BONES Season Finale Recap: ‘The Change in the Game’
May 19, 2011 by Sarah Curtis
Hey, hey, BONES fans! It’s our last chance to talk about season six, and there is quite a bit to discuss.
You know, the titles of these season finale episodes always make me a little wary, and this one, “The Change in the Game” was no different. After all, did we really need ANOTHER change of events? Some people have joked lately that if they hear the word “reset” come out of the mouths (or pens) of the writers, they might scream. So the question remains…is this is a re-set, or is it a shove forward? Or something in between? In my opinion, it’s not exactly a natural course of events for these characters, but that doesn’t necessarily make it unrealistic. More on that later, but first…
THE CASE:
The Scene of the Crime: At a young bratty boy’s birthday party at a bowling alley, the body of a man falls from one of the pin setters. Brennan determines he’s a male, mid-30s in age. His body was mangled after death, however, leading Brennan and Booth to call it a murder.
The Victim: Jeff Fowler, self titled “The Closer.” He’s cocky and superstitious and mostly hated. He was in a bowling league with Max called “The Thunderballs.” His team called him “The Gloater,” and when his murderer is revealed, all of the surrounding suspects plead with Booth to let him go, as if Jeff deserved his cruel fate of being murdered and mangled by bowling pin machines.
Potential Suspects & Motives: After Max’s innocence is jokingly proven, he invites Booth and Brennan to join him and meet his bowling team. B&B go undercover as Buck and Wanda, and just about every person they meet is a potential suspect. There is Amber, the young and vicious girl who mocks her opponents and teammates as she strategizes. There is Hercules, the suave man but terrible bowler who is convinced Jeff’s death was a gift from God for him to make it big at bowling. Presiding over the bowling tournaments is “The Raven,” a slightly scary man whose bowling career was cut short when Jeff pulled a prank on him. On the other team, there’s Blake, a lanky but cocky kid who “benefits” from Jeff’s death by being a new hit with the ladies of the alley, including Alison Rose, an older woman who has no problem flirting with any man.
The Lab Results: While Angela is trying to go into labor and Hodgins keeps thinking she IS going into labor, Wendell tries to focus on the case. Without Brennan’s expertise at the lab, he’s on his own to determine cause of death. He accidentally slaps the lab table and hears a rattling sound coming from the victim’s skull. Inside is a small fragment, and Wendell realizes his nose was broken back into his brain, causing death. Then it’s just a matter of determining the murder weapon. But as he and Hodgins and Angela attempt it, Angela DOES go into labor. From then on, it’s REALLY up to Wendell to hold down the Jeffersonian fort, so to speak. He and Cam work over telecomputer video with Hodgins and Angela in the labor and delivery room. And that goes about as well as you’d imagine — except it’s BONES, so it actually DOES work!
The Interrogation Room: With Booth bowling his way toward finding the murderer, there is not much action at the FBI building. Sweets interrogates The Raven, trying to pull an alibi from him, but that’s about it.
The Verdict: Hodgins figures out that the particles on the victim are flakes, not chips. Bowling balls don’t flake, and so the murder weapon ISN’T a bowling ball. He suggests a motorcycle helmet, and there’s only one person at the alley with a motorcycle — the guy who works the shoe counter. His motive was revenge toward Jeff for not wearing socks with his rented bowling shoes.
MY Verdict: I liked the quirky characters at the bowling alley, and it’s always fun to see Max around. Booth and Brennan undercover was fun, as well. A solid enough case, as far as finales go, and especially because there was a lot of non-case business to attend to.
Speaking of…
The Squints:
I LOVED the Wendell, Hodgins and Angela scene where Wendell joked around and Hodgins wasn’t amused and Angela was annoyed about NOT being in labor. It made me laugh a lot. We already talked about Sweets, and there’s not much more else to say, except that I’m guessing he’s going to squee like the BB fangirl we all know he is when he finds out what’s happened between Booth and Brennan!
Cam was also sort of non-existent in this episode, but I liked the kiss she blew toward the computer screen and Angela. Very sweet.
And Wendell was certainly a very good sport about working the lab part of the case mostly on his own.
As for Hodgins and Angela? First of all, “Michael Staccato Vincent Hodgins” is just ridiculous enough that it works, right? One of the biggest laugh out loud moments of the episode came when Angela grabbed Hodgins by the chest hair and pulled so tight, it was a contest to see which of them was screaming the loudest. I liked loud, obnoxious in labor Angela–I thought it fit. And when they learned the news that their Prince of the Lab is healthy, I teared up a little. When Hodgins walked into the waiting room and introduced his son, I smiled and cried.
Speaking of fathers, Max’s knowing smiles throughout the episode were awesome. I’m not sure how much he DOES know, but it’s clear he knows there is something going on between his daughter and “the nicest guy to ever arrest him.”
Speaking of…
Booth and Brennan:
Sometimes I feel anxious about BONES-related things, and I have to tell myself that it’s just a fictional TV show. But one of my points of anxiety lately has been this idea that the writers are “using up all the good relationship stuff” on Hodgins and Angela. We’ve seen Booth and Brennan on a journey — no doubt about it. But the discussions, the long talks, the romantic dinners and hand holding on the street, and the “I love you”s…all things we’ve seen with Hodgela, well, I just feel like at this point, B&B are getting the sloppy seconds of screen time as far as their own “togetherness.”
Maybe I’m jumping to conclusions. Maybe all of that gooey stuff will occur in season seven; it is certainly possible. Also, there are probably a lot of people who don’t want that gooey stuff! But I can’t help feeling bummed that where there was room for a subtle romantic relationship to develop into more physicality with flirting and dates and all of that, what WE got to see (so far) was a night of comfort and a kiss on the cheek at a bowling alley. Again, not to discredit the incredible history and strength of their bond of partnership and friendship…it’s just…well, I’m still anxious about it.
Do I still have faith that the writers will make THAT part of the B&B journey beautiful? Yes, yes, I do.
As for the rest of this episode, I really liked the natural comfort between Brennan and Booth. We’ve seen that before when they were undercover, whether it was as Roxy and Tony or previously as Buck and Wanda. It was interesting that Brennan clarified that Wanda was Buck’s fiancée. I wasn’t surprised that Brennan continued to comment about the idea of having a child with Booth — after all, with Angela’s baby on the way, she was sure to consider it again. The reality that her dropped hints (I guess we can call them that?) were because she was actually pregnant was a shock, though less so when we consider it’s Brennan making the hints, particularly if she’s trying to weigh what might be Booth’s reaction. It was well-played that he so vehemently opposed the idea of having a child with Wanda (that might turn out like Amber) and then was slightly moved at the sight of Hodgins with Mikey, and then was rapturously happy (shades of the coma dream, anyone?) to learn that Brennan is pregnant with his baby. A very nice string of emotional reactions. Likewise, Brennan was very beautiful in this entire episode, and I liked that she stopped Booth on the side of the street, just like he stopped her in the season five premiere to tell her he loved her.
Okay, enough from me. What say you? Cool season ending plot twist or shady turn of events? Too rushed, or realistic? Did you like how the Hodgins and Angela storyline played out? It’s our last chance to weigh in, so let’s get to it. Discuss!

OH. MY. GOD. Not even sure what to say right now, but can not wait for next season. And the fade to black right then, what happened next????????
This is was incredibly disappointing and hackneyed. Really? An unplanned pregnancy? YAWN.
Wow! Great that they’re working in the pregnancy but didn’t expect that. Wish they’d do a flashback to the behind the scenes relationship. Feel like we’ve missed out on way too much.
cannot believe bones said she was pregnant, this fan will not be back in s7.
I wasn’t expecting them to write it in, and definitely not so quickly. And I agree that we need some flashbacks – I’m not even sure what the timeframe was supposed to be between this episode and the last. But the smiles on their faces right before it went to black, they looked overjoyed.
What?! So I guess they did do it! They had Vincent-Nigel-Murray-mourning comfort sex.
My money was SO on Booth and Brennan cuddling and kissing, maybe, but certainly NOT having sex, the night before Booth-sniper VS Mummy-sniper day.
After Brennan told him she was pregnant, and that he was the father, Booth smiled! And Brennan smiled! So I guess, it’s all good!
What?! I’m confused. What the what?! What’s going to happen now?
So does that mean a month has passed in time, in between episode 21 and episode 22?
What if it’s a false alarm, like it was for Angela with Wendell? Eh, probably not, since Emily Deschanel is pregnant, I guess they are trying to coincide it with Brennan on screen.
I did NOT see that coming. Hahaha. After six seasons, I’m still capable of being surprised!
OMG!! I have no other words! I can’t believe they actually did that! And I am a little disappointed we didn’t get so see anything behind it (although, when booth kissed Brennan on the cheek, it was so cute!). .. I certainly hope they are some flashbacks or something in the start of season 7!! I am excited and shocked and a little in disbelief! Loved their faces at the end!!. AHH, can’t believe it! OMG!
booth don’t even want to be dad to parker/let alone you claiming his dad when you never had sex/bones was you trying to compete with easy hannah/
OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!!!!! I am in such shock right now, but I absolutely cannot wait to watch it again! Season Seven…..BRING IT ON! I agree about the flashbacks! They owe the shippers that much!! Can’t wait for the recap!
Me: We’ve waited six seasons for this and we don’t even get one kiss!?
My roommate: I’m too loyal to freak out.
Booths face at the end was wonderful, but seriously. I’ve been watching this show for the development of Brennan’s character and her and Booth’s relationship. Unfortunately I don’t get to see the biggest development to happen yet just for the sake of a shock at the end.
We don’t watch bones for the shock, okay?
We watch it for the relationships.
OMG!!!! I figured it out towards the end. All of her talk about her and Booth not raising their baby to be like that girl hit me when she walked in to see Angela. I did not think they would work in Emily’s pregnancy! I remember reading that Hart Hanson pitched 6 different scenarios to work around it and I’m glad he picked this one!! I held my breath waiting for Booth’s reaction (after I squealed when she said she was pregnant). His smile….sigh…. Someone on twitter wrote that Bones went all X-Files with Booth and Brennan. I wonder if that’s why they did it (besides Emily being pregnant).
Angela and Hodgins were brilliant! I teared when they had that moment before the baby was born.
Definitely my fav Bones season finale!! I seriously cannot wait till September!!
I think the time frame has to be around a month, since that’s when most women suspect possible pregnancy. And, Angela says in the beginning that she’s overdue. In the past episode, she was about to pop. Plus, most tests don’t detect pregnancy until the first missed period. I’m sure we can account for some fancy blood test that can detect it right away, but that would also indicate Brennan is anticipating a pregnancy and is checking every day.
