ARROW: Andrew Kreisberg on the Evolution of Summer Glau’s Isabel

Summer Glau may be best known for her kick-ass roles on shows like TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES, but when she landed the role of Isabel Rochev on ARROW, the writers weren’t entirely sure if they would be writing to those strengths.

“It’s funny, because when Summer took the part, I was up there on set with her, and she was like, ‘I’ve never done anything like this. I feel much better if I’m kicking somebody,'” ARROW executive producer Andrew Kreisberg told reporters last week. ” And I’m just like, ‘You’re so good. You should give yourself more credit. We wanted you because you’re such a good actress and you feel amazing in this part. Not because you can kick ass.’ And then [later] I got to call her and say, ‘Hey, we changed our minds. You get to kick ass.’ But in 18, when she does, it’s like, ‘Oh yeah.'”

ARROW: Andrew Kreisberg on Laurel’s New Insight into Oliver

ARROW’s Slade Wilson has been steadily laying the groundwork to properly get his revenge on Oliver, and in the last episode he delivered a double-whammy: he told Thea her birth father was actually Malcolm Merlyn, and informed Laurel that Oliver was The Arrow. And while viewers already got a little taste of how Thea will react to the news of her paternity, how Laurel will respond to the bombshell that was dropped on her is a bit of a question mark.

“I think Laurel has obviously had a very rough year,” ARROW executive producer Andrew Kreisberg told reporters. “When Slade told Laurel, he thought that was going to be yet another devastating death charge into Oliver’s life. And I think Laurel’s reaction into finding out the news — for one, not just taking it at face value, but being smart about it — and her emotional reaction to the news is surprising. I think most people assume she will react one way, and that she reacts a different way is great.”

Tonight’s episode of ARROW features the return of a familiar face: Helena Bertinelli, AKA the Huntress!

“Obviously we love Jessica [De Gouw (Helena/The Huntress)], and we love the character of Helena Bertinelli,” Marc Guggenheim told reporters. “And we had been talking throughout the year about bringing the Huntress back in a variety of different scenarios.”

As for what made now the right time for the Huntress to reppear, Guggenheim pointed out that what the regular characters were going through — specifically Laurel’s attempt to rebuild her life — made the stories mesh well together.
