BONES: Carla Kettner Talks Writing ‘The Doctor in the Photo,’ Brennan, Booth and Micah

December 10, 2010 by

BONES fans, how intense was “The Doctor in the Photo”?

The best episode of the season thus far, right?

Emily Deschanel’s amazing performance as Brennan spiraling out of control coupled with Carla Kettner’s fantastic script and Ian Toynton’s unique direction made for one heck of an unforgettable hour.

In fact, I was so impressed by the episode, I sought Kettner out to chat about how the Brennan-centric hour came to be, whether Micah was real, the very important car scene in which Brennan revealed her big regret and much more…

Congratulations on an episode very well done. How did you get tasked with the job of writing it?
Carla Kettner:
Well, it started when [BONES creator] Hart [Hanson] had all of the writers over at his house for lunch at the very beginning of the season. And it was this wonderful relaxing lunch, and he was talking about his hopes for season 6, and one of the things he said was that he wanted to take some chances, which we were all super excited about because the tricky thing about a series once it reaches the mature point of [year] 5, 6, 7, is keeping it fresh — both for us as writers and the audience. So we left that lunch and just kind of let the notion brew, and then one morning, I woke up and had the super clear image in my head of a tree falling over at night and revealing a skeleton. I don’t know if it was a dream or if I just woke up with that image. And a line of dialogue accompanied that image, and that line of dialogue was Brennan saying, “I’ve made a terrible mistake.” And I went to Hart that morning and went, “Look, I’m going to pitch you something crazy. I want a tree to fall over and for our guys to find a woman’s skeleton and I want Brennan to look at that skeleton and basically describe herself. And I want her to feel through the episode that she’s looking in a mirror. And I want to push her to the precipice and push her to the point where at the end of the episode, she says to Booth, ‘I’ve made a terrible mistake.'” And Hart was really excited by the notion and we were really excited that he was serious when he said he wanted to take some chances. And that’s how it came to pass.

Do you wake up regularly with these types of clear, decomposed bodies in your mind for inspiration?
CK:
[Laughs] Well, you know, sometimes, yeah. Sometimes, absolutely. I remember last year thinking, “I really want Santa’s head to explode.” [Laughs] But I think there was a certain — in this instance — it wasn’t so much the gruesomeness of the image, as the emotional impact on Brennan. We all love her, we all care about her like we care about a sister or a friend. And to me, it was my wanting a character I cared about to get back in touch with her heart.

It’s certainly a look at Brennan we’ve never gotten before. The tone and the entire feel of the episode was unlike anything we’ve ever seen on the series. Did that make the writing process more difficult?
CK:
No. I wouldn’t say difficult, I’d say challenging. Usually, I get in the BONES part of my brain when I’m writing an episode. In this case, I got in the Brennan part of my brain, because I wanted it to be entirely from her point of view. And in fact, at the very, very, very beginning of the script, we put a note to production that this episode is weird. And instead of seeing the world through the omniscient view, we’re seeing the world through Brennan’s eyes. So approaching it from that point of view made it possible.

Was there anything you learned about Brennan that you perhaps weren’t anticipating when you first began writing the hour?
CK:
I guess there were things that I felt about Brennan that I wanted the audience to [feel]. I wanted to open some doors into her character — doors that we wouldn’t ordinarily open. That was the reasoning behind the night watchman character, Micah. You know, I think we understand people and characters through their relationships with others. We used Micah to broaden our insight into Brennan because it’s a relationship you wouldn’t have expected her to have! She’s usually quite…intolerant of people. [Laughs] And here’s a guy, a humble night watchman — even though he’s super smart — and [he brings out] a different side of her. I think all of us — the fans, the writers and certainly Hart — we all know that Brennan has an incredible depth of emotion. It was just finding the opportunity to show that in a way that would be consistent with everything we know about her.

Fans are going to ask if Micah was real or not. I thought by the end of the episode that he was real, but did you intend to leave it vague?
CK:
Yeah. There is an internal debate about whether Micah is real or not. I know how I feel about it, but others disagree. So… [Laughs]

Can you say which way you leaned?
CK:
We’ll leave that up to your imagination!

I want Micah to be real, if only because that means you can bring him back.
CK:
Yeah! Enrico [Colantoni (Micah)] is fantastic. I’ve loved him ever since VERONICA MARS. He was fantastic.

Was it difficult to balance the supporting cast in this episode, given how Brennan-centric it was?
CK:
Well, in terms of the supporting cast, I think each of the characters was chosen because the whole notion is we’re meant to get the sense that feeling love is painful, but not feeling it is worse. That’s why we had Mike Dworsky, the dad of the sick boy, and Chris Markham, the helicopter pilot whose love for Lauren never came to be. They all played a part in Brennan’s emotional journey. It was different because we didn’t have our usual suspects in the sense of people with motives and means and opportunity — the [supporting cast] played important roles in the emotion of the episode. And yeah, we spent less screen time with our regular cast members because it’s all about Brennan and everybody is a reflection of her emotional journey.

And that led us to the car scene, which was the culmination of Brennan’s journey — not only in the episode, but one could argue of the season and perhaps the series overall. Was there a reason why you felt that conversation should take place in the car?
CK:
Well, to be honest, that was also much discussed and it came to be more a production choice. In my perfect world, the scene would have taken place right there on the rainy, dirty street. But it became a little bit of a production issue and it actually turned out that I was quite happy it took place in the car because there is a certain sense of you can’t escape, because it’s in the confines of a small space. So I almost feel like — well, huge kudos to Ian Toynton for how he directed that scene. I think, in the end, it worked out better that it was in the car because they can’t get away from each other.

Literally and figuratively.
CK:
Exactly! I guess that’s one of the examples of production limitations actually adding to the impact of a scene.

I know you’re the writer on record for this episode, but I assume it wasn’t solely your choice to have Booth turn her down, correct?
CK:
Well, no, I wouldn’t say that. I think the Booth and Brennan love story that we all want to see play out, I don’t think we want there to be any sudden moves in that. I think their journey is about the rocky road to a happy ending, if you know what I mean. To me, I feel like if you have a friend or a loved one, you absolutely positively know what the best choice for them is, but they’re like too lost in their own issues to see it? We all know that’s the most frustrating thing on the planet, but I think the same way for Booth and Brennan, because we’ve all come to know them so well, they’re like family members. It’s like, “Hello? Guys, wake up! You belong together!” But if that came to pass in a sudden way, it wouldn’t be organic, it wouldn’t be right. At this point, in the world of the show, they’re real people and it’s hard and it’s a struggle to get to your true love in life and in BONES. I don’t think anybody believed that it would be as easy as Brennan declaring herself and Booth accepting, because it shouldn’t be. It wouldn’t be honest. To me, I get that people want it to happen and to me, that’s kind of a testament to the humanity of the show — that people care so much. It’s like caring about a friend or a family member. We just hope they get there eventually, you know? [Laughs]

Not to mention that Booth has a girlfriend. I know some fans will probably be annoyed he turned Brennan down, but the Booth that we’ve come to know and love over the past five seasons wouldn’t just say, “Bye, Hannah, it was nice knowing you!” He is an honorable man.
CK:
Yes!  That is actually what people have to [realize]. You hit it on the head. People have to remember that he’s a man of honor and a man of honor doesn’t do that. He’s the best side of the best kind of man. And it would be wrong for him to just throw off a woman that he was in a committed relationship with.

Right, he is living with her. There is a level of commitment there.
CK:
Exactly.

How careful were you with the words that were used between them in that scene? Booth never explicitly said “I love you” to Brennan in the 100th episode and Brennan didn’t use those words in this scene — is that something that is being saved for the right time?
CK:
[Pauses] You know, I think that in life, again, you have to choose your words carefully. And we all know how much those words mean. We debated the language in the scene and it was adjusted a bunch of times to try and get it to the truest possible point. And if it feels a little bit frustrating, that’s because it’s meant to.

I actually thought it was a great testament to their relationship because there have been parts of this season where it has seemed like Booth was really disconnected from Brennan, but in that scene, he knew exactly what she meant.
CK:
Yes! I’m so glad!

It was really, really well done.
CK:
I think everybody really came together in a remarkable way on this episode. There was little stuff. Whit Vogel, our art department coordinator, I walked into one of the early meetings and she had actually made a model of the tree, because the art department was so committed to getting it right. And here in the middle of the table is an incredible box with a miniature tree growing out of it. And she pulled a cable and the top of the box lifted off to reveal the tree’s root ball and the skeleton entangled in it. The amount of work that girl put in… Everybody was just totally on their A-game. There’s a scene early on in the episode when Brennan’s first leaving the hospital, when she’s first looked at Dr. Lauren’s photo and seen herself, she gets into the elevator and there’s that incredible shot of her descending. For sure, I did not script that scene. Ian, who I think is an absolutely brilliant director, I said to him, “In that one image, you captured a visual of her entire emotional journey in the episode.” Now I can’t imagine the episode without that scene. We see her and it’s like we see her descending into this interior world that she normally completely avoids and Ian just — I think it’s one of the most beautiful images we’ve ever had on the show. It visually defines the entire journey of the episode for me.

For sure. And Emily. I don’t think we can say enough about how amazing Emily was in this episode.
CK:
Beyond amazing. We all know she’s one of the most amazing actresses on television, today and maybe ever. But in this episode, she just went past that. There’s such truth and beauty to her performance, I hope that it gets acknowledged far and wide.

I completely agree. There’s no way you can watch this episode and not feel for this woman and be amazed by the range she shows.
CK:
And the rawness. Usually you don’t get that in a television performance. There’s usually a certain kind of slick quality to network television performances and Emily, she blew me away. She completely blew me away. And we’re just incredibly honored to work with her. I knew she was that good. And I hope she gets the acknowledgment she deserves.

Her tears in the car scene, that was such a shock to see.
CK:
Didn’t that just break your heart?

Absolutely. And I was a little bit disappointed that Fox used that in the promo for the episode, because it was such a shocking moment for the character. Do you wish it had been held back?
CK:
If it gets more people to watch because they see something big is going to happen for the character, I’m okay with it. I think that it’s still a surprise when you get to the actual [moment]. Even though I know it’s coming when I watch the episode, it’s still a surprise to me because the performance is so amazing. We don’t really have any input [regarding] what goes into the promos, so I have to sort of hope that the promo department [gets it right] — it’s their job, so they must to know more than I do! I don’t think [the promos] will ruin it for anyone.

Now that you’ve seen the episode, is there anything you wish you could have done differently or is there anything you wish you could add?
CK:
No. I mean, there were some things that were changed or trimmed because of time considerations or because of other considerations, but in the end, it’s exactly what I hoped it would be that morning when I woke up with the image of the woman in the tree and Emily saying, “I made a terrible mistake.” It’s the episode I hoped it would be. And that’s all any of us can ask for!

