PRIVILEGED: All About a Brand New You

First of all, I hope you guys enjoyed our show last night (and what wasn’t to enjoy?), because in case you weren’t aware it was the season finale. And if you listen to the rumour mill it very well could have been the series finale. The show has been struggling in the ratings and has not yet been given a green light for season two. After such a fabulous episode as last night’s, this is even harder to believe. I was in love with it from start to finish, from Rose’s soul-searching to Sage’s turmoil to Megan actually working with the girls (!) and having her own drama to deal with. Some things must be discussed right away:
1. If the show does come back may I just say that I truly hope that Marco and his wedding planner Olivia (played hysterically by Kathy Griffin) team up and go into some sort of party planning/catering business together. She was fab last night, adding some big laughs. I’ve really missed seeing her (I know she has a reality show, but I’ve never really seen it) and thought she was perfectly suited for the Privileged world.
2. Was it just me or was Will missing a tooth in the breakup scene? I may have been hallucinating but it’s all I could focus on during one of the biggest scenes of the show.

PRIVILEGED: All About Betrayal

Hey Privileged fans – sorry this is a day late. When I sat down to watch it on the pvr the channel had become distorted – all pixilated and totally unwatchable. Has this ever happened to you guys? So annoying. [GMMR: Yes, that’s the same exact problem I’ve been having with my CW-HD channel as of late. So weird.] Anyhow, I managed to watch it last night, so here we go…
Poor Rose. She is clearly the one who most fit the “betrayed” category in Tuesday’s episode, to the point where she felt she couldn’t trust anyone anymore, and who could blame her? She was let down by almost everyone she’s closest with and found out she had a grandfather she didn’t know about just as he was dying. We also got an answer as to why Sage felt responsible for her parent’s death and as we all assumed it was not that she deliberately did anything, but rather because she inadvertently kept her mother on the phone causing them to miss their plane and catch the next one. While this is obviously not something that anyone could blame her for, it is easy to understand how Sage would carry guilt around for all those years.
Myles has passed away, but obviously this can’t be the end of the situation. I’m guessing that we’re in for a legal battle with Myles’ daughter (the basis of the suit is pretty weak – although that could just be the lawyer in me; on tv anything is possible). Anyhow Rose and Sage have forgiven and forgotten, and Rose has decided to show people that she’s strong and can take care of herself, so she’s moving out of the twins’ room into her own. How she could want to leave that room with the gorgeous wallpaper and bedspreads (I am fixated on the décor, sorry) is beyond me, but I’m sure the blue room down the hall will be just as beautiful. One last point about this storyline: the tearjerker moment for me was totally when Sage and Lauren were talking and Sage said she was sorry for all of the loss Lauren’s experienced in her life. Was that a beautiful moment or what?
SUPERNATURAL: Sex and Violence

Well, like the title says, this episode had some sex (go Sam – Dean’s not the only one who has a way with the ladies) and lots of violence. This was another really interesting and entertaining episode of SPN, and though the baddie of the week is gone, its effects are going to be felt for a long time by both Sam and Dean and by us fans. There were a couple of really interesting twists that I didn’t see coming at all, a murder scene that was the least graphic in the show’s history, yet was the hardest for me to deal with, and some set-up for what is shaping up to be an epic battle that will pit the Winchesters against one another towards the end of the season.
Dean and Sam are in town because of a string of domestic murders – husbands have been killing their wives in gruesome ways despite happy marriages. These were some pretty tough scenes to watch, but one in particular was so brutal I had to turn the sound down, and you couldn’t even see anything. I’ll get to that in a bit. After some research on the men involved, the brothers determine that they have all been frequenting the same strip club. Thanks to a quickly formed alliance with the (young, attractive, female) county coroner, they are also privy to information that shows a high level of a certain hormone was present in each of the men’s blood that can’t be explained. Sam concludes that they’re dealing with a siren, a figure of Greek mythology that would lure fishermen to the shores with her songs only to cause them to crash violently into the rocks.
PRIVILEGED: All About Confessions

