THE GLEE PROJECT: ‘Dance Ability’ Recap
July 11, 2011 by Haylee Fisher
Sunday night on THE GLEE PROJECT we learned which contestants would follow Finn in wearing a “Can’t Dance” t-shirt when the week’s theme was “Dance-ability.” Harry Shum, Jr., was the mentor for the homework assignment and can I just say I want that guy to choreograph my life?! Love him! What I didn’t love? The group number to “Hey Soul Sister.” I would be OK if I never heard that song again – I even skip it on my Warblers CD!
After picking Samuel as the winner, Harry announced the music video would be “Can’t Touch This” and Hannah’s face lit up. Did you know she fancies herself a rapper? And she pulls it off!
You know I love Samuel, but I was a little disappointed in him when he didn’t give Hannah credit during his freestyle portion of the song. He did use her rap catchphrase, after all. But for Alex to turn around and call him cocky? Pot calling the kettle black, much? And his attitude was out in full-force when Zach asked him to help with the choreography. Just because you find elaborate choreography easy, doesn’t mean you have to belittle the others who aren’t picking it up as fast. And now I’ll step off of my weekly “Alex’s Attitude” soapbox.
Surprisingly, Alex wasn’t the biggest diva of the week. That honor goes to Matheus who not only snapped at Damian, but also kept asking where his water was and messed with his mic a lot because he didn’t think it was on properly. Again, just because you’ve won two homework challenges, that doesn’t give you the right to be snippy.
And poor Cameron. He’s such a white-boy dancer. Those adorably awkward, unsure-of-himself dance moves work for him, though, and he really made me smile during the music video.
Speaking of the music video, did the auto-tune seem out in full-force this week? I realize it was a rap song, but good Lord, that was pretty much all I could concentrate on the whole song! Anyone else feel the same?
What did everyone think of Robert and Zach’s picks for the bottom three (Matheus, Alex, and McKynleigh)? I agree McKynleigh needs to bring out her personality more during the music videos, but I absolutely loved her last chance performance of Carrie Underwood’s “Last Name.” It was super fun and super sassy!
I felt second-hand embarrassment for Matheus during his last chance performance. Ryan had told him a few weeks ago to bring out the sexy, which Matheus took to mean, “put on a strip show.” And I didn’t think Jay Sean’s “Down” was a great pick for his voice. Overall, I would call that performance at hot mess.
Alex didn’t annoy me during his performance for Robert, Zach, and Ryan. He stood still on the stage and sang the bejesus out of Whitney Houston’s version of “I Will Always Love You.” His vulnerability while talking to Ryan endeared me to him (something I never thought I’d say, especially after his previous attitude problems!) and I hope he takes to heart Ryan’s advice to be humble.
After all of that, it really, really surprised me McKynleigh was the one to go. I thought she had the best last chance performance and had been improving every week. WTF, Ryan, Robert, and Zach?
Now I turn it over to you guys. What did you think of this week’s episode? Did anyone stand out to you during the music video, in his or her dance ability or positive attitude? Was McKynleigh the right choice to go home? (The right answer is no.) And will you be watching next week when Darren Criss makes his second appearance as a guest mentor? (The right answer is yes.)
Here’s this week’s music video in case you missed it or want to check it out again!

I wanted Matheus to go. Mckynleigh and Alex’s performances were amazing. I m over Matheus trying to be sexy. It comes off as creepy.
I think of the bottom 3 performances, Matheus’ was the worst. His vocals were horrible AND his performance was EXTREMELY uncomfortable to watch. I could tell Zach was getting uncomfortable too. Down really was NOT a good song for his vocals, but when you take into account the nasally-ness of his voice, really no song is. Alex surprised me. He actually sang and didn’t yell. I’m still not fond of his voice and I felt like he was kind of spaced out during the performance. McKynleigh, I think, gave the best one. It was a little cheesy and over-the-top in my opinion but it was fun and her vocals were amazing. I hate how Ryan led her on too… saying how he wanted a good country singer and all that. I also think it’s sad how she got so little screen time. I think this episode was the first episode where we saw her give a “behind-the-scenes” comment.
Not a Matheus fan. Alex needs to mature more and I’d rather it not be on my tv. I like Cameron, Marissa and Damien better than the others, but I’m not truly rooting for any of them. Lindsay has to go, but I’m tired of seeing all the girls go back to back. I think if Matheus was cut it would send a shock through the rest of the group who are getting comfortable that anyone can go at any time. I wonder if Matheus is getting sympathy praise for the little guy? Just sayin’, he doesn’t impress me much. Hannah is annoying and I don’t see her making the show. All of them are pretty annoying and really are under a lot of pressure which doesn’t bring out their best sides. I hate their sit and talk scenes because nobody looks good. If you aren’t featured in those, you’re more likely to be normal.
My favorite parts of the show are Zach (I remember how funny and silly he was from the Glee behind the scenes stuff with the cast in season 1) and also the finished music videos.
I LOVED DAMIAN IN THIS
and he was sooo cute talking about marissa i was cracking up
