BONES Recap: ‘The Hole in the Heart’

Hey, hey, BONES fans! Of all the episodes this season, I though this one finally touched on two things I’ve been wanting to see in Brennan’s character development since LAST year’s penultimate episode, “The Boy with the Answer”: Her reactions to Booth being in danger, and her sense of where she fits in with the team in the grand scheme of things (or as the season premiere called it, “the lynchpin”). And though the episode was centered around Booth, we did finally see some resolution on those two development points for Brennan, and I’m happy about that.
There’s a lot more to discuss, and I know you’re probably anxious to share your thoughts as well, so let’s get to it. Starting with…
THE CASE:
The Scene of the Crime: The episode begins with Booth’s nemesis, sniper Jacob Broadsky. He’s talking with a former co-armed forces soldier, and he asks him for his weapon. The younger man says he’ll consider it. Later in the episode, when Booth and Genevieve Shaw (played by Tina Majorino) show up to Broadsky’s place, they find the body of the soldier and an empty rifle case.
The Victim: Matt Lysinger is Broadsky’s first victim, but when Booth gets hot on Jacob’s trail, the rogue sniper takes another victim, Mr. Vincent Nigel-Murray.
Potential Suspects & Motives: There’s really only one suspect — Broadsky. But throughout the episode, his motives are questioned by Sweets and Booth and others. And honestly, I never quite figured out what his motive was, unless it was to torment Booth. Thoughts from you? Did I miss it this time?
The Lab Results: The team examined Lysinger’s remains while Booth grew antsy with his singular focus of bringing Broadsky down. Angela uses sound technology to help Booth trace Broadsky’s phone calls. And Hodgins studies Lysinger’s wallet for clues, finding evidence of an access keycard to help Booth understand where Broadsky might be. When Booth tracks Jacob down at a shipyard, Hodgins and Brennan alert him to the fact that Broadsky has a broken hand.
The Interrogation Room: Booth brings in Lysinger’s boss, who tells him that they didn’t use keycards. But the boss tells Booth that Lysinger would have been at the shipyard.
The Verdict: Booth and Broadsky track one another within the shipyard, each one laying low. But Booth stays lower, and gets Broadsky in his sights. He shoots him in the leg and brings him down, presumably after which Jacob is taken into custody and will stand trial.
MY Verdict: I think this is the best and most satisfying resolution we’ve ever had to a villainous arc on Bones. Epps, Gormogon, Gravedigger — all pretty good, but I really liked this episode and how it was done. Do you think it actually IS the resolution? Since Broadsky isn’t dead, is it possible he’ll resurface?

THE SQUINTS:
I don’t know about you, but all of Vincent Nigel-Murray’s facts in this episode were sort of bitter-sweet, right? Like the final class before graduation, or the way you remember a favorite grandparent or something. I loved every minute of him here, especially his enthusiasm for the dinosaur mechanical suit. And when he died, I cried. Not just because he’s my favorite squintern of all, not because I’m bummed he won’t be around for more facts, but because it was just such an honest moment of the end of life and the beginning of death. It was one of those moments where, though I haven’t actually experienced that personally, it “felt” true somehow, as if that is how it happens. I’m not describing it perfectly, so I’ll just say this — I loved it.
I loved it so much I’m even okay that it wasn’t Daisy who died. Boom!SquintRoasted! I’m sort of kidding, of course, but then again, Daisy was as good as dead to me when Genevieve and Sweets started talking. Please tell me I’m not the only one who sensed a little chemistry there, yeah? I need more of that, pronto! I also liked the Sweets and Booth dynamic in this one — still a little edgy, but in their way.
It was well-played to have Cam be the one to call VNM’s mother, and I smiled when she called him “such a sweet little weirdo.” Also interesting to me was Cam’s reaction to how Booth was handling the Broadsky situation. I wouldn’t mind seeing another Booth and Cam friendship moment soon.
Hodgins was awesome in his arm-wrestling match with VNM and the way it was a matter of life and death to duke it out. I liked that he was the one who started the tribute to Vincent at the end of the episode, sharing a random fact.
As for Angela, I’m not sure whether to be bummed that obviously she knows Brennan’s secret and we don’t or to just be thankful that she and Brennan apparently HAD a best friend conversation. I loved Angela’s pleased and satisfied smile at the end, when she saw Brennan tuck her hand into Booth’s arm. To that, I say, “Glug Glug, WOO HOO!”
Booth & Brennan:
Like I said at the beginning, the ep revolved around Booth and showcased his actions and reactions, but still, at the heart of the matter is always Brennan’s response and character growth. I liked the subtle way that Booth was edgy — his single focus at the lab, his insistence that Brennan stay at his apartment, and his pale face while Vincent Nigel Murray was dying. This episode relied on Booth staying strong and determined, so there wasn’t really an opportunity for him to seemingly break down and be encouraged. But the more I think about it, the more I think it did happen. Booth needs to be needed, and so when the team — and Brennan also — allowed him to do his thing, his way, it strengthened him. Do you agree?
As for Brennan, I liked that she considered Vincent’s words and actions toward her and her own past actions toward him. I also liked that she was the one to open Booth’s bedroom door. What’s your take on the fact that she had to ask Booth if it was okay for her to cry on his shoulder? Is it significant that she is the one making the “move” or approach toward Booth (both by literally, as Angela called it “crawling into his bed” and by putting her arm in his?
And…so…did they have sex? Does it matter if they did? I’m curious for your thoughts. Which “long, interested look” did you like better: The one before Booth closed his bedroom door, or the one at the end, when Brennan showed up with her plant?

I have to watch it again but wanted to ask–did you notice the clock in Booth’s room and its significance? I had to be told by someone, but now that I’ve seen it I’m wondering what your thoughts are on that?

I am still processing that death scene because I have to tell you, it wrecked me. I am going to miss Vincent hardcore. And props to Ryan Cartright for a fantastic final performance.

VNM was my favorite Squintern as well. And your right the scene in which he died was in it’s own way was perfect. The bedroom scene will be talked about for ages so I will skip that scene and say #TeamDid. This episode will definitely rank in my Top 5 all time favorites.

I loved Angela’s reaction to Brennan’s statement that she got in bed with Booth. I lost count of how many expressions Angela had on her face. Truly the reaction of anyone who’s been waiting…and hoping…and waiting to hear those words, and then not believing that she’s actually hearing them.
So sorry to see Mr. Nigel-Murray go. I loved his random facts and confessions.

Forgot my random fact: Sharks grow a new set of teeth every two weeks or so to replace worn teeth.
I hate to admi it, bu I honestly don’t really care if Booth & Bones did end up where everyone wants them to or not. I was so distirbed and angry to see VNM to go because he really was my favorite squintern. And while yeah I had an inkling that it would be him I was still holding onto hope that somehow Clark would just end up waling past him whe the shot got fired or something. And you’re right, hearing all his quirky side notes & facts was so bittersweet. His death (along with the amazing music chosen for it) was awesome. The way he spoke in a childish whisper at the end was a smidge heart crushing. Just thinking about it again now makes me angry that he was the one to go.
I guess the whole point will be if they did or didn’t next season. I mean are we honestly expected to believe that the writers will be kind and actually address what may or may not have happened? After all don’t the writers like to torture their fans over the hiatus, anyway? 🙂 That said I am very excited to see the season finale – mostly because I love it when they go undercover. It always allows for both of the two characters to shine in their roles.
And as a sidenote I hope they write ED;s pregnancy in. Only because I would love to see how a “Bones” pregnancy would evolve. Whether it would be with Booth or without him.
I loved the episode! It’s my new favorite. It had everything I love about Bones – a title that works on many levels, Brennan’s laughter, nerdy science, squinty shenanigans, Booth in the lab, raw emotion, true teamwork, edge-of-your-seat suspense, Booth with guns, Hodgela love, Angela rocking technology, Brennan being overly squinty, Hodgins translating, Brennan/Angela friendship, B&B shared looks and a shared connection for the ages.
I like that since Broadsky is still alive, his storyline can be reopened in the future. I think he’s a good villain for the show. I like how it’s kind of like Booth and his squint squad vs Broadsky.
I will totally ship Sweets and Genevieve with you. I liked Genevieve, and I have always liked Tina Majorino.

I got to tell you that I’m waiting more from this episode, I’m waiting so long to see B&B together. Whole expectation freaking me out and the preliminary of the next episode didn’t show a lot. I hope we haven’t waiting for the next season to see what going to happen.
Well, I thought it was a good action based episode but the Broadsky arc was never as gripping as the Howard Epps or Gravedigger arcs. And the resolution didn’t change my mind. I just don’t think I saw how Broadsky got under the team’s skin as much as Howard Epps did. I blame the writing, because instead of seeing the tension play out, the Broadsky arc had terrible moments of “telling”- Booth being insecure, Brennan reassuring him. So good episode, but the story arc wasn’t that great.
VNM was my favorite intern along with original flavor Clark. Killing him off after the making a joke out of his alcoholism the last time just seems to emphasize how messed up this season has been. I couldn’t get emotionally involved, just sad to think he’s not going to be around on the show.
After that bedroom scene, I’m going to go all crazy and guess that next week’s big twist will be that this season was all a dream. Otherwise, the shipper scene was really anti-climatic- whether they had sex or just held each other.
I’m really, really bummed over Vincent’s death. I knew it would be him – I’ve read every spoiler out there! But I was still unprepared for the emotional impact. It was very devastating. Kudos to Ryan Cartwright. His performance was just right. He really broke my heart – excuse me, crushed it, with his simple plea to be allowed to stay.
Honestly, I really don’t even care about the Booth and Brennan did they/didn’t they business. I don’t think I’ve been this depressed about a character death since Mark Greene on ER.
Why oh why couldn’t it have been Sweets?!
I should have mentioned this in my first comment. A while back, Ryan Cartwright tweeted a link to a list of common misconceptions. I thought this was very Mr. Nigel Murray of him. I still had the link in my email, as I had shared it with some friends. I think it’s only fitting that I share it here as well.

First thoughts: “Don’t make me go” and “You still have blood on your hands” are the two phrases that are going to haunt me for a while. Wow.
I loved the dinosaur nerding. That was amazing. I loved it (possibly because I used to dinosaur nerd like that).
Everything, overall, was wonderful. I’m… content.
As far as the did they/didn’t they… I don’t really care. Either way, the team is back to being a family again.
Did it make me laugh? Yes. Dinosaurs! Did it make me cry? Yes. I really did. Twice. Did it make me think? Yes, it did. Most importantly, I’m content. I couldn’t have wanted more, I couldn’t have wanted less.
Random facts (I have to do more than one, it’s something I shared 🙁 with Vincent): 1. There are 19 species of owls in the United States. Of those, 18 are “true” owls, or from the family “Strigidae”, and 1 is not “true”, but from the family “Tytonidae” (the Barn Owl, Tyto alba). 2. The Mongolian gerbil (you know, the one in pet stores) has a scientific name that means “sharp-clawed warrior.” 3. 15,000 vacuum cleaner-related accidents happen per year, and 100 people die from falling icicles every winter in Moscow.
I loved the episode.The whole clock thing really has me going. Who else realized that the clock in ‘End in the Beginning’ also said 4:47 when she climbed into his bed. Is this a possible thought into what really happened behind those closed doors?

