In the new Freevee series SPRUNG, a group of convicted criminals are stunned to learn they’ve been released early from prison…thanks to COVID-19.
Unsure what to make of the pandemic, and with the order to shelter-in-place, Rooster (Phillip Garcia) offers up the home of his mother, Barb (Martha Plimpton), to his fellow former inmates. With no place to go, Rooster’s former prison roommate Jack (Garret Dillahunt) and Jack’s (quasi-)prison girlfriend Gloria (Shakira Barrera) bunk with the family. (And, naturally, Barb convinces the group to help her pull off a few heists as “rent.”)

When Greg Garcia was developing SPRUNG—his first streaming series after creating network and cable comedies like MY NAME IS EARL, RAISING HOPE, THE GUEST BOOK, and YES, DEAR—he knew he wanted the series to stand apart from his previous work.
“I wanted the show to look different,” he explains in the video below. “We kind of shot it different than my other shows.”

RAISING HOPE Series Finale: Mike Mariano on the Ending, Kenny Loggins, and More

RAISING HOPE’s Mike Mariano opted to give the underrated Fox comedy proper closure in its season 4 finale in case the show wasn’t renewed for a fifth season (he bet correctly), and so the Chances ended on a quiet note…with the exception of Virginia’s father, Arnold, moving into Jimmy’s old room.
I spoke with Mariano about the ending, what season 5 ideas they had, getting Kenny Loggins, and more…

RAISING HOPE — always a quirky, underrated gem — will air its final episodes on Friday, April 4th, and fittingly, the hour is full of heart, laughs, and moments that will remind viewers why they fell in love with the Chances (and the show) to begin with.
In honor of the show’s end, I spoke with showrunner Mike Mariano about crafting a series finale (without knowing if the show was canceled), his favorite memories of the show, the episode they never got to, and more…
CBS Makes Its Rupert Grint and Stephen Fry Pilot, SUPER CLYDE, Available to Stream

Comments Off on CBS Makes Its Rupert Grint and Stephen Fry Pilot, SUPER CLYDE, Available to Stream
Last pilot season Greg Garcia was involved with two comedy pilot: THE MILLERS, a multi-cam show starring Will Arnett, Margo Martindale, and Beau Bridges that ended up getting picked up, and SUPER CLYDE, a single-cam comedy about a wannabe super hero starring Rupert Grint and Stephen Fry that ultimately was passed on. And while Garcia was thrilled THE MILLERS got picked up, when he and I spoke over the summer about his new comedy, he told me at the time he had hopes that one day the pilot for SUPER CLYDE would be made available for people to see.
“I still love it, I’m so proud of it,” Garcia told me at the time. “But the other one got picked. And I love this one. So there’s no losing, but it is a bummer. I was asking if we can try to get [the pilot] on somewhere. It’s got Stephen Fry who’s amazing. It’s got Rupert Grint. It’s got a built-in fanbase for these people. Let’s put it on Netflix, let’s put it on iTunes, I just want some people to see it, because I’m proud of it.”
And now, people can: CBS has made the pilot available on their website to stream.
I’m very curious, will you be giving it a shot, even with knowing it wasn’t picked up and that will almost certainly be it? Or are you going to pass on watching it?

Comments Off on THE MILLERS: HAPPY ENDINGS’ Eliza Coupe to Play Will Arnett’s Ex-Wife
Eliza Coupe has landed her first post-HAPPY ENDINGS TV gig: a rep for the show she’ll play the ex-wife of Will Arnett’s character, Nate, on the new CBS sitcom, THE MILLERS. EW.com was first to report the casting.
“[Coupe’s character is] an anchorwoman at the affiliate where [Nate] works,” THE MILLERS creator Greg Garcia shared. “So when we go to work, we’ll have that dynamic to play with.”
THE MILLERS follows Nate, a recently divorced man whose life is rocked when his parents split as well…and his mother moves in with him. The series also stars Margo Martindale and Beau Bridges.
THE MILLERS premieres Thursday, October 3rd at 8:30 PM on CBS.

Comments Off on RAISING HOPE Video Exclusive: Garret Dillahunt and Martha Plimpton Clean A Viewer’s Home — As Burt and Virginia
It’s increasingly hard to lure viewers to watch television — whether it’s in the traditional way (on TV) or via newer methods (DVR, online, iTunes, etc.) — so networks have had to step up their game to get noticed.
Enter: Fox’s RAISING HOPE.
RAISING HOPE: Creator Greg Garcia to Exit
March 4, 2013 by Marisa Roffman
Filed under Raising Hope, TV News
RAISING HOPE may have just gotten a season 4 renewal, but they’ll be losing a key team member: a rep for the series has confirmed that creator/showrunner Greg Garcia will not be returning. RAISING HOPE executive producer Mike Mariano will take over as the show’s boss next year. (Deadline was first to report Garcia’s exit/Mariano’s promotion.)
While Garcia may be off RAISING HOPE next year, he may still have a presence on television in the 2013-2014 season — under his new deal with CBS TV Studios, Garcia is currently working on two comedy pilots for CBS.
Are you sad Garcia will be leaving RAISING HOPE? Or are you excited to see what he might come up with next?
