The Office Recap: Phyllis and Bob’s Wedding

February 9, 2007 by

WARNING! This post contains spoilers for last night’s episode of The Office. This post and subsequent comments may contain spoilers for upcoming episodes as well, but I have asked that all be marked according with a SPOILER ALERT warning so those who want to avoid spoilers can.

So last night was the big wedding. Phyllis Lapin is now Phyllis Vance, Vance Refrigeration. And what a wedding she had. First let’s get down to the business at hand.

The first deleted scene is up at NBC.com, so o check it out.

There are some new wedding pics available at NBC.com. Here’s a few of my favorites.

The Future Mr. and Mrs. Halpert Jim and the girl that will never be Pam (aka Karen) Kelly and Ryan Scrantonicity 4-eva…ROCK ON Phyllis Vance, Vance Refrigeration

So are you ready for my random thoughts on last night’s episode? I hope you are comfortable because I’ve gone a bit crazy with the rambling. There’s a lot to talk about, and it’s posts like this one which blatantly point out that I’m no writer…HA!

From Michael’s antics, to my favorite moments, and of course the Jim and Pam saga, well there is a lot to cover. Let’s get on with it.

Oh Michael. What shall we do with you?
I’m not really sure where to start, so I might as well get the horror that is Michael Gary Scott out of the way. The way I see it, we had a few episodes as of late where Michael was acting like a semi-normal human being. Between the whole Andy thing, getting together with Jan, and bringing back Dwight – Michael was at least tolerable. But last night. Oh sweet heavens. I think the writers were aching to bring back cringe worthy Michael and they did it with gusto. For me it was borderline ridiculous (and not in a good way). It just seems implausible that someone could be so very clueless that they would act like that in public. But then again, it’s Michael Scott and anything is possible.

Best /Worst Michael moments:

  • “Phyllis, did you break wind?” (I could have really done without this long and pointless scene – it was just uncomfortable. And there was sooo much Michael in this ep, they could have lost it and been better for it)
  • Michael pushing Phyllis’s father back into the wheelchair after he tried to stand and walk his daughter down the aisle (This is bullsh*t)
  • Announcing the bride and groom before the vows were over
  • Michaels’s many toasts and the fact that he kept reintroducing himself each time

Signing the Guest Book…
So my favorite moments of last night? In no particular order…

– The cold open with Jim using Pavlov’s technique on Dwight…BRILLIANT (but they could have used the cold opening time to have more wedding scenes, no?). And I said during last night’s chat, I go a little Pavlovian myself when I hear the theme song to this show. But I don’t crave Altoids, I just grin from ear to ear.

– Evey single moment with Dwight and Angela. I think these two are perfect for each other. And I think that Dwight secretly can’t wait to reveal his lady love to all. The slow dancing outside alone was so sweet. More Dwangela please.

– Toby had a smokin’ hot date…go Toby. I wish there had been some Toby/Michael scenes last night because next to Jam and Dwangela, I think Toby and Michael are my next favorite couple on the show. Here’s to hoping the awkward storyline with Toby crushing on Pam is over. That girl is screwed up enough as it is.

– Phyllis stealing ALL of Pam’s wedding ideas – even down to her dress was ballsy. Looks like Pam and Roy might have had a nice wedding, you know…if the bride-to-be wasn’t in love with someone else. (more on that later)

– I love all things Kelly Kapoor. Kelly Kapoor and her cute tiara. Kelly Kapoor wearing white to a wedding. Kelly Kapoor wanting Pam to get drunk and tell people she was pregnant. Pretty much all things awesome…like Kelly Kapoor.

But I will say this. My favorite moment of the entire episode was definitely Ryan standing among all the single women trying to make sure Kelly didn’t catch the bouquet. It’s those subtle but brilliant moments which makes The Office the best comedy on TV.

Jim & Pam. A bit of advice. Use Yous Words…
I finally feel ok enough to talk about the Karen/Jim/Pam/Roy saga. Where to begin?

The Good: There were some sweet, wonderful and very telling Jim and Pam moments last night. Their exchange by the bar was classic JAM and it was great to see those two kids flirting and laughing again. We had Pam gazing adoringly into Jim’s eyes, and of course Jim’s telling “hypothetical” talking head:

Jim: Hypothetically, if I thought Pam was interested…then – no, it’s totally hypothetical.

Gotta love that even the camera guys are sick of these two dancing around their relationship.

The Bad: Fast forward to Pam staring at Jim and Karen while they were slow dancing. Jim catches her staring and watches as Pam stands and leaves. I wonder if he could hear ~10 million people screaming “Go after her!!” all the way in Scranton.

The Ugly: Alas he didn’t go after her, and Pam was left feeling lonely and vulnerable and just ripe for Roy’s pickins’. Yes, he’s been trying, I will give him that, but he had his chance and he blew it…or did he? It was cute that he paid the band to play “their” song, and when Pam and Roy were dancing outside, I had a brief moment of “awww”. Brief! I said brief!! But when he asked her to leave with him and she did?! Well flames might have shot out of my eyes.