Well, now that they went and did it, the writers sure have some work on their hands! Now we NEED to see some flashbacks and explanations! But I swear, they redeemed this season for me. Can’t wait to see a baby Brennan/Booth!! Just imagine the number of storylines they have open for next season – writers do us proud!! 🙂
To clarify, the season was redeemed for me in the past 3 episodes in particular, not just the last few minutes of the finale. I finally feel like I have the show that I love back, and that it’s growing in the right direction.
Please excuse me, I’m a bit giddy tonight…
I am kinda bummed that there was not even one kiss, as Audrey said above. I really hope there will be a nice flashback scene in season 7, I think the shippers deserve a nice recap on how that night was. But then again… I’m not sure that it was a love scene to end all love scenes, considering the stress of sadness of Vincent’s passing, the sniperhunt the next day, and the sexiness of sweatshirts… it was probably brief and unremarkable, despite it being the first time.
But I would have liked a little more than big smiles… a kiss and a big hug, Booth picking Brennan up and swinging her around… would have been nice.
I’m curious about how Bones will pick up in season 7, will HH and Co. pick up without any time passing? Or will it open up with a bizarre dead body? Will B&B have been summering somewhere? Nesting? Will they already be married?
Loved Angela’s mood swings during labor!
Any episode with Max takes it up a notch. He totally knew they were together the whole time (even before I was ready to admit it!)
B+B: I am not thrilled that they got together without us seeing any of it. I agree with the poster above, we are watching for the relationships, so HOW DID IT HAPPEN???? If we have to wait during season 7 to find out how it happened, that is even worse than waiting for it to happen in the first place. Arg!
Booth looked like his dream came true at the end. Maybe we’ll see the old, happy Booth again in s7.
Of course, I’ll still watch.
I would really like to see happy Booth again. And happy Brennan too. At the same time!
OMG, that was abysmal. So I am going to be very nasty and say something that people won’t like.
I think that the writers are deliberately and cynically taking advantage of the fact that no one in their right mind would blame Deschanel for this piece of cliched nonsense. I mean, ‘actress falls pregnant, whole show goes kaboom, let’s blame the actress’ – most people are too fair to think or say that.
So basically we the audience are trapped: we not free to criticise this garbage storyline as we wish, because that would mean that we would criticise Deschanel’s very personal decision to have a baby – a decision that I completely respect and have no problem with. The point is this: everybody is forced to *understand* because otherwise it’ll be criticising Deschanel.
You now what? I I am critical, as well as quite annoyed, in terms of the writers’ decision to go for what was probably the very worst option they had on the table. WTF? This makes absolutely no sense.
I was kind of hoping that they wouldn’t go this route, honestly, because I think that I would have preferred that Booth and Brennan make the choice, of their own desire to be together, to become a couple. Now, like Angela said when she and Wendall had their pregnancy scare, they’re tied together whether they like it or not. Not that that’s a bad thing, and I think they ultimately wouldn’t have ended up there anyway, but I would have liked to have seen that decision made free and clear of any other considerations.
Still…I hope they have a little girl!!! I bet it will be a girl. Booth will be such a cute, overprotective daddy to a little girl, and Brennan can teach her to be in the next generation of crime-fighting forensic anthropologists! With an FBI agent for a daddy, she’ll be the best in the whole universe!
I think I might die before September. Never have I wished for a summer to pass so quickly.
…but may I add that I felt cheated on the whole baby-making process???? There wasn’t even a kiss! I think there should have been more time for us to see Booth’s reaction and Brennan’s reaction to Booth’s reaction. The shock value was high, yes, but they better start off season 7 by giving us all the back story. Including a recap/flashback to the baby-making night!
And… just realizing.
Since it’s been about a month since they snogged in the last episode, I’m fairly certain it wasn’t a one time deal and that they’ve been at it since. Unplanned pregnancy, yes. But not the miracle of “wow! we only slept together once, and I’m pregnant!” I think they have been sleeping together behind our backs! Unfair!
I’m pretty certain that there will be a flashback of their courtship redux (tridux, quadux, etc. etc.) in the beginning of season 7.
Ok. I’m relieved now.
“I’m pretty certain that there will be a flashback of their courtship redux (tridux, quadux, etc. etc.) in the beginning of season 7.”
I’m pretty certain there won’t be any, because Bones is by no means renowned for continuity. In fact, quite the opposite. They so rarely follow up on anything consistently that I would be extremely surprised. Also, lovey-dovey flashbacks are kind of useless for storytelling purposes when you have to write an episode that is about solving a case.
Always love “Bones” . Season 6 Finale was great for me…as 5,4,3,2 and 1.. and action…camera.. for season 7…soon?
i wont be watching season 7. After six seasons of great chemistry, the writers had something really special in their hands. But, they threw it away with just one of the worst choices ever. This pregnancy was so unexpected.
the writers should we working forward on the relationship, dating marriage then a baby? not a baby then dating or something
i am truly sadd.
Overall, I liked the episode – the case was good, Hodgins was hilarious, and I always love when Max is on.
But an unplanned pregnancy? really?? How cliche can you get? As an avid fan of the show, one who practically counts the minutes to each episode, I was really disappointed. Especially after all the publicity this episode got. I’m getting a little tired of the HH and co. saying about every other episode “we’ve never done anything like this before, it’s a complete game changer”. By my count, they’ve done it to about 7 episodes this season, and that’s without even mentioning all the episodes with the special celebrity guest stars (eg Jersey Shore), whose main function was taking away screen time from the cast. It’s getting repetitive and lowers my expectations from the show (like the boy who cried wolf).
Anyway, returning to the final – it was a good episode, especially by season 6 standards. But it was by no means exceptional, and considered all the hype surrounding it – it didn’t meet my expectations.
Pregnancy can be detected approximately 2 weeks after conception. It’s dated from the start of the last cycle (hence 4 weeks pregnant is approximately two weeks after conception give or take a little). The timing was fine. Based on what we know about Angela’s pregnancy, the time span between The Signs in the Silence and the finale was approximately one month and there were approximately 2 to 2 1/2 weeks between The Hole in the Heart and the finale (keeping in mind that Angela said she had a month left in her pregnancy in The Signs in the Silence and Brennan said they hadn’t had a case in over a week in The Hole in the Heart).
I loved it.
Oh and I forgot to mention – I LOVED the undercover costumes! They’re so funny, and Buck and Wanda are such great characters!
Estel said:

Good point. I’m happy the pregnancy happened, and I see the practicality of why it happened (Brennan is pregnant OR Brennan is not in 6-7 episodes and we endure FINDER guest spots or other backdoor mid-season pilots, oy).
That said, I also can’t help but wish we saw their romance play out on its own, rather than the gravity of a pregnancy impacting their decision in the slightest. Perhaps it’s just doing the right thing at the right time. Wouldn’t it be nice if the dates they each wrote down before burning it in the wish-making episode were the same date, and happened to be the night they got together? I’m sure an episode will address that. Whatever it is, it seems like Booth got over Hannah tout de suite, and I’m happy for it. I don’t want Booth sad and mopey over any other girl than Brennan!
Maybe the season 7 narrative arch will be about Booth getting Brennan to marry him, and Brennan losing the last of her imperviousness to say yes. I think the wedding could be with the child en route, or with the baby being part of the wedding.
Hopefully this was close to the date that Booth and Brennan picked to be strong enough to get together. As a shipper, I too would have liked to have seen some more physical connection, but considering a physical connection almost never happened after Booth’s profession of love until the past couple episodes, I’m happy for whatever little we get. But I see so many bumps in the road in the next few seasons for them, I think the writers could make another 3 or 4 seasons just for B&B and a storyline for them and their relationship along with solving murders. You can do it HH and company. Please make it work.
“I’m pretty certain that there will be a flashback of their courtship redux (tridux, quadux, etc. etc.) in the beginning of season 7.”
“I’m pretty certain there won’t be any, because Bones is by no means renowned for continuity. In fact, quite the opposite. They so rarely follow up on anything consistently that I would be extremely surprised.”
Amen. Every now and then Bones manages to knock one out of the park (see “The Doctor in the Photo”), but even its triumphs are often marred by poor writing and cheap set design (see, sadly, “The End in the Beginning”), and the writers’ near total disinterest in continuity or plausible character development. This season’s major plot contrivance–Hannah–didn’t fail for any reason but one: it was terribly executed. Booth became a narcissistic monster. Brennan became–and this is truly amazing–a caricature of a caricature, far, far more emotionally and socially awkward than she had ever been. None of it made sense. Bones will never be an Emmy winner, sure, but by settling for its own mediocrity it’s become something far worse: a cartoon.
A pregnancy that results from a grief-induced one-night stand? Please. It’s simply ridiculous. But I could have suffered through it happily perhaps if the writers had allowed the plot line a little room to breathe, let the audience soak in the possibilities a bit more, made us wait through an episode or two of Brennan and Booth really feeling their way through the potential awkwardness–or tenderness–of whatever happened between them, RATHER THAN LAZILY DROPPING A CRINGE-INDUCING “BOMBSHELL” INTO THE LAST 30 SECONDS OF THE SEASON FINALE.
And oh, my, God, “you’re the father”??? Are you KIDDING ME, writers? Like we couldn’t put that one together? It’s just insulting.
Oh guys, keep watching.
Who knows? Maybe we’ll get a few flashback episodes and see how the Booth and Brennan romance was built in the month or so between the last episode and the finale. Maybe they were together every night. Maybe that will appease us.
I’m curious if Brennan told Angela.
I think I might have liked the finale cliffhanger better if it had Brennan looking at a pregnancy test, with the results not being shown to the audience. And then joining the group (or just Booth) at the Founding Fathers ordering a ginger ale. And us, and Booth left wondering, what happened, with whom… and it would be a tantalizing tease all summer. Giving the writers the option of having a scare, or going through with the pregnancy storyline.
I loved the episode, especially how Angela and Hodgin’s baby had “Vincent” as a middle name and happy Booth looked at the end. I’m looking forward to how the story will play out next season. Considering how they acted during the episode, I definitely think they’ve been “together” in the interim since “The Hole in the Heart.”
And yes, I know they could have reached the goal of B and B being together in many ways, but I think they can definitely make this work.
This was a big disappointment for me…. the manner in which the pregnancy was handled.
While most of the fans are happy with the direction of Bones….. it was just a little over
the top.