Well, what an episode. Why did Booth insist on going to his apartment. It just didn’t seem wise since he was the one being hunted. I think for as long as we have been waiting they should grant us the confirmation of sex between booth and bones and allow the cliff hanger to be whether bones is pregnant. Satisfaction and wanting more at the same time.
I LOVED this episode!!! The writers did an AMAZING job. Bravo!
As for Bones and Booth doing the “deed”…I would say no, they didn’t do the “deed” because that would be too easy and obvious and we all know how Hart Hanson likes to trick us. Plus, do we seriously want the “deed”t to go down like that?? I don’t. It doesn’t seem like Bones and especially Booth to just have one night of sex after a crisis like VNM dying. I mean we didn’t even see them kiss for crying out loud! I think the last episode will maybe have Bones and Booth realize that it is time to change their relationship to something more or hint to it.
I think…4:47 was used because in the season finale of season 4 Brennan comes home and gets in bed with Booth….well I think the writers put the clock at 4:47 in this episode to signify that the relationship between Bones and Booth is changing yet again but this time they are moving closer to the way we want them…so they come full circle
Ehh… it was a fun episode, with the dinosaurs and the gun toting.
The actor did a great job in the death scene and I will miss having VNM come up in rotation. I hope Wendall’s not the permanent intern now. But I would rather have had the death tie into some payoff for changing all the interns this season.
But I think the mystery plot was stronger last week, and Broadsky never lived up to the hype. I don’t think Broadsky’s character was developed enough or Booth conflicted enough to get much satisfaction out of the whole Anti-Booth concept. In fact, the whole Broadsky arc failed in terms of character growth for Booth because instead of the exploring the complex morality and inner conflict that Booth was supposed to carry around for being a sniper, this arc sort of concluded and simplified the issue into good/bad.
I’m guessing BB didn’t have comfort sex, but the show will put them together next week. All their interactions are lackluster these days, and I don’t care if Brennan made the first move or that it seems Booth is still reluctant. If the show finally does put them together, I just hope the will they/won’t they nonsense is over. And we see the real tension and banter come back, especially with them challenging each other more on equal footing.
I am so sad to see VNM go. He was my favorite intern. His random facts always made me laugh cause they were so out there. As far as Booth and Brennan go.. I have wanted them together ever since I start watching last season but what with the death of VNM it kind of got lost in the dealing with that tragedy. It is a totally plausible way for them to end up starting a relationship. Many people look for human contact when dealing with death and yet again it was a case of Booth almost dying. I am thinking that they did end up having sex since the clock said 4:47am and that was the same time “Bren” came in and had sex with her husband in The End in the Beginning. Also Angela’s face in a couple of scenes almost scream “I can’t believe you finally has sex with him” I am glad to see that BFF interaction between Brennan and Angela again. I feel it has been missing this year. I like Genevieve and hope to see her next season. I think it would be good for Sweets to go for another girl besides Daisy.

When you die your hair still grows for a couple of months.
This episode ROCKED! Personally, I hope they didn’t have sex afterwords because I felt satisfied enough after their talk. When Brennan asked if she could cry on his shoulder, I was just happy that she was acting as a “normal” person. She wasn’t thinking as deeply about it all, she just let herself feel unsure and sad without trying to be assertive and strong. I liked the candidness of that situation. I think it brought them back to the basics of their relationship without the tension of the previous proposal and such. I like how they left it at that, with Booth as her protector of sorts, and somehow the idea that they had sex afterwords sort of breaks that for me, and it also feels really tacked on, so I hope they didn’t.
I loved the episode… much frustration and sadness, but you covered those points perfectly. I really liked the way it was resolved as well–Booth fighting through his demons. And I loved that Booth was needed by Brennan because when Hannah said no Booth needed Brennan, and it’s great to feel like they have that back-and-forth dynamic going again.
VNM. I’m pretty devastated. Just his last words and how Brennan said he was her favorite, because there was that one episode where he kept trying to impress her… I definitely teared up.
I don’t think they actually slept together… but SOMETHING happened and I’m so ready to find out.

Oh, my random fact:
Ellen Raskin, author of The Westing Game, was also a prolific illustrator who designed the cover of Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time. 🙂
While I loved the episode, they killed my favorite intern. I loved VNM, and the random facts accompanied by the british accent. I loved the episode, the emotions of Booth and Brennan felt real again and I’ve missed that. I also hope that Genieve comes back to replace Daisy. In all honesty I wished so badly that it was Daisy killed and not VNM.
Broadsky didn’t seem to create as much as an emotional connection with the characters. I’d say the biggest impact is a tie between Gormogon and The Gravedigger, but I did like that he wasn’t killed leaving a suspenseful return in the future. Their wrap of of the sniper arc was definitely the best part of the storyline. I’m kind of glad it’s over and done with though, which is sad cause with past killers, I couldn’t wait for episodes that returned to their subject. Another critique I have is that they made it obvious who was going to die, I didn’t like that, instead of being on the edge of my seat I just repeated “They’re going to kill VNM” cause I knew.
At first I didn’t know what to think about Booth and Bones finally connecting on that level (if they really did connect on that level) but the last scene with them arm in arm really made it seem like this is going to work. It didn’t seem forced anymore in this episode. I was really glad that Bones and Angela had a bff moment, they’ve been lacking this season. I loved Ange’s reaction and her yelling at Hodgins. And I would just like to say, on behalf of Angela and the rest of us, IT’S ABOUT DAMN TIME.
Sarah, stop being a coward. You wanted to see EVERYTHING from first real kiss to babies when B&B get together. So stop asking “whether it mattered” if they had sex tonight. You know we deserved to see something – at least a kiss – if they did, and it’s lame and more of the same to brush that over. So woman up and call HH out on it.

I agree with the majority of commenters in that VNM was my favorite squintern. I always got excited when it was his week, because his “funny quirk” was the only one that DIDN’T annoy me. As soon as I learned Sweets was in the finale I knew it would be VNM, so I had a little time to prepare, but that didn’t make it any less awful.
AND YES CAN THEY PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE HOOK-UP THE CHARACTERS OF TWO ACTORS WHO WERE ON AMAZING BUT CANCELLED SHOWS?!
PLEASE let there be flashbacks to the bedroom scene next week…

Good episode, but thought the conclusion of the sniper arc was anticlimatic. And also just confirmed all the criticism that’s been floating around here about not challenging Booth or having his character grow in complexity through the Broadsky arc and ramming Brenna’s humanization down our throats.
“if there was a god he wouldn’t have taken him” and the subsequent lecture on god – that line especially was so bad, I couldn’t get into the rest of the scene. Like the blizzard episode, I blame the lame dialog and writing.
What I did like were VNM’s death scene and that the episode managed to put some humor into the lab scenes, with Hodgins. Those are good moments. It made me feel for VNM all the more because he was so young and still could learn so much from Brennan and could have so much more fun at the lab….
I do think putting BB together would be just a way to salvage a bad season, but I don’t care. I just want the contrivances to stop, so that we can go back to seeing them as partners instead of wallowing in melodrama or caught in fanfiction-y burning of dates by candlelight and other nonsense.
My wish for next season: less preaching, more witty lines.
For Vincent: Coconut water is sterile. It can be used intravenously and was used in WWII when supplies ran short.
I KNEW this was coming. I knew for a while.
I still cried like a baby. He sounded so…little. So young. It was horrible. And something I read somewhere or other was right: That song will haunt me. I can’t stop listening to it, though.
You know, I don’t even CARE if they did the deed. Just don’t care. There was too much going on for me to care. Mostly the dread of what was coming, I was sniffling even while he and Brennan and Hodgins were being adorable over the T-rex. And actually…I’m going to have to watch the episode again to remember anything about it. It was too emotionally taxing. Even an incorrect rendition of the Lime and Coconut song couldn’t fix my brain there. Vincent in a casket being carted back off home with some pretty hydrangeas…to a song I’ve wanted sung on Bones for aaaages. I don’t know. It was sad. All of it was. My brain can’t even really process anything even if it did want Booth to riddle Broadsky with bullets. Damn morals.
For the record, I wasn’t particularly fond of the chick detective, and I’m GLAD it wasn’t Daisy. 😉 Then again, Vinny Vin Vincenzo (I always thought that was one nickname, ha) and I share a love of all facts, relevant to a situation or not. Daisy and I share lots more, not the least of which being gender!
@Meg, not to nitpick, but in the spirit of the Jeffersonian’s standards of verifiable truths, “China has more English speakers than the United States” is a non-verifiable, non-fact because “English speaker” is a vague and ill defined criteria. You might be able to say China has more people who can say “How are you.” But it did remind me of a VNM moment when one of the facts he spouted was about the number of chopstick existing in the world, another non-fact since it’s impossible to measure and the number would always be in a flux anyway. It stood out because I thought VNM should know better.
I know VNM’s quirk was played for laughs, but I love the Lab’s philosophy, truly a love for rational thinking and science, so I wanted to honor that by distinguishing the real facts from dubious ‘factoids.’ Really don’t mean to ruin the fun. 🙂
@Telia, I came to post something along those lines. I too was disappointed by the conversation about god before the BB cuddling. It was so banal and it represents the season’s blatant, repetitive and unnecessary message that Brennan can only become human by embracing what can’t be explained rationally. Which is fine. But at the conclusion of the sniper arc, we still haven’t seen Booth learn or acknowledge the value of rational thinking, so the brain and heart balance still seems off. I thought Broadsky had a lot of potential for bringing out growth in Booth’s character but didn’t see it.
Booth comforting Brennan is fine, but this was a chance to show how Brennan finds strength in her and VNM’s shared commitment to rational thinking. And for Booth to recognize it and balance it out with his belief in god, then go bring Broadsky to justice. I know the show changed directions into the whole ‘career woman needs to open her heart’ rom-com trope, but I noticed a lot of comments here previously that aren’t just about the romance, so thought I’d mention it.
Factoid: The British Museum reported that its 1972 “Treasures of Tutankhamun” recorded the largest number of visitors for a single exhibition, at 1,694,117 visitors. I can imagine VNM’s parents meeting there during their courtship, leading eventually to the birth of our beloved intern. Going to miss him.
Ok, truth time. Vincent was not my favorite squintern. That title still belongs to Wendell, or occasionally Clark. I always considered Vincent a little annoying, truth be told…but when it happened, even though I knew it was going to happen, even though I was relieved when it wasn’t Wendell or Clark or Sweets, god, that “I don’t want to leave” bit completely ripped my heart open. And I got a sense of what the Jeffersonian meant to him. I never thought about it, but he left his country, his family, to come to America to work for the Jeffersonian…that bit, just that “I love it here” bit, mad mad mad props to Ryan Cartwright for that.
Also, good job building up to that moment, picturizing where everyone was, and even though I knew it was going to be Vincent, it was just that “Could it be?” segment that made the adrenaline rush. And Booth, saying “It’s ok, we’re ok” after knocking Vincent to the floor, and giving me that one moment where I was like, “Oh, thank god, it’s all right” only to see the blood – that was just cruel. But clever, I can see that.
Also, I love how the ‘bed’ scene turned out. It was…everything I hoped it would be, honestly. Raw, real Brennan letting her guard down only to Booth in the privacy of his apartment, and him knowing exactly what to say to make her feel better. I don’t think they slept together. I don’t have a specific reason for it, just a sort of feeling that both of them would still be too grief-stricken by the murder to really feel like it…I don’t know. Although the smile between Bones and Angela was just bursting with something good – maybe it’s something more along the lines of they finally said “I love you”? or something? I really don’t want them to have slept together, honestly. I feel like doing so without getting their feelings cleared up first is just inviting another complication. Next thing we know, Booth’s taken the place of the deep-sea welder, and Bones is looking for another botanist or something. I wouldn’t put it past SN and HH, but that would just be too awful, they can’t do something like that.
I like the fact that you brought up how Brennan developed, and yeah, I agree that it was a good idea to sort of assess where she stood with her squints, especially since in the beginning, she was all cold to all of them, since they weren’t Zack. I thought it was surprising that she called Vincent her favorite, though – I distinctly remember that her first impression of him wasn’t that good, in the He in the She. And she was sort of mad at him in Dentist in the Ditch. So I didn’t really know what to think about that, even though it sounded sincere enough. And Booth smiling at Vincent, laughing at the dinosaur, helping him up and all that – I’m not sure I liked it. Booth’s never really shown his liking for a squint that blatantly, not even with Hodgins, whom he’s closest to, or even Wendell, despite the hockey team thing. Usually he’s a little more terse and brusque – that’s not to say he didn’t like Vincent, but I don’t know if he would naturally have shown it that obviously. Those little smiles seemed out of character, but other than that, Booth was awesome tonight.
We’ve had two great episodes in a row, so obviously that gets me really excited for the finale. I haven’t ever been that impressed with a Bones season finale (or premiere) before, but I guess there’s always a first time. Can’t wait for next week. GO BONES!

