CASTLE Post-Mortem: Andrew Marlowe on the ‘In the Belly of the Beast’ Returns and Its Fallout
March 4, 2014 by Marisa Roffman
[This post contains spoilers for the CASTLE episode “In the Belly of the Beast.” If you have yet to watch the hour, please go do that before you read this story.]
CASTLE fans had not one, but two blasts from the past in tonight’s brand new episode, as Beckett’s undercover assignment brought her face-to-face with Vulcan Simmons (a man she first came in contact with during a season 3 episode that dealt with Johanna Beckett’s murder), and, ultimately, led Beckett to realize that Vulcan was just a frontman for Bracken.
But given those familiar faces (especially Jack Coleman’s Bracken, who has made multiple appearances on the show), the writers worked with ABC to keep the surprise intact.
“We felt there was enough to promo in the episode without having to play those cards,” CASTLE creator Andrew Marlowe explained. “And we liked the unexpected nature of it — and the surprise nature of it — for the fans. The fans will see their names in the credits and there’s no way to control that, but we didn’t want to play the result of the episode, we wanted to play the character [journey]. So we did our best to not have to play that card, and we thought there was enough in the setup and what was going on with [Beckett] to keep the audience engaged and hopefully get them to show up…I think it’s a great ride not knowing what’s coming next, and that’s a lot of fun.”
As for what’s next, Marlowe was coy about whether Beckett’s physical — and emotional — torture will have lasting impact.
“The answer to that is a little more complicated than just ‘yes’ or ‘no,'” Marlowe explained. “This story and what’s gone on is something we plan to revisit before the end of the season.”
But in what shape that story takes — and if Coleman might have a bigger presence the next go-round — that’s something Marlowe prefers to keep quiet for now.
“I’d rather keep that card close to my vest in how this is going to play out,” Marlowe acknowledged. “But what we have in mind will hopefully be interesting and surprising for the audience.”
Something Marlowe had no issues talking about? How incredible his cast and crew was in working to craft the episode.
“I think Stana [Katic (Beckett)] did a remarkable job,” he gushed. “It’s an incredible journey for an actor to take, to be able to play all of those colors with continuity and credibility all the way through, in what amounts to 42 minutes of storytelling. Which is very limited storytelling for the scope and scale of the episode. So kudos to her for really bringing her A-game.”
“And [director] Rob Bowman did a remarkable job giving it that feature film quality and atmosphere,” he continued. “I’m really proud of the whole team.”

Your are misding the point. Our disappointment with @abc_publicity is not lack of content in the promo’s but in the fact that ABC did not show ANY #Castle promo’s during the 2014 Oscar telecast. SHAME ON THEM!
The show is always interesting the cast very good and Katic is exceptional, the thing that angers fans is that ABC does not really promote the show and the way they have scheduled this years episodes is ridiculous. I know the Olympics were hard on timing, but now we have another two weeks to wait until the next show! While those of us who have watched the show since the beginning will no doubt clench our teeth and wait it out, this is no way to expand an audience! This is sad because I have no doubt that this is one of the best written ,directed and acted show on tv. as to this episode cudos all round, especially to Stana Katic. I am amazed at that woman’s range of acting. Comic or dark drama she can do it all!
When Vulcan Simmons voice came over the screen I recognized it right away! real surprise!