A co worker is murdered
Brennan is hidden away in case she is next
She climbs into bed with her partner will be going out the next day to kill a killer.
She (Brennan) tells him he needs sleep…. but has a night of comfort sex.
Also, after she tells Booth she is pregnant.
She says and you are the father.
Well, who else could the father have been?
She implies she was sleeping around and others could have gotten her pregnant.
I guess the writers had a time table and were not able to work out better ending
for the season. Hope the details are worked out next season.
Okay question- So Stephen Nathan said that they were going in a direction no show had ever gone before- what was he eluding to? Unplanned pregnancies happen… was he hinting to something else? What did I miss?
I’m with Puckish here about wishing they’d just all left us hanging.
There’s obviously a lot of speculation that the writers will use what’s being called the “insemination loophole”–the possibility that Brennan was artificially inseminated with the sperm Booth donated in season four. This might be the case–I certainly wouldn’t put it past HH and company–which would explain Brennan’s need to explain that Booth was the father if in fact they did not have sex in the previous episode. But I think it’s safe to say that such a turn of events would be even harder to stomach. (Really, writers? For the last third of the season all we’ve seen are discussions between Brennan and Booth about “potentially” getting together, and sometime in the midst of all that soul searching–and the death of one of her interns–Brennan lights out for a fertility clinic to be inseminated without, we should assume, discussing her plans with anyone, especially Booth?)
Guess Booth’s “stuff” from Critic in the Cabernet was still viable. Flash-frozen baby Booth!
HATE IT.
I hated it 🙁
We’ve been waiting since forever to see these two BE TOGETHER…something that hadn’t managed up till now. ANd now they virtually go from almost nothing to being parents????
there was no natural development…the one thing we wanted to see most, those two being in a relationship and in love was denied us.
man, did they ruin this!
Regina, I feel EXACTLY the same way.
Well now the storyline “feels” a little different after reading Stephen’s interview with TVline…but I still feel a little cheated!
The first thing I thought….She used his little swimmers!!!
@Annie – I agree with you that it’s unlikely (but I won’t put it beyond the writers either) that Brennan would use Booth’s donated sperm from season 4, for all the reasons you state.
I don’t know how exactly Booth would respond but I think it wouldn’t be a pleasant surprise, since the sperm was given, then taken back, then granted again once he realized he may die from the brain tumor surgery. So… it would have been a huge surprise if Brennan didn’t discuss it with him again, prior to the insemination. Especially considering that Booth made it pretty clear that he was over Brennan (while he was with Hannah) and that he wanted Brennan just as a partner (post Hannah rejection), and I’m sure just-as-a-partner doesn’t indicate baby mama.
We netted out with Booth needing more time for his anger with relationships, with women and life in general to subside. I know that he’s been softening to the idea ever since they burned the slip of wish-date-paper, but still. Unless there has been some up close-and-personal time, I doubt the pregnancy news would be met with such joy. Actually, judging by the size of Booth’s smile and the general puppydog demeanor, I think the baby was made more, um, organically. And out of happiness found together.
If the writers go the route of insemination, perhaps an alternative may be a miscarriage followed by Booth comforting Brennan, followed by more courtship and trust-building, followed by committed relationship, marriage, baby. There would be severely unhappy fans if Bones as a series ended with Booth and Bones not together.
I mean, the order of things is a little messy, but theirs has been an extended 6 year courtship. I think it’s all right if the order is atypical. I think the writers will come up with a way to show a bit of the backstory next time, whether through flashbacks, or through Sweets. Or DUN DUN DUN – BOTH.
Right… I nearly forgot about Sweets. Remember how Sweets is used as an expository device for Booth and Brennan’s UST and OTP in like, every episode, even when Booth is seriously dating other people?
It would be cute if Booth and Brennan tried to keep their pregnancy a secret for a couple of episodes in Season 7 (OMG, Brennan came back from Guatemala PREGGERS! WHODUNIT? episode!), and then have Sweets ferret it out, through a series of flashbacks in an episode. I think that would be highly likely, and fully in character. Every squint and squintern could be in on figuring it out, recollecting the month between episode 21 and the finale, trying to figure out who the father could’ve been… and concluding that it could only be Booth. There could be lots of flashbacks of Booth looking longingly at Brennan again (yay!) and vice versa. And skulls decorated with flowers left on Brennan’s desk and gift-wrapped bullets left on Booth’s, and notes saying “if you like me, check box yes!”
And when everyone has a EUREKA moment, Caroline throws the cheries a non-alcoholic party with a side of I told you so, I knew it from that Christmas kiss and well-intentioned nagging. And then we can cut to B&B walking away, hand it hand, and having a sexy, romantic night at their place in lieu of us being voyeurs at their first time. (And of course, it will have to be 4:47am – that’s the only time sex happens for B&B.) Besides, I kinda don’t even want to see the first moment, it was all sweatshirts and fear and sadness and stress, and it couldn’t have been romantic or unhurried. I would’ve been stressed just watching it, wanting to tell them to cut it out and get to sleep, Booth has a sniper battle to the death with the Mummy the next morning!
In short, I want to see some kissing and candles and silk, damnit.
I probably should wait until the shock wears off before giving my full opinion. I’m definitely excited for the explanation but I’m worried at how a Booth/Brennan baby will affect the show. I mean that storyline works perfectly for Hodgins and Angela but for Booth and Bones? This episode was amazing, but Booth and Brennan were awkward, it wasn’t even that cutesy new relationship awkward either, it was a “hey we’re not giving up any details” awkward. Thank God for Max. I loved his glances and his pushing and prodding for Wanda and Buck to act like a couple. There’s no way there can’t be flashbacks, and I agree with those that question the timeline. I just hope this break brings back the spectacular writing of the writers cause with the exception of 3-4ish episodes, this season blew.
For me, this does not redeem the season, yes my shipper heart is doing a little dance, but I miss getting excited for another episode, never mind another season. Oh well, it is what it is. I now have other shows for the excitement of week after week 🙂
Still, wondering what S7 will bring
Guys, I think this little interview with Stephen Nathan brings a little clarity.
http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/05/20/bones-season-6-finale-pregnant/
“What was the time jump between Nigel-Murray’s death last week and this week when she told Booth that she was pregnant?
It’s probably at least a month.
Did they sleep together just that once, or have they been sleeping together since that night?
I think that’s up to every viewer. I have my little feeling about it, but I don’t want to impose my opinion on that on anyone.
After last week’s episode aired, some fans felt cheated that if there was a real love scene, we didn’t get to see it. Will we ever get to see that moment, or will we just move forward?
Well, we’ll now see them as a couple — whatever a couple means to Booth and Brennan. [Laughs] It will be that unique couple. It won’t be what you expect.
Another question fans had is the significance of 4:47, which we’ve seen on clocks in the season 4 finale, the season 5 finale, and last week’s episode.
It’s just a little consistency that we try to string through the series, just [to mark] important moments: 4:47 was when they slept together in the alternate reality, and 4:47 was when she walked into the bedroom last week. So, you know, I guess it’s our little smoke monster. [Laughs] It’s Bones‘ stab at being Lost.”
“So we wanted to avoid that part of the relationship where you first get together and the fresh glow of love, and you’re sharing dessert, and you’re overly polite. We didn’t want to do that.” ”
Honestly, I WOULD HAVE LIKED THAT PART! Thanks, writers for robbing me of endless cute moments in Season 7. The glow of wew relationships are so sweet to see onscreen!
“Booth and Brennan have disagreed about fundamentally everything — except each other — for six years. That will continue. Their characters will remain the same: Booth and Brennan will have completely different ways of dealing with the pregnancy, completely different ways of dealing with where their life goes from here. Booth is the marrying kind as we know, and Brennan is not. Where are they gonna live? How are they gonna raise the child? How are they gonna continue to catch murderers together when they have a baby hanging around? So all of these issues will be dealt with in the way that they’re always dealt with — from opposite sides.”
I loved loved loved this ending. Totally unexpected. The moment was beautiful. However, I do get the slightest feeling of being cheated that we didn’t get the sex scene or what happened after. But the mystery of it all is intriguing. I never expected the writers to go down the same storyline either – Parker was an accident and now this kid is too. I had a feeling that next season we would find out that Bones had been inseminated with Booth’s sperm circa Season 4 after realising she missed her chance with him – but I’m so glad Stephen Nathan confirmed they did sleep together. So excited for S7. I hate how it just went blank haha!
And this too, from TV Line. It answers a lot of questions!
http://www.tvline.com/2011/05/bones-finale-post-mortem-booth-brennan/
It’s clear that the 2 season old Booth donation wasn’t used.
TVLINE | First, please assure me that this isn’t going to be some kind of bait and switch. Brennan is really carrying Booth’s child, right?
Stephan Nathan: It was not a dream. There is no alternate reality. What you see is what you get. They are having a baby. She is pregnant with his child. She [slept with] him in the previous episode and this was the outcome.
SN: They are as much of a full-fledged couple as two unique and difficult people can be. Brennan is not a fan of marriage. Booth is somebody who’s always wanted to get married. These issues still remain. The tension that has existed in their relationship up to this point will continue.
TVLINE | Will they move in together?
SM: That will be addressed in Season 7. When we open in Season 7, it’s not Ozzie and Harriet. It’s not a perfect little domestic family situation. They haven’t figured out where they’re living, how they’re living and what their future is. They just know that they’re together.
TVLINE | How much time will have passed?
SN: That’s something we’re still deciding. We will probably pick up a couple of months down the line.
SN: The reality is, Booth has been with Brennan more than he ever was with [a real girlfriend like] Hannah.
AMEN!
SN: The biggest problem we faced going into Season 7 was how to get these two people together while keeping the integrity of Brennan and Booth’s characters in tact. By going this route, we didn’t have to have them go through the traditional love-dovey stage where everything was wonderful and they understood each other and they got past their differences.
Again, I really could have stood to see some of those lovey-dovey moments… letting them be carefree, in love, without all the anger and the burdens or guilt, just free to be in love, drink, go hunt down murderers holding hands and skipping without worrying about baby, future, moving in, etc… just for a FEW episodes. Would it have killed you, HH and Co.?
Woof!
Like I just wrote on another site, I really think they didn’t have sex during the last episode and Bones decided to have a baby and went to the fertility clinic to use Booth’s sample from 2 years ago. Maybe that is what she revealed to Angela last week also. In this theory, I just don’t understand why she wouldn’t have talked to Booth about it before going to the clinic. Maybe she intended to keep the father’s identity a secret since Booth was with Hannah…and the plan changed when Hannah left. Okay there’s a couple of blanks in that theory but it’s way more acceptable than to think they had a hidden relationship.
