMPSONS: This is weird to say about an animated show, but the writers/animators did a really good job of making the episode feel claustrophobic. It felt like Homer was trapped on the plane, with everything around him falling apart, and we were along with him for the (horrifying) ride. (The toe nail clipping from a passenger might have been the worst, though it’s not like anything was really incredible.) We’ve seen the family travel a lot, including on planes, but this was a fun, unique take on it. (And good for Marge for taking the first class seat for herself!!)
BOB’S BURGERS: Oh my God, the flashbacks of young Tina and Louise were so precious. I also really loved the different animation styles utilized for the apology attempt. A sweet episode about how siblings, uh, can drive you a little batty sometimes.