That’s good to hear. Just to clarify, is this supposed to take place before or after “The Twisted Bones in the Melted Truck”? I know this was the 8th episode shot [it was the 9th episode aired] and it almost felt like “TTBitMT” had some scenes which could have been explained as lingering implications from this hour.
CK:
You know, it’s funny, a couple of people have asked that and the truth is we always intended it to air after that episode. Again, it was production concerns and for production reasons why they were originally shot in a different order. But it was always meant to be the last episode we aired before Christmas, before we went into reruns because we wanted to leave people thinking about change before they go off for the holidays. [Laughs]

And now you all have to deal with a little bit of a change because you’re going to be on after AMERICAN IDOL. Does that alter anything for you, or is everything still the same as usual in the writers room?
CK:
It’s the same as usual. I guess there’s a little bit more biting of finger nails and a little bit more anxiety. [Laughs] Other than that, we’re just making the BONES show we love to make. I hope to heck a whole bunch of people, who for whatever reason haven’t seen the show, will leave their TV set on Fox and discover us because that would be fantastic, but I don’t know. We’ll see what happens!

Are you doing any more scripts this year?
CK:
I may do another one a little later in the season, if time allows. We’ll see. No final decision on that. I have my plate full at the moment. I hope so. It’s a super fun show to write. We have some fantastic stuff planned for later in the season. Whoever is writing it, it’s going to be great!

Great interview! I have a question, though, is she writing other parts of other episodes meanwhile? Or is she a writer in another show? She said she may be writing another episode later this season and she has her plate full at the moment… How exactly does that work? Just curious on the inner workings of the writers room, I guess. 🙂

I loved the Bren,Michah scenes but the overall theme for me as a woman was a major turn off. Brennan, world reknown anthropologist, best selling author, is pretty much a pathetic woman because she doesn’t have a man in her life. This season has been about Brennan paying for saying no to the Great Seeley Booth, and last nite Seeley got his shot at returning the rejection.
Now that Bren has paid enough, been stumped on enough can we move on and let her find happiness?

  3. Taylor on December 10th, 2010 4:07 pm

well, i loved this episode.. it defiantly means there getting together sooner or later. hopefully.. its defiantly opened a lot of doors for them!

  4. Tiffany on December 10th, 2010 4:15 pm

While this episode was beautiful and well-written and well-acted, it doesn’t change my opinion on this season or give me hope that the writers have finally found their way. The most glaring problem for me, is that this season has the viewers screaming for a return to seasons prior (any other season in fact). Hart wanted to shake things up, but it seems to me that the fans were pretty happy with the way things were, for the most part. I don’t see the point of going through all of this angst and drama, when the goal (at the moment at least) is to get back to where we were. It seems to me that the risks that the writers took did not pay off and they should learn from their mistakes.

Hey, organic? honest? Those died a long time ago. Bye, bye Bones.

  6. sfsd on December 10th, 2010 4:48 pm

@ El, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

  7. Mandy on December 10th, 2010 5:10 pm

Marisa, in your next interview with Hart or Stephen will you ask if they are going to bring on a SO other for Brennan this season? SN had said early in the season that it was a possibility, will it become a reality.
I’m over B&B, am enjoying Bannah and would like to see a happy Brennan this season.
Why they think viewers will enjoy the lead character suffering the entire season is beyond my brain grasp?

  8. Eve on December 10th, 2010 5:39 pm

I agree with Mandy. She has suffered long enough. Let Brennan move on and find someone who will love her completely. They have now put it out there that hannah is not the consolation prize. Don’t go through all this so that Brennan becomes the consolation prize. Let her find happiness and let them go back to their friendship. This has been dragged out since the 100th. Get the fun back in Bones. The payback for Brennan’s rejections to Booth is enough. Let’s move one.

  9. brisker1 on December 10th, 2010 5:48 pm

*sigh* b&b, the ever frustrating debate.
i would have absolutely loved to see them get together in the past.. i mean cmon, we all know they belong together! but that storyline is getting overworked and strained, hence the introduction of hannah — who isn’t some sideshow piece. i mean she’s gorgeous, intelligent, and fits right into what booth wants. she even gets along with parker! as a viewer and an avid bones fan from the start, half of me wants to hate hannah for coming in and filling that void, the void that booth so badly wanted bones to fill before. but the other half of me sees her as a character that’s slowly growing on me, that helps shake up the dynamic of the show and especially the dynamic of b&b.
at some point, if they want to keep their fans happy, they’re going to have to get them together.. i don’t think it’s avoidable, given all the history — and especially after bones’ massive realization and confession in The Doctor in the Photo.
how they plan on doing it.. only time will tell. cross our fingers that it isn’t too far away.

  10. Jessica on December 10th, 2010 6:12 pm

The show is ruined. The heart of this show has always been the chemistry of the Booth/Bones relationship…they’ve completely ruined that. Now its just another crime/csi type show amongst how many others. Used to be my favorite show and now I can hardly stand to watch. I don’t want honest and real, I have that every day of my life…I want the Booth/Bones we used to know and love. It just breaks my heart how much you all have ruined this show.

  11. Truth and Reconcilliation on December 10th, 2010 6:44 pm

    @ Jessica.

Then stop watching (unless you have a Neilson.)

  12. A on December 10th, 2010 7:50 pm

I just feel like B and B are two strangers and I want their friendship and chemistry back. I miss them. I don’t really like Hannah and don’t feel like she adds much tot he show. I am ready for that story line to be over and for something new to take place.

  13. Cathy on December 10th, 2010 8:58 pm

I wish they would put Booth and Bones together. That blonde bimbo needs to take a hike. I love the chemistry between Booth and Bones. Pleast put them together.

  14. patty on December 10th, 2010 9:07 pm

didnt you see this last ep. she offered herself to him and he refused, cuz of the bimbo!! she cried !!! i felt so bad for her, know how she felt , been there done that !!!
    🙁

  15. BeeeCeeee on December 10th, 2010 9:12 pm

So I loved this interview. I also loved the episode. It showed great character development in Brennan. Proof that yes, she can feel emotions and is not a robot. Though, yes, she has shown emotion in the past, this is the first time that you can truly see it. I don’t think it makes her a week person, I feel like it makes her more human, less anthropologist-robot. The Booth & Brennan complex, hmmmm, I have a love hate relationship with the possibility of them getting together. I personally believe that will never will, but that’s just me. I love how with each season characters are growing and changing, and it continues to be my favorite show.

  16. Alicia on December 10th, 2010 9:15 pm

I feel that this was definitely the best episode of the season so far atleast, but I found one major flaw in – Booths reaction when she told him… his “I have a girlfriend speech” was understandable of course, but the way he asks ” Is there someone I can call for you ? ” I am sorry but in the situation, given the past, given the feelings that never completely go away , given their partnership and more importantly their friendship he would not have reacted that way. He would have comforted her, either put his arm around her and let her cry, held her hand, tried to comfort her in some other fashion – Trust me, I know… I’ve been in the same unrequited, missed chance situation with my bestfriend for almost 7 years now and even if he hurt me, he’d stay and comfort me not as “is there someone I can call for you”

In my honest opinion, the writers have really let Booths character go down hill this season.

  17. Ashley on December 10th, 2010 9:17 pm

i just loved this episode, i didn’t take to kindly to the part where booth turned brennan down, but i think having this part shown will make the episodes to come more interesting, And why i say interesting is because Brennan has let out her true feelings for Booth and i just can’t wait to see how they react around eachother after this bomb has been dropped maybe Booth will regain his once feelings for Brennan or maybe not but thats what makes this show so addicting is because you are always curious of whats going to happen next so i CANNOT wait for the next episode cause i am a major BONES fan i have everyone of the seasons on DVD lol 😀

  18. M on December 10th, 2010 9:20 pm

Carla Kettner is listed as the writer for almost all of my most favourite Bones episodes. What a wonderful script, episode and interview!

  19. Maryanne Pihowich on December 10th, 2010 9:21 pm

Ah, but the seed has been planted.

  20. Caroline on December 10th, 2010 9:33 pm

Hannah would work as a character on many other programs. On Bones, however, we are so used to the vivid, at least somewhat eccentrics that to many of us she pales in comparison. Her involvement in Brennan’s work renders her even more of a peripheral role, since her work is background noise. I’m willing to wait out this relationship, as long as there are interesting plots to keep me happy. I liked the tree roots, but the ring was just a little heavy handed (sorry.)
Veronica Mars? Try Just Shoot Me and Galaxy Quest for Micah’s earlier credentials

  21. Kim on December 10th, 2010 9:33 pm

And yet, Booth was there to save her, again. Don’t let the carnal relationship between Hannah and Booth and living together (why buy the cow when you get the milk for free?) fool you. Did Hannah not make the comment that she hated to see them fight? B&B argued like they are married. Hannah is new. Brennan is the constant. I know, in my heart, that Booth still loves Brennan. Hannah may not be a consulation prize and he may “love” her, but who followed Brennan out into a cold, rainy night to rescue her? Booth. I sobbed my eyes out when Booth turned Brennan down. It was very painful to watch and see her admit that “she missed her chance”. Down the line…somewhere in the future…Hannah will back out because she can see what we all know is true. Brennan had to grow and move forward and now she can be with Booth. Be patient, Bones fans, true love will win out. (but you do know that will be the end of the show, right??) And I could be wrong, but I’m betting I’m not.

  22. ShyGirl64 on December 10th, 2010 9:34 pm

Since the blond bimbo came on the show I don’t care for the new shows. It seems like Hannah has made less time for Brennan and Booth to be with each other. I love it when they work with each other. Booth is moving to fast with Hannah so we know that it would not work out. I think he just wanted to make Brennan pay for turning him down. Now that he knows her feelings for him he will not be able to be with Bimbo without thinking about Brennan. Or Bimbo would not be able to take Booth and Brennan “friendship” for long.

  23. LFZ on December 10th, 2010 9:41 pm

That line “is there someone I can call for you” struck me as very out of character too.

  24. Maer on December 10th, 2010 9:56 pm

    @brisker1
Well said. I think we should just watch the story lines as they unfold. These people realise they are sticking a wrench in things, but ti’s all part of the process. What will the fun be in writing Bones and Booth as, say being married? They can do it, but part of the fun of Brennan and Booth IS the sexual tension and the little looks when they think the other isn’t looking.
I’m going to sit back and watch it all play out.