Anyway, I don’t think this episode was fit for a finale. Last week’s episode was way more interesting. It kinda fell flat for me. I hope they’ll have better scripts next year. Season 6 was almost a disaster.
Hey Julie,
The donated sperm was not used. This is what the producer says:
Stephan Nathan: It was not a dream. There is no alternate reality. What you see is what you get. They are having a baby. She is pregnant with his child. She [slept with] him in the previous episode and this was the outcome.
http://www.tvline.com/2011/05/bones-finale-post-mortem-booth-brennan/
BONES has become a Soap Opera…. for me the show is no longer
interesting. Now with all the love plots and babies the wit and science which
made Bones… a great show is no more.
The writing is now directed to 16 year old high school girls.
Just read the comments…..
Also, when Brennan told Booth he is the father……
I guess she was sleeping around with other men.
If Booth was the only male she was having sex with….
there would be no reason to make such a statement.
Yeah Puckish, I just saw that and I’m totally flabbergasted. Major fail in my opinion but well, it’s their show. I just don’t get the idea of this confort sex scene for those 2 characters. It’s out of character !!!
Julie,
I think fear and sadness makes for strange bedfellows. Maybe Booth and Brennan got it into their heads that Booth may die tomorrow, or that someone else might die the next day, given that Vincent died earlier that day. They felt afraid for themselves, and each other, and that fear propelled them into taking a chance they were so afraid of taking before.
Or…
They just cuddled and kissed that night (and Booth got plenty of sniper-killing energizing sleep) and the next night, they had celebratory sex! (of the accidentally baby making variety)
Puckish, your last comment made me smile. At this point, they could play their story in all kind of directions and try to make us digest it. I have an idea, why don’t they go live in that “yellow submarine” or whatever they called it from the first episode of Season 5 when there was a psychic ? LOL Anything is possible. Its become a practical joke.
I have to say, I loved this episode. I’ve watched the show since the start, like a lot of people here, and love it to bits. However, unlike more people here, I watch it for the science and learning about the skeletal system’s various intricacies, as well as the drama. I don’t mind the baby storyline, I am in two minds. I was happy and Booth and Brennans smiles made me smile, but I do think they jumped the proverbial gun. I have to say though… anyone given any thought about what ELSE could happen, other then them getting together and having a baby? Brennan could choose to abort the pregnancy, and Booth could have ethical stance against it? Brennan could loose the baby, and it could bring them closer together? Just things to consider…
beautiful.. wonderful.. funny.. light (so glad about this after last weeks ep).. the whole thing with her dropping hints .. hilarious.. those kids in the bowling alley.. well hey, they were just like normal kids-horrible hahaha! I’ve had 3 birthday brats myself.. so… yeah.. the birth scene.. wonderful – I so wanted Hodgins to faint in the middle of it all (somethign my husband was very adept at by son #3) and then the confession to Booth on the sidewalk and his face! OMG.. I’m sure a million women started weeping at the exact moment he smiled… apart from me who jumped out of my seat and screamed about time… well I’m weird like that. All in all… a big YAY from me. Oh and Hart Hanson – I could kiss you right now…. you sneaky bugger you!
“Maybe Booth and Brennan got it into their heads that Booth may die tomorrow, or that someone else might die the next day, given that Vincent died earlier that day. They felt afraid for themselves, and each other, and that fear propelled them into taking a chance they were so afraid of taking before.”
Spun this way, I can almost accept what an incredible disappointment this season finale was. (Which is probably good for my health–several hours after it aired I find myself still outraged by the sheer stupidity of it all.) But the writers didn’t do any of the heavily lifting. While audiences should be expected–nay, forced–into making a few deductive leaps (see, “you’re the father,” above), they shouldn’t be expected to try to make sense of such a mess. I can accept that things take place off screen that I don’t see, but in order for a show to succeed those things can’t be fundamental to plausible character development.
I can’t agree more that the decision to skip the first few months of Booth and Brennan’s relationship is a huge mistake, whether that relationship began immediately after VNM’s death or in the moments after Brennan told Booth she was pregnant. I don’t think for a minute that it would have made sense for either of them to begin behaving “politely” toward one another, as Nathan suggests they would’ve been forced to do. They’ve known and worked with one another for SIX YEARS! And Nathan seems to be banking on the fact that the show can remain the same ol’ same ol’ while the two leads have a baby.
As I suggested above, the Hannah story arc this season was awful, not because it was such a terrible idea to see Booth with someone else, but because the writers simply didn’t make the story work. Poor Hannah was a cardboard cutout and neither Booth nor Bones behaved in a way that made sense. What we now know took place in the penultimate episode didn’t either.
I agree, I don’t think Booth and Brennan would have behaved politely to each other, maybe just lovingly and sweetly.
I think the fear as incentive is real, and also, if they think everyone’s lives are in jeopardy, they don’t want things to go unexpressed, just because of pride. As in, you might die tomorrow, I’m not going to take my chances by not showing you. I might as well, I may never get the chance again. Something major had to happen in order to motivate two damaged, rejected, and gun-shy lovers back in love synch, so that they are both free, emotionally, physically at the same time. Throwing them in mortal danger simply unites them.
I do agree though, that the writers are on the lazy side, taking credit for coincidences.
All things said though, I can’t help but keep re-watching Booth’s smile as the hope of a life with Brennan and their child dawns on him. It’s great to see him happy again, his face brightening, eyebrows lifting, full of joy and hope. It reminds me of his smile in his coma, when his deepest desire is to have a family with Brennan.

My immediate thoughts as posted on Tumblr yesrerday –
in tears. and these are not tears of happiness. i am devastated. it’s like bad fan fiction. completely contrived.
– booth is far too romantic to take advantage of that situation.
– even if brennan wanted to have sex, i can’t see booth agreeing at that moment.
– is it not possible for two people to comfort each other without sex?
– brennan is too intelligent and logical to fail to use protection
– if they decided not to use protection – impulsive decision when emotional. lame.
– we miss little steps along the way eg. beginning a relationship, first date etc
it does not let their relationship develop one step at a time.
– brennan could chalk it up to a ‘one time thing’ that was due to being emotional.
– if it’s only cause ED is pregnant, it just shows it is too soon. if that’s the reason.
Booth: And before you know it, BANG! Mama Bones!
Brennan: That’s not how it happens, Booth.
Booth: I think that’s how it works.
So it was not that unexpected after all….
At first, I, too, was disappointed about letting fans out of, well, mostly everything . But after some time I made peace with it. Come on, it’s Booth and Brennan we are talking about. It would have probably destroyed the whole chemistry to get all cheesy and romantic. What I have always loved about their relationship is that it has been very romantic without being too obvious. I mean they have never had to actually SAY things because their acts and their attitude towards each other have always proved that they have feelings for each other. (OK, I do not say that I would not be happy to see some flashbacks of a certain night…)
I am actually looking forward to season 7 because I am sure that the writers will not make them a smug, happy couple with a kid. Which would be really boring in my opinion.
Let me just say wow. I could not stop smiling at the end of the episode. I think this is going to make Season Seven awesome. I can not wait to see how b and b deal with this. Booth’s smile when she told him made me almost cry. This summer is going to be the worst waiting for season seven.
I had that ending spoiled (grr), but when it happened, it was still a surprise. My first thought was MIND BLOWN. But then I was like WHY DIDN’T WE GET TO SEE A REAL KISS BETWEEN THESE TWO
fans bones might be pregnant, but booth will not be the dad, thats the way they do on a soap opera.
I totally agree with the article! I’m so happy but also very scared!
The episode was great… and the finale was mindblowing
But I feel like something is wrong there. I wanted B&B to get together, but not like that, with a baby between them. It’s just hapenning too fast.
We barely had shipper scenes all those years and now we have too much.
So I really think some flashbacks of B&B starting their relationship could help.
Whatever happens, Season 7 is gonna be very interesting!
“So all of these issues will be dealt with in the way that they’re always dealt with — from opposite sides.”
And like always Brennan will end up agreeing with Booth….
One of the hot topics on this show was the difference between sex and making love, a difference Brennan didn’t know, and we still don’t know how she feels about that…
And where is the “flash of light” where Booth was supposed to acknowledge his part in his failed relationships???
I loved the episode and I loved the ending! Booth’s smile at the end was absolutely perfect! I’m not going to lie and say I wouldn’t have enjoyed seeing some kissing and loving, but I am very happy with how it played out. I know Booth and Brennan were working their way towards each other but with these two we could have been old and gray before Booth got over his anger and Brennan lost her imperviousness. This may just be the proverbial kick in the butt they needed, and it opens up so many great stories to explore in their relationship next season.
Also, while I would like to see everyone’s reactions to first hearing the news, realistically I don’t expect it, I really don’t see them doing flashbacks. I also loved the whole Hodgela storyline and Wendall was awesome! I loved that they put Vincent in the baby’s name, so sweet. In summary, I am very happy with where things are and can’t wait for season 7.
I loved the whole show. I can’t wait for next season. I would love to see a Brennan/Booth baby, how cute would that be.
Ok not gonna lie, I was extremely excited about the season finale. Bones does what it does best, it made me laugh, cry & squeal with enjoyment. I have faith in the writers that they will make this work.
First: I love it when Max shows up. Max knows there is something going on between them. You could tell from the first glance. I know he’s going to be geniunely happy for them.
Hodgins & Angela crack me up. Seeing Angela in labor was funny, especially when she grabbed Hodgins’ chest hair. They are going to be quirky parents, it’ll be good to watch.
Booth & Brennan: yes I will admit, I screamed like a little girl. Yes I am happy with the route they have taken. Do I feel cheated that we didn’t get to see the whole lovey dovey part, not really. It will give us a chance to see how they are going to be as a real couple, with real issues. I am looking forward to see how they will be. But I really want to see Parker’s reaction.
Bring on season 7!
Has anyone considered that instead of this being a natural conception that maybe Brennan used “the stuff” Booth donated to be artificially inseminated?
fans, bones paid the monthly charge at the fertilty bank, thats how she pregnant with booth baby.fans, did you ever see booth and hannah have a normal sex scene?are was we just too offended to pick-up on the clues? the show is call bones, and start of s7,bones will be in guatelma, and for booth he will be talking to sweets about bones and the baby bank donations.
