ALMOST HUMAN — the new futuristic cop drama from FRINGE boss J.H. Wyman and uber producer J.J. Abrams — is getting a big launch post-football on November 17th, but if you can’t wait until then, Fox and Hulu have released a snippet of the pilot online early.

These eight minutes aren’t actually the start of the pilot, but it does introduce you to a fair amount of characters in the world, including the first meeting of Karl Urban’s John Kennex and Michael Ealy’s Dorian.

ALMOST HUMAN is still nearly three weeks away from its two-night series premiere, but the show is already expanding its cast: a Fox rep confirms that John Larroquette will recur on the new drama.

Larroquette will play Nigel, who is described as “a genius roboticist who is sympathetic, highly intelligent and a bit broken.” No word yet on when he’ll make his ALMOST HUMAN debut.

ALMOST HUMAN’s two-night series premiere event kicks off Sunday, November 17th at 8 PM on Fox, followed by its time period premiere, Monday, November 18th at 8 PM.

We’re less than three weeks away from the debut of Fox’s new drama, ALMOST HUMAN (a “buddy-cop” show set 35 years in the future — where crime rates have risen and every cop is partnered with an android — from former FRINGE boss J.H. Wyman), and while we’ve given you an intro to Michael Ealy’s Dorian, it’s about time to meet some of the people who will be helping to solve these futuristic crimes, don’t you think?

“Richard Paul lives on the edge,” ALMOST HUMAN star Michael Irby previews of his character in the exclusive featurette below. “He won’t take a bribe, but if he needs to bend the rules a little bit to get that conviction or to get that arrest, he’ll do what he has to do. He kind of goes against the grain, which I think is great that they hired me, because that’s kind of how I live my life.”

Take a look at the video for more from Irby, including his take on life in the future, footage of the other characters snarking on Richard (and him throwing some shade of his own), and more…

ALMOST HUMAN’s Michael Ealy on Working with Karl Urban: ‘The Chemistry is Growing’

In two weeks (Update: Fox has opted to push the premiere back to Sunday, November 17th), Fox will debut its final new fall series, ALMOST HUMAN, a “buddy-cop” show set 35 years in the future — where crime rates have risen and every cop is partnered with an android — that explores what humanity really means. (To give you a sense of the tone/show, it was created by FRINGE showrunner J.H. Wyman and executive produced by J.J. Abrams who did FRINGE/LOST/ALIAS/STAR TREK, etc.)

At the center of the series are Karl Urban’s John Kennex, a newly reinstated detective who was injured in a massive police ambush and has only partnered with humans pre-injury, and Michael Ealy’s Dorian, an android (model DRN) whose kind was created to be as human as possible, but has since been taken off the streets…who have become reluctant new partners. And as with any show where there’s one key relationship, the actors are aware their chemistry needs to be on point.

“The chemistry is growing episode after episode,” Ealy told me last month (in the video below), after the duo had completed a handful of hours. “We still work every episode on how to make it better.”

What else did Ealy have to say about his working relationship with Urban? Take a look…

ALMOST HUMAN: J.J. Abrams and J.H. Wyman on Finding the Right Balance for Mythology Versus Procedural Elements

Comments Off on ALMOST HUMAN: J.J. Abrams and J.H. Wyman on Finding the Right Balance for Mythology Versus Procedural Elements

When you see the names of former FRINGE showrunner J.H. Wyman and J.J. Abrams (the man behind ALIAS, FRINGE, and LOST…not to mention the director of the recent STAR TREK reboots and the upcoming STAR WARS sequels) associated with the new Fox series, ALMOST HUMAN (a crime-drama set 35 years in the future where human cops are partnered with human-like androids), it’s easy to assume the series will be another FRINGE-like drama that draws heavily on serialized storylines.

But when both men sat down with reporters earlier this week at Abrams’ Bad Robot production offices, they reiterated that this show isn’t quite as similar to FRINGE as you might think.

ALMOST HUMAN Co-Showrunner Naren Shankar Exits

September 10, 2013 by

Comments Off on ALMOST HUMAN Co-Showrunner Naren Shankar Exits

ALMOST HUMAN co-showrunner Naren Shankar has exited the freshman Fox series, multiple sources have confirmed. Deadline was the first to break the news.

Shankar joined ALMOST HUMAN creator J.H. Wyman as co-showrunner of the drama after Fox picked up the pilot to series in May. Since then, Shankar has been an active part of the show’s promotion, going to Comic-Con and TCA to help tout the series. He told me last month that he was “delighted at the prospect of coming back into genre,” noting that he and Wyman had swapped episodes of FRINGE and CSI to watch in order to familiarize themselves with each other’s work.

Wyman is expected to run ALMOST HUMAN solo.

ALMOST HUMAN is set to debut Monday, November 4th at 8 PM on Fox.

ALMOST HUMAN: Michael Ealy on Playing an Android, What Drew Him to the Series, and More

September 6, 2013 by

Comments Off on ALMOST HUMAN: Michael Ealy on Playing an Android, What Drew Him to the Series, and More

There are a ton of procedurals on television these days — the good, the bad, the forgettable — but the new Fox drama, ALMOST HUMAN, is giving the genre its own little twist: it’s set in 2048, and in the future, law enforcement officials are paired up with android partners. (And since the series comes from former FRINGE showrunner J.H. Wyman, you can expect the future to be appropriately bizarre in all the right places.) Playing one of those androids — albeit a discontinued/bug-filled model whose big flaw is that he was made to feel — is Michael Ealy (Dorian), who has been a familiar face on television over the past few seasons, including starring in the USA Network series COMMON LAW.

I recently sat down with Ealy to get his take on playing an android, the show’s appeal, keeping up momentum, and more…
