FBI: INTERNATIONAL Post-Mortem: Jay Hayden on the Threat to Booth’s Family, His New Gig, and Playing Fake Golf with Jesse Lee Soffer

[Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Tuesday, December 10 episode of FBI: INTERNATIONAL.]
Tyler Booth’s (Jay Hayden) first case with the Fly Team hit unnerving close-to-home on the Tuesday, December 10 episode of FBI: INTERNATIONAL.
As Booth traveled internationally in an attempt to stop the reign of terror of Ed Haskins, a cyber extortionist, Haskins set his sights on Booth’s daughter, threatening to expose intimate photos of her if his demands weren’t met.
“I think Tyler Booth doesn’t have a ton of things in his life, but his one thing, his most important thing, is his daughter,” Hayden tells Give Me My Remote. “You can see how reactive he can be when she gets put into danger. Suddenly, professionalism goes out the window a little bit. Which I think a lot of us can relate to: People in our lives that we love [are in danger], we react.”
“So I think moving forward, he’s gonna have to figure out how important this job is, how important keeping his daughter safe is,” he continues. “[What] being around her and just what it’s all worth.”
Thankfully, the team was able to prevent the images from being released. But that doesn’t mean it’ll be the last time viewers see the father-daughter relationship on the show.
“I think she is one of those classic kids who sometimes have to parent their parents,” Hayden says with a laugh. “So it won’t be the last time that Tyler reaches out to his daughter, maybe for some advice and some counseling.”
Booth might need that shoulder to lean on, as he’s officially sticking around with the Fly Team for 90 days—taking orders from his former partner, Wes (Jesse Lee Soffer).
“That’s going to be something fun that you guys will get to watch: Wes is his boss. Is Tyler going to act like that?” Hayden teases. “He’s his boss, so you’re going to follow the orders? You’re going to fall in line? I don’t know. Obviously, Tyler has a much different methodology to catching bad guys and how it’s done. So will that conflict with the rest of the team? Maybe. Probably. Definitely. And we’ll see if they can coexist together.”
Hayden notes that Smitty (Eva-Jane Willis) will be most skeptical of the Fly Team’s new colleague.
“I think a great dynamic that we got to explore, and you can already see it in the first episode—Smitty’s watching him,” he says. “You know Smitty’s like, ‘Hey, I’m keeping it all together. I’m keeping us all on the up and up here, guys. We’ve got to do things the right way.’ And Tyler is definitely not the poster child of doing it the right way. So I think those two characters definitely have some great scenes together coming up, and also some great adversity with each other.”
There will be some time for fun and games though…literally. “Keen as a Bean” ended with Tyler and Wes teeing off on Wes’ golf simulator in the Fly Team office.
“Okay, listen,” Hayden says bursting into uncontrollable laughter when the golf game is brought up. “Do I dare say this?”
The actor takes a beat before continuing. “First of all, Wes Mitchell and the golf and Tyler: Yes, the golf continues, and that competitiveness, definitely. There’s a throughline there.”
“In real life, Jesse kicks my ass in golf every single time we play,” Hayden says of his long-time friend. “Which literally blew up his brain that he had to play that Tyler was better than Wes [in the scene].”
“Honestly, I was watching him eat his soul on set, even [when] we’re pretending to do the swings,” he says with a chuckle. “And he’s like this [mimicking Soffer’s pose and voice], ‘I’m just saying, that drive—he would never be able to outdrive me!’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, man.’ So I take great pleasure when we do the show that Tyler gets to be better than Wes because I am never outdriving Jesse in real life. Ever.”
