SMALLVILLE Executive Producers Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders Tease the Series Finale

After ten seasons of SMALLVILLE, the series comes to an epic conclusion tonight. But saying goodbye to the show is a little bittersweet to those involved.

“This was a huge endeavor and had a lot of challenges,” executive producer Brian Peterson told reporters earlier this week. “It feels like a huge weight has been lifted. But, more importantly, I think we’re really proud that everyone put 110% into the finale.”

For longtime fans of the series, the return of Michael Rosenbaum (Lex) is one of the most anticipated parts of the two-hour episode.

“As he already revealed, we only had Michael for one day, and there was only so much we could do with him,” Peterson said. “[But] there are a couple big twists with Lex we did not shown you.”

“Obviously because Lex hasn’t been on the show the past couple of years, we need to tie up the last couple years and the season,” executive producer Kelly Souders explained. “So we obviously had Darkseid looming out there, but for us when we were thinking about Rosenbaum coming back and our SMALLVILLE Lex and what his purpose was, it was always not quite what you expected and always sort of more human and emotional than I think any of us starting out on the SMALLVILLE series would have expected. So we really went back in the pilot and thought, ‘Here’s that guy who showed up and was really personable and super, super sympathetic and just wanted to thank a guy for saving his life’ and so when we looked at having him back in the finale, it was the same thing. They’re going to go on to be huge enemies, but what is it that is pivotal for our Lex Luthor and our Clark Kent and how do we wrap up the relationship that’s so complicated and mixed with emotions for ten years?”

But despite the importance of Lex to Clark’s journey, the lingering doubts about whether Rosenbaum would return to the show had the producers initially planning a Lex-free series finale.

“We had published and prepped an entire finale without him in it,” Peterson revealed. “And there were things we had planned on planting in the season [if he was going to return] that we didn’t…We were thrilled, don’t get me wrong.”

And Chloe, one of the other notable returns for the series finale?

“We have her for half of the show,” Peterson said. “There are a lot of different ways people want Chloe[‘s arc] to end and we service her character in a way that’s right for who she was and who she is becoming. And she has one kind of big moment with Clark.”

“And I will say Chloe fans should stay tuned through the whole show,” Souders said. Hmm…

Given how many years the show has been on, I asked the producers if they felt the pressure of trying to balance their desires for the finale with what the fans wanted and what the original source material told them was Clark’s destiny?

“The good thing is we’re as big of fans [of the series] as anybody else, but yes [there was pressure],” Peterson said.

“It was a lot of pressure to wrap up 10 years. Just to do a finale every season takes everything out of everybody,” Souders added. “To try and do that for ten years…yeah, there was a lot of pressure.”

“We know we’ll never hit everything — it’s impossible — but I think the finale hit 80-90 percent of what everybody will want,” Peterson said. “More than almost any other episode we’ve done.”

“And the pressure is here,” Souders said, indicating herself and Peterson. “There’s nobody calling up saying, ‘You better do this!'”

But there are some moments they are especially proud of and excited for fans to see.

“There’s a couple of moments in the church — there’s one when Lois is about to walk down the aisle.” Souders said. “The aisle is quite — I’ll just say the aisle. I have a couple of great, favorite moments there.”

“And then there’s a very good scene with a door!” Peterson teased. “There’s one shot, it’s like the SMALLVILLE shot.’ You’ll know it the second you see it.”

I cannot wait.