I’m not necessarily happy with Jim Halpert’s behavior these days, but the look on his face when he saw Pam and Roy leaving together and holding hands. Oh boy did my heartache for him. Just when he let himself consider that maybe, just maybe Pam had feelings for him, she leaves with Roy and Jim is left with the feeling that he “misinterpreted things”…again.

But I’ll hand it to Jim, he has learned how to deflect his feelings pretty well. He was transparent as Casper the friendly ghost last night when he declared he was really happy to be there with Karen. Yeah right Halpert…we totally bought that one. Although I must admit that Jim dancing and holding up the cell phone while Karen was singing was one of the cutest Jim moments ever.

All and all it was a BAD night for Jim and Pam, but don’t fret, I think things are only going to get better from here on out. I think we are getting that much closer to these kids finally getting their act together. I’m not jumping off any ships yet. Stay positive people!! Stay positive.

My Predictions…
WARNING! My predictions are based on spoilers for the next episode. Read at your own risk.

So how do I see this playing out? Well, here’s a possible scenario. Ok, so I think that Pam and Roy most definitely spent the might together. She was feeling vulnerable and seeing the man she really loves dancing with his girlfriend did nothing for her self esteem. Roy 2.0 was being cute and sensitive and she thought…what the hell.

I think that next week Roy is going to come up to the office and be all cute with Pam. While Pam ultimately regrets her decision to leave with Roy, Roy assumes that they are getting back together. I could even see a talking head where Pam says something like “Yeah, Roy has changed a lot since I broke off the wedding.” But we all know she’s just considering Roy again because she thinks Jim is over her.

Fast forward to Pam’s art show. Roy shows up with his brother, and he quickly reverts back to Roy 1.0.. Pam is reminded of why she broke up with him in the first place. Roy asks her to go home with him again and she turns him down. Fancy New Beesly emerges once again and she decides to tell Roy that she can’t go home with him because she’s in love with someone else. Cut to Jim walking through the doors into the art show. And SCENE!

Yeah, it’s a little too idealistic perhaps, but cut me some slack, the vision of Pam holding hands with Roy is still etched into my brain.

Your Predictions…
This is the part where you tell me what you think is going down in the coming weeks (That’s what she said). One rule, if you are alluding to spoilers in any way, shape or form, you MUST MUST include “SPOILER WARNING” (yes in call caps) in the first line of your comment…deal?!

i completely agree with you about the whole emotional thing. i don’t think i’ve ever been more heartbroken/angry at an Office episode. When Jim says, “Not so hypothetically, I’m really glad I’m with Karen,” it was like a slap in the face and I just didn’t know what to do except scream. Oh the pain.

  2. kari on February 9th, 2007 1:50 am

Why do I always feel like the only one who relishes the emotional highs and lows The Office puts me through week by week? The TWoP forums are full of people ready to jump off cliffs, but for me, it’s episodes like this that remind me why I trust the Office to handle relationships WAY more than any “drama”. I’m used to ‘shipping for couples where I’m glad that they are in a scene together, let alone giving the kind of jem-like moments Pam and Jim get week after week. Jam shippers are spoiler rotten. This ship is the safest bet on TV.

  3. Elena on February 9th, 2007 2:02 am

But the thing is … because it seems so real, it breaks my heart to watch it and not be able to do anything, you know? It’s the most chemistry I’ve ever seen a couple have on the screen, and after 2 seasons where Pam was unavailable, I expected season 3, in which she is finally single, to bring her and Jim together. And now, it’s really been like a slap in the face and I’m left with absolutely no hope.

  4. kari on February 9th, 2007 2:24 am

There’s hope in the look on Pam’s face while watching Jim and Karen dance, Elena. If the whole episode had been cute Pam/Roy moments and cute Karen/Jim moments, I might share in your dispair. Also, there was that nice little tidbit we got today about Rashida. Like I said before, SAFE BET.

  5. neverenoughjam on February 9th, 2007 2:41 am

I’m just tired of being jerked around every week. The show is not funny any more. I miss the *comedy*. The level of angst over Jim and Pam is so high now, it overwhelms the rest of the episode. And I really, really think Michael is past funny now. He needs to be recalibrated or something. In fact, I wish NBC and Greg Daniels would consider putting a definite expiration date on this series, like Babylon 5, so that the writers would have the freedom to write a seriously non-contrived story arc, and we would not be left with the prospect of YEARS of this sort of drawn-out, artificial, manipulative nonsense.

Ya know, the fans got together and put enough pressure on the network to get the first Office supersized episode. What are the chances we could get together and pressure the network to bring Jam back together so we can go back to watching a funny show every week?

