THE PAUL REISER SHOW’s Paul Reiser Teases Larry David’s Guest Spot in the Series Premiere

Paul Reiser returns to TV — and NBC — with the series premiere of THE PAUL REISER SHOW, but that’s not the only big thing going on in his life right now.

Give Me My Remote caught up with Reiser at Nate ‘n Als in Beverly Hills where the restaurant was debuting their new “The Paul Ryeser” sandwich. Yep, they created a huge sandwich for him. Pretty darn awesome.

Reiser took some time from his sandwich promoting duties to talk with reporters about the series premiere of his new show, specifically the hilarious Larry David guest spot.

“The scene [with Larry] came about really organically,” Reiser said. “[THE PAUL REISER cocreator] Jonathan [Shapiro] and I wrote an episode where somebody offered me a game show — which was based on something that happened — and we thought, well, what would make you [want to do it], even if you didn’t want to do it? If somebody you admired was offered the same thing. Human nature goes, ‘Well, maybe now I want to do it.’ And we both went, that’s Larry David, let’s get Larry. We’re in this lovely position where it doesn’t hurt to call and I had done an episode of CURB [YOUR ENTHUSIASM] and he went, ‘Sure.'”

David’s one condition to being on the series was that he wanted to improvise their scene. Reiser admitted that made him nervous because of how scripted THE PAUL REISER SHOW is and compared the experience to “getting in the ring with Ali,” given David’s experience on CURB and the similarities between their shows.

“You never know how to describe a show, but people were saying [THE PAUL REISER SHOW] is sort of like CURB if you did CURB,” Reiser said. “Nothing wrong with that.”

And it turns out, David saw the similarities between the shows themselves and mentioned it on-camera during the filming of their scene.

“He said, ‘Never mind a game show, you know what you should do? You should do your version of my show,'” Reiser recalled. “And my head was exploding like, ‘We’re actually filming that [show], while you’re saying that.’ It was surreal.”