I don’t think they did. I think things have changed, improved, shifted somehow. There was something, but I don’t think it was sex.
I loved the whole episode and I cried a few times. Mad props to Ryan Cartwright and Emily Deschanel in the death scene. They both nailed it. Emily Deschanel was also amazing in the bedroom scene. That girl has some serious chops.
The look at the end was the best. Haven’t seen that in a long time. And Angela? I think she’s just happy for her best friend. Not because she had sex with the man she loves, but because she and the man she loves are back on track and further on that track than ever before. Who wouldn’t be thrilled for their BFF about that?

AWWW. This is SO sweet. VNM was my favorite, and I was really sorry to see him leave the show. At least the death scene was well done.
I don’t care either way, but money’s on BB not doing to deed, because of the tepid, anti-climatic feel of the scene. Also, I hope they didn’t because it would mean comfort sex and using VNM’s death to further the BB will they/won’t they plot, which this season has become the most ridiculous part of their relationship. (Rom-com cliche indeed. I lost all hope after that burning the dates scene. We’re gonna see Brennan writing in her diary next season at this rate.)
I suppose you could call it a “catalyst,” but VNM”s death feels more like a plot device if they had sex. And I can’t believe even the love starved shippers want the first time to be comfort sex.

VNM was my favorite because I thought he was the best match for the Jeffersonian and Brennan. I hope Bones meant it about him being her favorite too.
I don’t think BB did it. HH has been pretty confident and boastful about the plan for putting BB together being original. Something he’d never seen or heard about. And the whole scenario this episode- Booth wants Bones to stay at his place because a case puts them in danger, they end up in the same bed, scared for each other’s lives- is such a widespread scenario in fandom. Also, as many have noted, it’s too anti-climatic for it to be the real thing.
Urgh. I just want them to get the BB romance out of the way. It’s become a monster that has swallowed the rest of the show, and this season sucked because of all the wasted effort and contrivances to tear them apart.
In terms of the mystery, Broadsky was ok, but not in the league with Howard Epps or the Gravedigger. He doesn’t even register as strongly as some of the one shot mysteries. Agree with some of the comments that the show should have used the sniper arc to show some growth and much needed self reflection on Booth’s part. Also agree the arc fell flat because Broadsky didn’t connect to the characters the way previous serial killers did.
this episode was intense, and i must admit, whether they hooked up or not, i dont really care at this point, cause they had some progression of their relationship…
I personally dont think they did sleep together, i think he just comforted her.
As for VNM death scene, i blubbed like a girl, it was one of the more honest death scenes ive seen in a show, and it felt real and all the more heart crushing because of it…

this was a really good episodes,to me the bed scene was not about sex,but her needing him to hold her,brennan was the one who open the bedroom door.
Best episode this season and maybe even of the series. I laughed then I cried so hard I had to pause it. I kind of knew it was going to be VNM, but it still crushed my heart to see it happen. So much stuff packed into one episode it’s making my heart hurt and I can hardly form a coherant sentence about it.
No I don’t think they had sex, but I think they both know there’s a line crossed now and they are technically together, we’re just not seeing it yet. I don’t think I could have coped with seeing any actual interaction between them last night, not even a kiss. The comforting was just perfect. I think Brennan confessed to Angela that she was happy to be in his bed and it felt right and now Angela is thrilled that Brennan finally caught up to her own reality.
So many things made me talk to my screen like a mad woman. The clock time, Booth in the lab, Booth looking hot with the big gun, Sweet’s singing finally, the list goes on.
I know it’s just tv, but I feel all wrung out with emotion now. That’s a definite sign of an episode well done.
Random VMN fact: Hair and nails don’t carry on growing after you die. The skin shrinks due to lack of water and gives the impression of growth. Also, while you can run in zig zags to escape a crocodile, running in a straight line quickly and keeping going has the same effect cos the croc can’t go as fast as you might think.

The scene looked more like a daughter seeking her father’s comfort. And of course the father full of wisdom, sure of his belief in God and how it works, and the daughter doubting its existence just because bad things happen. Seriously? Is that Brennan’s logic behind her atheism???

And the resolution of the sniper arc. Both are sure they are right, but of course Booth is the right one without a doubt… That coupled with Brennan wondering what kind of person she is, just like in the S4 finale with her speech about leading a different life, I don’t like the sound of it..
I thought it was a beautiful, heart wrenching episode. I thought it was probably going to be VNM …but the whole episode I was thinking, please don’t be Sweets, please don’t be Sweets! Especially when they discovered Matt’s body and you know Brodsky was watching…my heart was in my throat! But still, to lose the charming Mister Nigel-Murray…ouch 🙁
One of my favorite moments was Cam telling Angela about calling VNM’s mom – it was so real to me – that moment of cutting through all the mystery and knowing that his mom just wants her son’s body to come home. SO incredibly sad, and I thought Cam did it beautifully.
Booth was incredible this episode – I think I stopped breathing when he said “You are staying at my place tonight” (though I have no idea why he wouldn’t go to Brennan’s…instead of just closing the blinds…!). It was beyond sexy, even in that context. And I think everything in Booth’s apartment with Bones was perfect – the awkward getting ready for bed, and Brennan making it through most of the night before going to Booth. I loved that they both looked exhausted and imperfect, and their conversation felt so real to me – sort of disjointed and confusing. And I am sure they did not have sex. It would be cheating to use VNM’s death that way. I think Brennan was smiling with Angela because they shared a hugely intimate momement, emotionally speaking. And for them, that is way bigger than sex.
Ok while this episode was one of my favorites I think what they portrayed as happening didn’t really happen. Some part of me really believes that with Emily being pregnant for next season that they played on the idea it could be booths but in reality when I took in the episode it made sense to me that the father could in fact be Nigel! They were working closely on the dinosaurs, when bones went into booths room she said it was because of Nigel, and she brought the potted plant at the end. I know it’s probably silly to think but I also read somewhere where Emily stated it’s Not what people think so please let me know what you all think!!
Great show! Great writing as always. It was sad to see Vincent get killed. He made an impact on all. It would be nice if Angela and Hodges has a boy and names it after him. I have watched all these characters grow from the very first show. It’s even nice to go back an watch them over to catch details. Brennan has grown the most. By working with Booth she has gotten in touch with her feelings and with others. Angela has been a true friend. I do hope that Booth and Brennan do get together before the show ever ends and with kids. To me they could be the next Hart to Hart. They make the perfect couple because the strengthen each other. They went through the process of co-workers, friends and hopefully lovers and mates for life.

I thought this was a really fantastic episode – solid on all counts. The bedroom scene between B&B was perfect (if I had to guess, I would say that the clock and the looks Angela and Brennan kept exchanging throughout the rest of the episode are pretty damning evidence that SOMETHING happened between B&B) and while I hated to see VNM go (he was arguably my favorite squintern), Ryan Cartwright’s performance in that scene was simply amazing.
I thought there was a lot of depth to this episode, and it’s definitely given me a lot to think about over the next week.
In terms of Broadsky’s motive – I think it was pretty clearly established that he believed that he was on the “good side” and Booth was on the “bad side”…and therefore Booth needed to die (this was established in The Killer in the Crosshairs after the girl who had been helping Broadsky committed suicide). I think Broadsky murdered Leisinger for one of two reasons: either he wanted/needed the rifle and the access card and Leisinger wouldn’t give them up or he intended to kill Leisinger all along in order to set up Booth’s murder. He knew Booth would find Leisinger (the camera at the murder scene wasn’t so he could kill Booth there, it was so he would know when Booth found the body) and take the body to the lab. Quite simply, Leisinger was collateral damage – he had to die so that Booth would be in the lab and Broadsky could take the shot from the top of the crane. That’s just my $.02.

I was dissappointed. Shouldn´t be suprised by that anymore. I guess i was caught up by the hype of these two last episodes supposedly going to change how the whole show is going.
The only positive change i felt was Angela and Brennans talk. It was a long time ago since we saw them as friends like this.
Broadskys case was ok, nothing spectacular and Vince death was well done.
I can´t see that B&B would have had sex, that would feel sooo wrong. They need to clear the air first and when will we get to see Booth showing any feelings this season. I can´t see that Booth has any feelings for her at all not even as a close friend. It felt a bit strange when he just told her to come to stay at his apartment. As others have said i too wondered why ? if Broadsky is after Booth ??
To bad i did have hope for this season to get some well needed changes in these two last episodes.
This one was nothing close to last weeks, imo that was the only one standing out in this awful season.