Wow, that was…horrid. The worst possible resolution out of all the worst case scenarios. Here we have two people I hardly recognize, who have shown zero romantic feelings, passion, or tenderness for an entire season suddenly having a baby after a night of emotionally distraught comfort sex? I cannot be happy for these two strangers having a baby together. How can they be good parents when they are so disconnected from each other that Booth doesn’t even know for sure he’s the father of the baby until Brennan tells him? Where is the Booth of old who was like a Pit Bull around any and all of Brennan’s potential lovers? For him to assume she MIGHT have other lovers is a sad commentary on what they have become.
How is this drivel, this weak tea, these crumbs of a once great romance a good thing? As Sarah pointed out, Hodgela have no trouble being romantic and emotional. The things they said to each other in the delivery room! Soooo lovely. Juxtaposed with B&B and what they have been reduced to it’s just sad and depressing. Booth now has no choice but to ‘choose’ Brennan and Brennan is clinging to the crumbs, the detritus of what they once had together. Saaaaaaaaad.
“But I can’t help feeling bummed that where there was room for a subtle romantic relationship to develop into more physicality with flirting and dates and all of that, what WE got to see (so far) was a night of comfort and a kiss on the cheek at a bowling alley.”
this is exactly my issue. I feel cheated.
This ending was foreshadowed for some time and I am delighted it went through this way. My fear is that other foreshadowing is predictive of the trajectory of the story – in that they will become a tight happy family that neither had, but then in a burst of heroism, Booth will be killed and the last episodes of Bones ever will involve Brennan keeping her promise to him to visit his grave.
The person who said all the previous seasons were their courtship has it. They truly loved each other all through and it meant so much to them they could not risk the last bit – Booth was trying to convince himself he was over Brennan with Hannah but we all knew it was false and she wouldnt last. It was just terrible watching it. He really tried to create what was supposed to be a love story but he already had that with Bones.
There are plenty of lazy writer examples throughout this season, but once they jettisoned the Hannah arc and introduced the sniper things started to pick up. The people that didnt believe B&B slept together that night have perhaps never experienced a lengthy relationship where there is a bond and sexual tension, as can happen in many work situations. And yes, you can get pregnant with just once, and yes, there are commercially available tests that show pregnancy after only 5 days. And real life never makes sense totally and is filled with coincidences and contradictions, especially when it comes to who a person loves and how their relationship forms or even exists. I am relieved they finally committed to B&B and am looking forward to the next season. Hopefully they will let them marry and borrow from the classic “I love Lucy” playbook for some situations, and create some new ones that merge B&B personalities. I think it would be a lot of fun to watch! She should have twins. Or have the baby (ies?) at a wedding – Just dont kill one of them off.
Yeah well, the courtship was not only interrupted it was completely derailed and it never got back on track.. Sadly, it never got back to where it was before and from comments from the PTB they don’t feel like they NEED to go back. Everything is fine, from their pov and a goodly portion of the fanbase. Well, you guys can have it.
In trying to determine why this finale did not satisfy this long time shipper, I think you hit the nail on the head. All the romantic moments belong to Hodgela….but even our non-tradition couple must have had some romantic moments, they have conceived a child, we are just not allowed to witness their emotional connection. I also feel that since SN has to go online to explain his plot, the storyline is not working. If they do not make B & B a couple, they still have them living in separate residences and at odds with each other, this long time fan will be Gone, baby, Gone.
Worse finale ever. Utterly fail. Total fail. Where is the romance?! Hart Hanson must not have a romantic bone in his body. Six years for this?? Ugh. I quit. I will watch no more.
@ sunny: You are exactly right. The chemistry between Booth and Brennan has been completely flat or non-existent all season. There has not been one moment in one episode this season where I felt any of the old chemistry. There has been hardly any attraction between them at all (particularly on Booth’s side).
Now they imagine this baby storyline is going to help them KEEP the tension that the show has always had?! Oh, I agree the show has always had tension, unfortunately Season 6 tension was awkward and uncomfortable. They never got back to the fun UST the show was centered around. So I can only imagine that Season 7 is going to be awkward as well.
Instead of giving fans what they want–a courtship, actual ROMANCE–he gave us the most sterile, lazy plot device that exists. “Whoops! We’re pregnant!” Completely unsatisfying. Thanks for jerking us around.
Stunned and disappointed!! Those were the only words that came to mind when the season finale of BONES ended. After last week’s episode I praised the writers for finally showing up this season, but this week I think they must have left town again. What an amateurish final dialogue between B&B!
Given that his show is ultimately about the relationship between B&B, I’d say it was a pathetic finale to a pathetic season. Marisa, can you PLEASE ask HH/SN why viewers haven’t been allowed to see one iota of a romance between B&B and yet we’re somehow supposed to be excited they are pregnant?!
I’m not talking PDA, nor am I talking a heavy duty sex scene. But what is the creative rationale for now allowing B&B — when they are alone together — to share a kiss, hold hands, or express anI love you? How are we supposed to be buy into a relationship that we don’t even see, and why aren’t they allowing us to see it?
@Tiffany–awkward, uncomfortable, too polite, lackluster, emotionless, sterile (thanks @Jennifer). Since they’ve ruled out a coma dream they’ve also ruled out us getting rid of these pod people. The people who are choosing to stick with Bones are also stuck with the least romantic pairing I’ve ever had the misfortune to invest my hear in. 🙁
fans, the lined is booth,I AM pregnant and you are the father in a dream I have.
I loved the finale last night. It was lots of fun. Always happy to see Max and loved the scenes between Hodgins and Angela. I cracked up when she grabbed his chest hair like a vice. Those two characters are so right on! The entire cast is great. And who doesn’t just love Sweets and Wendell. They are both great complements to the show.
I’m glad HH and crew decided to work the pregnancy into the show. It will be fun to watch the interaction between Brennan and Booth. I also love the fact that Brennan is starting to show some real feelings and not so cold like she used to be. She has evolved slowly and I give cudos to HH and Stephen Nathan for that. I mean, after all, Booth and Brennan are past their awkward 20s, so it was time to let them become full blown adults with mutual respect and love for one another. Now we can watch them grow and become much more interesting. The past is the past and lets move on. I’m sure HH can still find ways to tease us and make us hungry for more in the storylines.
I had to think about the shocked and sad look that Booth had in the first few seconds of Brennan’s announcement that she is pregnant. I was actually disappointed that she had to tell him it was his child. I thought to myself, “Goodness, does he think she has been sleeping around again?” Then I thought, hmmmmm, maybe the look was there because he was shocked first, then worried by what she was going to say next. Perhaps the writers put this look on Booth’s face to enhance the fact that when she said he is the father, Booth knew for the first time in 6 years that Brennan does love him. He knew she had not been with any other man and that this baby was “theirs;” theirs as a man and woman who truly love one another. It was great to watch.
HH and Stephen Nathan, you have a great crew of writers, etc. All of you work together so beautifully, so I know Season 7 is going to be awesome. I can hardly wait for the romance, humor, concern, mystery, and general good viewing to begin. Have a great hiatus and let the cameras roll again on a great show. I thank you for the wonderful entertainment you have provided us over the years and look forward to more great Bones episodes in the future..
“I just feel like at this point, B&B are getting the sloppy seconds of screen time as far as their own togetherness”. You and me both, after six season of waiting to see a romantic relationship develop between these two, we fast forward to baby? And I’m suppose to like it? I feel gypped. No new romance, no first kiss, no working through issues. Apparently just a lack of birth control between two people whose feeling I don’t even see a glimmer of any more.
“Do I still have faith that the writers will make THAT part of the B&B journey beautiful? Yes, yes, I do” I guess I just don’t have that faith. This seems more to me like just a big cop-out. Why bother figuring out all the steps between A and B and showing that to us when you can send them straight to Z.
All the rationalizing in the world isn’t going to make this right for me. I’m feeling like HH and Co, just flipped me the bird.
I felt like she was going to be pregnant. I know HH was looking to replace the unrequited sexual chemistry, but I feel like he replaced the sexual chemistry with a deep friendship. We saw Booth move on and was told that he truly loved Hannah and then asked her to marry him. He was then angry. He and Brennan get together by comfort sex and now she is pregnant. It just feels lik a cheat. It feels like to me that Booth is now happy that someone wants him and he is going to be a father. I just don’t feel the love, admiration and friendship, yes. But no romantic feelings. It is like two people in their 30’s who want to be in a relationship.
I hope they concentrate more on the cases next year. I would hope that we will actually hear about Love next year and not just that they are together because of the baby. I would hope that Brennan would not jump into marriage, especially since just a short time ago he was living with another woman and then he proposed. Brennan still feels like a rebound to me and a consolation prize. I guess I have to be shown differently.
I really don’t think HH can do romance and all the bull that they are talking in other interviews about wanting to be different by skipping over it is more of the fact they they just can’t do it right.. Six years has brought them past it.
I just would like to see some “real” feeling of love between them and not just obligation of having a child together and “partner” feelings. I need to see that Booth truly loves Brennan and that he is over Hannah. I fear hannah coming back next season and the soap opera to continue.
I think a hug in the final scene would have been better. The episode was just OK for me. I have never been a big fan of Bones finales and this was better than the last two but still not great for me. There have been several other shows with great season finales (some on just as long as Bones).
I am glad they are moving on with the show but I just wish it was a bit more romantic than comfort sex and baby. I will turn in next season but still DVR and watch later.
I have to add to all those that think that Brennan is still “cold”, I think that ED shows more warmth and love in her expressions than DB does in his. Booth just acts more brotherly to her to me. I think DB needs to work on that. I have felt the chemistry less and less since Season 4, and I think this season it is almost non-existent for Booth. It just seems like this has been all about Brennan showing she is worthy for her. Does Booth want Brennan or just someone who loves him. I need to see a mutual relationship and I hope they show that next season.
I’m so disappointed in the final minute of the show! The whole season overall was a let down (the last 3 episodes have been so much better, like the Bones of previous seasons) but for them to spring an unplanned pregnancy like that was just so dumb in my book! For them to have an oops baby is just so out of character. I’ve invested 6 years into this show & have waited for them to get together & for it to be a forced relationship is just so wrong. As a shipper I feel so robbed….no kiss, no romance, no dates, not even holding hands or a freakin guy hug…nothing….we go from the Hannah crap to angry Booth to oh yeah I’m pregnant & your the father….now WTH was THAT all about? She had to tell him he was the father? So has she been sleeping with more guys than him? Now I’ll never know if they really love each other or if they just had sex out of grief & made a baby….all those “eye sex” moments & Booth’s talk of breaking the law of physics, etc is all out the window now…..