  25. Cordy on December 10th, 2010 9:57 pm

And what is with this “this is my associate Dr Brennan” nonsense?? Booth has changed so very much this season. I understand that now that Hannah is in the picture that she is his focus. That I get. There is just so much distance with B and B. He kinda left her at the diner, how he introduced her in this ep. ( he always says Bones is his partner), he’s never at the lab anymore. Its like he has replaced all of them. Bones, Cam, Hodgens. I would like to belive that the reason for the Boothy distance is that he doesn’t want any of the hard questions to come up with Hannah. Like the B and B past. We know that Hannah can’t know much about that.

  26. Truth and Reconcilliation on December 10th, 2010 10:01 pm

^ Actually, he has referred to Brennan as his “associate” before. Anyway, what’s the difference between associate and partner?

  27. Joy on December 10th, 2010 10:08 pm

EL and Mandy sum it up for me. I suppose for a new writer to the series, this could seem organic…especially if they aren’t familiar with the five seasons prior and only know from say the 100th on. I went with the first reset (brain tumor) because, hey, random acts of God happen. The reset done in the 100th was so blatantly a plot shift and not a character choice, it was shocking. Organic: I don’t believe in love…love is just hormonal…I wish I believed in love…I believe in love…I love you. Then we’d get to move into a new phase of the story, and the writers would have new things to write about because of new dynamics. Instead we get to the end of the 100th where Booth can’t even say the words “I love you.” He hedges his bets. Brennan’s belief in love – because of Booth, mind you – is also forgotten. Booth talks to her like they’ve just met and he knows nothing about her. Like, really, this is the way you’re going to approach Bones with this? Then when she freaks out, you are going to AGREE with her and give up? Yeah…that’s the Booth we know and love – NOT. Certainly the scene itself was well-written and well-done, but in the context of the series it had very little connection to what had transpired over the 99 episodes before.

So now we’ve got Brennan being portrayed as pathetic and falling apart because she said “no” to giving a relationship with Booth “a shot.” The Brennan insight is great, and Emily was amazing doing it, but certainly this wouldn’t be the only way to get that insight to the character. Meanwhile Booth is “in love” with a “woman” who talks and acts like a teen boy’s ultimate fantasy girl – beautiful, always wants sex, dresses like a call girl, is “smart” – but luckily you can’t tell by anything she says. Oh, and thinks you can be a woman or a mother, but not both.

The episode was well-written for what was being dealt with, and used many interesting metaphors and layers. Again, nicely done, just not so great when I think about the series as a whole. This entire storyline makes me think someone in the Bones camp must be having a mid-life crisis. Unfortunately, it’s destroyed a really great show.

However, the silver lining seems to be that other network shows are terrified of “pulling a ‘Bones’ ” and are actually allowing the characters’ relationship to develop organically and not use ‘heroic’ means to keep them apart. These horrible story choices in Bones may have replaced the fear of the “Moonlighting curse” with fear of “Pulling a Bones.” Network television will be better because of it. (Cable figured this stuff out a while ago.)

  28. Cordy on December 10th, 2010 10:14 pm

It make them sound more distant from each other. Associate as in this is someone I work with from time to time. He hasn’t included her as much this season as usual. That is all. My opinion.

I thought it was horrible and totally out of character for Booth to ask Brennan “Is there someone I can call for you,” like atleast say can I call Angela. Like he doesn’t know her well enough for that load of bull line. But the more I think about it, the more I think he was truly thrown by her

“To me, I get that people want it to happen and to me, that’s kind of a testament to the humanity of the show — that people care so much. ”

People care so much… (Snort) This is past tense to a lot of fans. It took too long to get to this point and there are now a lot of fans who simply DON”T care anymore.

Testament to the humanity of the show… again, past tense. Booth was a little more like himself in this episode, but there have been 8 episodes in this season already where he was a jerk. So, there isn’t much humanity left.

That’s great that the writers want to keep the show fresh, but they went about it in a very dangerous way and they lost a lot of fans in the process. It may have worked if this episode had been 4 or 5 weeks ago.

So long, Bones. I’d like to say it was nice knowin’ ya, but now I just wish I had never watched the show at all. I’ve never been this upset about the direction of a show I loved.

So I’m trying this again, due to my temperamental iPhone:
I thought it was horrible and totally out of character for Booth to ask Brennan “Is there someone I can call for you,” like atleast say can I call Angela. Like he doesn’t know her well enough for that load of bull line. But the more I think about it, the more I think he was truly thrown by her admissIon and didn’t really know how to respond. And if he were to console her, he would hold her and quite possibly tell her he does love her. And being the noble good guy he is he’d feel too guilty about Hannah. I’m guessing he’ll be feeling a little trapped and responsible since Hannah came to the States for him. He can’t just say “I love you, Temperance,” then head back to his apartment and tell Hannah “Hey, Bones finally admitted she’s in love with me, as I am with her, so get your stuff and get out so we can be together!”
That is the only thing that keeps me from being upset about his reaction to Brennan and her telling him how she feels. And as for the person that said it’s pathetic that Brennan couldn’t just be happy alone, she needs a man, well she’s shown she hasn’t needed one, but she did realize that she loves Booth. That makes her human, as so many other people that are in love.

  35. Susan Watts on December 10th, 2010 10:49 pm

I watched Bones last night and it really upset me when she said that she had regrets and had made a mistake. I agree that Hannah should leave Booth and go back ot Afghanistan or someplace. Maybe this would straighten out the problem between them now that she has told Booth how she feels. I doubt if they can be just friends now. That would never work. I couldn’t work with someone I was in love with and had to be around every day and he had someone else in his life. it would kill me.

  36. JC on December 10th, 2010 10:49 pm

The ratings have been falling. People who don’t want the show to end can come up with all the excuses they want. The root of the problem is HH and the writers. Fans have been dropping off radar. There are people who decided to watch the Dec. 9 episode and then quit without even knowing the ending because of the spoilers for February. I will be shocked, seriously shocked, if the ratings don’t continue to fall in January.

I realize there are people hoping that American Idol will draw fans in to make up for all the fans they have lost this season, but that’s a pipe dream. If this was the case a couple of seasons ago, it would have worked. It used to be a balanced show full of humor and chemistry. Now it’s just a mediocre show at best. If people tune in for the first time, they might just ask themselves, “What was supposed to be so great about this show?” It’s so very sad that the writers have screwed up the show so severely.

I dislike the show more and more with each new episode this season. I hate Booth’s character more and more with every new episode. And Hannah… I think I could scream. She is so shallow and boring. She has ruined Booth. And the actress… David didn’t have the final choice but he said he had the most chemistry with her. Snort. I guess it was his other head doing the talking because her acting skills are nothing to brag about.

Even after the 100th episode, I liked the S5 episodes (except for the finale). The Rocker in the Rinse Cycle was so hilarious that I didn’t even care that Booth was seeing Catherine and Brennan was seeing Hacker. Of course, we didn’t have to see them and especially not in bed.

The season 6 version doesn’t even look like the show I used to know. It might as well be a spin-off called Booth and Hannah. It could be a non-humorous show about a FBI agent and his reporter girlfriend.

The center didn’t hold. It shifted. It’s now Booth and Hannah. Gag!

Wow, I have been watching this show for years and I NEVER EVER seen her cry. She has always shown poise and control in every episode with almost robotic accuracy. This is one if not the best episodes yet, because it made her face her own morality and existence. It made me think about things in my own life as well. I think she realized that she was fooling herself all this time into believing that she didn’t have the same human emotions that tend to limit others or place them into vulnerable situations. But the ending, when she was in the car she actually expressed herself in a way that she never had before. It seems like she knew that she pushed Brennen into the arms of another woman and that may be why it hurt so much. Sometimes, we all avoid feelings in one way or another for whatever reason, but then something happens in our lives that make us aware that we have neglected the very thing that we needed. I love Emily she is totally outstanding and her performance bring this character to life… Bravo – keep up the excellent work -RS

what is wrong with you all?! I don’t understand for one second how you can think that this episode, or this season is bad. I’m really bothered by the fact that you think Brennan was being weak just because she felt lonely and wants to be with Booth. She is an incredibly strong woman. It is what originally drew me to the show. There are not enough strong, intelligent women on television. You would strip her of all of that just because she wants someone to love and to have them love her back? I am completely confused by that. It seems like you don’t understand the character at all. This is the only procedural show I will watch because of the real heart and respect it gives to all the characters and their relationships with one another.

  39. Edmund F. Spencer on December 10th, 2010 11:03 pm

I can see there was a great deal of thought went into your writing of this series, however your characters lack emotions, to well scripted with their perfect makeup and every conversation feeling like it been rehearsed dozens of times. The sets are to lavish for low profile investigations.
I like the show because it is different then the other cop shows, they seem to pop up like crab grass. The only cop show I watch is “The Good Guys” a comedy. There is enough serious things happening upon this earth and a little humor is a refreshing change. Make Bones a little stupid and more fun. Could one imagine going on a date with her and she begins to explain in great detail how ones digestion of food passes through ones body with her monochromatic voice, waiter I want my bill, you can have this fruitcake.

  40. rich on December 10th, 2010 11:07 pm

I think that the whole tension between bones and booth is playing out. It is almost unrealistic for 2 people to be that close and not have a deep love and concern for one another. Bones is highly intelligent but she is emotionally afraid to express or to give herself. I’m sure that she is a sexual person and can have sex for the sake of “having a good time” but she is emotionally bankrupt and many people that are like that do not get involved with anything emotionally. booth can sense that and has thrown hints for a long time but never got any type of response from her. So I think in a way he just gave up. then came hannah, a woman that is just as attractive that was willing to give booth what a man needs, love, companionship and physical support. So this is a message to all the ladies out there. If there is a man that is interested in you, he is not going to wait forever for you to make up your mind if you want him or not, hew is just going to move on and someone will love him. Someone/ something is better than nothing at all…..

I definately felt this was one of the best episodes. It was so good to see Tempe “feel” something so deeply and develop more real character qualities. i don’t think it was bones being “weak”, not at all. i think it was more her being upset and confused by what she feels, what she’s felt all along and is now starting to understand. they’ve really moved booth away from bones in this season, which i find to be an annoyance. has anyone else noticed that he often seems slightly hostile towards her, or fed up? like in the doctor in the photo when she picks up the big flashlight and says that it was possibly a weapon, and booth turns around and scolds her, almost like a child? maybe that’s just me but i don’t find his character as goofy and loving this season with her. i think that might be because they’re trying to show his focus on hannah, but i’m not sure. on the topic of hannah and booth, i think we’re going to see tension and a split. now that booth knows bones feels the same, and is finally ready to admit it, the seed has been planted. he’s either going to become distant with hannah, or he’s going to move at rocket speed trying to compensate for what he’s always felt for bones. i also think that if they keep hannah and booth together, the subject of children is gonna cause a problem. at the start of this episode, she made a comment about “how she could never imagine giving up being a woman to become a mother”. booth is big on family.. her being wishy washy about having kids won’t sit well, if they get to that stage.
*shakes head* they need to get the story back on track, or this show might end up crashing and burning.

