SUBURGATORY Creator Emily Kapnek and COUGAR TOWN’s Dan Byrd Tease His Guest Spot
January 11, 2012 by Marisa Roffman
COUGAR TOWN is still off the air, but if you’ve been missing the cul-de-sac crew, you can catch series star Dan Byrd (who plays Travis on the show) making an appearance on tonight’s brand new episode of ABC’s SUBURGATORY.
According to SUBURGATORY creator Emily Kapnek, fitting Byrd into her freshman series was a no-brainer.
“I’m a huge fan of Dan Byrd,” she told reporters earlier this week. “I worked on ALIENS IN AMERICA, which was a show Dan was on — I was in the writers room. I had a pilot for NBC that Dan tested for. Interestingly enough, Bill Lawrence, in promoting COUGAR TOWN and wanting to keep it in the [public’s] eye, was like, ‘Let’s get one of our characters in!’ And he was like, ‘[Put him in] the background.’ And I was like, ‘The background? Let’s write a role for Dan Byrd!’ So we decided to make a meal of it.”
I talked with Byrd at COUGAR TOWN’s unofficial TCA party earlier this week, and he was equally enthused about his guest spot.
“I basically play a 21 JUMP STREET-esque character,” he teased. “I’m a cop going undercover in a high school who is trying to investigate athletes for illegal steroid use.”
And what’s a high school experience without some unrequited romantic angst? According to Byrd, “One of the characters gets kind of into me, but there’s no romance.”
Will you be tuning in for SUBURGATORY’s brand new episode tonight?