  6. kari on February 9th, 2007 3:28 am

I really strongly disagree with you, neverenoughjam. Bring Jam back together? I don’t understand what you mean by that. When were they together? I also don’t understand how the angst is overwhelming now, when for me, the level of angst was higher last season during episodes like “The Carpet”. We had less hope then than we do now. Also, “Travelling Salesman” and “The Return” had Michael pitch-perfect (IMO) and toned down. That counters “over-the-top” episodes like PW. I don’t see Michael as getting progressively MORE over-the-top as the series progresses, but instead that is more of an episode specific problem. He was hard to watch tonight, I agree, but he was also hard to watch on the Booze Cruise, which is a great episode and FULL O’ANGST.

Anyway, sorry for ranting so much in your comments kath. I needed an outlet, and I’m a little afraid of TWoP right now. Yikes, looking back at my typos is making me blush.

  7. kari on February 9th, 2007 3:31 am

Last thing, then I’m done. I promise.

I do agree with you, NEJ, about the expiration date. I want this show to go out on top.

  8. GMMR on February 9th, 2007 7:05 am

NEJ – I have to respectfully disagree with you on one of your points. I think your affection for the JAM storyline might be taking over your view point of the show. You say the show isn’t funny anymore and you miss the comedy? I personally think the show is VERY funny, but when people focus on all the Jim and Pam stuff it’s possible to “wish away” the comedy just get to the relationship stuff.

  9. kilwiggle7 on February 9th, 2007 7:58 am

I thought tonights episode was quite good. Despite the Jam angst, but isn’t that what you have come to expect of the show. How many tv shows have you watched go downhill once the favored couple gets together? I’m not saying that the Office is going to fall into that catagory, much the opposite in fact. I think the writers are prolonging the coupledom of Jam in order for each of them to appreciate what they have further on down the road. It will make for a much stronger relationship when they have to jump over all these hurdles to get to one another. Rather than just throwing them together, the writers are evoking emotion in each of the viewers, so they get more and more excited about the prospect of these two together.

wow, long rant there. gmmr- i totally agree that ryan knocking down the bouquet so kelly didn’t catch it was THE funniest moment. michaels speech, and attitude walking down the aisle was painful to watch but funny as all get out. The intro with Jim and Dwight as a pavlovian dog…. too funny for words… oh and Scrantonicity ROCKS!

  10. Kismet on February 9th, 2007 9:10 am

I agree with you on your predictions, GMMR!

I think Cocktails is going to be the JAM breakthrough episode.

  11. Amy on February 9th, 2007 9:18 am

Each week I look for a little hope between Jim and Pam and each week I get more angst… I have read around the internet that everyone with the show does not want Jim and Pam together because it will “ruin” the storyline. Fine. At this point, I don’t care who they end up with as long as there is some comedy between them. I have always looked to the Jim and Pam story as the comic relief to Michael’s cringe worthy behavior. Now it’s just all cringe worthy. Thank goodness for the comic genius played out between Dwight and Jim. They have always been my favorite couple on the show.

I know that the writers are trying to keep the story “real” but please, give Jim and Pam something to laugh about…smile…smirk…anything!

  12. HealthcareHottie on February 9th, 2007 9:42 am

“transparent as Casper the friendly ghost” – LOL, you got that right GMMR.

As much as we all wanted him to go after her, what was he supposed to do, just leave Karen standing alone on the dance floor? We know he doesn’t play like that. He gave Pam a clear signal when he was flirting with her at the bar and she didn’t act on it. Also, she is giving him mixed signals again and he’s still afraid of getting hurt. First he sees her looking at him longingly one minute and she’s so upset she walks out and the next minute he sees her leaving with Roy and holding hands. I don’t blame him for being hurt and confused and not knowing what to think. I think that talking head about being glad he’s with Karen is an attempt to regain his composure. Although it was not very convincing, it probably made him feel a little better at the moment.

This is completely off the topic, but I didn’t know where else to post it. I was watching ER last night and the Chilli’s manager from the Dundies episode was on it. I couldn’t place him at first and then realized I had seen him on the office, but I couldn’t remember which episode and then I realized he was the one who took a copy of Pam’s license and “she is not welcome at this restaraunt chain ever again.” He was part of a review board deciding if Pratt’s medical license should be revoked, so I guess there’s a thread there with parts he plays and licenses. I just thought it might be a point of interest.

  13. duckyxdale on February 9th, 2007 9:49 am

I’m all over the place with this. I feel that if Jim and Pam get together fine, the series is not about JAM its about The Office. Sure, Jim and Pam are a highlight but they in no way shape or form should be the main focus of the show. It should just be an added treat.

This isn’t FRIENDS. It’s not about Ross and Rachel its about working in an office and the characters that are involved in the mundane existence lived within those four walls.

I want funny. Period. I don’t want love and relationships (though I do love JAM so don’t get on me here) I just want them to bring the funny.

  14. Becky on February 9th, 2007 9:51 am

Well, I love it all so I’m fine with everything. But my heart did break last night. I had to scream about how my heart was breaking, and my three year old told me not to worry because he was still my friend (how sweet is he?)