Excellent episode. Definitely a whole different atmosphere. Even the lighting was unique. Shots from above the lab were great. A lot of top down angles, minimizing Bones and changing our perspective on her. The picture not looking like her at the end was predictable.

Even the smartest people can break down emotionally.

And as a man I have to agree with Rich, if getting married after 30 is more uncommon than winning the lottery, then women need to become more open. I loved how he said “Hanna is not a consolation prize.” I am going to have to get me a belt buckle that says “Cocky.”

Don’t the writers watch the earlier episodes to at least know the plot lines !! I don’t mind the Hannah plot development although the longer the relationship goes on the less likely that there is any credible way to bring B and B back together. But what I really hate is when the writers don’t know the history of the players and have the characters say or do things that are so out of their character and personal history . Like why isn’t Brennan writing or teaching and where is her father? Why is Angela so distant? Why doesn’t Cam have anything to say about Seeley’s choices? Its like Season 6 came out of the blue. And what about that trip to the Maluka islands? Doesn’t it have any professional meaning for Brennan? Booth asks if there is anyone to be called? Come on . That is not his character. What I also hated about Booth was when he implied that it was a burden for him to have to watch out for Brennan and rescue her once again. I’d like her to call him on that. Ok she broke his heart but Brennan in earlier seasons would not have stood for that.
Come on writers watch the reruns and figure out a way to advance the plot but keep the characters consistent to their history.

  50. Rose Berry on December 11th, 2010 12:24 am

I love the show, but, really….a logical, intelligent character like Brennan having hallucinations while awake and sitting there crying over Booth so she can be rejected. Really…….what drugs was the writer on, this in no way reminded me of the show that I love. I think Brennan has always known how she felt about Booth but stayed professional like the logical and intelligent professional that you’ve portrayed up to now. Also, Hannah may be pretty but the whole situation seems pretty shallow. He’s in a war zone, she’s supposed to be atough war correspondent and they wind up in bed to remind themselves that they didn’t die that day. Then she gets all girly and follows him home, dropping the job that she supposedly lives for to take a lame job where he runs around protecting her from things she should be able to handle herself. This does not a mature relationship make. This reminded me of the mystery show years ago (Twin Peaks) that started off great and then diverged into some crazy convoluted plots, never to be heard of again. Hope the same thing doesn’t happen to Bones.

Well, it looks like the ratings have spoken. They dropped once again. Not expecting anything different in January. HH and the writers need to open their eyes and see what damage they’ve done to what used to be a great show.

If they want Booth and Hannah to be the central focus of a show, make a new show just for them. I hate Booth more than I hate Hannah. The new Booth, and how he treats Brennan, makes me want to puke. If he can’t be around her and be considerate of her feelings, then he should just hand over the position to another agent.

Brennan didn’t deserve the brutal rejection. When she rejected him, it was out of love because she thought she was protecting him.

Rich and Cabezon really back my opinion: These SL is majorly insulting to all intelligent woman who don´t think they aren´t complete or worth remembering if they haven´t got any (no matter what kind as long he has sth „cocky“) MAN.

And there are definitively men out there where being alone is a real good option to consider.

As a feminist I find the whole: „Brennan must be punished and suffer bc she turn down THE MAN“-story disgusting and revolting. LOVE like portraited byHH and co must have a devasting effect on the (female) brain.

Regardless of everything else in this episode, I cannot get over how horrible the actress who plays Hannah’s line readings are. It’s horrific. She asked Bones if she was alright and I could hear the line clunk as she delivered it. A bean has more humanity, emotionality and warmth.

  57. rich on December 11th, 2010 8:24 am

I understand what you are trying to say Rose. But in reality, not TV. How long is a man going to WAIT. I mean DANG we all are human beings and we are in need of love and affection as a necessity for emotional and spiritual growth in our lives. That is a TV SHOW, hint, TV SHOW. The reason that people cheat emotionally or physically ( aside from being selfish and or greedy) on the other spectrum if a spouse is holding back communication, sex, love or companionship we gravitate elsewhere. So, how many YEARS do you WAIT for someone to becoming interested in you after you have shown interest in them??? It is a different time frame for everyone, some a week, some 6 months and some can wait a year for a person to respond to advances. But for me in REALITY not a TV SHOW I’m not waiting forever for one person to reciprocate feelings. I mean he SAID I LOVE HER so it is not NOTHING. Sometimes woman tend to wait until you get someone one to say “Ooh by the way I want you” when it’s too late. But often times, I know especially for men when you are alone they don’t say nothing. So if Booth is happy with a woman that wants to BE WITH HIM and not play games more power to him. if is does not work out and he an brennen gets together that’s cool too, but remember, this is TV not REALITY. But as in life, YOU write your own script. But don’t be mislead and the point of the show is that brennen is realizing that life is too short to take for granted the things that really matter in this life, because they will inevitable slip away. Ooh and remember Rose this is TV – Television LOL Lighten up :o)

  58. rich on December 11th, 2010 8:35 am

I think that the character hannah is purposely made to be shallow. If you lok at the way the show is written, each character has depth and substance in the show except her. She is almost like a prompt or a placeholder. the writers can go in different directions with her because they still have the ability to grow the character or they can eliminate or illuminate her. Once of the facts is that she came out of no where, she has no past and no “personality”. She is just there, as in many characters in TV they are leaving the substance open in order to “fit” her into episodes. So there is really not concrete foundation for her character. Based on my experience with TV and the way that characters like that fit into roles it looks like she is setting herself up to be killed by working these dangerous assignments. Remember she is in the business of exposing some very powerful people. And everybody knows that when you play with fire like that the end result is never good It looks like eventually something will happen to her and that emotional impact may drive booth and bennen closer. But the challenge for the writers is once you get brennen and booth together, where do you take the emotional element of the show?

  59. rich on December 11th, 2010 8:51 am

I really love the character brennen, she is controlled, poised, highly intelligent and corky in her own cute way. She is very open minded and close minded at the same time and she plays on her strengths and admits her weaknesses. She brags of her successes and she points out and corrects other peoples shortcomings quickly. She is brutally honest so when she says “you are right” you feel it because she aint gonna just say it. She is extremely vulnerable and fragile emotionally and you can see that in the episodes with her brother and father. But as a loner she runs away from any emotional connection to anything. She uses everything as an object to get to the truth of existence and views her career as a mission in her life to become the very best at what she does. I think she is perfect and Emily does a fantastic job in playing this character. She is wise, focused and totally disciplined. On the other hand she is beautiful, feminine, classy, and sometimes even socially inept to the point of being a major geek. But all of these elements make her unpredictable in what she is going to say or do in any situation. On top of all of that, if you mess with her she will kick you butt without breaking a sweat LOL You go girl !!!!!

It seems some can’t tell the difference between good tv and bad, or the difference between television and reality.
Loved Bones, loved promoting Bones – but no more. The show keeps sliding, and while this episode was “ok”, it wasn’t spectacular.
Hannah needs to go, Daisy needs to go (maybe they can go together, in a car accident?)… and we don’t need romance in every episode. If I want a soap, I’ll watch a soap.
It’s really disappointing that Bones has turned into all the other shows on tv.

The “emotional” part of the story is great but I started watching because of the forensic part of the show. But I think that the shows portrayal of the emotional side of each character is important as well because it shows that we all have these emotional connections to each other like it or not. The characters are set up to be the “best” in their fields but then again you see that even though they are intelligent they are still “people” and they haver the same short comings and limitations as everyone else. It actually shows up that yes we can be “highly functional” in many areas in our lives yet totally limited in others as well. But I think that there has to be some more major shifts in the show in order for it to survive. It is well written, well shot and interesting to watch but it’s missing something that is going to keep it competitive with all of the other choices of TV and movies out there that are just as good and easily accessible. The writers have to be very careful to maintain the integrity of the show and give more depth to the work without being “predictable”

  63. Linda on December 11th, 2010 12:38 pm

I have loved Bones from the first show. Tempy has grown emotionly over the years and has come to care for others, which she didn’t before. I have enjoyed watching her journey, but she did not deserve the treatment she got from the writers on this last show. To be totally rejected by Booth in such a callous way was unacceptable. He didn’t even pull off the road to talk to her, much less to comfort her. Where has my Booth gone? The man who has always gone out of his way to protect Brennen from anything has disappeared. I HATE this new callous, distant person the writers have made of him. This guy deserves the blonde bimbo. The show has lost its anchor, the B&B team. Without it, it will continue to lose faithful fans and just disappear. Even now I can see Sully sailing back into the picture. How else are they going to make Booth realize what he has lost? If they don’t get together soon its goodbye Bones.

  64. Kobster on December 11th, 2010 12:40 pm

Bones is not a fairytale. I wouldn’t watch it if it was. I love the characters too much for the writers to placate me with an unrealistic romance. Good episode and good season.

  65. magdalena on December 11th, 2010 2:35 pm

Horrible episode. Turned it off half way. So some intelligent, famous woman is incomplete without a man? Bullshit. They can care for each other without jumping into bed. Bren is a high functioning Asperger, The whole episode was totally out of character. It is bad enough they have her going out on interviews, to add this type of thing is to wreck the show.

  66. Nadine on December 11th, 2010 3:17 pm

I can’t believe so many of you really wanted Booth to say something like, “ok, I’ll clear Hannah out in the morning so we can be together.” Honestly. Would you want to associate with a man who would act like that? Some of you need to grow up. Like real life — it’s complicated.

  67. Liz on December 11th, 2010 3:27 pm

Have the writers decided how much pain and suffering is enough for Temperance Brennan to pay for turning Booth down? I am beyond sick and tired of Temperance getting suckered punched for not gleefully jumping up and down and accepting Booth one chance at a relationship?
I want the Temperance who knew her worth and wasn’t a girly, girly, needy girl who needed a man to validate her worth and happiness.
Temperance has gone from a woman to admire to a woman to pity.
    Good job Hart Hanson,

  68. Liz on December 11th, 2010 3:30 pm

Nadine, I haven’t read one person say they wanted or expected Booth to break up with Hannah or kick her out. I guess it would be nice if that was the case but the truth is, folks have said they wanted Booth to show some compassion, nothing to do with breaking up with Hannah.
I don’t find Booth all that noble, he proposed in one breathe and in the same breathe promised to move on, which he did with Hannah.

