JANE THE VIRGIN: Gina Rodriguez, Justin Baldoni, Brett Dier Discuss Jane’s Big Choice
November 17, 2014 by Danielle Turchiano
[Spoiler alert if you haven’t yet seen “Chapter Six” of JANE THE VIRGIN!]
So…that happened, are we right, JANE THE VIRGIN fans?
Only half a dozen episodes into JANE THE VIRGIN’s first season and already relationships have imploded. Jane (Gina Rodriguez) was engaged to Michael (Brett Dier), a patient man who even got on board with raising a child that wasn’t his after she was accidentally artificially inseminated, but feelings surfaced for Rafael (Justin Baldoni), the baby daddy. And rather than write those feelings off as “cold feet” regarding the wedding or hormones from the pregnancy, Jane decided to give into them and explore what they really mean.
As Rodriguez explained when I sat down with her on set: “Is it going to be the best thing? Maybe it will and maybe it won’t, but it’s going to be really nice for the audience to see Jane is not void of feeling everything, going through everything, and being like, ‘Well, eff it, I’m going to try it too; I’m going to go for it too. And why shouldn’t I?
“She has to go through it, and she has to take risks to see if what she chose is right. And maybe she’s going to regret it, as we all have, maybe she’s going to revisit it, maybe she’s going to shoot it down, but what’s wonderful about Jane is she’s very honest. So even if what she’s doing may not feel like the best thing or be the best thing, she’s not going to lead someone on, she’s not going to toy with someone’s emotions; she’s not that person.”
But let’s face it, the show itself is going to toy with fans’ emotions! As a play on a telenovela, Jane’s choice may prove to only be temporary. New complications — with Rafael’s work, with the pregnancy itself, with other family members pulling at each of them — will pop up that keep them from fully exploring what they could be as a couple. And of course, secrets continue to emerge about everyone, changing the way characters see each other, and the way the audience sees them.
I guess what we’re saying is don’t get too comfortable with this change!
“Rafael is a tricky character,” Baldoni said. “He’s complicated in that there’s so much happening to him…When he spends his time with Jane, that’s kind of his release. We all have this thing or this activity or this person in our life that allows us to just kind of be ourselves for a moment, and for Rafael, that’s Jane, which is why you’ll see him different than anywhere else when he’s with [her].”
“There’s a chemistry and attraction between Rafael and Jane that’s kind of undeniable but we don’t even know who Jane’s going to end up with!” he added.
And Dier wanted to add that he hopes fans will “give it time” before they declare a definitive team one way or the other. “Maybe until the end of the season even!” he said, alluding to just how much changes so quickly on this show.
“Jane and Michael are already in a terrible situation [but] he definitely tries to win her back. In his mind he knows that they’re soulmates; he knows they’re meant to be together,” Dier said. “He loves her; he would do anything for her. That’s definitely where Michael’s at. He’s found the one he wants to be with forever.”