I couldn’t believe she left with Roy. Just broke my heart. Although, I’ve noticed that happens a lot with couples who have been together for a long time and then split up. It’s kind of a booty call. I think maybe Roy is going to end up reading more into it than Pam. Also, the whole being at a wedding that should have been hers had to just depress her.

Loved Ryan knocking the bouquet. Also Toby’s hot date and his talking head about it where he was so proud of himself. How cute was that?

Scantronicity wasn’t that bad. And Kevin saying this isn’t our first wedding it’s our third – loved it. And Creed. Everything about Creed rocks the house.

Also, did you wonder if the toaster that Stanley got for Phyllis is the same toaster that he had give to Pam & Roy and they gave back to him but the store wouldn’t accept it as a return so he had two toasters? (Sorry that was the worst runon sentence ever)

    I loved it.

  15. Elena on February 9th, 2007 10:00 am

Here’s what I think will happen:

Jim ditches the wedding, drives over to Roy’s house, busts open the door (Roy and Pam are not in a compromising position yet), grabs Pam and kissed her.

Haha … I honestly have no idea though. I can’t even imagine it because every week the writer’s do something totally unexpected that I can’t follow it. When Jim professed his love, I was caught off guard. When Jim called Dunder Mifflin and talked to Pam on the phone for the first time, I was surprised. When Jim called Karen his rebound, then told Karen he still had feelings for her, I was pretty sure something good was going to come out of that. But alas, it hasn’t. Therefore, I’m just praying the writers surprise me with Pam finally opening her mouth and telling Jim that she loves him too, I think I’d die of shock if that happened.

  16. Emily on February 9th, 2007 10:15 am

Wow, since the wedding was on Saturday, February 10, 2007 (see invitaion on nbc.com) and we watched it on Thursday, February 8, 2007, then we actually saw “Future Dwight” in the flesh!! LOL!

  17. courtney on February 9th, 2007 10:17 am

    My favorite moment: “Toby! Yeah!”

  18. duckyxdale on February 9th, 2007 10:19 am

    Emily, that makes me giggle.

  19. Amber on February 9th, 2007 10:21 am

I agree with Elena that the ball is in Pam’s court for now. And she needs to lay all her cards out on the table. How many other cliches apply?
And I HOPE Pam and Roy didn’t spend the night together, that she thanked him for bucking her up and being a good guy and left it at that. Maybe they negotiated giving it another try, but didn’t fall back into old patterns so quickly. Though I gotta admit, I really felt for Roy when he said “I was the one who wanted to get married.”
But in my dream last night Jim mailed Pam a diamond ring. In a pumpkin. Maybe the writers will try that?
And I think Michael was on cue with how cringeworthy he was. I mean, remember him as a Dundies emcee? Or (as others have mentioned) the booz cruise? It’s excrutiating every time, which is maybe why it seems over the top each time he’s at top form, but I don’t think it was out of character at all. He loves attention, and when there’s an opportunity he’s at his absolute worst/best.
I squeed the most with Toby and Dwangela moments, but I had to replay all the Jam moments.

  20. Future Dwight on February 9th, 2007 10:25 am

The Jim & Pam storyline has reached a point at which it no longer makes any sense, and it’s clear from things that Greg Daniels says in interviews that he thinks the story is over when they come together — which is A) not neccessarily true, and B) disappointing to hear from one who is so good at thinking outside the box in other respects. So now we have people acting out of character and deeply artificial roadblocks being set up that do nothing but sit there like a gaping maw sucking at the heart of the show.

Also? This episode was just not terribly funny. It was embarassing, but embarassing does not neccessarily equal funny, and most of it was just stupid. That hasn’t always been the case the last few weeks, but the last two have been wanting in my opinion.

My prediction? The show stumbles about with this plotline until it’s so stale you can smell it, and eventually I quit watching because I no longer care.

  21. Mandy on February 9th, 2007 10:27 am

Great call Becky. I’m sure it is the same toaster.

I totally missed Ryan knocking the bouquet out of Kelly’s hands. I can’t wait to watch it again tonight.

I loved the whole beginning with Dwight and Jim. How funny. I wonder if I can do that with my co-worker?

I hated that Pam left with Roy, but I kind of understand why she did it. She’s at a low point right now because she doesn’t think Jim loves her anymore and she can’t seem to escape Jim and Karen. Hopefully she will tell Jim how she feels soon, maybe at the season finale.

  22. Mandy on February 9th, 2007 10:29 am

I think the perfect end to The Office would be the Jam wedding. I don’t think it could get better than that.

  23. Emily on February 9th, 2007 10:31 am

I think the way that the writers are handling the Jim-Pam relationship is totally believable.

It’s totally believable that a woman who is feeling sad and lonely and full of regret while watching her Real Love dance with someone else would go back to a “security blanket” — a former love who is offering comfort and feel-good, etc. I’ve been there. It happens. 100% believeable.