  69. Tiffany on December 11th, 2010 3:57 pm

I agree with Liz, there is no way I could respect Booth if he just dumped Hannah, however pulling the car over so he could look her in the eye was apparently too much to ask. I mean who keeps driving when someone they care about is SOBBING in the seat next to them? At least, when Brennan said no to Booth, you could see it hurt her…she cried for goodness sake! Booth couldn’t be bothered to stop the damn car so he could focus on her, and they say Brennan is the emotionally stunted one of the too!

  70. Jen on December 11th, 2010 4:02 pm

The ratings have dropped significantly. I’m not surprised. And if they had gotten B&B together, it probably wouldn’t have ended the series. If the ratings did decline, it would have never been as bad as it is now. Ironic that they were trying to avoid it.

HH is either not intelligent or he’s one of those people who can’t be wrong. He’ll die trying to prove himself right instead of conceding and making things better.

Magdelena – Brennan is definitely not Asperger’s. I have a lot of experience personally and professionally to know the difference and I was one of the professionals and mothers who fought hard to get it recognized. And someone who is Aspergers would never be able to be an anthropologist. Her social skills are environmentally induced. The DMV is very strict on that ruling out any diagnosis along with other learning, mental, and emotional disorders.

Nadine – I haven’t read anywhere that he should immediately drop Hannah and run to Brennan. That would be ludicrous and out of character. However, there are several other ways that he could have showed compassion. A simple “I don’t want to see you hurt,” was not enough. And talking about out of character, Booth immediately declaring he needed to move on when he should have known she would have a knee jerk reaction and say no instead of warming up to the idea was just not Booth. He knows her. Pathetic writing. Something like this would have been better:

“Bones, before we went to see Sweets, I asked if we were going to talk with him about his opinion that we are in love. Why did you say you didn’t care about that?”

“He’s the author, Booth. He’s entitled to his own opinion.” She paused before adding, “Does it bother you?”

    “What? No. It’s just…”

Brennan looked at Booth with concern. “It’s just what?”

“It just got me thinking.” A quick glance told him she was concerned. “It just got me wondering if you could… if you could ever love someone like me.”

“I don’t know what that means.”

“Well, you’re a genius, Bones. And you’re a best-selling author. You’re rich. I’m the opposite of a rich, creative genius.”

“Booth, none of those things matter. You have many great qualities. Any woman would be lucky to be loved by you regardless if they were rich or any of those other things you said.”

    “Maybe,” he said softly.

It was a few moments before Brennan realized that Booth was no longer walking beside her. She turned around to look at him. “Booth?” She looked puzzled in addition to being concerned. “You don’t believe me? Because I’m…”

“I know what you’re going to say, Bones. You’re always right.” He gave her a smirk which she returned.

    “Then, what’s the problem?”

He shrugged. “Sweets reminded me that I’m a gambler.”

“We both know that you’re a reformed gambler. Sweets knows that, too. He should have never said that.”

“Maybe not. Bones, do you think you could ever love me?”

    “You know that partners can’t…”

“That’s not what I asked,” he said softly. “Do you think you could ever love me?”

“We’re partners. You’re my best friend, Booth.”

“I already know those things. What I don’t know is if you could ever love me.”

An uncomfortable silence hung in the air for far longer than Booth was comfortable with.

“Look, I’m sorry. I should have never said that. I’m still hungry. Do you still want to get something to eat?”

(Excerpt of a fanfic story I started last summer.

  72. Jen on December 11th, 2010 4:37 pm

I have to add two more thoughts.

Why Hannah should have never been in the story line:

Brennan’s reaction shouldn’t have been unexpected. He should have known that would be her knee-jerk reaction, that she would have to warm up to the idea, and that he would have to approach her again in the future. His “I need to move on” was out of character. His “You’re right” and agreeing with Brennan that she didn’t have an open heart and couldn’t change was ridiculous since he’s been proving otherwise for the past 5 years. The 100th episode at the Hoover was way out of character for Booth.

Now that she is in the story line, why shouldn’t it work?

HH has said Hannah is the kind of woman that Booth falls for, but what about… It’s crazy to do the same thing over and over again and expect a different outcome.

  73. Bingo on December 11th, 2010 5:21 pm

It was a brilliant performance by Emily bar none. With that said, the interview smacked of wishful thinking, it they think that this whole story arch of Hannah is going over. I hope they think again. The ratings are slumping and what the heck are they doing moving the time slot of a tried and true show in that time slot of 8 pm. I hope they don’t think the Big Bang Theroy is affecting the ratings it’s not. It’s the bad writing, up to this ep and the science dude ep, the rest of been mediocre at best. The cruelty shown by Booth towards Brennan is borderline abusive. His put downs, his cuting in when she’s talking, and now calling her an associate instead of partners is just simply wrong. Brennan should have told Booth to take a hike a long time ago, I know I wouldn’t tolarte this abuse. If Brennan was fighting back and the playful bickering was there, then that’s something else, it’s not. Brennan is taking this abouse that Booth is dishing out, there a syndrome out ther with a name TPTB better look it up.
The ending of an incredible ep was simply bad, period. Booth could have shown a little remorse but noooooooo he simply said “Can I call someone for you” knowing full well there is on one she can call other then himslef, how callous was that. the say payback is you know what, well Brennan has been on the receiving end long enough, Booth’s cruelty should not be tolerated or condones by the FOX network. The ratings bleed has to stop and I’m afraid moving it an hour later against Grey’s Anatomy and CSI is going to kill the series. Nail biting as stated the writers are doing, darn straight they should be biting their nails. Katheryn Winnick perfomance as Hannah is simply bad acting. What was HH thinking in hiring this actress, her deliveries of lines is simply excruating to hear and accept. Her performance is sadly lacking, a better actress might have pulled this off, but alas she isn’t. The whole arc is killing Bones in slow degrees. The magic and chemistry that made up Bones is gone and not only B&B but all the others. What a shame I for one will watch as long as Miss Winnick isn’t in the credits, that’s what probably hurt the ratings listing Winnick in the crdits when she was on only for minutes. For all the hype and internet chatter for the best ep of the season so far and it got the lowest rating to date, as a matter of fact the lowest ratings in years. Get this Hannah arch over with quick or Bones won’t be around long, forget about renewel, the arc is making fans angry and tunning out. HH said he took a gamble with Hannah well he lost, and sorry but Miss Winnick as the actress really couldn’t pull of being best buds with Brennan or for that matter much of a love interest other than with her clothes off and doing it under a fig tree, simply immoral at best.
David is a producer and director and actor, he knows how to deliver a line and is a great performer. This season his out to lunch or is his abuse of Brennan his by choice? David doesn’t like to be in the lab, well suck it up, that had some of the best scenes ever and you were endearing and mucho at the same time in that environment, now your gone and so is the magic. Shame and bad on you David.

  74. Binnie on December 11th, 2010 7:00 pm

Joy, I agree 100% with your take on the show and the characters, especially your take on Hannah being a teenage boy’s fantasy. I’ve become more and more disillusioned with the changes in Booth’s character. His comment about “can I call someone for you” just rang so false. That’s the kind of thing someone who doesnt know or care about the person would say.The whole tenor of the show has changed. You see so little of the other characters. They’ve become nearly invisible.
I continue to watch the show hoping that things will improve, but I mix it in with watching previous season episodes to make the new one’s easier to deal with.
They dont necessarily have to put booth and bones back together immediately but they sure do have to bring back the character interactions including all the folks at the Jeffersonian or they WILL lose viewers, and ultimately the show’s ratings.

  75. LD on December 11th, 2010 7:30 pm

Bingo, you need a medical check-up. Everything you wrote is preposterous and insane. Or vindictive.

“Booth’s cruelty should not be tolerated or condones by the FOX network.”???????????
Booth is a FICTIONAL character created by H. Hanson, S.Nathan and the writing staff of “Bones”. Everything Booth does and says is IMAGINED and DECIDED by the creative team of “Bones” and Fox Studios and Network.

“David is a producer and director and actor, he knows how to deliver a line and is a great performer. This season his out to lunch or is his abuse of Brennan his by choice? David doesn’t like to be in the lab, well suck it up,…”???????
Again, are you insane? You’re making ridiculous assumptions and preposterous accusations. David’s abuse of Brennan? Brennan is fictional. Booth and Brennan are FICTIONAL CHARACTERS, Emily and David are real life people, ACTORS who deliver LINES OF DIALOGUE written by the above-mentioned creative staff. In real life, David and Emily are pretty close. Their friendship is by choice, their choice. On screen, they play two characters whose relationship is decided by the producers.

  76. Jane on December 11th, 2010 7:47 pm

I loved the show! I don’t want to see Booth and Brennen living happy ever after (until the last show). Did all the Hannah haters feel that way when Brennen took up with Sully? I loved that relationship.

My real concern is: coming on after American Idol!! WHAT!!! They did that to Glee last year and Am Idol ran long ALL the time and cut in to Glee. (Well, if like me needing to tape it I lost so many endings.) I hate Am Idol and I don’t want to see BONES or GLEE playing second fiddle to them!!

  77. Liz on December 11th, 2010 8:18 pm

Kim, Booth and Brennan argue like brother and sisters, sorry if I had to pick whose shoes I’d want to be in as far as Booth is concern, I’d pick Hannah’s hands down. Booth and Brennan will get together right before the show goes off the air and any way you look at it, Brennan will be the rebound, 2nd choice after Hannah.

  78. Kim on December 11th, 2010 8:21 pm

As I’ve been reading everyone’s comments, I find that a lot of people have been feeling the same frustration as I. This season has been, at best, very unsettling. I keep watching each new episode hoping that it will “turn around” only to be disappointed every time. I don’t like Hannah..no, I don’t like Kathryn Winnick. I think I could handle them adding a “love interest” into the mix if it wasn’t her. She’s absolutely painful to watch. Of all the talented actress’ out there how did they settle on her? I don’t like how Booth has been changing. Ever since Hannah showed up in the picture the only thing they’ve managed to illustrate is the sexual component to their relationship. I don’t see the “love” between them. I don’t see Booth looking at her the way he looks at Brennan. I just don’t believe him when he says he loves her. It’s not convincing at all.

Here’s how I’d like to see the story line shift…I’d like to see something happen to Brennan (possibly life threatening) that will jumpstart Booth’s protective instincts and the feelings he has for her that we all know are there. That will in turn cause friction between he and Hannah because it becomes obvious that their feelings for one another are more than just partners. Booth pleads with her that there is nothing there but Hannah (being a reporter) doesn’t believe him. She packs her bag and moves out. He continues to try to work it out with her but they continue to grow apart and he and Brennan become close again.

That’s how I’d like to see the storyline shift. I just want it to go back to the way it was.

  79. Cordy on December 11th, 2010 11:33 pm

“Can I call someone to be with you?”

