CLASH OF THE CHOIRS Gets It Right

Want to revitalize AMERICAN IDOL and make it a more interesting competition? Start making it about the singing again!! See AMERICAN IDOL producers spend months crossing the country looking for undiscovered talent and we are still left with contestants like Sanjaya. Because for American Idol it’s not all about the singing, it’s also about having the right look, being the right age, and having the right personality to sell yourself on TV – all of which are important to becoming a successful pop artist, true – but at the end of the day it comes down to the voice. If the voice is there, then perhaps everything else will follow.
The CLASH OF THE CHOIRS chorale directors had less than three weeks to find their talent and have them ready for a live audience on national TV. Over the past two night, viewers have been exposed to unbelievable talent, the likes of which we have never seen in a TV signing competition before. The CLASH OF THE CHOIRS soloists only have to worry about their God given talent, and not about looking the part or appealing to the teeny boopers that vote for you. And let me tell you, these people can sign!! I would be utterly shocked if a few record deals didn’t come out of this four night holiday show.
Listen, I know American Idol and Clash of the Choirs aren’t the same. And I’m not naive enough to think that American Idol could get along based on just the talent of the singers. But I gotta tell you, listening to these choirs and soloists perform last night and then again tonight…well, it’s been a nice treat for my ears.

I was expecting it to be more of a battle of the Christmas choirs… but it’s not! They sing really fun music!
Originally I expected this one to be a bum because American Idol’s reign over singing reality shows is quite terrible. I’m actually surprised at how much I liked it. And my cousin is a producer, so you all should watch!

*Confused* Aren’t we not supposed to be watching reality tv that is taking place of our scripted shows (ie Heroes and Chuck) in support of the writers?
Yeah I guess, but being a choral singer my whole life I opted to cheat and watch this four night show. If Leno and Conan can go back to work then I can watch reality TV for four nights.

Yes, we are. But my cousin is one of the producers on this show and I watch all her shows (even if they are really bad). I personally believe that boycotting reality shows won’t make much of an impact. Just wait, when American Idol premieres, there will be record numbers of fans watching. The writers’ strike won’t make a dent in the ratings.
I justify it with, “I don’t have a Nielson box!” But seriously, I have the most basic of basic cable (it costs $2.95 a month), and I only have so many options and this is the kind of thing I’d watch anyway … there we go, I feel fully rationalized!
Anyway, I caught my first ep of this last night too and was surprised by how much I LOVED it. I liked Team Bolton’s singing/song the best, and Team Shelton’s performance the best. I thought that Team Lachey was too heavy on the female vocals for that song, but his boy-band choreography was fun and funny. Meanwhile, I do not know why everyone was humping Patti LaBelle’s leg over her stupid choir, because I thought it sucked and was basically like a long solo of a girl screaming over people in the background saying oooo-oooo. Suck it, Team LaBelle!
We started watching the show because my partner’s friend is in Patty LaBelle’s choir. The show’s better than I was expecting but for god’s sakes, can we get rid of the “judging” panel? If I hear “you came out, you did your thing…support the troops” one more time I will puke. Seriously. Also, my partner (who’s a trained singer) is convinced Bolton and Lachey’s choirs used backing vocal tracks (pre-recorded) in their performance last night because “they way their bodies moved was not compatible with the sound being made” according to him. Hmmm, interesting…
