GLEE: “The First Time” – Discuss One of GLEE’s Best and Most “Controversial” Episodes Yet
November 8, 2011 by Kath Skerry
If you’re one of those people looking for a completely objective review of tonight’s episode of GLEE, then you’ve come to the wrong place. And no, I’m not going to apologize for getting completely wrapped up in the lives and stories of these fictional characters. Isn’t that what loving television is all about?
For an uneven and often frustrating as GLEE can be, when they deliver an episode like they did tonight with “The First Time”, it almost makes up for train wrecks like last week’s “Pot ‘O Gold”
Let’s just get this out of the way now so we can focus on other business – yes, my favorite television couple had sex tonight (or at least it was implied that they did, but more on that later.) and yes, this was a BIG reason why I enjoyed so much of tonight’s episode. Listen, I’m never going to hate an episode so largely focused on the romantic antics of Kurt and Blaine. But, I also feel the need to tell you that those boys weren’t the only reason I so enjoyed this week’s ep. Much of that credit goes to director Bradley Buecker who artfully directed tonight’s episode.
The creative choices that Buecker made when transitioning between the various storyarcs and the musical moments courtesy of ‘West Side Story’ really moved to push the episode forward. If someone were to tell me that moving forward all GLEE eps would have Bradley Buecker (or Eric Stoltz) at the helm, I was sleep just a bit easier.
Now I’m not going to rehash the whole episode because I’m pretty sure we’ve already covered this ep a lot earlier in the week (see: GLEE Teasers: “The First Time“), so here’s a bit of what worked and what didn’t for me in tonight’s episode.
Let’s talk about sex, baby!
GLEE Spoilers: “The First Time” Teasers

Earlier today Fox gave us a sneak peek at next Tuesday’s episode of GLEE. And what a week to get the episode early…
Honestly, I’m very happy to have this moment in time to share some episode teasers with you all, as I fear there might not be many of you left standing after “The First Time” airs.
There’s been a lot (and I mean a LOT) of build up within the GLEE fandom about this episode, and that’s always dangerous because reality (even fake reality) rarely ever lives up to expectations. But I will say that as a fellow GLEEk who was has been waiting for this ‘Election Day’ episode like the rest of you, I was left satisfied and smiling (yes, I know, that’s what she said…and Finn said and Blaine said…)
Before we get going, I must share the same disclaimer I share before all my GLEE teaser posts…
Dear fellow die-hard GLEEks, in the words of Quinn Fabray – this post is all about the teasin’ and not necessarily the pleasin’. While I hope to share a few tidbits that will get you more excited about next week’s episode I’m not about spoiling major plot points for you.
If you are the type of fan that is going to be annoyed with me for not spilling everything there is to know then it’s probably best that you NOT read this and just wait to watch the episode yourself on Tuesday.
On the other hand, if you are a fan that has a wavering line when it comes to what constitutes a spoiler, then you might want to stay away too as it’s not my intention to ruin the episode in any capacity for you.
Now that we have that settled, let’s get down to business.
GLEE Stumbles Over Its “Pot ‘O Gold”

And then they showed the promo for next week’s episode, “The First Time”.
The End.
I wish.
After what felt like the longest playoffs in baseball history, GLEE finally returned tonight with a new episode. Few were more excited than I was to head back to McKinley High, but I have to be honest and tell you that it wasn’t the homecoming I was hoping for.
There was much talk of Brittany’s Pot ‘o Gold, but this episode felt more like a pot luck supper. Random storylines thrown together to create a semblance of an episode without any thought to cohesiveness or theme.
Unless you’re new to GMMR or The TV Talk Podcast, you know where I usually fall out when it comes to GLEE. I forgive a lot in favor of the songs, snappy one liners and adorable singing boyfriends boys. Maybe my expectations were a bit too high after waiting so long for a new episode, or maybe the episode was just that much of a mess (and if you saw my Twitter stream blow-up during the episode, I think it’s the latter), but either way tonight’s episode stumbled all over the place and never really found its footing.
So what actually happened in tonight episode…
Brittany’s new foreign exchange housemate, Rory, is playing on our girl’s naivety (is that the right word) in order to get to her pot of gold. Santana’s not having it. After appealing to Santana’s ego, Mercedes convinces her to join Shelby’s rival choir. Santana eventually brings Brit along, leaving New Directions down three members and unable to qualify for Regionals (well assuming the 12 person minimum rule still hols true from last year, which we can’t assume as this is GLEE, so all bets are off when it comes to continuity). Quinn is trying to sabotage Shelby in a silly attempt to regain custody of Beth. Puck is a bit more sympathetic and really wants to play house with his adopted baby’s mama. Sue gets the funding for the musical pulled, but her new Congressional opponent – Burt Hummel – saves the day. Go Burt! You Matter! Finn still hates Blaine. Blaine is still wearing bowties. Artie is still waiting for the rest of the group to graduate so he has something to do on this show.
And that’s what you missed on GLEE.
Now on to what worked and what didn’t. (Emphasis on the “didn’t”).

Hey GMMRs and fellow StarKids, I’ve got some exciting news!
Later this week I’m heading out the Windy City to meet up with StarKid and get the scoop of the upcoming SPACE Tour.
I’ll be popping in to chat with the crazy talented cast and then sticking around to get a sneak peek at the show while they rehearse for their upcoming East Coast tour.
In the words of that crazy Canadian, Bryan Adams – ‘everything I do, I do it for YOU’ – so that means I want YOU to hit me back with questions YOU would ask if you were given the chance to sit across from Dylan, Brian, Jamie Lyn, Joey, Lauren, Meredith or Joe.
Make ’em good! (And be sure to include you NAME and CITY in the comments below.)
I hope you all have grabbed your SPACE Tour tickets. No doubt it’s going to be one hell of a show.
If you aren’t already a StarKid fan or maybe only know of them a little through the GLEE and/or Darren Criss fandom, then no time like the present to get to know why these performers have such passionate fans. Learn more about them here: Team StarKid Embarks on The SPACE Tour.
I’m so grateful to the members of StarKid for allowing me this great opportunity, one that I share with my fellow StarKid fans.
Let’s make these questions GREAT!

If you know how SuperMegaFoxyAwesomeHot Red Vines are. If you secretly want to grow up to be a Starship Ranger. If you’ve dreamed of doing the two-step with Voldemort, then I’m going to go out on a limb and say you are a StarKid.
Whether you first discovered StarKid through the Potter franchise, or got to know them courtesy of one of GLEE’s breakout stars, you know that these talented actors and musicians are truly part of a Cinderella story for the modern age.
StarKid first invaded the internet in July 2009 with A Very Potter Musical – a fan-made parody that premiered on YouTube and immediately went viral garnering nearly 100 million views. Filmed during a live performance through University of Michigan’s Basement Arts, the show was an instant hit with fans of the Harry Potter franchise. (And yes, that’s GLEE star Darren Criss as Harry ‘Freakin Potter)
