ALMOST HUMAN: J.J. Abrams and J.H. Wyman on Finding the Right Balance for Mythology Versus Procedural Elements

Comments Off on ALMOST HUMAN: J.J. Abrams and J.H. Wyman on Finding the Right Balance for Mythology Versus Procedural Elements
When you see the names of former FRINGE showrunner J.H. Wyman and J.J. Abrams (the man behind ALIAS, FRINGE, and LOST…not to mention the director of the recent STAR TREK reboots and the upcoming STAR WARS sequels) associated with the new Fox series, ALMOST HUMAN (a crime-drama set 35 years in the future where human cops are partnered with human-like androids), it’s easy to assume the series will be another FRINGE-like drama that draws heavily on serialized storylines.
But when both men sat down with reporters earlier this week at Abrams’ Bad Robot production offices, they reiterated that this show isn’t quite as similar to FRINGE as you might think.
ALMOST HUMAN Co-Showrunner Naren Shankar Exits

Comments Off on ALMOST HUMAN Co-Showrunner Naren Shankar Exits
ALMOST HUMAN co-showrunner Naren Shankar has exited the freshman Fox series, multiple sources have confirmed. Deadline was the first to break the news.
Shankar joined ALMOST HUMAN creator J.H. Wyman as co-showrunner of the drama after Fox picked up the pilot to series in May. Since then, Shankar has been an active part of the show’s promotion, going to Comic-Con and TCA to help tout the series. He told me last month that he was “delighted at the prospect of coming back into genre,” noting that he and Wyman had swapped episodes of FRINGE and CSI to watch in order to familiarize themselves with each other’s work.
Wyman is expected to run ALMOST HUMAN solo.
ALMOST HUMAN is set to debut Monday, November 4th at 8 PM on Fox.

ALMOST HUMAN: Michael Ealy on Playing an Android, What Drew Him to the Series, and More

Comments Off on ALMOST HUMAN: Michael Ealy on Playing an Android, What Drew Him to the Series, and More
There are a ton of procedurals on television these days — the good, the bad, the forgettable — but the new Fox drama, ALMOST HUMAN, is giving the genre its own little twist: it’s set in 2048, and in the future, law enforcement officials are paired up with android partners. (And since the series comes from former FRINGE showrunner J.H. Wyman, you can expect the future to be appropriately bizarre in all the right places.) Playing one of those androids — albeit a discontinued/bug-filled model whose big flaw is that he was made to feel — is Michael Ealy (Dorian), who has been a familiar face on television over the past few seasons, including starring in the USA Network series COMMON LAW.
I recently sat down with Ealy to get his take on playing an android, the show’s appeal, keeping up momentum, and more…

ALMOST HUMAN (the new Fox drama from FRINGE showrunner J.H. Wyman) isn’t set to debut until November — though if you are heading to San Diego for Comic-Con this week, you could catch a screening of the pilot — but Fox is already teasing a bit of what you can expect.
Take a look at this teaser, appropriately dubbed, “Feel”…

Report: Fox Picks Up ALMOST HUMAN
May 8, 2013 by Marisa Roffman

It seems FRINGE showrunner J.H. Wyman will be back in business with Fox during the 2013-2014 season: Wyman just tweeted that the network has picked up his drama pilot, ALMOST HUMAN.
“Hey all!!!” Wyman wrote. “The pilot has been picked up!!!! Thank you FOX!”
ALMOST HUMAN is a futuristic “buddy cop” drama with a twist: in the future, cops are paired up with human-like androids. The series is set to star Karl Urban, Michael Ealy, and Minka Kelly.

With only 20 hours until the FRINGE finale, are you feeling ready for what’s going to go down?
I spoke with FRINGE showrunner J.H. Wyman to see what he could tease of the show’s final two hours, plus I asked him if there was anything he wished he had been able to do…
FRINGE: The Cast Talks About their Reaction to Reading ‘End of the Series’ in the Finale Script. Plus, J.H. Wyman on Reaching the End

The people behind FRINGE got a rare television gift — they got to go into the final season knowing it was the end.
And while all year was leading up this being it, being aware the end was coming and actually seeing the words “end of series” on a script are two entirely different matters.
I spoke with FRINGE stars John Noble (Walter), Joshua Jackson (Peter), Jasika Nicole (Astrid), and Lance Reddick (Broyles) about reading those series-ending words, plus showrunner J.H. Wyman about reaching the end…

Comments Off on FRINGE’s J.H. Wyman on the Donald Twist: ‘I Promise There Are Going to be a Lot of Reveals’
After months of teasing, Donald’s identity was revealed in the last new episode of FRINGE…and it was none other than September.
But since they have no idea where he is in 2036, where does Team Fringe go from here?
“Let’s just say that’s not the end of it,” FRINGE showrunner J.H. Wyman teased of the team discovering that their favorite Observer was the one helping Walter come up with a plot to take on the invaders.
Take a look at what else he had to say about the upcoming reveals…

FRINGE: J.H. Wyman Thanks the Fans
December 13, 2012 by Marisa Roffman

For FRINGE (and its fans), the journey has never been easy. The further the show dove into its mythology — and the core of what made it so special — the more the series struggled to retain viewers…and remain on air.
Enter the fans.
Sure, no series could be saved by fan love alone (as romantic as that notion might be, it’s still sadly “show business”), but the FRINGE fans raised their voices and got proactive: despite the FRINGE bosses telling them to not worry too much about the ratings, they sent in licorice and created Twitter hashtags to build buzz for the show. (To just name a few things.) And thanks to that, plus support from FRINGE’s network (Fox President of Entertainment Kevin Reilly has been a vocal supporter) and studio (Warner Bros. Television President Peter Roth is a big enough fan of the series that he was able to name his favorite episode/storyline during our interview at the 100th episode event), the cult favorite was able to conclude its story on its own terms.
Since all good things must come to an end, today is the last day of filming for FRINGE. It’s bittersweet and more than a little unreal that the series did reach episode 100, but it felt only fitting that on this day, I share with you FRINGE showrunner J.H. Wyman’s thanks to the fans…
FRINGE: J.H. Wyman Teases ‘Twists and Turns — A Lot of Things You Won’t See Coming’ in the Final Episodes

Comments Off on FRINGE: J.H. Wyman Teases ‘Twists and Turns — A Lot of Things You Won’t See Coming’ in the Final Episodes
For as emotionally charged as the first seven episodes of FRINGE’s final season have been, it certainly seems like the ride isn’t going to get smoother any time soon.
“I always said I wanted everybody to go through this journey with the characters at ground level,” FRINGE showrunner J.H. Wyman told me when I asked him for a tease about the final six hours of the series. “And feel what they feel and go through what they feel. And that’s what I’m going to do.”
Take a look for what else he had to say (there are twists and turns coming!), including a tease of an upcoming musical moment…
