COMMUNITY from NBC – First Look
May 4, 2009 by Kath Skerry
You had me at Joel McHale. THE SOUPster finally lands himself a network gig in COMMUNITY, a new comedy from NBC. There’s some really good buzz about this one….which we know of course means nothing. Ha! Is this something that grabs your interest?
From Emmy Award-winning directors Joe and Anthony Russo (”Arrested Development”) comes “Community,” a smart comedy series about higher education — and lower expectations. The student body at Greendale Community College is made up of high-school losers, newly divorced housewives, and old people who want to keep their minds active. Within these not-so-hallowed halls, “Community” focuses on a band of misfits, at the center of which is a fast-talkin’ lawyer whose degree has been revoked (Joel McHale, “The Soup”), who form a study group and end up learning a lot more about themselves than they do about their course work. In addition to McHale, the series also stars: Gillian Jacobs (”The Book of Daniel”); Yvette Nicole Brown (”Rules of Engagement”); Danny Pudi (”Greek”); Alison Brie (”Mad Men”); and comedy legend Chevy Chase (”Saturday Night Live”). “Community” is a Krasnoff Foster Entertainment, Harmonious Claptrap and Russo Brothers production in association with Sony Pictures Television and Universal Media Studios. Russ Krasnoff (”The Soloist”), Dan Harmon (”The Sarah Silverman Program”), Joe Russo (”Arrested Development”), Anthony Russo (”Arrested Development”) and Gary Foster (”The Soloist”) serve as executive producers. Joe and Anthony Russo directed the pilot that was written by Dan Harmon.
New comedy! A smart comedy about higher education…and lower expectations.

I’m in. I hope NBC uses this show correctly- it really could be a key part in turning things around.
I absolutely ADORE Joel McHale. I hope this show turns out to be as great as I’m hoping.
Love Love Love Joel McHale, and the featurette for COMMUNITY was great! Everyone who loves movies, TV, and comic chops will have to stick around for this one! I only hope that they can sustain the quality (and I hope they leak more before the show begins this fall)… Any chance Joel gets to stay on The Soup too? I will miss him there, but a half hour is not nearly enough. Bring on the fun!
I heart this show already. NBC seems to be stepping up their game, it is about time, they have been stuck in the past for too long.
I love it! I hope it reaches its full potential.
Like you, they had me at Joel McHale. But then through in John Oliver-Phew! I’m there!
LOVE JOEL. I’m excited for this one.
I am besides myself with excitement for this one. It looks great, Joel is finally getting a project that could push him into fame, Chevy Chase is due for a terrific role, and I am a big fan of Yvette Nicole Brown. She’s the actress you see in everything – commercials, guest spots on sitcoms, and she is absolutely hilarious. I’m rooting for her to gain the recognition she deserves. Check her out in The Office – Season 3 “The Return” where she plays Dwight’s co-worker at Staples. She had few lines, but stole each scene. Cannot wait for this show.