    Old Booth please come back.

Any truth to the rumors that there will be a sniper in futer eps that goes after Bones because of Booth?

  80. Kate on December 12th, 2010 12:54 am

A good episode but three seasons too late.

I’m sorry, Temperance, but the show has convinced me that Booth would be better off with Hannah than you. She wants more of what he wants and she’s willing to take the risk.

Better luck next time. Maybe with Micah.

  81. Kimberley on December 12th, 2010 1:50 am

This show is now off my thursday nights viewing list. If I decide to view an episode, it is online only. I refuse to have my viewing number count in the ratings! I am not buying whatever story they are putting out. The writing is so off this season. It is no longer the show it used to be. I believe that if they continue to follow this storyline throughout the year they will not have an audience left to pay for the production of it. They have lost over a million viewers from the season premiere episode.

Hart Hanson will not do anything different unless the network makes him. He loves Hannah. He loves this storyline. He and a small fraction of the audience are the only ones who’ll be around if the writing doesn’t improve, the show doesn’t change, or this storyline continues the entire year.

I feel that the supporting cast is now bored to death with the material that they have been given so far this year. They have been swept to the side so that we can watch Booth and Hannah roll around in bed in every other scene, or make out. Who want to see this? Booth and Hannah are dull there is no substance in there relationship. They have added nothing to this story or to this season that has made it more enjoyable to watch. Also, there is no interaction with the remaining cast in the lab anymore. This was an important part of previous seasons. Also, why have they decided that flash is better than substance? I would rather watch an interesting case with clever dialogue than see some weird piece of equipment or set of remains. It feels like more effort is placed on this part of the show now than what is going into the actual storytelling and dialogue.

The thing I hate about this season most is that Brennan is suppose to suffer in every episode because she turned down Seeley Booth. How dare she say, no, and not pay! This is the message I’m getting from the writing so far. This storyline and its execution has killed my respect for the writers of this show. How pathetic Brennan now appears! Booth is the golden boy and should be worshipped by Brennan. No, he shouldn’t be. Let me guess, there was a male writer who thought this one up. Brennan, is no longer Brennan. Booth, is no longer Booth. Why is this show something worth our viewing time? Its really isn’t anymore. There are female writer’s on this show, but it doesn’t feel that way. It feels like the male producers are making all the final decisions and are waging war on Brennan.

Hart’s message this season is: Brennan must pay! Our golden boy Booth must appear justified. Brennan must appear more, and more pathetic so everyone will see what a horrible mistake she made. Booth must have sex and make out in every other scene. He’s got a pretty girlfriend, because he is wonderful and deserves to be so happy. While, Brennan must remain down, sad and lonely because she made a bad, bad mistake! How dare she say no to our Booth? We will make her suffer and she must be miserable. You, the audience will be miserable and so will Brennan. Feel the angst. It is what Brennan deserves, and what you the audience want to watch every week!

I have received the message loud and clear. Please, move on and stop torturing Brennan and us. It is no longer enjoyable. It is really quite demeaning to her as a character and as a message to women in general.

  82. Jen on December 12th, 2010 2:07 am

Kate…. Hannah wants what Booth wants? I thought Booth wanted another child… of his own. Hannah wants adoption. Does Booth want a woman who can’t imagine not being a woman anymore to be a mom instead? What’s up with that? I don’t think Booth and Hannah know each other very well. Booth loves her, but it’s superficial. He loves being wanted. He loves the dream. He loves her, but he’s not in love with her.

  83. Jessica on December 12th, 2010 3:44 am

I liked this episode. In real life, timing is just as important as love or compatibility. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a TV show explore this. Bones is by no means a perfect show. The story arcs tend to feel clumsy. Not all of the acting is good. This felt genuine, though, and I hope they address the change in Brennan in future episodes. I would hate to see her simply revert back to her most detached self.

  84. CKL on December 12th, 2010 12:27 pm

I’m always curious when people use “abuse” about a character that 99.9999% of the community don’t see as abusive. It makes me wonder if they’ve suffered abuse themselves in RL and therefore can’t disconnect reality from a fictitious story.

This uber-protectiveness that someone like Bingo has for Brennan is a bit “out-there”. You need to get a grip, Bingo and as the other poster said…seek medical help. You also need to consider whether you are a “man-hater” because it sure sounds like it.

Your statement, “Booth’s cruelty should not be tolerated or condones by the FOX network”…what is that all about? It’s weird.

And this is even more weird: “This season his out to lunch or is his abuse of Brennan his by choice? David doesn’t like to be in the lab, well suck it up, that had some of the best scenes ever and you were endearing and mucho at the same time in that environment, now your gone and so is the magic. Shame and bad on you David.

Shame on David? For what? THis is fiction. And cruelty is nowhere near this story. What substances are you on when you view the episode? Or are you simply a man hater?

It’s this type of crazy statements that makes me wonder why I read comments at all.

  85. CKL on December 12th, 2010 12:32 pm

So back to my own review. I thought this was the best episode they’ve had since Critics in the Cabernet. I hated season 5 and have hated all of season 6 until now. I don’t know what the future holds; whether the writing will get any better than what we’ve had so far. But I will watch. I think the Booth haters and the Hannah haters also need to get a grip. It’s as if Booth killed someone the way people go on about his moving on. 6+ years of pining and what? Did people expect for Booth to remain celibate for the next 6 years while Brennan figured out she does have a heart? Give me a FREAKIN break. Get a grip. He moved on so deal with it. Either watch the show or stop. Either way, stop your belly-aching. It’s pathetic.

  86. Holly on December 12th, 2010 1:49 pm

CKL you appear to be the one belly aching others are just stating their opinion. The show has lost over 1mil viewers this season cheering more viewers to stop watching won’t help the show.’
I loved this eps the acting by ED was the best I’ve seen in a long time on any primetime, so was the writing, directing and cinema.etc.
I left thinking Booth and Bren are totally over, if that’s wasn’t the message the show made a major mistake with the scene in the SUV. I don’t get Booth’s coldness, he moved on big deal, does this mean he can’t be Brennan’s friends.’
The scene in the rain was awful, his friend was standing in the rain crying her heart out, a stranger would’ve stopped in given her a hug. His I saved you again came off as if he thought it was a a bother.
He couldn’t have been any colder in the SUV than a stranger who had picked up a homeless person and decided to take them to a shelter.

He sat so close to the door it was a good thing he had the steering wheel to hold on to. What happened to Booth the heart guy, you can be in love and show compassion for your friends. Pulling over and offering Brennan a hug wouldn’t have sent the wrong message. He had made it clear he wasn’t interested in her in a romantic way, she got it. Why not offer some comfort or compassion. When she turned him down she hugged him, she wanted him to be okay. This Booth this guy couldn’t have been any colder if he tried.

  87. Holly on December 12th, 2010 1:55 pm

When is enough, enough for Brennan and the fans?

  88. Sherry Soobotin on December 12th, 2010 2:15 pm

I, too, used to be an avid Bones watcher early on. For me, the change of which night the show was broadcast interfered with some episodes, and I hated the whole Angela-wild-child-goes-lesbian/bi thing. Angela and Hodgins, like Brennan and Booth, belong together. As for being “pathetic” because she cried and admitted she made a mistake, Brennan is only pathetic in the old, literary sense of the word: igniting pathos in us. Or perhaps only in we who have made the same mistake, letting go of someone we love–whether because of fear or feeling that if he really loved me, he could wait me out until I really, really, REALLY knew he loved me. I am a feminist. I have a career. But I also know that, should I die tomorrow, my position would not be retired–someone else would be hired lickety-split. To deny the desire for love is to deny humanity; to deny humanity is an insult to feminism. A well-rounded, balanced, happy life has many facets, and love is one of them. Brennan’s tears were more an outpouring of years of repressed emotion than a “boo-hoo, I ain’t got me no man” crap that some of you think they signalled. She is grieving a loss, understanding that, as some have said, timing can be everything. Sometimes those who excel at their work do so because they pour all of themselves into it; these are the people who shine and are lauded, but often have no life outside of work. If they are happy with that, God bless them. I dare say most of us want more at the end of our days.

  89. Sherry Soobotin on December 12th, 2010 2:26 pm

And don’t say I’m “homophobic” because of the Angela comment, please. THAT story line, too, came out of nowhere; there weren’t even remote hints beforehand that she was bisexual, unless you call the label “free spirit” (what does that MEAN, really? something different to everyone, I’m guessing. Usually it’s said as a euphemism for “promiscuous” and youthful, a” good thing”; you don’t see too many men or old women called a “free spirit” now, do you?) code for bisexual. I’m just saying that that plotline was a wrench thrown into the mix to see how it went; needless to say, the girlfriend was gone pretty quickly.

  90. Debbie on December 12th, 2010 2:35 pm

I still think Hannah does not add to the show. They talk about real life with the show. In real life if Booth really loved Bones, then went away he wouldn’t have gotten over her so quickly. The car scene was lame. Since when would Bones expect Booth to choose her over someone he was seeing. Then Booth asks, is there someone I can call for you so you don’t have to be alone??? Whats up with that. Who would ever do that to someone they care about, even a little bit. What kind of a man are they turning Booth into. I don’t get it. Do something quick to get this show back on track. I used to love it so much. After watching an episode I felt good, relaxed, and couldn’t wait to see the next one. Now I just feel disappointed.

  91. Eve on December 12th, 2010 3:58 pm

I think the issue with most fans is that the show has become this melodrama for the most part. The lighter parts are often ridiculous rather than humorous. I miss the lighter Bones, which had a mix of emotions. This season has been full of angst and often sadness. The balance is gone. It is just someone’s preferance. People should not get upset because someone feels this way and does not want to watch the show. Also, the reset of the show has resulted in less of the regular cast. This is a disappointment since we really enjoyed the squint interaction with the whole team, especially Angela and Brennan. This episode was great but it should have ended with Booth remembering that Brennan had a best friend named Angela.

  92. alice on December 12th, 2010 5:20 pm

I loved ‘The Doctor In The Photo’ it was the best episode of Bones i’ve seen in ages by a clear mile… and so very sad too. My heart broke for Brennan, she finally made a very scary leap… idiot Booth. Emily Deschanel was fantastic and excellent acting from her as Brennan, finally confronted with her own demise and realising a few home truths. I think Hart Hanson has screwed up alot with this show lately – namely Booth’s coma episode, the Hundreth, Hannah being far too NICE! Arrrrgghhh! but i will say The Doctor in The Photo was written pretty close to perfect in terms of Temperance’s character. I think this is exactly what needed to happen to get her to realise what she really wants. Alas the path to true love never runs smooth, but at least we know Hannah’s not sticking around and finally Booth and Brennnan are starting to find their way back to eachother…

P.S I just pray i’m not right in thinking Hanson is going to do the dreaded Booth-proposes-to-hannah-and-brennan-stops-the-wedding-half-way-through-and-declares-her-love distaster or someone will have to stop me from throttling him!

