About Last Night…HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, ALMOST HUMAN, SLEEPY HOLLOW, and More

Monday night TV!
Some really fun genre stuff, THE VOICE, and HIMYM. Let’s get to last night’s television…
HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER: The good news? We seem to be done with Sherri Shepperd on HIMYM. The bad news? We wasted an episode as Barney tried to PARENT TRAP his mother and (married-to-someone-else) father. More and more as this final season progresses, it feels like they’re being handcuffed by the “wedding weekend” format. I would mind if Robin and Barney got married ASAP and then the show was just free to be itself.
ALMOST HUMAN: When a show debuts fairly late into its production run, it often makes reporter-types a little wary when only the first episode is provided — especially when things are billed as a two-hour premiere event. After viewing last night’s episode, I’m kind of a little baffled, because “Skin” — despite being about sexbots, and seeming a little sketchy on paper — was arguably even better than the pilot.
The episode as a whole really, really worked for me, but what could potentially make this show really special was actually summed up for me in the car scene between Kennex and Dorian: the duo touched back on their earlier conversation about leaving a lasting memory post-death by discussing who is going to remember Dorian (Kennex’s “You’re a cop; people you helped will remember you” broke my heart a little bit.) and then Dorian effortlessly turned the conversation back to the dating profile he set up for Kennex and the fact that, um, Kennex needed to get some action based on D’s scan of his testicular area — I swear, Bad Robot shows make me write sentences I never thought I would need to… — and Dorian quasi-tried matchmaking Kennex with Stahl. The scene didn’t feel clunky at all as it went through so many different emotions and stages. It worked. The show is working for me.
SLEEPY HOLLOW: I. Love. This. Show. Legitimately everything is working for me right now. The reveal that Headless was Ichabod’s former BFF and Katrina’s ex-fiancee? It made so much that is grand and huge about the show equally small and personal, too. Ichabod was always desperate to get Katrina back, but now she’s vital to their cause. And the team of a dead man, time traveler, and a crazy person was so fun while it lasted. I kind of hope Andy comes back soon to fill out their team of misfits.
THE VOICE: Some really weird song choices. So unfortunate Jacquie did “Clarity” and no one mentioned Michelle Chamuel’s version last year. I don’t have any real sense of who will go home tonight, but it could be interesting.
Really bummed I didn’t get to CASTLE last night, but, alas, only so many hours in the day (and night). It’ll be up relatively soon on my list today.