Also, Jim trying to convince himself, and profess to the world, that he is glad he is with Karen? 100% believeable. He was hurt before (2x) when Pam said told Jim she was staying with Roy. So as Jim sees Pam leave with Roy, he’s gotta be thinking, “Man, if I had told Pam how I really feel at the bar, or asked her to dance, she would have shot me down again!”

And I did not catch the fact that Ryan deflected the bouquet…until I rewound and watched the last 1/3 of the show again (admittedly for purposes of JAM-analysis).

  24. Emily on February 9th, 2007 10:40 am

Just a comment on Michael: he behaves badly at times of stress and pressure (Booze Cruise [pressure to be the Master of Ceremonies], after Carol left him at Diwali [trying to kiss Pam], the Convention, Phyllis’s wedding, etc.). I think the writers are, this season, trying to show us how Michael desperately wants to be loved. In Season One, Michael was wincingly horrible without apparent reason, and now we know him better. And there’s a weird adrenaline that flows in your veins when you get to a certain point of not feeling liked/loved and things are not going the way you want.

Plus, *warning to the unmarried among you*, anyone who is even slightly or occasionallyunstable, unbearable, overbearing, a control-freak, etc. gets 100 times worse when they are a member of a wedding. Just something to keep in mind when you plan your Happy Day…

  25. Emily on February 9th, 2007 10:41 am

Why didn’t we get to meet Kevin’s fiancee? She’s totally cute!

And we all cheered for Toby, didn’t we?

  26. Heather on February 9th, 2007 10:50 am

The show definitely had some over the top Michael Scott moments but that’s what the show is about! I mean if he wasn’t the way he is the show would not be what it is! And the amazing supporting cast gets so much screen time that we get those cringeworthy Michael Scott moments in small doses. I don’t think that the Jam storyline takes away from the show at all! I mean there were so many hysterical moments in this episode for example and they manage a bit of Jam angst which I love. I agree w/ GMMR – sublte things like Ryan knocking the bouquet out of Kelly’s path, or the refrigerator on Phyllis and Bob Vance’s (Vance Refrigeration) wedding cake?? I want Jam together as much as the next person but I would rather that be done during the final season (which hopefully will not be for a very, very, very long time!). I mean the storyline could definitely get old and I could be eating my words but right now I’m loving it and still dying laughing at the show!! Best show on TV!!

    BTW – TOBY YEAH!!:)

  27. kim on February 9th, 2007 11:12 am

If ever an episode left me screaming “aaaaauuuugggghhh!” all night, it was this one. From Michael’s over-the-top antics (okay writers, we get it… enough already!) to the lost chances between JAM.

My son keeps reminding me, “It’s only a show, Mom!” LOL!

Yes, I agree – more Dwangela! Her Jackie Kennedy-esque ensemble had me in stitches, and their meeting scene and subsequent dance moment were great.

  28. Jo on February 9th, 2007 11:28 am

Two great lines: “Toby! Yeah!” and “Webster’s dictionary defines wedding as the melding of two metals under intense heat”. Ah, I love when Michael messes up words.

Is any one else convinced that Michael when through some kind of serious childhood trauma?

  29. Becky on February 9th, 2007 11:33 am

I completely missed the refrigerator on top of the cake. I loved that they called him Bob Vance of Vance Refrigeration during the ceremony. How cute – and how sad that no one seemed to think it was strange.

The scene at the bar when Jim told Pam her dancing was cute – I thought it reminded me of “The Fight” (I think) where Pam told Jim he had nice teeth and he was so happy about that.

  30. Gail on February 9th, 2007 11:41 am

This should have been a super sized episode to include more. . you know a wedding takes a long time to cover. . there were so many openings to be explored further. One can only hope that there is follow up conversations about the wedding in the next few episodes. . . although it appears that they are jumping to something quite separate from the wedding next week.

  31. dada95835 on February 9th, 2007 11:45 am

I liked this episode, but i’m still cringing from Michael’s antics. However (and i can’t believe no one’s mentioned this) I did love the part of his reception toast where he says “Marriage…” like the priest from The Princess Bride! I laughed out loud! How would you spell that? Mahrwwige?

i sure hope Pam didn’t sleep with Roy.

I’m wondering if Pam will give Roy a second chance? Maybe that’s how they’ll prolong the storyline. But i do want JAM together! Oh, poor Jim and those confusing signals! And i agree – Pam needs to get her butt in gear and just tell Jim about her feelings already!!

  32. Heather on February 9th, 2007 11:46 am

I agree that it should have been a supersized episode – but I feel like that about all of them so maybe I’m not the best to judge!:)

  33. Katie on February 9th, 2007 12:52 pm

I think my exact words when Pam and Roy left together were, “No, no, no, no, no!” I’m so in love with the idea of JAM that it’s borderline obsessive. Good episode though!

  34. Jess on February 9th, 2007 1:12 pm

My prediction–I haven’t seen any spoilers (I’m trying to be good) but when they go to Pam’s art show I really want one of her pieces to be reminiscent of Jim in some way. Like maybe a scene of the roof or something else completely odd and romantic that we all know they won’t have in the episode. But still.

