TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY Season Finale Recap: ‘The Blood Line’

It’s over! Last night’s TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY brought the mystery of the Miracle to a close … kind of. As Gwen, Jack, and the rest of Team Torchwood looked for an end to the global crisis, they were met with subterfuge from the Families, some answers (finally) about the Miracle and its origin, and, with little fanfare, the comeback of death. Let’s recap…

Time flies! The season finale of TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY is this Friday, and while I’ll withhold judgment until the last episode airs, there are a lot of loose ends left to be tied up.
So in preparation for Friday, let’s take a look back at the first nine weeks of global immortality and see what’s left to answer…
TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY Recap: ‘The Gathering’

TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY began its penultimate episode by flashing forward two months, a reveal that cheapened last week’s cliffhanger dreadfully. We ended last week with Esther driving a wounded Jack away from a crime scene, repeating, “I don’t know what to do” over and over. Well, I guess the writers didn’t know what to do, either, since they time-jumped and wrote away the suspense with an off-handed remark about Gwen stepping in to get them out of the country. What could have been a defining plot point for Esther ended up as just another moment where she’s outshined by her teammates. She is, however, banking Jack’s blood in a mini-fridge, and if that turns out to be useful next week, I’ll give her some credit back.

TORCHWOOD gave us some answers last night, but it also brought some frustration and confusion. We’re hurtling toward the finale now — only two episodes left! — and as this episode drew to a close, we were no closer to reversing the Miracle or getting Gwen back to her cozy seaside life. So what did we learn?
The episode started with Olivia Colasanto delivering the entire Torchwood team to the Nevada home of her grandfather, Angelo. For an operation that was so important and secretive last week that she had to hold Rhys and Anwen hostage, she seems to be playing pretty fast and loose now. She brings everyone in to meet Angelo. Knowing that Angelo has managed to cheat death, Jack is expecting to see the young man he abandoned almost 100 years ago, so he’s surprised to see a man whose wrinkly, oxygen-masked face shows every one of his many, many years. We learn that Angelo dedicated his life to discovering Jack’s secret; his mantle is littered with photos of Jack snapped over the years.

We slowed down the pace for last night’s TORCHWOOD, telling two character-driven stories from two different periods of Jack’s life. In present-day, Gwen will stop at literally nothing to save Anwen (and Rhys and Mary) from their captors, even if that means sacrificing Jack. We spend most of their story in the car, as Gwen drives a tied-down Jack toward a rendezvous with some bad guys. It’s interspersed with flashbacks to 1927, where Jack is on a very different adventure with Angelo, a young Italian immigrant.
TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY Recap: ‘The Middle Man’

Friday’s tedious episode of TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY hit several speed bumps on the road to answers. Mostly providing follow-up to last week’s incendiary hour, “The Middle Men” gave up a few clues about the mystery, while primarily demonstrating some outrageously bad spy skills and wayward logic. Let’s recap.
We spent most of the episode stuck at the San Pedro Overflow Camp, which has now been revealed to Team Torchwood as a government-sanctioned concentration camp. Rex hatches an escape plan for himself: overtake a guard and steal his uniform. While that part of the plan works, his escape is thwarted when the rest of the soldiers get suspicious about the strange face in their buddy’s hat and jacket. Oh, Rex, if only you were up against Stormtroopers.

For the first half hour of last night’s TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY, I was frustrated. While I appreciate the show’s attention to detail, we never seem to get past the need for long expositional scenes. I get it—in a world where major domestic healthcare policies are being rewritten, there are a lot of logistics to be sorted through. But with Torchwood underground and learning about things via web hacking, television, and, apparently, WikiLeaks, it’s getting a little tedious.
TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY: ‘Escape to LA’

Friday’s episode of TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY had a lot of good spying … and a lot of bad spying. As the Torchwood team relocated from Washington to Los Angeles, they had to tie up loose ends and start fresh on the west coast. Unfortunately, the cross-country trip was mired in danger after Esther made some bad decisions, and it was one close call after another for the team.
We started the episode with Esther trying to visit her sister and nieces before leaving DC; unfortunately, her shut-in sister has locked herself and the girls inside of their boarded-up house. It’s bad news for Esther’s family, but it’s even worse news for Esther, who is unknowingly being tailed by PhiCorp henchmen. Bad guys follow the team to LA, who continue to traipse around the city not knowing they’re in the shadow of the enemy.
TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY Recap: ‘Dead of Night’

With the initial set-up complete, TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY was ready to get down to business in last night’s episode. From late-night break-ins to some seriously premium cable-grade sex, it was a busy evening for the Torchwood team.
Rex traced the CIA’s betrayal back to one guy: Friedkin (Wayne Knight). They corner him at home and learn that Friedkin is pretty much in the dark, too. He’s been paid off for years by an unknown entity that contacts him on a direct line with instructions. Rex confiscates the cell phone and makes a getaway with the help of the rest of the team; reenergized, he says, “Whoever made the miracle — now we’ve got contact.”

Now that was TORCHWOOD.
After spending week one in full-on set-up mode, the team was ready to get down to business in last night’s episode, “Rendition.” The hour brought scientific intrigue, pond-crossing thrills, and more hints about the nature of the Miracle. It also introduced some fancy new terminology to the TORCHWOOD vocabulary — we can recap the episode as we dissect this jargon.

Friday’s premiere of TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY involved intense, American-style action sequences, a pond-hopping chase to reunite old friends, and loads of exposition. (By my count, the word “Torchwood” was spoken 33 times.) For this, our first recap for the series, let’s organize our thoughts by character as we reflect on last night’s events…

Give Me My Remote got a sneak peek at the series premiere of TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY, and we have some thoughts (and scoop!) on the first season!
My favorite part about TORCHWOOD has always been its fearlessness. Russell T. Davies and his exceptional team of writers don’t allow themselves to be tied down by rules or risk, and MIRACLE DAY is no exception. When you hear the words that Oswald Danes (Bill Pullman) uses to confess his truly despicable crime, it’ll send chills up your spine. And when medical examiners try to identify the laws of the Miracle by pushing life to the limit with an explosion victim, you’ll be watching through the gaps of your fingers as they press against your scandalized eyes.

My relationship with Starz and its preview material for TORCHWOOD is beginning to get precarious. On the one hand, I will do anything to get my grubby little hands on more. On the other, we’re less than two weeks away from the premiere and these clips are now only serving to ratchet my anxious anticipation up to heights previously thought unreachable.
The newest featurette, a full eleven minutes of new footage and behind-the-scenes interviews, gives us even more teases about Miracle Day and the events that follow…

Starz released synopses of the first seven episodes of TORCHWOOD’s upcoming season this morning, which, of course, serve only to tantalize us further without giving away any major secrets. They do give some hints about the pacing of the season, the nature of the Miracle, and the depth of the conspiracy.
Summary of the summaries? It’s a lot bad news. (The writers of the individual episodes are listed in parentheses.)
