Dick Wolf on LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT Being on the Cusp of Television History

Producer Dick Wolf is on the cusp of history—again.

In 2010, his series LAW & ORDER was tied with GUNSMOKE as the longest-running primetime drama show; instead of breaking the record with a 21st season, it was canceled. Now, LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT (a spinoff of L&O) is in its 20th season, tied with LAW & ORDER and GUNSMOKE, once again putting Wolf on the verge of making television history.

LAW & ORDER SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT: What You Missed on Your Summer Vacation

LAW & ORDER SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT season 20 kicks off tonight!

NBC’s description of the premiere: “Teenager Sam Conway (guest star Bryce Romero) shows evidence of rape but refuses to name his attacker. Meanwhile, Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Rollins (Kelli Giddish) confess to some major life changes. Also starring Ice T (Sgt. Fin Tutuola), Peter Scanavino (Det. Sonny Carisi) and Philip Winchester (ADA Peter Stone). Also guest starring Dylan Walsh (John Conway) and George Newbern (Dr. Al Pollack). In the conclusion to the season premiere, ADA Stone (Philip Winchester) blames himself for the shocking verdict in Sam’s case, and before Benson (Mariska Hargitay) can offer help, Sam (guest star Bryce Romero) makes a tragic decision. Also starring Ice T (Sgt. Fin Tutuola), Kelli Giddish (Det. Amanda Rollins) and Peter Scanavino (Det. Sonny Carisi). Law & Order: Special Victims Unit | 9pm on NBC

Season Finale: Sgt. Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and ADA Barba (Ra�l Esparza) take Johnny D (guest star Charles Halford) to trial for sex trafficking, rape, assault and kidnapping. But when Baby Noah’s adoption becomes entangled in the case, Benson fears for Noah’s future and his safety. In an intense courtroom showdown, the SVU will face a threat that could change the squad forever.

LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT Season 16 Premiere: ‘Girls Disappeared’ Photos

With LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT’s season 15 finale giving Benson a foster son and Amaro finding himself in trouble (again), season 16 is going to start off a bit differently: Olivia will have to balance her work with her newfound motherhood, while Amaro has been demoted/isn’t working with his fellow SVU officers.