Sigh. Last night’s episode wrecked me (except for Ryan knocking the bouquet away from Kelly) and I just don’t know if I can take much more of this. πŸ™‚

  35. Psappy on February 9th, 2007 1:16 pm

My Predictions for Business School: WARNING CONTAINS SPOILERS

Pam will have a TH where she tells the camera that Roy was sweet, and then cut to her saying, “Wait, no, No. I didn’t go home with him, we talked and he took me back to my car.”

Jim will have a TH about Pam’s art show “Yeah, Pam’s got an art show coming up, that’s great, good for her. Am I going to go? No, I mean… I wish I could but Karen and I planned this thing and I said I’d go with her.”

Pam will have art show. Some of the office crew will attend, some will give her positive feedback, others negative. Roy will show up with his brother. Roy will continue to be sensitiveRoy while his brother will just sit there laughing at his poor attempts to be nice. Pam will be annoyed by the brother’s antics. Roy will ask Pam to go home with him, she will say No. And he’ll be all, “what do you mean?” She’ll say look Roy, you’re sweet but it’s not going to work. We just want different things, blah blah blah. Roy leaves sad and dejected, his brother laughing at him some more.

Pam will look at her watch, realizing that Jim won’t be coming (or perhaps she will know that he’s not coming) and start to pack up. She leaves her post for a second, perhaps to load her car, go the restroom, whatever, and when she comes back Jim will be there. He’ll look for her, not see her, and just stare at the paintings. He notices something in one of them and realizes that her paintings are about him in a way. We see surprisedJim! face to the camera. We will then get another TH where he says ” Yeah, I liked Pam’s art. She’s so talented, (Jim grin) and leave. Pam will come back and the cameracrew will tell her that Jim came and said that he loved her art. Pam will say “He came? (huge smile) Yeah, I’m glad he came, and I’m glad he liked my art”. End scene.

I so love the GMMR prediction for the next episode that I can’t add my own two cents. I especially love the Roy 2.0/1.0, since I believe that’s EXACTLY what we’ll see with him. Once a rat, always a rat. And the rest of it is completely plausible, too.

I usually watch TV to escape from reality. But, watching Jim and Pam, I become addicted to the roller coaster of real vs surreal moments. I want Jim and Pam to be together. However, I must admit that I want it to work out in an real-life, awkward way. (JAM fans- please don’t hurt me for this comment.)

I love that Pam and Jim are “normal.” They do stupid things. They say stupid things. That will make it so much more rewarding when they FINALLY get it right.

I agree with everyone that thinks that Michael has gone too far and that it’s super uncomfortable to watch. And, it might even force us to change the channel.

I wish Jan would have been there to buffer.

Psappy, you should be a writer.

  39. mg714 on February 9th, 2007 2:46 pm

I was so surprised at Pam leaving with Roy, but I know it will all work out for JAM eventually. I agree that JAM is not and should not be the focus of the show (as much as I love them) but The Office is about everyone at Dunder-Mifflin in Scranton and when we have a show that really includes everyone in the cast, those are the ones I love the most (along with those JAM moments).

I don’t think Pam and Roy slept together (at least I hope not!), but I’m sure Jim will think they did… I can’t wait for next week’s episode to see how Jim reacts around Pam now. The episodes are too short! I’d love to have some more super-sized or 1 hour eps again soon.

By the way – is it next week’s episode that was directed by Joss Whedon? I can’t wait to see it. (And JJ Abrams’ episode is coming up soon, too, right?)

    SPOILER WARNING for Cocktails

I think Karen will re-discover her old flame at the cocktail party, re-kindle that relationship over subsequent episodes, and she will leave in May. Jim will be partly crushed at the blow to his pride, and partly relieved at not having to force his affections any more. We’ll be left at season’s end with BOTH Pam and Jim being single, both of them unaware of one another’s feelings, and the audience biting through iron bars in frustration.

  41. Megan on February 9th, 2007 2:51 pm

Everyone keeps talking about how bad last night’s episode made them feel but I think Pam and Jim (however heartwrenching certain moments were to watch) made some positive breakthroughs last night.
1.) They’re talking again. It’s such a relief to watch them interact and be around each other–to share a moment. Plus–you saw the way Pam looked at Jim–she’s in love with him–she knows it–she is actually consciously aware that she loves him–this is a VERY good thing. Not like season 1 and 2 when she was in some serious denial.
2.) On some level–they definitely know the other is interested. Last night Jim allowed himself to think “hypothetically” which is a big step. Though he admitted to Karen he still had feelings for Pam and to Michael that Karen was just a rebound girl–he hasn’t let himself think about the possibility of Pam being interested yet. Last night, because he allowed himself to think of that possiblity–he definitely got hurt when Pam left with Roy–but still. It’s a step. And the boy is hoping again.
3.) Pam left with Roy but it wasn’t out of love or regret. She was vulnerable and who hasn’t felt that way? We should trust Pam. She’s a smart girl who had the good sense to call of the wedding the first time–she won’t make the same mistake twice.
4.) “The Look” Pam and Jim shared said it all. It’s obvious the writers are building something up for us here–look at the last 5 episodes–there has been some extremely significant JAM moments. Some together–but mostly individually which I think is the right way to go. Both characters definitely needed to grow on their own–so the fact that they’re apart is a good thing–though sometimes it’s absolutely murder to watch.