So I wasn’t the only one to notice how the three 22’s were tied together! The alarm clock in episode 22 in season 4 was 4:47. In episode 22 of last season, the alarm clock read 4:47 in the horder’s room. In this 22, it was 4:47 when she walks in and conveniently we allude to 4×22 with how she ended up in bed with him and in the end she said she was pregnent. By the way, I am thinking that is the way the Hart went with this one. We will see a pregnant Bones because it is easier to write in the pregnancy than to hide it.
While story-wise it wasn’t most thrilling closure of villain arc (it felt underdeveloped a bit, but final chase in shipyard was kinda nerve wrecking), it went on such high note emotionally. Death of Vincent, everyone’s grief…it felt so real. Actual death of VNM, while perfectly shot and acted, was very hard to watch and I really doubt that I will want to see it ever again (in a case if you don’t want to feel floored for several hours after that). While Vincent wasn’t favorite squintern too, he was funny and more likable each time I saw him. British accent, factoids, timing… he will be missed. It is interesting that producers gave Ryan to perform so memorable on-screen death, his acting was a perfect. Good (and yet very emotionally painful for viewers) way to say goodbye to the show.
About BB…I actually start to like what they are doing here with them. No, I don’t think they had sex. At least their body language and attitude to each other didn’t give that impression (and I guess writers wouldn’t miss that). I think what happened was waaaay more intimate and personal. Like a true love kiss and hug. And I guess we will find out it in next episode and beginning of the next season. Also “crying on the shoulder” scene was just so emotionally packed with the punch. Grief felt so real, need for the comfort too. Most of us – heck I will say everyone – has been down there, when all you need is words “everything will be alright” and a hug.
Anyway, seems like we are heading for great finish of not so perfect season. While it had it’s weaknesses, it came out mostly right in the end. Let’s hope it keeps movin forward.

Otherwise, Booth has become a cold, impatient ‘that guy’ still rolling his eyes at her or ignoring her and Brennan has become a sad, needy, clingy nerd girl. Did no one notice that Brennan practically had to BEG Booth to console her over the death of her Mr. Nigle-Murray? That he didn’t even reach out a comforting hand when she was crying her eyes out over VNM, and, in fact, SHE was the one to comfort HIM over the death of someone who, by his own admission, he hardly knew? That she took HIS arm, that SHE went to HIS bed? That Booth seemed to passively tolerate Brennan and apparently pity-f**ked her?
Why are people happy about this? Why are expectations so low? WHERE IS THE LOVE we used to adore?

I personally loved this episode. It was just…everything. Even though I knew from the moment he arrived in The Royal Diner that VNM would be the one to go it was still just shocking watching him die. Booth and Brennan were fantastic. Loved the Angela and Brennan moment. It was all just so amazing. Wonderfully written, acted and directed. I noticed the 4:47 too. I was like, “the clock, 4:47” I think I repeated it a couple times.
That’s all I really got for now. I haven’t completely finished processing the episode. Thanks for your review Sarah it was wonderful.

I was dissapointed by this episode since last weeks was a really good one. The only one imo this season. I guess i still had hope that things were going to change, That we were going to get some explanations of all this crap. Hart keeps saying he has it all planned out, that they have been working at something this whole season. Well it´s only one episode left now so that got to be something spectacular as there´s been nothing so far.
Bones has to stop messing with my head. This show has broken my heart too many times. I am going to miss Vincent spitting out random facts. I think the scene where he died was heartbreaking, and Brennan telling him that he was her favorite was even more heartbreaking. I loved the end to the sniper arc and I wonder if we will see a definite conclusion to it just like the gravedigger case.
I was surprised to see Booth & Brennan end up at his place, only because Broadsky knows where Booth lives and it didn’t occur to them that maybe he would show up there. But I can also see why Booth wanted Brennan to stay with him, the running theme I have got is if you want to hurt Booth, you get to Brennan.
I was so mad at Hodgins for interrupting Brennan & Angela’s conversation. I was screaming along with Angela for Hodgins to leave. I was upset we didn’t get to see the rest of the conversation. But the smile on Brennan’s face & the look on Angela’s face at the end of the episode was telling. Do I think they had sex, no. I don’t think Booth would feel comfortable enough to take such a huge step after losing someone so close to them. A declaration, maybe. Whatever it is, its a step towards the right direction.

Perhaps if people just watched the show for what it is, instead of obsessing over how they want it to be, they might not be so bitter.

I love the episodes which don’t focus on their relationship and this one for the most part did not (like last weeks). I loved, loved that Angela was there for Brennan again and both she and Jack defended her in their own way.
Sweets analyzing Brennan again at the end was annoying and I am glad Jack stepped in. Don’t know where Cam’s sarcasm about the potted plant came in but I am glad that Angela told Brennan it was the right thing.
Here’s hoping for a much better season 7. These last two have been good.
I am thinking next weeks will be good but not as good, because of all the humor they will throw in.

Like others I knew VNM was the victim but I still cried like a baby. I really enjoyed this episode & I am one who thinks yes they did but hey i’ve been wrong many, many, many times before.
I loved the girl talk scene when Angela yells at Hodgins to go away. For a sad episode I laughed quite a bit as well. Oh & VNM in his dino getup – hilarious.

Where to start, I did love the episode! It had everything a good Bones episode should have, and the return of B&B sharing those looks, oh!!
I am satisfied with the way the sniper arc ended, if it is truly over(??)!! I don’t think it was the same depth as Epps or the Gravedigger, there was an err of uncertaintly with them, but with Brodskey, you knew how he was going after in this episode – Booth. But I am glad that there is enough evidence (I think) to put Brodskey away for a long time! I think he wanted to kill Booth because Booth had something to do with his girlfriend killing herself. Which obviously wasn’t true, she killed herself because Booth showed her was Jacob had done to innocent people.
I like the look Booth gave Brennan at the diner in the first few minutes, after he got the call that some one spotted Jacob… did anyone else notice that look??
Vincent’s death was amazingly well done. I liked how Brennan immediately tried to make Booth feel ok, that he was brave and did everything he could. I know some people focus on how Booth is always comforting Brennan but right there, in that moment, you saw her just know that he needed reassurance, to know it wasn’t his fault because she knows he would blame himself.
I loved that Brennan didn’t agrue when Booth said she was staying with him! I mean, previously, she would have argued that Brodskey wasn’t after her, he was after Booth, so why does she need to stay with him? But she didn’t and that means something!! I also agree with you that it meant something that she opened the door, that she went to Booth. I am super curious as to what happened next and totally mad they didn’t let us see the rest of Angela and Brennan’s conversation, but at the same time, I dont’ think anything else happened. Maybe they fell asleep and woke up together, but I don’t think they slept together.
I am looking forward to next weeks episode, not as much as this weeks but I think it will be a good episode, I love when they go undercover!!
Fact in honor of VNM, did you know that Return of the Jedi was supposed to be called Revenge of the Jedi, but Lucas changed it becasue Jedi’s don’t get revenge?? (Yeah, I am a geek!!)
Great episode by season 6 standards. Action packed goodness but not as strong in terms of mystery or thrilling as the previous big killer arcs. Didn’t do much for Booth’s character except letting the actor run around with guns and look cool. I still don’t think he’s recovered that savy or mojo he had to counteract the more intellectual Brennan. (You know, back when both Booth and Bones had both heart and brain. And before Sweets took over Booth’s expertise.) If you glance at non-shipper sites, the whole Broadsky arc, the story and the character, have so many wholes, it’s swiss cheese.
The romance is really cooling down. Devotees can defend it as “mature” or “organic” all they want, but I don’t see the sparkling chemistry anymore. If ratings fall next season, it will be a case of self fulfilling Moonlighting Curse because they let the rest of the show decline while teasing out the UST.
I hope the writers spend the summer coming up with some good mysteries. And even though this episode and the last one had a semi-human Bones, I hope the writers review seasons 1~3 for character integrity.

Loved it!!! Brennan showed the last of her imperviousness falling away! It was so important to have Brennan make the moves…Booth has been burned too many times. He wouldnt have risked pushing her again and essentially the ball was in her court. Its in this one area where BOOTH has to be allowed to feel safe – not the physical safety he provides the group, but emotional safety. Only Brennan could have given that to him by reaching for Booth and showing she trusts him enough to open up. Cannot wait for next week!

@sunny My money is on that bet! That this is just been a weird coma dream, and it’s going to end in next weeks episode. That’s the mindblowing bombshell. And just because I know that HH and the writers like to “do surprising season enders” that my dream scenariou could become true. That would be the first, and only good thing (writing and storytelling wise, not the acting or other parts — those are still great) ever since the season 4 finale. And there are many similarities between that episode, and the next one. 😉
No, I would not have liked if B&B had “done it” in the last episode. But I don’t think they did. But taking account the way they have written the characters, and the storyline recently, it fits perfecly with the way they have chosen to write it, so in case they do decide to write in Emily’s pregnancy, I get why they needed a scene like that.
The Brennan-Angela girl-talk did kind of remind the earlier seasons, and had many similarities to the season 2 talk they had when Brennan revealed that she found out something about cops and nicknames. But I am a firm believer in the fact that this recent conversation was supposed to make viewers believe in the possibility of something happening that did not happen.
I may take out the fun in watching a tv series, but I prefer my tv to be about quality, and I over analyze things, not just watch and enjoy the current moment. But those who are okay with just watching something on tv and are happy about it, should not take this comment personally.

I’m obviously in the minority, but this episode really fell flat for me. The sniper arch never really lived up to the hype. And the conclusion felt two-dimensional and simplistic to me.
VNM was one of my favorite squints, I’m going to miss him. I was struck that during his death Booth and Brennan almost seemed to be alone with their reactions. Where’s the love? Where’s the compassion between these two for the shared experience? Sorry, just wasn’t feeling it.
Booth and Brennan, did they or did they not? Unfortunately, at this point it’s just a matter of curiosity for me. The spark is gone for me there, no heat, no passion, and so, no anticipation.
Maybe my expectations were too high after lasts week episode, which is about the only one I’ve really enjoyed this season. But the hype was for naught, and my expectations for the finale are pretty low. Just get it over with and hope they can come back with something next season.

What do you mean “alone in their reactions”? First of all, they were both in shock. Secondly, didn’t you see how Brennan reached out and told Booth it wasn’t his fault that he couldn’t save Vincent? How is that “alone”?
@delph, I only know of the sub forum on TwoP. It’s no longer very active, but the observations and reactions are not shipper based. And too bad EW got rid of Bones recaps because that was also non shipper based. There’s also a very informative Bones fan and forensic anthropology blog called Bones Girl.
Yeah, the main criticisms at TwoP are 1) inconsistent Brennan (with the pod version taking over more and more) and 2) bad cases + crappy writing. People were also pissed off at dumbed down Booth in season 4 and 5, but more resigned now and seem to attribute it to DB’s involvement.
I don’t remember all plot problems since the Broadsky arc began, but one that did leap out at me too when I was watching was Booth’s insistence on Brennan staying over at his place for safety. Instead of freaking out about Bones spending the night at Booth’s, the main question was about it not making good sense. Wouldn’t a FBI safehouse or hotel be safer? What about the rest of the team’s safety? If Booth is supposed to the kind of guy he is, they could easily have added a filler line about taking care of the rest of the team’s safety.
I think this show is in the same boat as House. It’s just old and has lost its magic and the characters are caricatures of the original forms. Both shows compounded their inevitable decline by upping the romantic melodrama while sacrificing characterization and weekly cases. Like someone said above, the Moonlighting Curse is a self fulfilling prophesy.