Someone must have dumped a boatload of truth serum in the Palm Beach water supply, because truth and confessions were flying around town like it was going out of style. Things were sort of divided between the older crowd and the younger, so I’m going to split up the recap that way too. First I have to ask – when do Megan and the girls even work together anymore?? We haven’t really seen it at all lately (and yes, I noticed that Rose mentioned she read Backlash because Megan made her, but c’mon – Megan’s not getting paid to recommend books on occasion). Also, this will be the review that really pisses off Will fans, so be warned.
Last night was very sad for us Charlie fans – especially considering he finally grew a pair and told Megan how he really felt, stood up to Will and managed to be as charming as ever throughout. For now, Privileged is a Charlie-free zone as he is moving across the country to study marine biology at UCSD. I loved the joke that Megan couldn’t figure out the time zone thing and thought he’d be watching all of their favourite shows three hours ahead of her – pretty cute. We’ll get further into this in a bit…for now, onto the show:
Megan/Charlie/Will/Lilly
Well, Lilly was back at the hair salon with her “so bad it could be porn” acting. It hit me while watching this scene that this character could be so much better if say, Busy Phillips was playing her. Now there’s an actress who can do comedy very well and is woefully underused. Wouldn’t that have been a hoot? Anyway, I digress. Charlie convinces Lilly to take on a leadership role with watching out for her and Megan’s dad, which she appears to be doing. Good – now maybe Megan can get back to focusing on her job and her own life and the Smith family can sort of fade away. That also sums up Lilly’s contribution to the episode, so we can now forget about her until next week.
SUPERNATURAL: After School Special

I loved the episode Thursday night – it was a nice return to the brothers and their relationship to each other after a couple of episodes that were focused more on secondary characters. I knew I was going to love the episode once I saw the cold open; it was sooo Heathers, with the traumatizing chants and uber-violence. High school really is one of the most evil places, isn’t it? It totally makes sense that horrible supernatural things would go on there. At Truman High in Indiana, people have been committing horrible, violent crimes against their tormentors and then claiming to have been possessed after it’s over. And weren’t we all a little satisfied when the horrible bitchy girl got hers after the way she treated the girl who had just tried to reach out to her? Yes, I know that killing someone because they’re a bitch is wrong, but this is tv…c’mon; we’re allowed to enjoy things like that.
So we had two distinct storylines going on last night. In one, the boys are trying to deal with whatever is turning the kids at the high school into violent psychopaths (aside from teenage hormones), and in the other the boys are the students, because we’re seeing flashbacks to 1997 when they attended the very same school. I thought that the boys who played young Sam and Dean were fantastic. They looked too far apart in age, but it’s a minor point that I can live with (according to imdb, the actors are 11 years apart, which is about what it looked like).
Supernatural: Criss Angel is a Douche Bag

It’s finally here: the episode with the greatest title ever. I definitely thought that this installment of Supernatural was going to be non-stop laughs, like some previous comedy-based episodes of the show. There was definitely humour to be found, but it was also a pretty heavy episode too. To be honest, this is the second episode in a row that I’ve found to be just “meh”. Since the season overall has been so spectacular it’s bound to happen at some point and as I’ve said before, a “meh” episode of Supernatural is still a pretty good way to spend an hour.
We had another twist on the usual “Dean and Sam save the world from a supernatural being” as there was last week. This time there was a supernatural element, but the brothers didn’t do the saving. Oh, and Ruby is back and Sam is keeping some major secrets from Dean that will have a major impact on the direction of the show for the rest of the season.
PRIVILEGED: All About the Big Picture