They had unprotected sex in a time of grief & now they have to face the consequences of that night….because I’ve not been shown anything else…I am not even looking forward to season 7….I’m sure it will be another season of them not being together but having a baby….Booth can only be happy & loving with Hannah’s or Cam’s or Tessa’s….heaven forbid we see him & Bones actually show affection for each other….I’m still mad almost 18 hours later….
………….i still havent found the words to describe the emotional state that the season finale has put me in!!! I read some of the spoilers and about her declaring that she was pregnant at the end but i shook it off and didnt believe and was UTTERLY SURPRISED!! BTW i think it was totally neccessary for brennan to say that booth was the father, not bc it implies that she sleeps around but mostly bc it is a brennan-like thing to say.
I LOVED THE FINALE…and as fun as the summer will be…I CANT WAIT FOR IT TO BE OVER AND SEPTEMBER ALREADY!! FOX EXECS: you have an amazing show on your hands please dont screw it up…and to Hart Hanson: you always know how to make it just right <3
I’m confused that I was clearly watching a different show than all of you…I knew that she was pregnant almost from the beginning of the show, and that she and Booth were sleeping together. Max knew it to (the sleeping together part!)
I LOVED the ending, and I think her telling Booth that he was the father is just a classic case of Bones overstating the obvious. I think the shocked look on his face is just about the same as any other father who isn’t expecting that news.
As to courtship…have you all not been watching for the last 6 seasons? That HAS been their courtship!
I can’t help but remember x-Files season 7.
– scene indicates characters have slept together, but it’s never discussed (no flashbacks, etc )
– final scene of the season ends with lead female declaring pregnancy
– fans start trying to piece together timeline of how long they’ve been together in that way
– fans take sides on in vitro vs natural conception (ultimately natural wins)
Hmmmm
“I knew that she was pregnant almost from the beginning of the show, and that she and Booth were sleeping together…I LOVED the ending, and I think her telling Booth that he was the father is just a classic case of Bones overstating the obvious.”
I can’t for the life of me figure out whether Bones’ comment was supposed to be directed to Booth, which implies that he somehow didn’t know they’d been “together” since VNG’s death, or at the audience, whose intelligence Hart Hanson routinely insults.
So either 1) they’ve been “together” since VNM’s death, in which case Booth shouldn’t have looked so confused when Bones announced she was pregnant and then relieved only after she told him he was the father, 2) they haven’t been “together” and the baby was the product of just one night of comfort sex, but Booth somehow thinks there’s a possibility that Brennan’s been sleeping with someones else as well. Either way, it doesn’t really make sense, right?
Likewise, I’ll grant you that Bones has a penchant for overstating the obvious, but then why was she so coy with Angela last week? Typical Bones behavior dictates that she wouldn’t have said anything as euphemistic as “I got into bed with Booth” and a knowing smile. So either 1) Bones has become a different person since having sex with Booth, one who doesn’t need to explain everything, in which case what we saw in the season finale was just an instance of abysmal writing, or 2) Bones’ behavior with Angela last week was completely out of character.
My point here is that the writers could have made any of this, as contrived as I find it, work. (Just consider the totally plausible and tender ways in which Puckish has tried to fill in the blanks.) But they didn’t. They didn’t make me buy it.
@Annie
Right on all counts. The rationalizing that I have to do to make this somehow “work” strains credibility. I think the bottom line is, it’s just lazy storytelling.
Oh, love that you called little Michael Staccato Vincent Hodgins “Prince of the Lab”. Random thought, but hope he gets to meet his uncle Zack soon.
I really really did love the episode and the ending. Yeah, there’s a part of me that says that they’re rushing things and going too quickly and another part that is intensely irritated that we haven’t seen anything remotely lovey-dovey between them. I mean, Booth’s smile at the end was the most beautiful thing I’ve seen in a while, but could he have hugged her, kissed her, swung her around in a huge circle, held on to her and never let go, etc.?? Why did they have to go to black right at that moment, couldn’t they have given us a little something?
But, in the end, I think that they’re doing the right thing for B&B. Probably not what either of the characters would have chosen in their lives (the unexpected baby), but hey, let’s make the best of it. And they are together. I can’t wait to see them together. And I do agree with you as far as your point with Hodgela getting the romantic moments, although their romantic moments would just seem wrong for B&B. But I really think that the writers are going to need to work on bringing some of that in for next season. It’s fun to see them bickering and laughing, but I want to see them being their own kind of romantic.
This is my question: Lets say Booth and Brennan started a relationship since VNM’s death. Lets say it has been a month. Lets also say that this episode is how Booth and Brennan are as a couple. So what the hell did Booth want in the 100th episode? Sex? If nothing has changed except they now have sex, then ALL of the drama from the 100th episode through the Hannah fiasco was for what exactly?
I had to watch this episode again before commenting fully!!
I LOVED it, seriously, I am happier than I have been after a Bones episode in a long time. Everything worked for me! The undercover work was funny and made me laugh out loud several times. Angela grabbing Hodgins and him screaming like a girl serious left me in tears it was so funny! Wendell was great all around!
And while, I do wish the writers would have given us some more confirmation of this, I think B&B are a couple, you could see it in little moments throughout the show. When Brennan asked Booth who she would be undercover, he said girlfriend without hesitation and her reaction to him was fantastic, the little girly smile said it all. Then there was the kiss on the cheek in the bowling alley, yeah it was just a peck but the reactions around it spoke volumes. When Max said “you two could be more affectionate”, Booth’s smile was amazing and the way Brennan giggled after he kissed her on the cheek, oh, wonderful. And did you see him checking her out as she walked away, hello, I don’t think he did that just because they were undercover. He genuinely looked happy, for the first time in a long time!
I really think they have been romantically together for at least a month, though I hope it wasn’t comfort sex that started it all. Perhaps it was the realization that either of them could have died that day. Imagine, if VNM hadn’t been there, Booth might have handed the phone to Brennan and she would have been killed. Or if neither had been there, Booth could have picked it up himself and he would have been killed. I hope that is what drove them into each other arms, because in the end, what were they waiting for? They know they love each other and life is short. I think that is what they learned for VNM’s death.
And I think Booth’s shocked look before Brennan said “your the father” was probably just surprise, I mean, if you aren’t trying to get pregnant, it can be a shock! Heck, my husband and I were trying and we were still surprised. But the smile he gave was so pure and the Brennan’s relief and happiness was the same. I imagine the big hug and kiss came after the black screen. Would have been nice to see it but I can imagine it!!
As for working in Emily’s pregnancy, someone else said it and I agree, the first 5 seasons were their courtship!! I would have just like some kind of kiss or something… but hey, that is what we can look forward to in Season 7!! I doubt they will have domestic bliss, but isn’t that what made Bones fun before, their banter and fighting and then coming together in a resolution?? That is what we have been missing, so I think this will give us that side of the show back.
Can’t wait!! 😀
@Tiffany – I don’t think that this episode shows what they are like as a couple – just what they’re showing to the world at this point and what the writers are showing to us for drama. And I definitely don’t think that Booth wanted only sex in the 100th – he wanted a relationship – he wanted the full fairy tale “30, 40, 50 years”. Totally paraphrasing here, but remember in the elevator scene when Bones was talking about how good it would be if they had sex and Booth smiled and agreed but then said, what then?? Obviously he wants more than just that. I think that they needed to open up to each other and unfortunately it took VNMs death as a catalyst for them to do so.
Just my opinion!
@Annie – I don’t think she was being coy with Angela…after all, they kicked someone (was it Hodgens?) out of the room, so that Angela could get all the details – we just didn’t get to hear them!
And I do think it’s plausible to have Booth look confused after she said she was pregnant…particularly if they’ve only been together for a month! Lord, my husband and I were TRYING and he was completely befuddled at first when I told him that I was pregnant.
I don’t know, it just all seemed perfectly normal and Bones-like to me…nothing with Bones is going to be the lovey-dovey kind of stuff we got with Angela & Hodgens. It’s simply not part of Bones’ character, no matter how much she’s evolved. I think it’s far more in character to have the little knowing glances back and forth between B&B that we had all episode long…particularly since it’s so new for them to be “together” as a couple. They would both be kind of hyper-vigilant that it not affect their work.
I was blown away at the ending. I didn’t expect it. I would have liked to seen a kiss or at least one of thier lovely hugs. I’ll take Booths smile any day. Did anyone feel like Booth was saying something to Brennan when they turned to show Brennan smiling back at him? I felt like he was and he was still smiling. I loved it when Booth kissed her on the cheek and continued to look at her in a very happy way as she walked away. Then his expressen changed very quickly when he realized Max was looking at him. Max knew they were together as soon as he saw them at the diner. I think they just comforted each other after Brennan cried in his arms when she went to him in his bed. Then they made love every night after. They have been a couple in every way with out sex since sason 4. I’m looking foward to season 7, this summer will be a long one without my weekly Bones.
Hodgen & Angela were great. I laughed thru out the delivery. When Angela grabed Hodgens chest and he screamed as loud as she did was a hoot. I’m happy the baby was healthy in every way. It was so touching watching Mommy & Daddy waiting & hoping to hear that thier baby was not blind.
It was funny when Cam and Wendal were trying to figure out how to work Angela’s computer program out especialy after Cam’s comment that it wasn’t as hard as Angela made it out it to be. I’ve always thought that Wendal brings a richness to the show when he is the squint in the lab.
A great episode.
Why do people keep saying B&B have been together for a month? Angela was 8 months pregnant in *Signs in the Silence*, so she must have been further along in Hole in the Heart. I still say it’s only been a couple of weeks at most.
Ok, my last posting on this, but just rewatched and can not get over how much I love love love love love this show. And how happy I am that they are back in the past 3 episodes. I’ve never watched for the crime solving, although I enjoy that. I love the chemistry between the characters, all of them. And the last few episodes have been amazing. This episode made me cry, laugh, and cry some more. Can’t ask more from TV than to get 43 minutes to make you feel all of that.
Oh, and I’m not sure what the background staff of the show are called, but the editors and the people who pick the music for this show are amazing. The music in particular always hits me, they do such a great job of using the perfect songs in scenes.
Can’t wait for season 7. Now sure how I’ll get through the summer, but I have a feeling that I’ll need to do a little season 1-6 viewing marathon!
PS – hope the Jeffersonian has a great childcare facility!
I’d like to add my two cents about Michael Stacatto Vincent Hodgins birth.
Am I the only one who did not like any of these scenes? I apologize to the writers and actors and director, but it felt extremely… ridiculous. I don’t know if all that was supposed to be funny, or not, but it felt like they were going for it to be humorous, and it just felt…wrong. The being overdue, and false alarms, and the hospital scenes, and the video-calls… everything.
