As LAW & ORDER wraps up its first revival season, showrunner Rick Eid tapped a familiar face to direct the finale, “Black and Blue”: Eriq La Salle.

As FBI’s fourth season starts to wind down, the drama is in an enviable position: In addition to its own success, it’s now a genuine franchise, with spinoffs FBI: MOST WANTED and newbie FBI: INTERNATIONAL rounding out the Tuesday night block on CBS.

“To me, personally, making the show feel—and the shows feel—grounded and real is incredibly important,” FBI showrunner Rick Eid notes. “I probably say that three times a week to the [FBI] writers: ‘Make it feel real’—it’s kind of my mantra.”

When FBI returns for its first original episode in 2021 (on Sunday, January 24), it’ll have one of the biggest lead-ins of the year: the AFC Championship Game.

When FBI concluded its second season—early, due to COVID-19 shutting down production—things were very different: Maggie (Missy Peregrym) was undercover and CHICAGO P.D.’s Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) was temporarily OA’s  (Zeeko Zaki) new partner.

CHICAGO P.D.’s seventh season may have ended early, but its makeshift closer certainly felt like a finale: Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) opted to not protect a racist cop who killed a young Black man, and faced the wrath of fellow officers who were enraged by his “betrayal.”

The cliffhanger, which aired in April, also put the NBC show in a position to naturally address the recent conversations about police reform, racial inequality, and Black Lives Matter head-on.