They just seemed so disconnected to me. And Brennan comforting Booth, isn’t he suppose to the “heart”? Brennan’s comforting Booth seemed to have to do with alleviating Booth guilt and responsibility, which I understand. The placement of that comfort just seems wrong to me. That’s seems to me to be a conversation for later. Not when you’re standing over the body. Where’s Booth’s concern for Brennan? Maybe you’re right and it was just shock. I certainly expected more of “something” but the whole time I was watching it, my thoughts were “this is kinda weird”, totally pulled me out of the emotion that I should have been feeling.

(I’m not trying to bash, or complain, I am only trying to answer you as well as I can)
Because of everything that so many viewers (who have not liked the direction of the show lately) have already said. You can just read older comments everywhere.
I actually liked the show in the beginning, thinking that even though in real life the believers (presented in the show by mainly Booth, but also a bit by Angela) dictate how it’s done, this show seemed to show that the scientists can be the ones who get “to be right”. I got it all wrong. The first saesons were just to lay the groundwork, introduce the characters, and to show the two different viewpoints. After that it turned a copy of how “belief makes science her bitch”. It became about how no human being can be whole, and happy, and live a full life, if they were rational, and that leading ones life like Brennan (or other scientist) were, has to be unsatisfactory, and miserable. That is what I have seen these past seasons. I do not see what I’m supposed to see. No matter what their intentions were, I, as a viewer, saw something different.
Is character growth only equal to accepting that one has to believe, and live the way they are showing? In that case I must be non-human. I have seen no character growth. No real growth. (I would like to say that as many have said, they need to show Booth’s character growth, his backstory, and his reasons…soon. It’s overdue, but they better do that) It’s been great seeing another side of Brennan’s character. Most seem to say how she has changed, but she’s always been like that, she’s just showing that side of herself to the otehrs now. I don’t call that character growth.
I’ve just seen bits and pieces of this and that, but if I watch a TV series that is mainly about the characters, and they make it mostly about them, then I actually expect the past and the present to be in synch with the present. To me this show has not done that. Lack of continuity. Things don’t add up.
What is so great about comfort sex as a storyline? Do you honestly think that BB were ready to take this step after all the events of the past few season? Honestly? Or are you just a fan who is tired of waiting, and want them together, no matter what? I am not one of those fans, I was expecting a better story that will lead top them getting together. I apologise, but the way their great lovestory has been done, makes me feel sorry for the characters/people. For me BB are an example of a ridiculous tv-lovestory. If this is a great relationship, and great love, then I know nothing about love [that’s probably true]. They never talk, they avoid everything important, they don’t deal with their problems, and Booth has acted like a hurt love-puppy and the typical man, who can’t be a whole being without a woman, a companion, someone to come to after work. Men have problems with my feminist wievs, I know, but I will never understand the typical man, who needs this kind of security to feel like a man. [Yes, I am admitting I do not understand men] And this is exactly how his character has been written, and I do not like it.
IF they decide to tell a story that BB actually “did it” in this episode, then does HH really think that is less unoriginal and more surprising, and better than any other of the options how they could have done the storylines they did? Trutfully there is nothing the writers could have done that would have made up the total lack of goodness in the last seasons, but especially last season, that I would have found acceptable. So it doesn’t really matter.
About HH, and his pal Shore. I love both the leads. Emily Deschanel and Hugh Laurie. But I stopped watching House when they split up the team. Same happened when Bones did the same to their team. I’m just a part of the audience who doesn’t like that kind of storytelling. No matter how brilliant the acting, and everything else is. You make a decision like that (as a showrunner), and I make a decision like this as a viewer. The magic is gone!
You must feel bad now for asking. But I decided to answer anyway. And I will not say another word, because I’m sure I’m gonna be hollered at for what I wrote more than HH ever has been.

I absolutely loved so much about this episode. I hardly know where to begin. I cried like a baby as Vincent lay there saying “Please don’t make me leave, It’s lovely here”…. On a storyline level it was clear that this place had become his home, and that he knew he was loved… from an Actors pov it was almost as if Ryan Cartwright was saying to the fans how much he enjoyed being on the show and that he was so sad to go…even given that he was moving on to successful ventures. The dichotomy of emotion in that scene between reality and character really pulled at my emotions. I didn’t expect that, and it really touched me deeply. The fact that Brennan wanted so desperately to let him know that she cared about him… and then scolded Booth for letting go only to realize he was gone…and then switching suddenly back into hyperrationalization to quickly try to comfort Booth… but Booth has changed as well…He’s more sure of himself. He knew it wasn’t his fault.. it was the fault of the one who pulled the trigger. Brennan could then let her emotions back in. She didn’t have to hide her emotions to protect Booth. She could let him be her support.
I felt absolutely one way about the bedroom scene last night and this morning until I read all of your comments, and now I’m so mixed in my feelings… …And in a way, I think that this is exactly what HH and Co wanted us to feel. Whether they “have sex” or not.. they have LOVE! They have HOPE… They have EACHOTHER. I appreciate this so much.
I was absolutely sure that they did have sex…the looks, the calm understanding between them…it felt like “afterglow”… yet I suppose that same feeling of contentment and calm could be the result of just letting your hesitance and uncertainty go.. of knowing in your heart that you’re both in exactly the same place at the same time…ready and open to love. Perhaps that is what transpired between them… either way, the result is the same. B&B are in their place of calm, content connection. Two people become one!
There are places where much arguing and foot stomping is focused on who’s to blame for them not being together…on who hurt whom… on who was rude or who needs to apologize. But I always felt that while neither was to “blame” they each had their own demons and reasons for their actions. I Believe Booth was always open with his heart, with his faith and he knew from the start that this woman was going to be the one he couldn’t walk away from, that should she ask, he would be there with arms wide open… but he also had real concerns. They’re so different, she could hurt me terribly because she doesn’t believe in love or committment… she doesnt’ believe in God, she makes more money than me, she’s smarter than me… so he drew a line… Brennan on the other hand was always afraid of the strong desire she felt toward Booth because that kind of desire felt different than the recreational sex kind of desire she had felt for others. She ran from those feelings…because they threatened her imperviousness. We’ve seen them each work around and through those concerns, until they have both grown into more whole people who can stand alone, yet would rather stand together. Booth learned that he can’t push her, he’s got to let her come to him…he learned that even a woman who seemed , on paper, to be perfect, could still hurt him, could still disappoint him, and most of all, couldn’t hold a candle to the love he feels for Bones. Brennan learned that while she may not believe in Booth’s belief system, she believes in Booth. And that’s enough. And that if she wants to take a chance on him, she’s got to ask him. And she learned that Booth is strong. He doesn’t need to be protected from pain…he can take it. That the pain that she might cause him by failing at loving him, is no worse than the pain he can feel by her not taking a chance on loving him. And that same pain hurt her whether she takes that chance or not.
When she came to his room… he was still very guarded and hesitent..but when she said “what kind of person am I” he knew the answer… The kind of person I’m going to love for the rest of my life!… When she questioned why God would take him, she accepted that some things just can’t be explained, and call it whatever you want, we all believe in something greater than ourselves …I think it was important for her to come to him, to let her set the pace, because I knows that last time he asked he pushed her into a scary place for her. When she asked him to comfort her, he said “Of course, that’s what I’m here for, I’m here, it’s hard, I know”… I think he inately realized in that moment that the last of her imperviousness had gone, that she was letting all of the pain in, all of the feelings in and turning to him for comfort…and that she was finally truly wide open to accept his love. What happens after that is completely debatable, and yet… does it really matter? for me, I think I’ve realized…It’ doesn’t. We will see more I’m sure… and we will come to understand more…but for now..for me… it’s enough!
From a purely “viewer” point of view..how exciting it is to have this question out there… to be looking at the two of them with brand new eyes…searching their faces and body language for any sign that yes they did, or not they didn’t… It’s exciting and suspensful..and keep the tension amped up to the highest level..and I love that for the show. I’m not entirely convinced that they will answer this question before the end of the Finale… I think that they will leave us to wonder for a while… Whatever happened happened, and it will show itself in time…It’s so great to be this excited again.
Oh … random fact… all Animals in the Kingdom Animalia have the same bones, they are just evolved and adapted into different sizes and shapes for different purposes! Fish, Frogs, Dogs, Humans… have Femurs, Scapulas, Humurous…etc.
@S I agree. I think too that I was fooled by the balance in S1 between them (BB, brain & heart) when it was probably just a way to show their differences, for them then to change Brennan. Didn’t she say at the end of woman in the limbo: To what we are becoming.
Either it was their goal from the start to change her, or they noticed that it was what the audience wanted, and from there they decided to make a fairy tale. Prince Booth saving damsel in distress Brennan form her lab, rationality, science… I can’t believe I used to think they wouldn’t go there for once in a show, that they would be original, and have 2 strong characters. Not the cliché weak woman and strong man…
I liked that Brennan was different and had a different view on the world that made her have different needs, like she didn’t need to talk to a headstone or bring flowers, or get overly hurt over someone’s death because it is a fact, and she accepted facts, there was no use being hurt. But we all now that has changed unfortunately, like a lot of other thing about her.
I don’t want her to become like most people, and have the same needs, and reactions. Especially since Booth weirdly is allowed to mostly NOT react, and act like people reproach Brennan to act, for the heart guy he is not that open, I think even less than supposedly robot Brennan, but he is allowed to be like that, it doesn’t make him an impervious robot like Brennan, no it makes him a strong hero *sigh*
Excellent. Very well written, beautifully directed, and great acting. You got to hand it to HH and the other EP, they did good.
For me, the best part was seeing Booth confident and focused and so damn brave. I think the newbee/green FBI gal was an excellent addition because it allowed Booth to be the alpha he so loves to be. And Booth is a great Alpha, and a great teacher. He is an amazing FBI Agent. It was a nice change to have the wirters point out how exceptional he is for a change.
I thought I would be disappointed with the bedroom scene, but I loved it. It was very intimate and loving. Booth is so kind to Brennan and he is so intuitive of her feelings. He knew she would crash because he has so much more experience with the death of a meaningful person in your life. She is truly lucky to have him in her life. And I think she has come to realize that. Now she needs to share her realization with Booth. Hopefully this will happen next week.
I have to say I yelled at the TV “I’M NOT OK WITH THIS, THIS MAKES ME VERY UPSET” When I saw Vincent start bleeding. He was my favorite Squintern.
Besides that I hope that Booth and Brennen didn’t seal the deal partly because its been built up so much and everyone has been waiting for it that this episode was kind of anti-climatic. Also partly due to the fact that as sweet as it was that Bones opened up Booth doesn’t strike me to be the type of guy that takes advantage of a person in a vulnerable state. If they did finally have sex and the show doesn’t at least show that passion I’m going to be so angry I won’t ever watch the show again lol.