Same with the bowling alley scenes. At first the characters felt a bit okay, but with every scene they became more and more luke caricatures. And who made the decision to create the character “Buck”? If that was supposed to be on the line between hilarious and ridiculous, thenm for me it went over the line, and looked just plain… unlikeable. Didn’t like that one bit. Only Brennan’s “Wanda on the phone” moments and her discussion about shoes with the bowler were funny.
There were things I liked, like the music, and baby Michael wearing a hat (a gift from his grandad), and a few more things that I can’t remember anymore.
I would love to know if this was what the writers intended the episode to be like? This weird…thing. Was that intentional or was I the only one who felt like this about the episode? Do the writers really think that they’ve done a good job as writers if they just create a surprise scene that the shippers will like, and the rest of the episode can just be weak? I am the shipper-type, but when it comes to this show, there’s nothing to ship anymore. The writers may think so, and the viewers may tune in and prove their point to be correct, but I disagree on this. They really should be focusing on making the cases, and supporting character stories, and the science looking better, because the whole focus can’t be on BB, they should be in the center of the story, but the surrounding elements should be important too.
BB: It’s a little too convinient how in just a month BB went from just okay to being together, and basically getting pregnant from one time (wonder how Hannah didn’t get pregnant, when she and Booth were at it all the time?). What goes on between BB might be just theirs, and I really am not interested in seeing their private or domestic moments, but there needs to be some indication that they have/are dealing with what they’ve been through. Not including that, and not hinting at that is a no-no.
I’m one of those, who after season 5 didn’t want to see BB hook-up. But once they took the show into that direction, they had no choice than to keep going. Before that, I wanted it badly, and if between the S4 finale and this epsiode there’d been only a few episodes that would deal with their different views and all, then I’d be saying different things. I’d loved them together, and starting a family, and everything that follows, but to me they missed their moment, and since I don’t believe in fate and second chances and that “that there are no singular moments…” then I haven’t been able to see the spark again, the writing killed it in my eyes. I know from comments that this is not the general opinion, but I won’t lie. “Bad” writing equals great performances from the actors – that’s the positive side of all this. 🙂
Reading these comments I am surprised, as everyone seems to think the episodce was funny, and emotional. I did not SEE that. I didn’t laugh (except two lines/scenes), I didn’t cry, I didn’t squee. I guess it’s just me. But sadly the episode made me feel… bleh.
I don’t think they are together yet.. They got carried away that night, but I don’t think that they are together yet.. it was certainly a step forward, but because it was such weird timing, they probably just left it at that.. and Bones being Bones, she needed some time to process or something like that..
What worries me is how they are gonna do season 7 now.. the show is on hiatus now, with ED getting more and more of a baby bump.. so when the show starts again.. time will have passed.. and Bones will already have a baby bump too..
Thoughts?
I personally LOVE this storyline as long as the writer and producers handle it in the right way for the characters and show, which I know they will. I hope this gives them a reason to bring back Booth’s grandfather, Hank. I loved that episode and their relationship.
@s
I felt the same way. It seems like they were trying for funny. Which I guess worked for some, but I like my funny to be clever and smart too. This was neither clever nor smart humor, this was just one cliche and caricature after another. And of course the obligatory scenario for the babies birth, total cliche. I could have slept through the whole birth sub-plot and been able to tell you exactly what happened. Maybe that’s part of my problem with this episode (besides, of course, the major fail, and yes I know, my opinion, of B&B) was everything from the birth to the case seemed to be a predictable cliche.
I”m thrilled!!! I kinda figured they would resort to this (ED being pregnant and all), but I thought they nonetheless handled it very nicely. It was positively surprised! 🙂 The only downside to this is that it would have been much better if B/B got together by themselves (in the emotional sense) without needing the “nudge” of a baby. That would make it mean so much more. Just my thoughts. However, it is absolutely great as it is. Can’t wait to see what the writers have planned for next season!! Very anxious to see a different side of B/B 🙂 🙂 🙂
I know a lot of people hated this season and were complaining about it, but I stuck it out, thinking it wasn’t so bad, and then last week’s episode was just incredible and then to end it with this utter failure is kind of depressing. This episode was horrible in every single way. It was trying to be funny, and it was not. The science/detective part of it was virtually nonexistent. There was no interaction between the “team”. And what is the most disappointing is that the years invested in watching this beautiful relationship blossom have come down to (a) not seeing any part of the consummation and (b) getting fed this junk about Brennan being pregnant. I’m sorry, it’s just all wrong. I was fine with the writers going at it a different way, not just having Booth and Brennan get together and then bam, having the series essentially end. I was completely up for the ride and for letting the fruition come about a differently. But really, what I don’t need to see is another birthing scene as a substitute for Booth and Brennan having “their moments” and then watching them change diapers together in a lame attempt to show the bond between a man and a woman. Booth and Brennan slept together–we saw NONE of it. After sleeping together I assume they did more than share a kiss on the cheek and we saw NONE of it. And now we’re apparently supposed to get satisfaction out of a baby that’s supposedly going to represent their love? BS. Angela’s pregnancy was perhaps the most tedious part of this entire season because every single pregnancy joke/cliche has already been done–and I guess here we go again. Perhaps I am also disappointed because Brennan is such an atypical female character. She isn’t like most women, feeling the need to be a mother. I appreciated that about her and it fit her character. Even when she decided to have a baby a number of seasons ago, it was very obvious that her rationale was anything but sentimental. I absolutely shudder at the thought of her now being turned into this woman who suddenly realizes “her calling.” After last week’s episode I was super excited about Bones and its trajectory. It looks like I’ll be spending the summer in dread. Thanks writers for stinking this one up so badly.
Just read an interview with exec producer Stephen Nathan (http://www.tvline.com/2011/05/bones-finale-post-mortem-booth-brennan/) and I’m in utter shock, especially with the following response and line of thinking:
TVLINE | What impact did Emily’s pregnancy have on this story? Would you have gone this route regardless?
Emily being pregnant certainly figured into it to a certain extent. But [series creator] Hart [Hanson] and I were leaning toward this independently of that. The biggest problem we faced going into Season 7 was how to get these two people together while keeping the integrity of Brennan and Booth’s characters in tact. By going this route, we didn’t have to have them go through the traditional love-dovey stage where everything was wonderful and they understood each other and they got past their differences. That’s never going to be the case. They now are together but are essentially the same exact characters. They’re going to disagree on everything they disagreed about before, including how to approach their lives together, religion, family and now how to approach having a child. So we lose nothing but gain a huge amount with the reality that they are now together sharing the biggest thing in their lives.
——————————————–
Dear Nathan, if you wanted to keep their integrity in tact, you wouldn’t have forced a pregnancy on a woman who has shown no inkling whatsoever of wanting to be pregnant for any typical reason that people usually have. Oh, and speaking of Booth’s integrity, since when is he the kind of person to sleep with someone and then do nothing but hold her hand or give her a kiss on the cheek. He seemed more excited after having dream sex with her last season, than he did after having real sex with her this season. As far as the lovey-dovey stage is concerned, I agree that there is absolutely no reason to have them act like 16-year-olds in love. So then why did you decide to treat them like hormonal 16-year-olds who forgot to use protection? And why is it that I get the feeling that while we won’t see them act lovey dovey about the relationship, they will be cooing all next season about the beauty of bringing life into this world? People have invested time in this show because Booth and Brennan have (well, had) sexual chemistry and a deep respect and obvious love for each other, which made the chemistry that much more palpable. I think most of us thought that the writers did this on purpose because it’s a tried and true formula that works every time. That has nothing to do with being lovey dovey, and is the complete opposite of “oops, I got pregnant after our one night stand so I’m going to expect you to tell me how much I’m now glowing.” Now that soap operas are being canceled in the daytime we’ve decided to move it to prime time? I agree that you’ve gained a huge amount…of bad will from the fans.
The case presentation in this episode was poor – if a chopped up corpse was in a closed building for ten days, the smell alone would have alerted people to it, and the flies and beetles would have been still there, not just maggots, although not as much flesh. And they didnt even flinch or grimace as they have in other situations when they bent close to it. A dead mouse in a wall can make a three story apartment smell for a long time.
Angela’s delivery scenes were played for laughs and that had to be expected.
I agree the costumes were hopelessly unflattering, but good looks you can’t hide in these people, and that is fun! ED’s baby bump and thickened waistline shows for at least the last two episodes, if not three. It will be interesting to see her for the next season!
I really would like to see B&B bond well through the season, and that everyone around them says Finally! and is supportive. I want a firm rejection of Hannah if and when she shows up again. And I want Brennan to stand firm with her, too. And Booth needs to actually CHOOSE brennan right in Hannah’s face. That would please me. And what about Pops? and Booth’s brother? and Max and Russ? Need their reactions. And the Cindy Lauper character needs to make a drive by with a knowing look. I just hope, as I said earlier, that they don’t kill off Booth at some point late in the season and have Brennan going to his grave like she promised, with scenes of her telling the little child(ren) about their brave father. And where has Parker been? All of these characters have to weigh in – brennan had Sully, and let him go off into the sunset – why is Booth’s affair with Hannah questioned? these things happen. I know plenty of people who marry after being jilted, or marry after a first marriage and it lasts just fine. The relationship built between B&B, including all the secrets shared and lifesaving moments bonded them closer than any of the respective boy/girlfriends, which is what I think we were supposed to ‘get” from the hannah thing too. I can see a lot of ways for this to be played out next season and I just hope they take the bonding road and not the constant conflict road. I hope they get married before the end of the season. And maybe put in some better cases too. Bones is not really a PDA character, even prior to this, but proprietory moves and things by Booth would be really sexy to see. I actually was relieved that they did make it Booth’s baby – otherwise it would have been just terrible. I am surprised how many people are disappointed, or surprised even, what with the news of ED’s pregnancy. I am glad they didnt choose to just hide it or send her off on a trip. can’t wait!
I didn’t lose faith when Brennan rejected Booth in season 5. I didn’t lose faith when Hannah came into the picture. Nor when she left. Who knew it would take Booth and Brennan having unprotected sex to make me lose faith in the trajectory of their relationship?
