THE GOLDBERGS is back for its third season, and the comedy is kicking things off in style: with a tribute to RISKY BUSINESS.
“I was obsessed with RISKY BUSINESS growing up; it was just one of those movies that I loved,” THE GOLDBERGS creator Adam F. Goldberg shared. “And we touched upon it in another episode in a prior season, but I wanted to do a big blowout. This [themed episode] started with a love of a movie. And now that we have AJ Michalka (Lainey) [full-time] on the show, I saw an opportunity of Beverly having a new kid to parent. [Lainey’s] parents [are] going away for the weekend, and Beverly is like, ‘I’m going to fix your life in three days,’ basically. And Lainey’s never had any support, so she’s taken by it, but then realizes, no way, it’s time to throw a RISKY BUSINESS party. And it gets out of control, and Beverly has to save the day.”
Tonight’s third season premiere also marks the second year the show has been a part of ABC’s stable Wednesday night block of comedy. (THE GOLDBERGS aired on Tuesdays for its first season.) And with that solid ground, Goldberg noted his goal is to keep the show consistent.

THE GOLDBERGS creative team is hard at work planning fun pop culture homages for its upcoming third season.
“The first episode is I’m doing like a big RISKY BUSINESS episode,” THE GOLDBERGS creator Adam F. Goldberg teased during the show’s Television Critics Association panel. “I kind of wanted to start with a big splash. So we’re crashing cars and we’re doing the whole thing. It’s going to be awesome.”
“It just has to happen kind of organically,” he continued. “We start with a story first. It’s not like I go, ‘I love SHORT CIRCUIT. I want to do an episode about it.’ We started talking about an episode where Murray and Adam are forced by mom to build a robot together, which is something that happened with me and my dad. And then that turned into a SHORT CIRCUIT episode….And I went online and I talked with a guy who built the robot, like a little version of it. So I bought that from him and…so it’s really kind of working from the story first.”

THE GOLDBERGS is tackling one of the biggest moments of the ’80s in tonight’s brand new episode: the wedding between Prince Charles and Lady Di.
“That was a huge deal growing up,” THE GOLDBERGS creator Adam F. Goldberg acknowledged. “My mom waited up until 4 in the morning to watch it. I remember that. Her and her friends were obsessed with it. Every writer, when I told them to come up with ideas over hiatus, every one wrote, ‘How about a Royal Wedding/Princess Di episode?'”
And so, in tonight’s episode, the Royal Wedding inspires Bev and Murray to look at their own wedding, and debate the merits of renewing their vows.

We’ve got well over a month before network shows return from their summer hiatus, but we’re just about reaching the point where decisions need to be made about catching up on shows that may have been missed (or initially passed over) last season in order to be current when things return.
And hey, there’s a lot of great TV on these days. Sometimes it’s hard to commit to a show until you’ve heard from enough people that it’s actually good/you know it will return for a second season. So, on that note, I do have a few suggestions for shows you should bump to the top of your list.
Last up? THE GOLDBERGS!

THE GOLDBERGS has established itself as one of the best shows on television, and tonight’s episode sounds like another good one: Adam tries to navigate whether guys and girls can be just friends, we get another glimpse at Big Tasty from Barry, and Erica tries to throw off Beverly’s smothering instincts.
I spoke with THE GOLDBERGS star Wendi McLendon-Covey (Beverly) about what’s to come on the comedy, getting to meet the real Beverly Goldberg, and more…

If you’ve seen promos for the new ABC comedy, THE GOLDBERGS, the family might seem a little extreme, but it’s coming from an authentic place: THE GOLDBERGS creator Adam Goldberg based the show on his real-life family.