I don’t want Booth and Brennan to have had sexual intercourse. (I couldn’t figure out with euphemism to use; and decide to the Brennan thing and say the exact term.) It didn’t seem like they did and it just didn’t seem right.They may have to write in ED’s pregnancy, but I am unsure I want them to. I don’t like the way they handled Angela’s pregnancy, where they both look dumb. If we could have pregnancy without the dumb stuff…

That is precicely why I wrote in my comments that IF they decide to write in Emily’s pregnancy, and IF they decide to write that BB “did it”, then I would not like it one bit. But until it is confirmed, I took it just as a comforting scene that gives the writers time do go eitehr way until a decision has been made how to go on, and to write in Emily’s pregnancy or not. I’m just really surprised that a lot of the fandom seems to believe they did the deed, based on solely a hug, and a few smirks, and hand holding. The classic signs of closeness, too “in your face” for me. I tend to believe that then it’s the opposite.
Sorry if this wasn’t clear from my previous comments. I thought I was clear with that. And what I mean is that my problem with the writing has nothing to do with did they or didn’t they, there are far more important things they should be addressing if this were a show I’d like watching. Clearly it is not. But they must be doing something right, because the Nielsen numbers say that people watch this show.
Brodsky thought he killed Booth. He wasn’t after him anymore. So they went to Booth’s so she wouldn’t be alone. Makes sense to me.
i dont think the “deed” was done last night. It would be ungentlemanly of booth to take advantage of a grieving Bones. JMHO. Anyway, onwards and upwards to a proper mushy love you scene please!
I think this episode did bring Bones and Booth together and I’m thrilled with how the writers did it.
First, if all that happened was a little comforting cuddle there would have been no reason for Bones to bring it up to Angela. It had to be that something unexpected occurred.
Second, keeping what happened private perfectly fits the characters, their relationship, and the situation (being in the middle of a manhunt). These are not characters who will suddenly start smooching in public and calling each other Sweetums and Pookie (unless they’re undercover). In this way they can definitely “be together without actually being together.”
I have a feeling we won’t see anything official until mid season 7, when some dramatic plot development “outs” them as lovers.
I think this way of getting them together will ratchet up the sexual tension in a major way and I’m really happy about it.
Loved it! I laughed and I cried! Can’t get any better than that! Did they or didn’t they? Can’t say that really bothers me too much just glad the magic is back! First episode all season that I felt that way!

She still relies on facts and evidence – she never for one second pretended to believe in Booth’s Yeti, simply found a factual, rational explanation for what she saw.
She still maintains her pride in her work. She NEVER apologized to the podiatrist in Feet on the Beach the way Sweets and Booth wanted her to. She told him she was absolutely right to criticize his paper.
In Sign in the Silence, she gave Sweets and the lawyer both the smackdown, reminded them that she’s the best in the world at what she does.
Give me an example of Brennan being made weak. Because she’s cried a few times? Dust off your DVD’s she’s cried every season. She cried all the time in season 2.
Because she has empathy? Umm…people who don’t have empathy are sociopaths. Sociopaths are different, but most people think it’s kind of not good to not care if other human beings live or die.
You think we are getting a fairy tale now? A fairy tale is what the folks who are irate now wanted last year. Booth mooning and moping over Brennan, giving her undying adoration and asking for nothing in return except the opportunity to keep worshiping her. For a disturbingly large percentage of the female viewing audience, this was perceived as an ideal relationship.
When Booth somehow reacquired his testicles and decided that maybe a healthy relationship involved someone actually loving him back, his character was demonized.
What it sounds like you want is a Brennan who is free to do and say whatever she likes, treat people however she likes, and all the other characters just love her, never get annoyed with her, never get hurt by her, and keep giving to her, while expecting and getting nothing in return. THAT is a fairy tale.
That is not what I want.
The problem is it would be too long and excruciating to make my point.
I was SO disappointed! Before the episode everybody said some major development between Booth and Brennan was going to happen and all she did was CRY INTO HIS SHOULDER???!!!!! And yes, I know sex was implied, but we don’t actually know what happened. It doesn’t really matter if we don’t see it!!!!! Hopefully next week’s episode will settle the matter once and for all.
Other than that, it really was a great episode. I was sad to see VNM die. He wasn’t my favorite but the scene was still so sad:(

I hope there wasn’t a shag, because I don’t think I’d want it to go down like that. When they get together, it needs to be about them and how they feel about each other, not about comforting each other in a time of loss. Their feelings for one another shouldn’t be compromised by the stress of the situation.
I also hope that if they did sleep together, the pregnancy is not written into the story. Booth already has one kid who was a surprise. Seriously, if that doesn’t cause a single dude to buy a Costco sized box of condoms, I don’t know what would. It’s a bit of a cop out to have a second unplanned pregnancy.
I have given plenty of examples in my previous comments on older reviews, and if you go check them you will see other people thinking like me, it seems they may have stopped watching the show which I might just do too.

The burden is not on me to go looking for support for YOUR argument. I see these same platitudes all the time “The show is making Brennan change.” Emily Deschanel’s vocal inflection and delivery has changed, for sure. Brennan is written as more culturally unaware, yes. But not once in six seasons has she changed her mind on any of her science vs faith issues. She is still an atheist, she does not believe in fate, mythical creatures, magic, any of that. Give me an example of your claim that faith made science her bitch. Tell me a time when Brennan changed her fundamental beliefs. She acknowledges that there are results in the world for which she does not know the cause, but she knows there is always a cause.
If you don’t like the show, you should stop watching – it really is the best way to indicate to the showrunners that you aren’t happy with the way the show is. I doubt Fox cares whether people watch and complain or watch and applaud, so long as they watch. Vote with your eyeballs if you are that unhappy.
Loved the comments! and liked the episode a lot too. I was on the edge of my seat, hoping it wouldn’t be Sweets. I agree that Vincent had a wrenching death scene. I thought it was interesting that Booth, rather than Brennan, was the one to hold pressure since she is the anatomically-trained one. Maybe she was too emotionally involved.
I miss Booth. The old Booth with a bit of vulnerability and growth (as a father, a cop, a soldier, or a friend) from previous seasons. What we saw tonight was SuperBooth. He had almost a robot-like focus on Brodsky. I loved how Genevieve was a great foil for Booth. It shows how advanced his FBI functioning is when she is doing a great job too, but has to deal with all the scut work. I thought his work ethic (and results) were very sexy, but I want to see him open up more. I keep hoping that season 7 will see him growing more, and maybe we’ll learn more about his family and background.
I think it’s funny how many opinions there are about whether they had sex or not. I assumed they did, but I see the points of the non-believers. I guess the point is that we don’t know for sure. Will the writers try to continue the sexual tension by exchanging will they/won’t they with did they/didn’t they? Or will they be together but try to hide it from everyone? Gosh, I’m not sure how long they could keep that charade up??!!??
AAAAAAAHHHH MAAH GAWD!! That’s the sound I made when this episode finished. It was definitely the most emotional episode of Bones I have ever seen, I think I spent about half the episode crying after Vincent died, especially every time we saw one of the team dealing with his death.
Now to the most important part of course, Booth and Brennan!! To answer Sarah’s question, did they sleep together? HELL YES THEY DID! And does it even matter? How can you even ask that question?? Are we on the same planet?? This is what we have been waiting since Bones began!
My favourite look was definitely the one between B&B at the end when Brennan showed up with the pot-plant. Made me all gooey inside 🙂
Is it just me, or did Cam’s comment about the plant seem WAY insensitive?
Anyway, love love LOVED it. I just hope they don’t kill the romance too soon, because the writers seem to hate us being happy for too long. I have seen some comments from the producers that there have been worries of the ‘moonlighting’ effect, and that the show would lose momentum. Honestly I really don’t see that happening because we are so invested in the characters and want to see them happy together! I think I would still watch it even if the whole show was a B&B romance-fest!
Just to add on after reading the other comments:
I actually think that Bones’ pregnancy is a big possibility. Remember Booth’s quote a couple of eps ago? “BOOM! Mama bones…” (Fave quote btw).
I think this is a total hint for us! Plus the fact that ED is preggers now, they can write it in…
And in honour of Vincent: If the Sun was replaced by a black hole of the same mass, the orbits of the planets surrounding it would be unaffected.

Do you or do you not agree with the following: Not once in six seasons has Booth changed his mind on any of his faith vs science issues. He is still an believer, he does not believe in science, rational thinking, the possibility that God may not exist… any of that.
Can you tell me a time when Booth changed his fundamental beliefs? Or a time when he has acknowledged that sometimes things can be explained scientifically/rationally, and made it sound like he would be able to accept that kind of thinking even from others?
It all comes down to two different views of the world. But it looks like it is okay to believe in faith and not change your mind about that, but it is not okay to not believe in magic and not change your mind about that. Trut is- this argument leads nowhere. And it’s tiresome to watch. Science and Faith should work together, the constant battle of science vs faith is not something I want to watch. Both are vital parts of life, neither is better than the other, so I wish they’d stop the confrontation on this show.
And about watching/not watching the show. Some people have no choice. For example if you have to write about it. (not true in my case) As long as the critisism is well presented, it is alright. It is refreshing to hear about all sorts of different opinions.
This episode was really great. Although I am sad that VNM is gone (he was so funny!) I think that this episode was really well done. As for the B&B part, don’t know if you notice but when Brennan enters Booth’s room the time is 4:47. And at the beginning of the end in the beginning (4X26) the time is also 4:47. Perhaps that’s a clue. I think that something really happened between them.
You want me to present examples, I already did many times and I’m tired to explain myself again and again especially in a foreign language.
Each time I do that, there is someone else jumping in and asking me again and again about something I already mentions elsewhere, and when I do, someone else again jumps in and asks me to prove again the first thing I talked about because they didn’t see the first comment but just the last one, and it becomes a chain reaction.
And Yes it is your burden, you are the one asking for examples, I told you there are some in older reviews on this site. I know I have plenty of examples, like when Brennan changes her fundamental beliefs on the origin of love at the end of dentist in the ditch.
And as for the changes that have not been completed yet, let me tell you that the show is not over, and that’s why I’m still watching, hoping what I’m afraid of will not happen, unfortunately, from what I have seen so far, the writers are going where I don’t want them to go, but we never know.

