AMERICAN IDOL will return for a second season on ABC, the network announced. New judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, as well as long-time series host Ryan Seacrest are also signed on for year two.
“We knew that AMERICAN IDOL on ABC would unleash an opportunity for singers from all walks of life to realize their dreams and that these incredible contestants would have America rooting for their success,” said Channing Dungey, president, ABC Entertainment, in a statement. “I am thrilled that Katy, Luke, Lionel and Ryan will be back to once again embark on this Idol journey with us to discover the next crop of inspiring talent.”
“’AMERICAN IDOL’s return on ABC has shown once again that viewers love to discover and support raw talent,” added Trish Kinane, IDOL showrunner/president of Entertainment Programming, FremantleMedia North America. “Our new judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie have brought huge credibility, energy and fun to the show this year, and we are so excited to continue the journey with Ryan Seacrest at the helm in the search for the next superstar.”
IDOL’s first season on ABC is currently ongoing, with the top 7 contestants performing this Sunday. (The series previously ran for 15 seasons on Fox.)

AMERICAN IDOL will come to an end with the upcoming 15th season (which will launch in January of 2016), but parting with a show that has meant so much to the network wasn’t a move they came to lightly.
“It’s not an easy decision; AMERICAN IDOL has been such a vital part of Fox for its run,” Gary Newman, Co-Chairman and CEO, Fox Television Group, said on a call with reporters. “We spent a lot of time talking with the producers about the future of AMERICAN IDOL, and collectively, we all arrived to the conclusion it was time to bring the show to an end. But we really wanted to do it in a way that felt special and celebratory, and treated the show the way it deserved to be treated. So next year, we’re announcing it is the final season. It’ll be a true season-long celebration. We’re already talking about surprises we can have for the fans to make it feel special, and to send it off in a way that is as significant as the run it has had on our network.”
Among those potential surprises for next season? The potential return of former judges.
AMERICAN IDOL to End with Season 15

Comments Off on AMERICAN IDOL to End with Season 15
AMERICAN IDOL will end with its upcoming 15th season, Fox announced.
The season — which will once again kick off in January — will be a “season-long celebratory event” and “feature host Ryan Seacrest and judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr., as they search for the final IDOL superstar and pay tribute to the past 14 seasons of amazingly talented contestants and the millions of fans who tweeted, texted and championed their IDOLs.”
IDOL underwent a significant shift this past season as it moved from two nights a week to one. And though the show is no longer the ratings giant it used to be, it’s a bit strange to think that we only have one season left to see it on our televisions.

With no X FACTOR or UTOPIA in sight, Fox is sans any huge reality blocks for the start of the upcoming season.
That also means that aside from the Sunday lineup — which is staying untouched — only GOTHAM, EMPIRE, and BONES are remaining in the same spots they occupied for the 2014-2015 season. (And NEW GIRL is off the schedule until January.)

AMERICAN IDOL season 14 auditions have started, and they’ve already produced a gem: this as-of-now unnamed male contestant who won a golden ticket, and then proceeded to do an encore of his song (Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me”) with judges Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr., backing up him up guitar/piano…as the man slow-danced with Jennifer Lopez.

The AMERICAN IDOL judging panel — and host Ryan Seacrest — will remain with the show next season, Fox officially confirmed.
“Jennifer [Lopez], Keith [Urban], Harry [Connick Jr.] and Ryan are the very best in the business at what they do, and I’m thrilled that they are returning to AMERICAN IDOL for another season,” said David Hill, Senior Executive Vice President, 21st Century Fox in a statement. “Each brings unique qualities and expertise to the team, but they all share the same passion for helping undiscovered singers achieve the American dream.”
“I am thrilled our consummate host, Mr. Ryan Seacrest, is returning for Season 14, together with Jennifer, Harry and Keith,” said AMERICAN IDOL creator and executive producer Simon Fuller. “Their interaction, warmth and experience made them an absolute joy to watch. I can’t wait to see their evolution together continue next season.”