  93. brisker1 on December 12th, 2010 8:30 pm

Sherry, you got it all right.
Like i said in an earlier post, it wasn’t Bones being ‘weak’ because she doesn’t have a man. She’s starting to figure out that she actually does have those feelings for Booth — and for someone like Bones, that must be confusing and terrifying. She isn’t being portrayed as a woman who’s ruined because the man she loves turned her down, people really need to get off that track. If you think that’s who Bones is, you probably haven’t been watching it since the start. Emily does an amazing job in the show and has been growing Bones’ character since day one. Regardless of the show’s questionable writing (*coughHartHansoncough*) and direction, Emily still makes Bones’ shine, even if her lines aren’t that great.
As for Booth, I really don’t know. He’s no longer my knight in shining armour riding in on a white horse, like he used to be. And, before someone gives me grief over that being “too unrealistic”, that’s exactly who he is and exactly how I (along with most other viewers) see Booth. He’s that guy who cares and loves with all he is, protective and tough but a big teddy bear too. He’s just not that guy this season. I’m not sure why, although I’m pretty sure it has to do with the introduction of Hannah. Maybe they’re attempting to make him seem more lovey-dovey with her, to show the distance between him and Bones — who knows.
The problem with that? Bones and Booth ARE the show. Of course I love Angela, Hodgens, Cam, Sweets etc, they’re an amazing supporting cast (and yes, I’m very much in favour of Angela/Hodgens). But Bones and Booth are why we’ve been faithful for so long. Their relationship, their connection, their “oh-my-god-can-you-two-please-just-kiss-for-cryin-out-loud?!”, it’s why I watch this show.. It’s why we all watch this show.
It’s just sad that so many of us are so disappointed and heartbroken by where this is going. Shape up or ship out, Bones’ writers. Bring back our lighthearted love affair with this show!

  94. CB loves Bones on December 12th, 2010 10:25 pm

I have to agree with alot of you that have said that the Hannah character is shallow, her relationship with Booth is shallow. I think that just reinforces that Booth is “trying” to move on from Brennan with the first pretty face he could find. Why should he look at her like he does Brennan, like someone said, he’s making himself love Hannah, he’s just not in love with her like he is Brennan. I think that possibly HH is saying that they just have a physical relationship, hence the reason for seeing all the sex, but in the end there’s no real substance to their relationship.

  95. LB on December 13th, 2010 1:23 am

It is so interesting how difficult for us to accept that things end. To refuse a cycle pattern kills its up and downs, flattens the flow or stops it. Is this what we want at the heart: immortality? A flame always ON? When it is gone we grieve. Not sex, love, friendship, life or death. The invisible flame, spark burning in the background, warming the bones. We crave this warmth. Like primordial fire kept alive by first woman. Sometimes it goes out. It gets cold. The show gets cold. We are cold. The death smiles. Joy in the death… joy in keeping us warm

  96. Booth Haters Anonymous on December 13th, 2010 2:47 am

Actually, I don’t hate Booth. But there should be a group called this since so many of you seem to hate him these days. It’s amazing how so many can see different things. I have never seen Booth as a cruel person. I didn’t see him being cruel in this episode in the final scene.

Everyone likes to dictate how THEY would respond and superimpose that on how Booth should respond and because he didn’t respond like THEY would, they hate him and they call him cruel and mean, etc.

I am so tired of hearing this. We heard this same junk at the end of the season 5 finale. Oh…why didn’t he kiss her? He should have kissed her? Holding her hand didn’t mean anything? Geez. Give the guy a break. He apparently not only has to please Hannah, but he also has to please Bones and oh yeah I almost forgot…half the women that watch Bones.

This was the best, damn episode in a year and half. Be happy with that. Bones had a major breakthrough. Be happy with that. Oh, wait a minute, can’t be happy because she’s a 35 year old single woman that has been rejected by her “man” and she’s so weak and fragile, she won’t be able to function on her own…so we have to be angry at Booth because he didn’t comfort her in this most distressing moment…oh wait a minute, we also have to be angry at Booth because he didn’t break it off with Hannah who has become his commitment now.

We hate Booth because he wasn’t uber nice so he’s the bad guy. Now we want him to be uber mean to Hannah because of Bones, but this makes him a bad guy because he is breaking a committment. So, the guy can’t win. He will always be the bad guy…a dog for not being nice and a dog for using Hannah to get over Bones. Booth is just a dog. Nice!

This is the kind of junk I’ve been hearing and I’m tired of it. Booth doesn’t have a mean bone in his body when it comes to Brennan…why do I say this? Because he still freakin loves her and its not in him to be mean to someone he loves. If you haven’t figured that one out in the 6+ years this series has been on the air then you haven’t been watching the same freakin show I’ve been watching.

These two people are under unfortunate circumstances that have pulled them apart (thanks writers!). They are trying to function in the best way they know how protecting themselves from further hurt but cruel…no…no cruelty has been exhibited.

I thought the final scene was as dignified as could be given the circumstances. Brennan would have freaked out if he had hugged her…this is within her character. She would have seen it as a “pity hug” and would have rejected him on the spot. It was an initimate moment as is without a HUG interfering. Stop interjecting how you would react and instead try and think about what Booth and Brennan’s characters would react. What he did was RIGHT given his situation.

I’ve also heard junk about he being cruel when he asked if he could call someone for her. THey said she has no one to go to so why would he ask a cruel question like this. Well…maybe because she has friends like Angela and HOdgins or Cam.

In Booth’s current situation, he cannot be the one comforting her because it just pulls them into a more initimate setting that they need to stay away from. Dont’ you all get this? They are no longer JUST FRIENDS. They are people that have now told each other that they love each other…this is initimate and therefore, Booth could not be that touchy/feely hugger. IT creates more of a problem for his relationship with Hannah by doing this.

I know…everyone hates Hannah but she’s there and until she is kicked out, Booth has to act in the most honorable way he can towards Hannah. Why? Because that is who he is and he is the hero of the story. He is an honorable man and if you haven’t figured this out I don’t know what you’ve been watching. So a hug here would have been inappropriate. Well, enough of my rant. BTW, I’m a woman so don’t think this is a sexist view. It may be harsh to some but I’m tired of the Booth hate!

    @ Booth Haters Anonymous

    I agree with you 100% …and I’m a guy.

It was a fantastic multilayered episode and it played out the way it should. It may not have been the way we (the fans) wanted it to play out – but it played out in the way it should have, in the context of the show and its characters.

I’ve honestly become a bit tired of Bones (the show) over the last couple of years – it’s just not what it used to be, and one thing that annoys me increasingly is Bones and her rigidness, but this was the best episode in a long time, so it was more than welcome. A perfect 10.

  98. carole on December 13th, 2010 9:11 am

to me can I CALL SOMEONE hurts that booth said that to bones tells me he threw it all away for a sexual relationships with hannah and truly hoped he admits that to bones/but takes attitude toward her out of it /hannah will be written out but still dont want booth and bones in a relationship/not after hannah and her shacking up with him. hannah is a consolution prize and booth was the one that said that/EMILY did a reall good job,now its his turn/hope he does as well.

  99. carole on December 13th, 2010 9:24 am

also the comment about bones weight was so uncall for and what was the purpose for skipping 7 months/also are they going clear up the contradictions about hannah before she leaves.

  100. Marle Barle on December 13th, 2010 1:28 pm

I agree with you “Booth Haters Anonymous” and I laught about your comments. I agree there must be another show of Bones being shown, which we did not see.
I never saw anything mean, rude, cold, crue etc. in Booth in the Endscene and I think in all of season 6 he has not changend a lot, only that he distant himself in some ways. Which is understandable. He is in a relationship right now and if we like it or not, we have to live with it until ……??????
Maybe the writers should explain sometimes a little bit more what they like us to see in an scene, because it looks like a lot of people don’t get what they intent to say.
I have to admitt, that I have to watch a second time to get it.

  101. carole on December 13th, 2010 4:16 pm

this show is having to do damage control,so let hannah be explain and maybe more likeable/for booth he needs to remember how brennan and angelea sat by his side for 4 days when he had brain tumor surgery and this alone should make him lose the attitude/for her I WOULD LET HER FIND A NEW GUY.

  102. Holly on December 13th, 2010 10:56 pm

    Booth Haters Anonymous ,
Like you I’ve been reading around the net and hearing from those off the net that Booth’s reaction was unBooth like and cold. Whether that was the intent of the writers and the actor(DB) doesn’t matter, the audience perception is everything.
It’s a strong stmt when viewers have to be told a character is a hero, if it isn’t obvious to the audience, the writers have lost their way. There are Booth lovers, fans who have supported Booth no matter what even they have a problem with Booth’s reaction to Bren outpour of tears.
It’s not a matter of liking, loving or hating Booth it’s about not liking the way Booth responded to his friend in pain.
Nothing said on the boards will change viewers perception it’s up to the show runners if they read the boards to decide to take note of all that’s being said or continue as they have so far.

  103. sarajade on December 14th, 2010 2:37 am

Holly, how many years has this show been on the air? 6+ years. And you mean to tell me that people have forgotten that Booth is the HERO of this story after 3 short months? You must be joking. He was their hero last year and the years previous to this one. How did he all of a sudden become a DOG as so many describe him???

Do you honestly think the writer’s are going to take Booth from HERO to VILLAIN? People need to stop and think, rather than react emotionally…because that is exactly what everyone is doing….reacting emotionally to the separation of their beloved B&B. They are NOT trying to THINK about what the writer’s are doing. THey are throwing tantrums and screaming bloody murder because they aren’t getting what they want. Carla Kettner’s interview clearly states two things 1) Booth is an honorable man 2) the B&B LOVE story is going to be a rocky road. And yet, after reading this………people are not “getting” what the writer’s intent is? Give me a break.

Yes…the writer’s did fail …they failed in thinking that all the fans would understand the complexities of what they were doing with Booth and Brennan’s characters. They thought we would buy into their risk of separating these two but it didn’t work because our emotions were so deeply invested in B&B as a couple. But, if we’d actually stepped back….took a breath…and tried to really understand what the separation was all about…Booth is protecting himself from the hurt he experienced at Bones’ hands…..then there wouldn’t have been any backlash. The writer’s failed…but so did the fans when we gave up our “faith” in them. Despite this “failure” on the writer’s part…one thing did not change…….they would not make Booth into this hateful, mean person that everyone is now accusing him of being. We should never have given up on Booth’s character but we’ve thrown him away like he was yesterday’s trash. Shame on us!!! WE should have know better based on the HISTORY of his story for these 6+ years…..we should have known better and kept the faith. So I agree with Booth Hater’s Anonymous………..enough witht he Booth hate. He’s our hero !!!!!!!