First off, let me congratulate all you Americans on your new president –I snuck off with a few co-workers to watch the inauguration on t.v. yesterday and it was pretty great. And now, for those of you who were able to stop mainlining CNN and watch Privileged, lets get down to business!
There was lots of guy trouble this week – the twins, due to their (or should I say Sage’s) determination to be famous and the time it takes away from the guys who care about them. Megan, because her family is driving her crazy and she doesn’t want to see Will dragged into things any more than he has been. And Marco, who is finding himself missing Keith more and more as each day passes. All that, plus a shout-out to Troy Dyer and a zinger aimed at Miley Cyrus to boot!
Luis was not present in the episode except by phone, but it was clear that Sage was ignoring him in favour of her “career” as a would-be famous person. She and Rose have lots of events to go to, set up by their publicist, and as a result they’re both missing out on time with their boyfriends. Normally I would totally say that your career goals are important and you shouldn’t sacrifice them completely for a guy, but c’mon. When your goal is essentially to be on the cover of US Weekly, it’s not really a sacrifice. Rose, who has gone along with all of the fame-seeking mostly for Sage’s sake, is now finding that the career path is interfering with her and her own man, my favourite, Dave Franco (Zach). I know, I know…he mumbles and he’s awkward…but he’s just so adorable. When he smiles, I smile. And when he’s sad because Pete Wentz and Rose’s ex-douchebag Max are in a picture with her at a nightclub on display on Perez Hilton (ahhhh…I can’t tell you how many times that happened to me in high school), I’m sad for him.
SUPERNATURAL: Family Remains

This was an entertaining enough stand-alone episode but it’s not one that I think I’ll be watching much when I ultimately get the season four DVD set. As shocking/gross (in a good way) as it was, I didn’t really connect with it overall. I’ve been trying to put my finger on what my problem with it was, and I think it’s that we didn’t get much in the way of character development or a sense of moving the story forward at all. Not to say that every episode has to feature Castiel or epic revelations, but there wasn’t much interaction between the brothers – the focus was very much on the family at the center of the drama of the week. It sort of had that feeling you’d get when you’re watching your favourite sitcom and realize the whole episode is about the neighbour or coach and you realize you’re being acquainted with the new people because they are about to be spun off into their own show. Since I’m pretty sure we won’t be watching Family Remains: The Series next year, I’m not sure why the show took this turn.
That being said, they weren’t lazy with the twists and turns at all. Just when I thought my jaw had dropped as low as it could, another twist and/or disturbing visual would cause it to go down another notch. As deep as my love is for Supernatural, it doesn’t often have the intended effect of scaring the crap out of me, like a lot of people who watch the show. However, tonight they didn’t play fair – first they featured a scene with the urban legend that scared me most as a kid and then there was the ghost-that-wasn’t-a-ghost and her rat-eating, murderous ways.
SUPERNATURAL Spoilers: Could it Be True??

The following contains speculation on reported spoilers for upcoming episodes of SUPERNATURAL. You have been warned.
Hey Supernatural fans!! Our show returns tomorrow night with all new episodes after the (much too long!) break. In anticipation of that, I had to write about this nugget of major gossip that’s been floating around. Choose to read it or not (consider yourself spoiler-warned), but either way, come back on Friday to discuss tomorrow’s episode, which looks to be especially creepy!
Television gossip maven Kristin Dos Santos has blown the mind grapes (to quote Tracy of ’30 Rock’) of the collective Supernatural fandom by posting the most major possible spoiler in the show’s history and it’s causing quite a ruckus on the old interwebs. As I said, it’s only a possible spoiler, but Kristin’s pretty in-the-know, so who knows? It could be true. Anyhow, as Team GMMR’s resident Supernatural recapper, I had to share the news here, and discuss this possible turn of events with fellow fans, so if you don’t want to know, don’t read past the jump. But, if you do read, please please please share your thoughts in the comments section because I think y’all will definitely have some things to say…
PRIVILEGED: All About Tough Love

Yay! What a delightful episode! Aside from the return of my nemesis Lilly, this was a wonderful hour, showcasing what are becoming trademarks of this great new series: heart, charm, sharp dialogue and several laugh-out-loud moments. I’ve long thought that Privileged somewhat fills the void left on The CW by Gilmore Girls and while the shows are very different, they both make me happy in similar ways.
Megan is dealing with family drama now that Lilly is in jail and Will….oh Will. If you hadn’t done something so stupid I’d feel really badly for you right now. The girls meanwhile are busy trying to figure out their respective boyfriends. Sage wants to get Luis a present to show him how she feels (you could see that disaster coming a mile away) and Rose is trying to puzzle out the meaning of a poem given to her by her beau.