She changes her mind about talking to headstones and bringing flowers. Not that there is something wrong in talking to headstones and bringing flowers or changing your mind. The point is that there was nothing wrong in not needing to talk to headstones or bring flowers. That was among many things what made her different/original, what made her her, that was her having a different view on the world and thus different needs/reactions to it that are not bad to have, what made her refreshing etc. She also changed her mind on marriage, she not longer thinks that it is an antiquated ritual, but just that it needs a good reason. She changed her mind about having kids, she seemed pretty determined in not having kids in S1. Brennan now can believe something like her father’s innocence/guilt even without evidence, that goes against her fundamental beliefs of not jumping to conclusion before all the evidence is in, it also goes against her conversation she had with Angela in boy in a tree about the difference between hoping and believing, where Brennan said that no she never just believes, she hopes though, she changed about that. Etc.
To continue what S. said about the battle between science and faith. What I get from the show is that Brennan hides behind her faith in reason because she is afraid of the world or to protect her (harbingers/girl in the fridge/devil in the details etc) and she acknowledged it herself in devil in the detail, but I never get that people like Booth or Angela hide behind their irrational beliefs because they are afraid of the world too, because they can’t stand the facts/truth or that bad things happen for not good reasons and they need to believe in a master plan, and keep believing in something that goes against logic as being foolish. That they are afraid of a rational world just as much as Brennan is of an irrational one.
I get from the show that Brennan’s beliefs are fear-based but Booth/Angela’s beliefs are hope-based (mother and child in the bay). If you hope something that means you fear the opposite, yet presenting things like it’s done on the show make Brennan’s beliefs look negative, cynical and not realistic thus wrong, but Booth/Angela’s beliefs look positive, optimistic and not foolish thus right…
I was wondering about the 4:47 connection. Maybe they did it after all. It would have been nice if they had shown any tiny inkling and not left it so spectacularly ambiguous. This show is so stingy with the affection/kissing. Distant gazes of unrequited love can only take you so far before you finally have to put your foot down and think, “alright already, I need a payoff to all of this.” No payoff this episode–maybe in the next?
When I think about Booth and Brennan I see different beliefs/values/faith and yet the same bad results in their personal lives.
The problem is that it is not acknowledged on the show, only Brennan is being shown the errors of her way, and being called out on her issues/behavior that Booth share too, but he is not being shown as clearly as Brennan the error of his way, is not being called out on his issues.
Brennan was seen as arrogant, cocky and stubborn when she was so sure about herself and her beliefs, even though she never really tried to change Booth’s mind the way he does. Booth was also quite sure of himself and his beliefs, but he was seen as being principled and strong to keep his irrational beliefs faced with rationality.
(The example you give about Brennan still being an atheist, for me again it was a way to show the error of her way, she was so rational that she couldn’t see that VMN wasn’t talking to her, she made a mistake because of her rationality, which is BS btw, I don’t get why rationality would prevent someone to think that in a case like this even an atheist would do something as irrational as pleading to stay alive. Also, like I said, the show is not over, so it wouldn’t surprise if she changed her mind, or at least acknowledged that she could be wrong about her faith in reason which would be fine, but will we get Booth acknowledging the same about his faith????)
Like I said, they have the same issues, like GG said, they are not opposite, yet in Booth’s case the same issues make him a strong hero, and in Brennan’s case they make her an impervious robot. Because of that Brennan is asked to be more human, open, vulnerable, dependent etc, but Booth is not, is asked to remain the strong independent hero that has never shown his feelings more than Brennan, that doesn’t really ask for help either but nobody complains, that focus on his job to avoid to deal with his emotions ; just like Brennan, Booth has always been good at compartmentalization too, but nobody complains when he does it. Brennan from the start has been quite open with Booth after he told her that you have to give a bit of yourself in order to get something back, Brennan had to wait till S4 to learn about Booth’s childhood, he is not as open as Brennan, yet Brennan is still asked to be more open, and not just to her close friends anymore but with others too (feet on the beach). Booth is not asked to be more open even though he has always been less open than Brennan… What people ask from Brennan, they don’t want to get from Booth: vulnerability, weakness, dependence, tears, doubt etc.
Talking about imperviousness/compartmentalize, if Brennan was impervious there was nothing to compartmentalize, but we were told and have seen for years that she was compartmentalizing which means that she could not have been impervious… We were told many many times that she was not as cold and unfeeling as she seemed. She became impervious during the show, and nobody ever acknowledged that on the show, nobody ever noticed in S4 how literal she has become, because she wasn’t that much before, no they are all acting as is she has always been that literal…
So in the end the show simply doesn’t make sense anymore, the characters change to fit the plot…
Brennan being able to promise Booth that she will always stand by his side (killer in the crossairs) is going against her fundamental belief that you can’t possibly know how you will feel for the rest of your life, that change will also allow her to marry Booth, something she has said that a rigorous intellectual person would never do because of what I said above. And we all know that the endgame is BB in a romantic committed dyad (which apparently in the writers’ mind is the only way to live a full life), and for some reasons it seems to me that for that to happen the writers think that one has to be able to just believe, go with one’s heart/feelings even if they go against logic, has to promise eternity, has to see the world in an enchanted way (magic, fate, yes you will say she still doesn’t believe in them, but she also said that she still has to improve, so I’m afraid it means for the writers that she has to believe in them, that it will be the last step, and the show is not over yet, she still can change her mind) etc.
I think that Brennan just needed to start taking risk, for that I personally don’t think she has to change any of her fundamental beliefs.
I did love this episode, and I was talking to the TV several times! VNM was my favorite (after Zach), and I will miss him. I saw him recently in a Lifetime episode with Jane Seymour…his character’s name was Nigel !! but did not have a British accent. It occurred to me while I was reading all the previous comments that Booth told Brennan she was going to stay at his apartment that perhaps it wasn’t for safety but that he knew she was very upset and would need him. I loved that she did not argue this time. This sniper story has not interested me as much as others….these last 2 seasons just have not had the depth and quality writing as the seasons 1-3. Even with with last few good shows, I am not as freaked about missing Bones shows during the summer. I used to have withdrawal to be away from my favorite show and the 2 characters that I was basically in love with. I enjoy reading all of your comments and I am glad this show does continue to make us think and feel.
mommahurley, KUDOS! You nailed it – at least for me. The characters have grown and changed so much that for someone who has seen random eps here and there, they may be unrecognizable. But for the faithful viewer who has endured, cried, laughed and loved for six full seasons with B&B, what a treat it was to watch HOLE IN THE HEART. I <3 Hart Hanson and his genius for character development.
Delph, no human being is truly IMPERVIOUS… it has been Brennan’s belief that she is impervious and her fear to let people in that has stunted her and made her so robotic and “cold”. Booth has “seen the truth of {her} and is dazzled by that truth”. He knows there is no other for him and he has allowed her the time to change – to find and feel love from this family she has created for herself in place of the family that so desperately let her down. I think the characters are true to the growth – if they were exactly the same as in the beginning of BONES we would have ALL jumped ship long ago…

People have been saying about the matching times for the coma dream episode,and this episode when they climbed into bed with eachother.were both 4:47. I was watchign the commenary on the season finale for season 5, with the hoarder, and Hart Hanson was doing the commentary, he said that the apartment room number ( 3C ) would be extremely important in season 6. does anyone have any Idea’s.

I don’t think that S1 Brennan thought she was impervious, but that people thought she was and still do, that’s why in woman in the car (and later in S2 and still now) she felt the need to tell Booth that even though she is a professional she still has feelings (because of what Booth said about the professionals that kidnapped the boy and cut his finger), but it is easier to just see the boy’s finger and not the boy behind it, for her to do her job. That’s why some of us call it inconsistency that now Brennan is presented as having been impervious to damage when they met, she was not impervious, she was just able to compartmentalize to do her job, and yes she probably did it a bit too much, but when it was really needed she would feel and empathize. I don’t think she was impervious to Stires’ betrayal, or Booth’s for that matter, but she moved on and finally trusted Booth again, that’s being strong, not impervious as said in the elevator episode. But I don’t object that she was more impervious than most people, but again I don’t see what is wrong with that as long as she was not to everything. Nobody is previous to everything either, and since she had a different view on the world, of course she would not be (im)previous to the same thing as most. Again, it’s a matter of opinion/education/culture. Nobody can say who is right. But it seems to me, and that is my opinion, that the show is telling that Brennan’s faith in reason is wrong, and the cause of her imperviousness that kept her from living a full life that requires to see the world in an enchanted/magical way, like Booth or Angela. And that without believing that love is transcendent and eternal she will never be happy, otherwise why did they make Brennan want to believe it at the end of Cinderella? And since Booth promised that she will one day, I bet that she will, maybe she already did during their night together, maybe that’s what happened, and I personally think that it would go against her fundamental beliefs, and the thing is I don’t think it is needed at all. JMO
I understand your POV, Delta. I think however, that Brennan didn’t always feel that way – we see this through the bits we get of her childhood. I think we are to understand that it isn’t really her BELIEF system, but a defense mechanism. She wasn’t always this way – she made herself this way because of hurt/fear/anger. I choose to believe that because Booth has also experienced some of the things that Brennan has experienced, but retained his faith/hope/love that he recognizes in her what could have happened to himself. That’s part of the draw. The inconsistencies are there because, since season 1, the warm loving Brennan has always been there – underneath the hard shell. We have always been shown pieces of that. Booth got tired and lonely and he was hurting in season 5 and he pushed – and IMHO he should have pushed. He also backed off. I also choose to believe that Booth was mean and colder to Bones while with Hannah because he was living the life with hannah that he wants so desperately to live with Brennan. That is what in turn pushed Brennan to compromise her staid and “hard” belief system to something more akin to Booth’s. She’s softening because he hardened against her – a dose of her own medicine perhaps.
I love these debates. I love how everyone puts things into place for each other. This is what good writing does. It makes people THINK and debate and come together. I love that your opinion is so differing from mine, Delta and that these discussions bridge the gaps from Thursday to Thursday 🙂
I was VERY DISAPPOINTED in this episode, and I think it did very little, if anything to restore the B&B chemistry that has been missing all season. The Brodsky story arc, as well as its conclusion, were underwhelming, but the big problem is still that both Boot and Brennan are out of character, particularly in their relationship. Several people have noted how booth is not as open and jovial as he used to be, and seems to be displaying 0 feelings towards Brennan. But what’s up with Brennan herself? She used to always want to be out in the field, in fact she made booth take her, and while she was coldly rational most of the time, when it came to Booth being in danger it always triggered strong emotions (e.g. killer in the concrete, hero in the hold, critic in the cabernet). In the last episode she lets him go off after Brodsky without her, and when she’s on the phone with him she just rattles off facts, completely unconcerned with his safety. The only bright spot might be the bedroom scene if they DIDN’T have sex. Then it might have been a good moment to melt the ice that has built up between them all season long. If they did have sex, and their relationship went 0 to 100 in one night over VNM’s death that would make no sense, not to mention it would be uncharacteristic of either of them.

