With more than four decades of material to play with, Stephen King’s various novels and stories are continuously being adapted. (Since 2017, the list includes films THE DARK TOWER, IT, GERALD’S GAME, and 1922, while MR. MERCEDES just started its second season on television.) Hulu’s CASTLE ROCK is a bit of an abnormality, because while the series shares a character directly from King’s world (and it’s set in one of his most famous fictional locations), the story is an original one.

What happened to Ruth Deaver (Sissy Spacek)?
In the last episode of the newly-renewed CASTLE ROCK, the mysteriously bloody The Kid (Bill Skarsgård) seemingly caused mayhem in the Deaver home…and Alan Pangborn (Scott Glenn) couldn’t find his long-time love.
Of course, The Kid has his own reasons for wanting to destroy Alan’s life: the former sheriff saw the young man in the trunk of Shawshank Prison boss Dale Lacy’s (Terry O’Quinn) car, and let Dale lock him away for years. (Still unexplained is how The Kid managed to not age over all of the years he was held captive.)
In Wednesday’s episode, “The Queen,” Ruth spends some quality time with The Kid. Check out some photos from the hour…

Long before writers Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason co-created Hulu’s new drama CASTLE ROCK, they fell in love with Stephen King-like stories. (Their new series is set in the King multiverse, as they revisit what is going on now in the fictional town of Castle Rock.)
“I’ve always loved—I think we both have—stories of strange happenings in small towns,” Shaw shared with reporters in the video below. (Shaw is also a huge TWIN PEAKS fan who went viral after he wore a one-of-a-kind jacket to that show’s revival premiere.) “And just stories about secrets that lurk behind picket fences. In this case, the picket fence has been gone for a long time in Castle Rock…to a certain extent, I think we’ve always been obsessed with stories about the dysfunction of small towns.” Read more

Bill Skarsgård made a splash when he played Pennywise in 2017’s film adaptation of Stephen King’s IT, and he didn’t stray far in the aftermath. Skarsgård plays a vital—and mysterious—role in Hulu’s CASTLE ROCK, an original drama based on the terrifying town that played a key role in many of King’s stories.
But understandably, Skarsgård was initially a bit hesitant about signing on to another King project so close to IT. “I was a little bit reluctant to [join the show]—everything was very secretive about this project,” Skarsgård told reporters before the show’s Comic-Con panel. “I was reluctant because I was like, I had just done something in that world, and I don’t know how that interferes with that IT narrative. But as soon as they allowed me to read the pilot, that all changed. I fell in love with the show; I thought it was an amazingly strong pilot. I met Sam [Shaw] and Dusty [Thomason], the writers, and just loved those guys, so at that point it was, ‘I’m in. I really want to do this.'”