There is good news here, and it is that the writers could wrangle their way out of this stinky poo in various ways: It was a dream. It was a book written by Brennan. Booth really isn’t the father (I only say this because that line was fantastically absurd). It was achieved via artificial insemination. The pregnancy test was wrong. Brennan loses the baby. Brennan is just testing Booth. Brennan still doesn’t know how to tell a joke. Brennan is going into early menopause so her assumption is incorrect. The baby is born in the first episode of season 7 and ends up being an alien or a fire breathing dragon.
Seriously, guys. If next season I have to listen to Booth (or god please no, Brennan) wax poetic about the beauty of new life and how it’s an expression of their love for each other, I’m going to erase this show from my memory. And if you dare to give me another episode with a woman writhing in pain and then telling someone afterwards that the birth was the most spectacular experience ever, I’m going to suggest a change of career, because you’re not hacking it with this one. Get it together and fix this mess, since you’re the ones who got us into it.
“Brennan still doesn’t know how to tell a joke.”
That one really made me LOL 😀
I for one will ask for less alpha male Booth, and don’t want to see him being territorial, Brennan is not a territory nor an object but a free human being. And make Booth overcome his white knight syndrome the same way Brennan is asked to overcome her abandonment issues. Also make Brennan assert herself again, she way too passive and soft lately, and make her have a mind on her own again that will not change everytime Booth disagrees. JMO
Woo hoo I was right! I knew it since Booth said “You’ll see the baby and, BOOM! Mama Bones…” And that’s exactly what happened! Well, sort of 🙂
I don’t know why everyone is complaining that B&B never got to date; surely there relationship was past that? I always felt that towards the end, their level of intimacy was on par with a couple just without the sexual component; so when they finally did sleep together there wasn’t really that much of a change in their relationship…
Just my thoughts anyway… Am OVERJOYED that they are finally going to be a real couple, but why did they have to cut the final scene like that?? I wanted to throw my screen out the window!
I don’t think there will be flashbacks, I think the writers are trying to be very subtle about it. I suppose they didn’t want to throw their coupling in our faces too soon. But in season 7 I don’t want subtle! We have waited too long for that! Give me some hot B&B action!
The reason for the rushed B&B relationship at the end of the season is them breaking the curse that they created: That of ‘Pulling a Bones’.
As much as HH/SN were scared of the Moonlighting Curse, we see Andrew Marlowe of Castle fighting like hell to assure his fans he will not ‘Pull a Bones’.
HH/SN really had no idea on how to end the series until after ‘Blizzard’ aired. HH even did a live chat and discovered that people just didn’t care about the B&B relationship let alone them being trapped in an elevator.
I feel bad for all the people who are disappointed with the writing of the B&B relationship but, seriously, did you really expect HH/SN to write a great season finale and/or relationship after watching the last couple seasons? I went in with low expectations and knowing I would be underwhelmed. Surprisingly, I’m glad about the low expectations because I now just feel ‘whelmed’ about the episode.
I didn’t like the finale either, and I’m trying to come to grips with the fact that so many people loved it when I didn’t. I hope that those who are squeeing are enjoying their squee. I just can’t squee with you. For one thing, I can’t get excited about the fact that Booth could start a second career as a professional baby daddy. I love Parker, I really do, and I realize that Brennan was also a participant in the encounter, but Booth is the one who ALREADY has a child born out of wedlock. Does he honestly not remember that he’s seen this movie before, or does he apparently no longer care? If it’s the latter, then it makes his desire for marriage seem all the more ridiculous, unless TPTB seriously want me to believe that he meant that he’s always intended to marry a woman AFTER she becomes pregnant.
Lots of people will disagree, but I feel that putting B&B together in this way requires me as a viewer to completely ignore the fact that Parker exists. I have no problem with the Parker/Rebecca storyline because things happen in life. However, I do have a problem with the scenario repeating itself. Booth and Bones are supposedly smart people, and they both know how Parker came to be. Booth is the character who is Catholic and who talks about marriage and fidelity as being so important, yet he has no qualms about his children being created outside of that institution that he says he wants?
That doesn’t make sense for the way that the character has been written, and no, talking about it in September won’t work for me. Booth is supposedly “the marrying kind,” and if that’s true, creation of children within the institution should matter and be part of his thought process. It’s difficult to tell me on one hand that marriage is VITALLY important to Booth, and then portray him as not really carrying one way or another if he creates children inside of the institution or outside of it.
*It’s difficult to tell me on one hand that marriage is VITALLY important to Booth, and then portray him as not really carrying one way or another if he creates children inside of the institution or outside of it.
Should read:
It’s difficult to tell me on one hand that marriage is VITALLY important to Booth, and then portray him as not really caring one way or another if he creates children inside of the institution or outside of it.”
I have rewatched the ending about 10 times and I can’t figure out why Booth only reacts happily after Brennan points out that he’s the father–and why did she feel the need to point that out anyway? There were so many ways to say it and get the point across, e.g., “you’re going to be a father again [out of wedlock, har har],” or “I’m so glad you’re happy.” “You’re the father” is something you say to a guy who was drunk when the deed happened, or who is one of three other men you’ve been sleeping with. I could be reading too much into this but for a show that requires people to read between the lines so much, I don’t understand why the “you’re the father” needed to be hammered home. I mean, wouldn’t we assume he was the father if he simply seemed happy? Something is very off about this…
FOR JK
I agree with you about the You are the father…. Maybe she was sleeping
around with other men besides Booth.
Remember that Walter from The Finder wanted to have sex with her and
Booth told him. Find the map and maybe your got a chance….
Well, Walter did find the map and a old medal for Brennan. Maybe he
got the chance……and did it.
Bones (writing staff) has gone down hill…. I read that so people feel it has developed
into a SOAP OPERA….. I agree it is a shadow of its former self.
Here’s a funny take on the Booth character and the shows storylines (I’m not saying this isn’t exactly what will happen. That this wasn’t the plan from day 1.)
Booth’s ‘thing’ is PROPOSING …to women, who don’t want to marry him for whatever reasons – too soon, too early in a relationship, not the marrying kind, not because of a baby…
He came back from war around a decade ago (in SHOW time), and had trouble adjusting to normal life again – gambling, and so on. And then he finds out he’s gonna be a daddy, and he wants to do what he thinks is the right thing – he proposes. That’s was what happened with Rebecca and Parker.
Some time passes and some things happen.
Then the detour – he once again returns from a war zone, and jumps into a relationship, to prove something to himself (cough cough), and once again he proposes, because “i’m just a poor boy, no body loves me. but I wanna be married, and have a family, and all that…” Once again he hears a *no*.
And now I get to the point – once again he finds out he’s gonna be a daddy, early in a relationship (let’s forget for a moment ‘but they’ve been in a relationship for 7 years…’) so once again he entertains the idea of proposing. But oh, this time it’s gonna end differently. Because everything happens eventually, and theyre going for a different outcome. Yes, I’m pretty certain this is how S7 (and if they’ll get a S8) will turn out.
If they want me to read between the lines and look for things unsaid, then here’s what I see in their storytelling:
Booth is the definiton of insanity in this story. He is the one, who keeps doing the same things, the same mistakes over and over again, expecting a different result, and doesn’t seem to learn from the earlier ones. Why? If the writers would invest some time and effort in showing that side of the story, my opinion of the character and the story might change, but I doubt. I have not enjoyed the exploration of the characters that they’ve done.
The thing about B/B relationship is that for a while now it hasn’t felt to me like give & take, it’s pretty much one sided. And it’s surprising to read how many fans see something completely different on screen.
And final thing – I am waiting for the series finale to air to see if I’ve been right all along. And that their story is in no way original or new. And for them to prove that they’ve used every single storyline that I don’t want to see in the shows I watch.
Also.. Anyone remember a fictional character from a TV show, who was married three times and had two children with different women, the second being a surprise pregnancy, and who only got together with his ‘the one’ like 9 years after he started ‘dating’ her? replace marriage with proposals, and you get Booth’s story, don’t you? I did not enjoy that relationship, and that is
precicely why I don’t enjoy the current portrayal of B/B relationship.
@JK excellent point! I can’t figure out if that was spelled out for the audience (who get it all wrong, and can’t read between their lines. lol) or for Booth. Since HH has a habit of writing strange things from real life (his friends) into the show (like the sunglasses thing), I have a feeling this might be one of those.
Will Temperance ask for a prenuptial agreement? Her financial assests far exceed Booth’s.
why bother with s7/booth is sleeping with bones/this was handle so low class fans didnt get over this news/until they told us about a baby book, going make a game out of booth and bones/they are really turning fans away.
What M. @ 5:56 am said. Thanks for the humor in the explaining. I’m still smiling thinking about “Booth’s thing is proposing”. LOL!
First let me just get this out. Seriously when Brennan said that she was prego my roommate and I completely just screamed for like 5 minutes. Then after she said she was pregnant and then add that it his we couldn’t handle it. So many mixed emotions. Like others I was wondering what really happened the previous episode and really wanted to know, but looking back now, I’m happy the writers did what they did. Now back to the crime/investigation; for a long time I was thinking it was the kid because she was so obsessed with winning. Completely did see the guy behind the counter. Also I loved how when Brennan was undercover she was still almost Brennan to the point that the one chick said, “Its like you watch PBS on purpose.” Loved that. I am sort scared about next season because all I can see is something major happening that will not go in Brennan’s or Booth’s favor, but we will see.
I too must admit, I see very little hope for a happy partnership in season 7. Booth is going to want to get married, but if they do, the FBI will break them up. This ends the TV show. He will, at the very least, want them to move in together openly, again, easily discovered and the TV show ends. The next and possibly most hurtful thing that our hero will have to endure is that, neither he nor Brennan can publicly acknowledge how the pregnancy occurred, meaning she and he must tell everyone she used Booth’s donated specimen for this purpose, as any other public acknowledgment will end the TV show. We now have outlined 5 sides of the box that the writers must work in. The final side being that they have to “maintain the tension” and all the disagreements between Booth and Brennan. From what I see This rules out any type of an openly intimate relationship between them. The only “hope” I can see for the course of the show is that at best they can “secretly” live together by staying at each other’s apartments, which of course, could be a lot of fun to watch. Whether the HH and the writers will throw us this bone or not, (pun intended) is yet to be seen. I just hope that the whole season doesn’t turn into a season of despair for our hero and heroine.
Okay so, Booth and Brennan didn’t have to sleep together that night when VNM died. They could’ve discussed their relationship and gotten together after that. Booth and Brennan would not have done that. That would be too much emotion in one timeframe for Bones and Booth wouldn’t have taken advantage of her like that. Also, Booth and Brennan’s relationship has been building over the seasons. The build-up of their emotional relationship is much better than any physical contact that they could have shared.