On the topic of whether or not the show would end if Pam and Jim got together–I cannot say. What I do think–and what seems to be the consensus of all those involved with the show–is that they are intensely focused on remaining true to is realistic. The reason we love the show so much is that we can relate to it–because it so perfectly taps into mundane existense. So–I believe that whatever the writers feel is realistic is what they’ll stick to. No worries friends. These are some talented people we’re dealing with.

Also: The Schrutes getting married in their own graves–now that’s a beautiful bit of writing πŸ™‚

    SPOILER SPEC. HERE –

You know, I think a lot of people have it half right for next week’s episode. But I don’t buy any of the speculation about Jim showing up late yadda yadda yadda. I just haven’t seen a scenario that I can believe; I think a number of people operate on what they *wish* would happen but it’s not realistic to the show. It’s really fun to speculate so I won’t take that away from people. This is just to say that I can’t figure out where the writers will go with Jim and Pam next week, and I don’t think anyone else has it right yet either.

  43. Jen on February 9th, 2007 3:43 pm

I love it, I was screaming at Jim, and then I had a very, very, very brief “awww” when they were dancing, but it was oh so very brief. And then, my heart broke, as I had season 2 flashbacks as Jim watched Pam and Roy walk out, RIGHT PAST HIM??!?!?!?!?!

oh vay, but the good news is that Karen will be out of there sooner or later, so ha. yes. hehe.

  44. John D'arc on February 9th, 2007 4:15 pm

That dress doesnt seem like something Pam would wear. And I’m surprised Pam was shocked that Phyllis stole her ideas. I mean, youd think Phyllis would have told her first.

  45. John D'arc on February 9th, 2007 4:17 pm

    I agree with NeverEnoughJam.

There IS ENOUGH JAM ON THE SHOW. the show isn’t funny, and it needs to be again.

i’m fucking tired of it all.

  46. Clare on February 9th, 2007 4:52 pm

Whew, just got back from having my griefbone set, it was a compound fracture ;). Wow, that really hurt, even though I saw it coming. Having said that, I think the show is still funny, VERY funny. BF wasn’t a favorite of mine but I thought last night’s episode was great… up until the last five. Having that moment at the END saved the rest of the episode for me, I wasn’t able to enjoy GWH because of the order I think (couldn’t get past the cold open). For me, this love story is compelling, I think it’s realistic and very well played out but the tragedy within is getting a little heavy handed. It is increasingly difficult to watch and increasingly difficult to be optimistic about. I think each relationship has a point of no return and for me, we’re getting dangerously close, for Jim and Pam and maybe for the fans.

There were some great moments though:
    – Yay Toby, she’s HOT!!!
    – I loved Ryan trying to knock the bouquet away from Kelly
    – Michael, Michael, Michael πŸ™‚ (Thank God for Michael!!)
    – Dwight and Jim’s wedding crasher exchange in the church
    – Kelly’s I look really good in white “emergency”
    – Creed swapping out the cards
    – Dwangela…love them
    – the exchange about Pam’s dancing… sigh πŸ™

I loved tonight’s episode. After last week’s “Bizzaro” Office, it was nice to have everybody back to their old ways at the wedding. Yes, Michael was way over the top, especially when compared to “The Return” & “Traveling Salesman” but, I agree with whoever mentioned that Michael only acts that way when he is trying to get attention and approval. In the case of Phyllis’ wedding, he was trying to sort-of erase the fiasco of the only other wedding he’s been in. He wanted to redeem himself so badly and he was not able to do that.

I agree that the talk with Phyllis before her wedding was sooo uncomfortable that I just wanted it to stop. But the rest was hysterical. While I definitely prefer Michael to be a little more subdued, it’s ok to have him act out occassionally. It’s funny because, after “Return” and “TS”, everybody was complaining that Michael was too calm and now, everyone is complaing that he was too over the top. Not just here but on all of the forums I read.

Regarding JAM, the one thing we all have to remember is that, while we know both Jim’s and Pam’s view of the whole thing, Jim had no idea what Pam feels, and vice versa. I think it’s easy to forget that we’re the only ones seeing the documenary right now.

All Pam knows is that Jim told her he was in love with her, then he left after she turned him down twice. They went months with almost no contact then he returns to Scranton and is kind of distant towards her, not to mention the fact that he now has a girlfriend. Don’t forget that he also made a point of telling Pam that he was seeing someone new. He barely speaks to her and is not really willing to participate in anything that reminds him of “the old days” (pranks, lunches, etc). Even his new GF brings up the kiss that now means so much to Pam and says that Jim said it was no big deal. How crushing would that be? Everywhere Pam turns, there’s Karen. And, to make it worse, she actually likes Karen. For once, she has a girl at the office that she can be friends with. She doesn’t know that he admitted he still has feelings for her.

