ON CALL Post-Mortem: Elliot Wolf and Tim Walsh React to Monica Raymund’s Cameo

[Warning: This post contains spoilers for the series premiere of ON CALL.]
The new Prime Video series ON CALL follows Long Beach police officer Traci Harmon (Troian Bellisario) and her trainee Alex Diaz (Brandon Larracuente) as they patrol the city and navigate their new partnership. But before viewers were introduced to them, they met Monica Raymund‘s Officer Delgado.
In the opening moments of the pilot, Raymund’s Delgado performed what started off as a routine traffic stop. But when she noticed that the woman in the passenger street seemed out of it, she asked everyone to come out of the car. Instead, a man in the backseat opened fire on her, leaving Delgado to die in the street, as the car sped away.
Raymund has a long history with Wolf Entertainment: The actress starred on CHICAGO FIRE for six seasons, and has served as a director on shows like LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT, LAW & ORDER: ORGANIZED CRIME, and FBI, plus performing in the WE podcast series DARK WOODS. She also starred in HIGHTOWN, which ON CALL co-creator Tim Walsh co-executive produced. And it was exactly that combined familiarity that led her to the ON CALL world.
“Monica is an amazing actress, and I worked with her on a previous project I did,” ON CALL co-creator Elliot Wolf tells Give Me My Remote in the video below. “Obviously, she was on CHICAGO FIRE for quite a while. She was a friend of [Wolf Entertainment] from day one…And it was honestly a huge get for us, in our opinion.”
Walsh calls the cameo—which was first teased in the trailer—a “classic sleight of hand.”
“We want the audience to think that this is going to be a show about this character, and [then you’re surprised by this death],” Walsh says. “Going back to Hitchcock and PSYCHO and Janet Leigh, who’s murdered in the shower. Well, we didn’t get that far with Monica Raymund, but that idea.”
Were you surprised by the opening scene?