Agree with everything you have said.
I don’t object to Brennan changing, so long as her intelligent, rational, independent, thinking self remains intact. But it hasn’t. “If there was a God, he would have let VNM stay” ???? Come on, now. That’s what is supposed to underly this brilliant woman’s take on theology? And Booth is the one to explain that God doesn’t work that way, like a parent to a (very young) child?
Also, Booth needs to change as well. He needs to question his own beliefs and choices, which have gotten him to a place where he’s very hostile and shut down. Just not a really warm or enjoyable character to watch anymore.
I hope they did not have sex, because they are not at a place in the rebuilding of their relationship where they are ready for that. I hope we see that the night was a part of trying to rebuild — like, they have a conversation in which they are honest with each other, and Booth confesses some of his mistakes and acknowledges changes he needs to make. I’d be more hopeful if we get a chance to see this happen. Or rather, to see that this happened during their night together.
Just want to add thank you very much Delph for your great posts and i agree with you 100 %. It is so dissappointing to see how these once so great characters have been destroyd imo. Most of that have been done this season.
I can´t understand how they went from that good to this.
Another thing that has been frequent these last episodes has been the constant attacks on Brennan from those who are supposed to know her most. How can they just assume the worst of her all of the sudden. While she continuosly stand by Booth and assure him how good he is that he is a good dad, good person. Why does no one of her friends beleive in her ?
I miss them and most i miss the old Booth. I don´t see any emotion from him at all now.
Then about her being impervious, really where did that come from all of the sudden It just felt weird (again). They began by having Booth state he needed time to get over his anger. Now all of a sudden is that just gone ? Now we wait for Brennan again. How come everything about Booth is just going away without any conclusion or answers.

Oh, for God’s sake, THINK about what you are saying! After what happened in the lab, do you actually think Booth would allow Brennan to go with him while he hunted Broadsky? Do you think he would actually risk putting her in the line of fire? NO.
And no, she doesn’t just rattle off facts. She tells Booth that Broadsky’s right hand is broken. That was a very useful piece of information.

I’m so sad that vincent died.. But I am really glad where booth and brennans relationship is heading! I hope there is a bones/booth pregnancy to go along with emily deschanel’s pregnancy!
For years the other characters with varying degrees of subtlety (and sometimes none at all) have been encouraging Brennan to allow herself to feel more than she thinks is safe.
Brennan bravely did a lot of reaching out to people in this ep, and I adored it. It’s a very natural human need to want comfort. but another matter to admit it and reach out to someone else for it. She reached for Booth twice, allowed herself to do it. She opened up to Angela and both told her about her night at Booth’s and her confusion about her motivation for reaching for him.
By the way, Angela is basically playing us. We are the reaction she had to Brennan’s revelation about the comfort snuggle. The sheer gobsmacked glee of a good friend who wants to see you happy and knows how to get you there. I really loved Angela in this ep.
With all this emotional homework Brennan has been doing, I’m getting really impatient with Sweets. Maybe it’s just because the audience sees all aspects of her blooming emotional life and Sweets is only written to see what happens in his presence. But the accumulation of Sweets’ comments to her has seemed unnecessarily harsh the last half of this season. Brennan is starting to react to slights directed at her, the ones her coworkers are used to thinking she doesn’t notice or care about. Cam’s potted plant comment (it was a hydrangea, btw) and Mr. Nasiri’s comment about the hearing impaired girls last ep are two examples. In an odd way, the writers are allowing Brennan to do a little better job at adjusting to her emotions that some of those around her.
Oh, and all of the lovely eye contact! When Booth got the text message that Brodsky had been spotted, and he just looked at Bones and she only nodded, no words. He waited for her acknowledgement – do what you have to do. And when Booth told her, didn’t ask her, where she’d be staying the night. All the arguing took place in silence, and I was so glad she didn’t squash his protective instinct.
Really, this is an episode that makes me glad I have a DVR. I’ve saved four eps to rewatch now and again this summer, and I’ll burn this one up between now and next October.
I could say more, but it would involve lots of squeeeeee-ing and emoticons and exclamation points, and words like ‘yummy’ but I’ll spare you all that and just say this is one of the most enjoyable Bones eps I’ve seen in a while.
And in honor of the late Vincenzo, unlike their gasoline counterparts, diesel engines don’t have spark plugs.
Random VNM fact: In medevial England, they were so afraid of burying people alive that they tied strings to the fingers of the dead. These strings attached to a bell on top of the grave. If a corpse were to wake up, a night guard would hear it and unbury them.
Personally, I think Broadsky’s motive was that Booth wanted him gone. That would stand in the way of Broadsky’s “good guys” regime, and so that made Booth a “bad guy.” and Matt Lysinger was just ‘collateral damage’ to cover his tracks.

I think that they didn’t have sex. They just spend the night holding onto each other, which is just as meaningful. But I think that yes, it is important to know if they had sex or not … because it has been SIX SEASONS and I will be really pissed if they just get together properly without a good make-out scene.
Great episode all around. It made me laugh, cry, scream at the TV, jump for joy, etc, etc! I was crying hysterically when VNM died “I don’t want to leave. Don’t make me leave” (tear) Booth was obviously concerned about Brennan’s safety which is why he wanted her to stay with him. Brennan seeking Booth’s comfort was touching. I am so happy at the way Brennan has grown emotionally over the course of the season. I about threw something at the TV when the cameras followed Hodgins when Angela and Brennan were talking about Brennan getting into bed with Booth. I mean, seriously, Angela told Hodgins to leave not us too!
Did they or didn’t they? Well, Angela certainly knows something significant happened that night. I hope that B&B didn’t sleep with each other. It just wasn’t the right time for their first time. Hopefully they just talked about their relationship moving further. Maybe waking up together they realized that that is where they both belong. But, Angela’s happy smile at the end when Brennan tucked her arm around Booth was hard to miss. If this is what they meant when they said fans will be talking about this all summer, I guess they are correct!

It was a really good episode… definitely one of the best this season and in a long time! I loved the action, the emotion and the acting – plus the story. Good job writers… this episode really paid off for a very rocky and off-kilter season 6.
My only concern is that they had sex. I honestly REALLY hope that they didn’t. Because if we waited for six years only to have it happen off screen, I will scream. It would be such a tease. If they at least show us in flashbacks I could handle that. But THIS (if they did it) would have been their first REAL kiss… a kiss that signified the beginning of something, a kiss that they both wanted equally… for us to miss them kissing slowly, then more passionately, and then continuing until fade to black – that would be cruel. After all these years, it’d just be cruel.
So that was my main concern, and it put a pit in my stomach.
But other than that, I really did LOVE the episode.
ummm…. WOW!!! I am so glad I don’t watch the previews to the episodes. I had no idea what was coming. So that was what we’ve been waiting for for 6 seasons, I think. And I like it. I like that it wasn’t what I expected. That said, they better show something.

That episode is so frustrating!! I was just sooo upset we didn’t get to know what exactly happened after the “cralling into bed”!
But I do agree that it wouldn’t be right if they did have sex.. after so much sexual tension between the two, making them have conmfort sex is just not right (or did they? and then they will say they just did it to get comfort and it didn’t mean anything more?) … But no, I really hope thet didn’t! 1. Booth needs to admit (at least to himself) that he still loves Bones (and that she’s “the person who doesn’t go anywhere”) 2. Bones is too rational to have sex around 5am when she knows Booth needs some rest to kill Broadsky in the morning… and don’t you think she would have said to Angela : “I had sex with Booth” instead of “I got into bed with Booth”? She’s ALWAYS stating the facts!
So I just hope they opened up, said something about their feelings in that bed.. or maybe that life is too short to wait until the dates they wrote on those papers they burnt?!

You are 100% correct in you. Brennan made a point for Booth to get sleep since he was
going to kill Broadsky in the morning. No sex was had.. she just did not want to be alone.
There were some rather lame scenes for me….. singing around the coffin was not
really needed for the scene.
All is all, not the best episode but not the worst one.

Up until she married Hodgins, Angela had a commitment issue too, just like Brennan, that was first made clear in skull in the desert. Yet Angela has kinda the same beliefs system as Booth, the opposite of Brennan’s, which shows that Brennan’s commitment issue has nothing to be with her rational beliefs system and thus doesn’t need to change in that regard.
@Gina The idea that Brennan’s rational beliefs system is only the result of her trauma is exactly what I’m complaining about, the idea that her beliefs system is bad/wrong/negative. We have been told that she has always been kinda closed off etc, even as a child. The idea that Brennan was wasting her life, was not happy etc just because she chose science over religion unlike Booth, is what I’m complaining about, especially since Booth’s personal life is not better than Brennan’s when you look carefully. He didn’t and still doesn’t have a lot of friends, he was/is not living the big life either, he was/is hyper-independent, he was/is a loner, he was a gambler, he never appeared to me to be particularly happy, he was/is closed off etc, mostly just like Brennan. He talks the talk, but he doesn’t walk the walk ; he doesn’t follow his own advices, to the point one could ask if all his preaches only concern women after all and not human beings and thus not men, him…
And Brennan has said that she does hope things, she still had hope in S1, she didn’t just believe something because she wanted it to be true, but she would still hope that it was, I don’t see how this is bad, I see this as being realistic, but the show implies it is pessimistic.

Genevieve and Sweets would make a pretty awesome pairing… I never liked Daisy. She bothers me. Why couldn’t it have been her?
As for Did They/Didn’t They, I say yes. There’s all the symbolism, like 4:47 on the clock. And Bones and Angela… well, their expressions didn’t say “cuddling” to me. Plus, Emily Deschanel is pregnant, so this could work well.
I’ve now watched the episode several times now, and some scenes several more times and I really think it’s one of the best they’ve done. Plus, I love that they’re giving us back the characters that we love without the needless drama that has been associated with this season.
I have to say, am on the fence with the did they/didn’t they question. I really hope that they did not and think that due to the seriousness of the day and what everyone, especially Booth needed to do they next day, they didn’t. But would love it if they finally came to an understanding that they would be together after he got Broadsky. I agree with the other comment above that I think that we deserve to see the first real kiss between them. I’m hoping that the looks and the touches after Booth got Broadsky were the beginning of the “official” courtship and we get to go along for the ride.
Still can’t get this episode out of my mind and will greatly miss VNM.

I really liked this episode even though VNM was the one who was shot. That being said the one thing that REALLY bugs me is the snide comment Cam makes about the plant Brennan brings when they give VNM his send off….don’t know why but it does!
I think Booth wanted to be at his apartment because he was ready….he knows the layout and exits in the dark. There wouldn’t be as much stumbling around in an emergency.
I thought it was interesting how pressure was being applied to Booth by his own friends…Sweets telling him that if Booth goes down the rest of the team will too.
That would be hard to deal with.
I think maybe B&B didn’t have sex at 4:47 am but I think maybe after VNM’s sendoff something interesting happened….
