CONSTANTINE: Matt Ryan, Angélica Celaya, and Charles Halford Tease the Arrival of Jim Corrigan and Return of Papa Midnite
November 21, 2014 by Marisa Roffman
The CONSTANTINE crew will be introduced to a familiar face from the comics in this week’s brand new episode: Jim Corrigan. And, unfortunately for Jim, the initial interactions aren’t wildly positive.
“John and Jim cross paths on a case,” CONSTANTINE star Matt Ryan (John) teased to reporters on the show’s Atlanta set. “But what’s interesting is Jim is introduced to this world, which he doesn’t believe — he thinks, what the fuck is this supernatural stuff? There’s a great line where he says, how do you know this is real? What’s interesting about their relationship is they want the same thing, ultimately, but they’re coming at it from different angles, and they’re willing to sacrifice different parts of themselves. And ultimately, Corrigan wants justice, but that comes from a form of rage, a form of anger. With John, it’s complicated. There’s those things as well, but there’s a lot of other stuff as well. I think Jim’s world is very much based in the real world, and John, obviously, knows about the world beyond ours, so there’s other levels…and John uses his humor as a defense mechanism; he’s become good at hiding it. Whereas Corrigan, you can see more on the surface, he’s a little more scarred. But I think John’s problems are more deeper rooted…but he hides them well, I think.”
And because John doesn’t immediately click with Jim, Chas finds himself on guard around the newbie, too.
“He doesn’t like anyone messing with John,” Charles Halford (Chas) pointed out. “And in this week’s episode, obviously [Jim] comes in heavy and gets in the way of doing our job. So there’s an initial aversion to that. And he’s just so arrogant! It’s funny, because so is John, but for some reason, you pick your friends.”
As the boys are duking it out, Zed finds her footing in the team — and she teams up a bit with Jim.
“I think that’s when we first start to see Zed stand up [for herself] and she’s like, ‘I’ve got this. I’ve got this under control. We’re working as a team,'” Angélica Celaya (Zed) said. “John’s over there doing something…I’m dealing with a spirit here, and it’s a little bit of, yeah, it’s a ghost, yeah? It’s a little bit of ‘you simple human, you’ [when it comes to working with Jim].”
Also popping up (again) in this week’s episode? Papa Midnite.
“They’re like frenemies, uneasy allies,” Ryan allowed. “And they need each other, even though they don’t like working together. the one thing I say…I think there’s a line where I say, ‘You work in a very narrow framework’ with just voodoo. And John’s a street magician, who’ll use whatever he needs. And Papa doesn’t like that. There’s some interesting conflict between them. But they need each other as well. And they have a fundamental respect for each other’s magic, even though they kind of go at each other a bit.”