All Jim knows is that, after declaring his feelings and laying it all on the line BIGTIME, Pam rejected him…twice. He was so torn up that he had to leave the state. While he’s gone, they have one very good phone conversation with one very awkward and seemingly impersonal good-bye. For all we know, that was their only contact while he was gone. We never found out of if he got the text messages from her. He tries to go on with his life, he tries to forget about Pam. Even though we all see that he has not done that, Pam has no idea and even Jim only admitted it to himsef after Karen made him. Pam makes a point of telling Jim that he can date whoever he wants because they’re friends. We know that it was only because of her discovery that he is dating Karen but Jim has no idea. And now, after the highs of last night (the bar conversation, the longing gaze from across the dance floor), we could all see the hope in Jim’s face. He finally seemed to sense what we all know, that Pam has feelings for him. But, just when he is willing to entertain the idea, Jim sees his one true love leave with her ex-fiance (the one she turned him down for) while HOLDING HIS HAND!!. How heartbreaking for Jim?

If I were in Pam’s position, only know what she does, I would not just go running up to Jim and tell him my feelings. If I were in Jim’s shoes, I would not go running after Pam, given the fact of past rejection.

The ball is definitely in Pam’s court and it rips me up that she left with Roy. I pray that they did not sleep together. But, the writers have done this storyline with perfection so far. It is very real. How many of us have experienced that horrible moment when your crush catches you staring at them? How often does it happen that old flames reunite for one night?

I agree with whoever said that most TV couples don’t get as much tension-filled interaction in whole seasons as these two get in each episode. They are THE BEST “almost-couple” on TV right now, possibly ever. I just hope that one day, everybody in The Office gets to watch the documentary.

I think by the finale, there will be some HUGE developments and we will once again be left with a ginormous cliff hanger revolving around JAM. Hopefully this time, the resolution will be different πŸ™‚

  48. MJ on February 9th, 2007 8:27 pm

Okay, here goes. I agree that Michael was over the top, but disagree that the show was not funny. I thought it was a hoot. Agree the JAM moments are getting a little better and it broke my heart seeing Pam and Roy walk away hand in hand. What I think should happen is the show that Jim, Karen, Michael, and Jan attend a party (not sure which upcoming show that is) and the rest of the Dunder Mufflin bunch go out for drinks, that things don’t go well for Jim and he ends up meeting Pam where their all at and Pam tells him how she really feels. Hopefully she won’t be drunk.

  49. LaLa on February 9th, 2007 10:44 pm

I agree that Michael was too much last night and that it was not believable. However, on the whole, I thought that the episode was really funny. That being said…

Last night’s episode was definitely “Valentine’s Day done WRONG” – sorry, but that NBC promo really irked me, because it was very misleading. Frankly, the whole JAM not being together thing is BEYOND ridiculous at this point. I mean, they barely even speak to each other these days! The writers are very obviously just stretching it out as long as possible, to the point where it has lost all credibility and believability. I’m sorry, but the fact that Jim still thinks that Pam doesn’t love him (and seeing her leave with Roy put a big nail in that coffin), and the fact that Pam NEVER made an attempt to tell Jim how she really feels about him in all those MONTHS after she called off the wedding… I’m sorry, but that’s just bullsh**t.

In the British version, when Dawn finally leaves her fiancee she comes back to the office and immediately kisses Tim. So, the fact that Pam made no effort to tell Jim how she felt before he returned – even when they were talking on the phone that one time! – after he basically confessed his love TWICE to her, is ridiculous. The writers are making Pam a total moron for the convenience of stretching out the love story because they’re so afraid that people will lose interest. Well, I got news: people are already losing interest because this thing has been dragged out so long.

Office Writers: TV relationships CAN work. Just look at Monica and Chandler. Or Dwight and Angela, for Petes sake, who we love seeing together. The audience loves seeing Jim and Pam together – not completely apart, like they are now. Give us what we want!!!!!!!

  50. simone on February 10th, 2007 2:52 am

Regardless of the whole JAM situation, I still felt weird about last night’s eppy. I don’t want to say the show has become formulaic, but almost… It’s like they think – “Well, Steve Carell is winning all the awards, so we had better make lots of Michael-centric episodes.” or “JAM is a really popular tv couple – let’s drag this out as long as we can.” or “People like Dwight b/c he is weird and talks about farms and graves…let’s have him say stuff about that all of the time.”

Sorry – I don’t mean to be such a downer….but I have been really disappointed in the episodes lately. I love this show so much (um, too much…so much so that it is probably what you would call an obsession!) and I’m worried about it. It used to give me warm fuzzies and now I sort of get lukewarm hairballs instead.

Do you think the revolving door of directors could have anything to do with it? Didn’t Ken Kwapis used to do most of them?
