GHOSTS returns on Thursday, February 2, as Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) try to stop their new assistant, Freddie (Mike Lane), from discovering the manor is, well, haunted.
But that’s not the only problem the ghosts have to figure out: Freddie sells his car—which means the ghost who is tied to it, Jessica (Nichole Sakura), could be banished to wherever the new owner decides to take it.

GHOSTS Showrunners Joe Port and Joe Wiseman Pick Their Favorite Season 1 Moments

GHOSTS, quite simply, is fantastic.
The CBS comedy—an adaptation of the British series by the same name—follows Sam (Rose McIver), a young woman whose life is turned upside when an accident leaves her with an unexpected gift: the ability to see (and communicate with) ghosts. That complicates things as she and her husband, Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar), try to turn the estate they inherited into a charming bed and breakfast…all while a gaggle of spirits (ranging from a Viking warrior to a ’90s finance bro) have some very strong opinions about what’s being done to their home.
Naturally, fun mayhem follows. Sam and the ghosts form a bond as they get to know each other. And though Jay can’t see what’s going on around him, thanks to a temporary possession and Sam as his go-between, he manages to forge his own special connections with their unexpected roommates, too.
The series—which finished up its first season in April; season 2 was ordered in January—came out of the gate strong, somehow balancing its ten-person ensemble with laugh-out-loud moments, emotional backstories, and unexpected mysteries. It’s the perfect dose of joy, whether you watch it weekly or saved it all to binge. (The first season is reairing Thursdays at 9/8c over the summer on CBS; additionally, the episodes are streaming on Paramount+.)
With production of season 2 just getting started, showrunners Joe Port and Joe Wiseman looked back at the first season of the series, sharing their favorite moments from each cast member (so far)—and offered a couple of teases about what’s to come…

For as many adventures as GHOSTS’ Hetty (Rebecca Wisocky) has had so far—from reuniting with her dead husband to accidentally possessing Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar)—one of the moments from her (pre-death) past could have the biggest impact on her afterlife going forward.
After Thorfinn (Devan Chandler Long) attempted to bond with Hetty, she was baffled and, frankly, repulsed—until she realized he was her childhood imaginary friend, because children can occasionally see ghosts.

Throughout the first season of the delightful CBS comedy GHOSTS, the writers have slowly revealed the backstory of the non-living characters inhabiting Woodstone Mansion—and also sharing the limitations to their life after death.
But with so many rules in play (be it possession or the ability to interact with physical objects), how many of these were plotted from the start versus being set as they come up?
GHOSTS: Utkarsh Ambudkar Previews Hetty Possessing Jay

GHOSTS’ Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) finds himself in the middle of the ghost mayhem on the Thursday, December 9 episode of the CBS comedy when he, well, becomes possessed.
“The circumstances around this episode—called ‘Possession,’ very appropriately—is Jay is not very handy around the house,” Ambudkar teases. “And he is trying to fix some electrical stuff in the home and Hetty gets a little too close, and gets a shock. And somehow, through the magic of the ghosts’ world, Hetty ends up in Jay’s body, sharing the body with him. They have to go about that episode together as one.”
The actor found out about the twist from the producers before he got the script when they asked him a simple question: ” “How do you feel about getting possessed by Hetty?”
“I was like, ‘Yeah, I mean, why are you asking me? You write it, I’ll do it,'” Ambudkar recalls. “And Rebecca [Wisocky, who plays Hetty] has created such a distinct, clear character vocally, physically, [and even] the point of view. All of the groundwork and the foundation for the character she laid [out], so if I could just get into that voice of Hetty, and then walk with a straight back, pretend that I’ve been in a corset for 200-plus years, I thought I had a pretty good chance of doing her justice.”
“It’s really the voice,” he continues. “Once you get into Hetty’s voice and her eyes those really big eyes of always sort of miffed of how she has to spend time with these people that are beneath her, it is really fun. There’s so many things Rebecca does that just make it easy to play Hetty. She really created a great character.”
As Jay and Hetty are inhabiting Jay’s body, he has a big task: Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay are trying to convince a wedding planner, played by Enrico Colantoni, to have the event at Woodstone Mansion.
“They need to be on their best behavior,” Ambudkar says. “They need to give the highest and best impression that they’re the right people for the job. Which is a little hard to do when you’re possessed by a ghost.”
For Ambudkar, he also had fun working with Colantoni. “Enrico Colantoni is like the best kind of collaborator,” he gushes. “I mean, he was just so warm and giving and really gracious with his time and energy and support. He was really just lovely to be around. Obviously as an actor, he’s a professional, so fully prepared ready to go. But also just like very giving. He was just really enjoyable to be around.”
“Also, you want to do a good job when someone like that is on set,” he continues. “So that helped a lot. Once I got over sort of being starstruck and I asked him all of the questions I wanted to ask him about JUST SHOOT ME and GALAXY QUEST, I calmed down and it was really fun working with him.”