  104. carole on December 14th, 2010 10:37 am

hannah does not add to the show and I THINK booth does not respect her and hart hanson should admit how this storyline hurt this tv show/at the same time he made it clear to fans that booth and brennan will not be in a sexual relationship, after way booth did with hannah, just think him and cam was secertive and hannah has been a lot of half truths why would bones want that/booth could admit to his self that friends and working together is better then no relationship at all but lose the attitude/angelea please be the friends she needs and her dad should give her a big hug and booth could grow a set and apolozie to her/fan need to see that/maybe fox will let them stay on at 8 on thurs.

  105. carole on December 14th, 2010 10:57 am

hart hanson should let booth find a best friend to talk to or maybe pops/someone to explain why he did what he did/maybe jack or micah or cullen, gordon, gordon or caroline but not sweets/that is if his wants us to liked him again.

  106. TerBear1 on December 14th, 2010 2:47 pm

I was initially crushed by this episode. Seeing Brennan like that killed me. But everyone needs to realize that Booth would not be Booth if he just dumped Hannah to be with her. He is the hero of this show and with that comes a sense of honor and respect. How would Brennan be able to trust him if he just got rid of Hannah to be with her? Hello. I have to have faith it will eventually work out. Hannah? She’s a journalist who goes to other countries, etc etc….she’s going to get restless and bored being in one area and eventually she will ride off into the sunset. She’s not good with children, in the storyline, she doesn’t want children, and Booth is a family man. He’s honorable and the only person Brennan would ever be able to be with, be herself and be accepted. They are a ying/yang relationship, complete opposites that complete each other…… it will work out. Be patient.

  107. TerBear1 on December 14th, 2010 3:00 pm

Another comment…. what everyone fails to realize is that in the end, even though “he’s in a relationship” he was still there for her, saving her from being run over by that car. He is still in love with her, still following her and still saving her from herself….. I agree that they are dragging this out but it makes it more interesting, more nail biting and more intense watching this relationship unfold. If I didn’t have the faith I have in soul mates, I would probably have given up watching this long ago, but alas, I am a romantic at heart so I will not give up on them. None of you should either.

  108. carl on December 15th, 2010 11:17 pm

just watch on tnt and for some reasons I SEEM TO HEAR IT BETTER,the car scene booth wasnt the jerk I THOUGHT he was.

  109. Chuck on December 16th, 2010 12:04 am

Just saw this episode for the 2nd time and liked it much better. Hope Micah, real or not, becomes part of the cast: he’s a great foil for Brennen. There are so many surprises, beginning with the opening dinner party, followed by Brennen’s fixation on the Dr and her spiral into a kind of madness to her final breakdown in the car, I was overwhelmed first time around. Second time, it all worked beautifully, reminding me of a Brahms symphony.

Will be interested in seeing how the writers handle the “new” relationship between Brennen and Booth. Now that the cat’s out of the bag.

Have no problem with Hannah or Daisy – Daisy’s meant to be irritating, serving the same function as Zach, each basically shaking things up in their own way. And Hannah, as a reference to the Real World, brings a non-neurotic perspective to the show.

Finally, beware ratings! The show has changed, the characters grown, and, to remain successful, the storylines have to reflect that maturation. Which means a shift (or not) of audience.

  110. crystal gayle on December 16th, 2010 6:34 am

Well..maybe brennan said no to Booth when he asked her to give them a ‘shot’
because she is scared that if it won’t work-out, it will be awkward for all of them..thier team will not be the same again..and bones don’t believe in “love” right?she’s just don’t wan’t to hurt booth and herself.
Booth told Brennan that he is going to move-on right?and he did..
when she realized that she made a mistake..it was too late..we can’t expect Booth to just jump-on it or something..he have a girlfriend(not that i like hannah)..
i just hope writers will find a way to put them back together(B&B)
because that was the real reason why ‘people” watch the show right?i mean, their chemistry is what makes the show more interesting.

  111. carl on December 16th, 2010 8:44 am

wish they would explain the contraditions shacking up and then not ,pat on the behind for sex and then not caring she not in the bed, expensive black dress, expensive computer, staying in the hospital overnite for a leg injury below the knee, but most of all the bar scene and why all that was social skills/and I think when she finds out Bones just wouldnt live with a man,she will make a changed to her living arraingment, but we not to noticed any of this, thats the reasons you cant get thru on there blog.

  112. Gia Francis on December 16th, 2010 11:21 am

I absolutely loved this episode. I thought it was less shallow than the rest of this season and I knew that Booth was going to reject her (i mean he couldn’t just say “yes, i love you too Bones.” But i do think that he was a little too insensitive in this episode. Booth wouldn’t have said “is there someone i can call”. He would have maybe touched her or held her in silence. It seemed out of character and actually ruined a very good scene. Hopefully more humor will be injected back into the show. I’m not feeling the whole Booth and Hannah romance (they odn’t have chemistry) but he did say he was moving one. We all know that the writers won’t let Booth and Bones have a relationship until the series ends or gets cancelled so please let Bones have someone so maybe she won’t be as depressed as she’s been this season.

  113. cathy on December 16th, 2010 12:40 pm

booth and hannah has a lot of rubing into bones face/why else did she go to the lab and make sure brennan knew she was moving in with him,yes they have lost a half million loyal fans, but this is 1 fan who hopes he wise-up and tells her the truth about hannah.

  114. cathy on December 16th, 2010 1:13 pm

want Angelea to make it clear to Booth that brennan really wanted her relationship with SULLY to be sexually and she the one that made that move/maybe that tell him she didnt really wont that with him and just be happy with easy hannah.

  115. sarah on December 17th, 2010 8:17 am

i think the episode was really great , and emily’ performance was great but i don’t like the end when booth said can i call someone to be with you, that was really hard

  116. Celeste on December 21st, 2010 10:28 pm

I have very mixed views on this season. On one hand, I absolutely hate it because that natural chemistry between Booth and Brennan has seemed to have disappeared and it now seems forced and awkward. (Not to mention the whole Hannah situation, which I absolutely loath. I mean, no one is that perfect. Give her a flaw. Make her human. Then it might not seem like HH is trying to stuff her down our throats as much.)
But then on the other hand, there will be these moments in some of the episodes where I’ll see a glimpse of the old B&B and I’ll remember why I loved the show to begin with.
But I think I’m mostly put off by the show as a whole. It used to be (back when it was at it’s peak, in my opinion) about a cocky FBI agent and a bad ass scientist who solved murders and just happened to be in love. Now it’s about the awkward relationship between a seemingly indifferent FBI agent and an extremely socially-awkward scientist, who just happen to solve murders. I miss the good old days when the episodes were about the cases, where Bren was bad ass and funny and Booth was arrogant but loving. Now it’s just…not any of that.
I guess what I’m trying to say is for Hart to grow a pair and stop thinking about how they can stretch out the show for the most amount of season. It has long surpassed it’s prime, just give us fans what we want and end it on a happy not.

  117. ema on December 23rd, 2010 3:25 am

i just think this was THE BEST EPISODE EVER.
i cried SO hard, and it was Emily’s best performance.

Of course Bones is getting to the end. maybe one more season, but it is SO nice to see her finally with a human touch.

i’ve watched the entire serie, again and again, and this was the best episode.
    thank u so much.

  118. Rachel on December 26th, 2010 9:20 pm

can somebody tell me why this season are so late?
i like to watch the next episode…….give me next episode!!!!!!

  119. Mary Pat on December 27th, 2010 3:31 am

I thought ED’s performance was great, but the entire Season 6 has been such a let-down. I don’t like the Hannah SL, the way they have made Brennan sound like an idiot on so many occasions, or the way Booth has been portrayed. I feel really sorry for the actors who are only dealing with scripts which are not as well written as in previous seasons.
As for the car scene, I didn’t expect Booth would dump Hannah and I don’t think that was what Brennan was asking. She was merely telling him that she had made a mistake, and that she regretted it deeply. But I was sorely disappointed in the manner of Booth’s reply– is there someone I can call struck me as being particularly cold and insensitive, particularly when you think of the 100th episode where she was crying after telling him that she basically wasn’t good enough for him and how she hugged him at the end. The old Booth would have found a way to gently let her down and the Old Booth, the guy with the heart, would have just called Angela or at least seen Brennan home. My real quarrel isn’t with the characters, however, but the writers who seem to enjoy making an intelligent woman seem so inept and pathetic. I think the writers are doing a great disservice to the rest of the cast, like Cam, Angela, and Hodgins who don’t get the screen time because the H. storyline seems to use up time and energy. I don’t understand why the writers torpedoed their own show. It would have been so interesting to see B&B get together as a couple, and work out the differences and friction that real life couples sometimes encounter, which actually can deepen the understanding and bond between the couple. I miss the wit and the repartee. I know some readers may say, well, why do you still watch the show? And my answer will be, in hopes that it will improve and return to some of its strengths, but if this SL continues much longer, and if Booth actually proposes to H, then, like a lot of other viewers, I”m done with the show.

  120. Robin Ball on December 30th, 2010 6:46 pm

I loved this episode. Bones showed so much of herself and her inner feelings and fears. Micah gave just enough of a sounding board for her whether he’s real or not, I hope he is, I really love him as an actor. I can see Hannah leaving Booth to follow her career and Bones being there for him and the two coming closer as a result. It’s nice to see Temperance show her human side.

  121. h on February 24th, 2011 6:26 pm

    @rich
I just happened to find this old article, and I am not gonna touch the currect, the events after the 100th episode, storyline. But I would like to add a comment about one thing in your post.
You say you have watched the show for a long time? And never seen Brennan cry? That, to me, indicates that either you haven’t seen all the episodes, or just do not remember. Try re-watching the Season 1 finale (the B/B barn scene), Critic in the Cabernet (the scene when she tells the squints about Booth’s tumor), Finger in the Nest (the B/B end scene with Ripley’s burial). Also 5×21 (B/B scene in Brennan’s apartment), 3×15 (last Brennan/Zack scene), 4×14 (B/B scene in the helicopter), 4×21 (B/B end scene in Sweets office).
Maybe she hasn’t cried in those scenes as “heartcrushingly” as in 6×09 (car scene) , but there have been many scenes, when she’s cried. And even more with tears in her eyes (being the strong person she is, and holding back those tears infront of everyone). She has shown her emotions. I’ve seen it since the Pilot. I guess not everyone did.
