About Last Night…ST. DENIS MEDICAL, THE ROOKIE, THE IRRATIONAL, and More
January 15, 2025 by Marisa Roffman
Let’s talk about Tuesday night’s TV!
ST. DENIS MEDICAL: I loved this episode and thought the prisoners were perfectly ridiculous. (I’m also hoping they can come back in the newly-ordered season 2.) This was the episode where it felt like things started to really, really click into place for me in the screener batch we initially got (though a gaggle of episodes have aired that weren’t included in that/were also strong), so I’m really excited to see what’s next.
KITCHEN NIGHTMARES: Absolutely insane the owner lied about being able to handle working in the kitchen. I can squint and understand her other lies, but you can’t just magically handle making restaurant-quality food!
That being said, she maybe learned her lesson? The more present-day check-in implied things were going well. The thing about this being pre-Super Bowl is that I’m very curious how they handle that rush. We really need a special after that.
NIGHT COURT: It was very meta to have Mayim Bialik play herself and I wondered how they’d handle it opposite Melissa Rauch given their BIG BANG history. Mayim being a method actress who was getting into the role of a stalker…was sure something. (I’ll also acknowledge as someone who has never seen BLOSSOM, I’d guess most of the nostalgia element of that—the dance, the hats, etc.—didn’t work as much for me.)
DOC: I’m sure she’ll be practicing medicine basically every episode, but she’s also lost a lot of time in the medical world—things would have progressed as technology evolved and studies were released, etc. I get the end argument that you kind of can’t fire her due to her injury, but if she’s also having to relearn everything she missed in that world, too, how much might that potentially eat up valuable treatment time?
DEAL OR NO DEAL ISLAND: If only they hadn’t hyped up Dr. Will being on this show for weeks…maybe it would have felt like a surprise? (I do remain baffled by how many CBS stars are on an NBC show.)
Sydnee freaking out was really sad, though. She would have been safe if she had been able to keep things under control, but…
THE ROOKIE: Loved, loved, loved this episode. I love Plain Clothes Day, in general, but loved seeing Celina get her turn. (And her adorable dance when she passed.)
I know there’s angst everywhere, but it’s mostly working for me. As lovely as James and Nyla are—and I don’t want them to break up—there has always fundamentally been an issue with their differing POV about law enforcement. And obviously they both want good cops, but it’s a really, really difficult thing to overcome and something that will fundamentally never go away. As much as their troubles hurt, I love how Angela unapologetically has her back. (Sorry to Wesley, who is not allowed to defend James in House Wopez.)
And, yeah, Chenford still aren’t back together, but this feels fun. The banter, the bet—while also being willing to throw down for each other; you learned that lesson the hard way, Seth—makes this time before their (I assume) reunion light.
(Worried about Seth and Miles for very different reasons, though.)
THE IRRATIONAL: Wow, Rose is good and found information on Marisa’s kid fast. As much as I’m curious about who this man is, I loved that Marisa respected his space and agency and opened the door (by putting her information out there in case he ever wanted to find her) versus making the choice for her son and contacting him directly. I’m also really glad they picked up this storyline immediately and Marisa told Alec about telling Rose.
