Couch Madness: ‘Bombshell’

In honor of the NCAA tournament season, Give Me My Remote is bringing back our TV-centric bracket, pitting similarly titled episodes against each other: Couch Madness! (Credit for the excellent name goes to fellow reporter Chris Hayner.)
The seeding is simple: rather than quality of the hour, we’re going by air date (with the oldest episode getting the #1 slot and the newest getting #8). With Peak TV, this will not include every single show that has used this title; rather, we picked a selection from what was available.
The first round will run from Monday, March 11 through Friday, March 15. Round two will kick off on Monday, March 18, with the final face-off starting on Monday, March 25.
Last up? “Bombshell.” Keep reading for the bracket, episode descriptions (from IMDB), and the poll. (For the other episodes competing, check out all the brackets here!) Read more
10 Favorite Pilots of the 2010s

Pilots…are tough. Shows have to introduce a world, characters, and, in theory, set up where the show will go in the first season. But when they’re done correctly? Boy, they can be magic.
As the decade comes to a close, we look back at some of our favorite pilots over the past ten years…*
AWAKE (March 1, 2012)
NBC’s midseason launch in 2012 was one of the most ambitious network swings of the decade—more on SMASH later—and AWAKE was arguably the biggest risk. Though the series ended up being short-lived, AWAKE didn’t play it safe: it followed Michael Britten (Jason Isaacs), a detective who found himself living in two realities after a devastating crash…one where his wife perished, the other where his son did. The pilot deftly handled the overlying grief, while engaging a WTF-is-going-on mystery. The always-great Isaacs was particularly great as the show’s linchpin.

SMASH’s BOMBSHELL is Being Developed as a Real Musical

Comments Off on SMASH’s BOMBSHELL is Being Developed as a Real Musical
Cancellation was just the beginning for SMASH.
Though the series was axed by NBC in 2013 (after being shifted to Saturdays), the show has lived on in various performances throughout the years — the recent Actors Fund benefit that featured BOMBSHELL’s music (and the show’s cast performing it), as well as a lower-key HIT LIST performance. And now Universal Stage Productions has announced that they have started production on a real BOMBSHELL musical.
“There is a still a lot of love for ‘Smash’ and a rabid fan base out there, and we’re thrilled to be able to keep the dream alive as we work towards bringing ‘Bombshell’ to theatre audiences,” said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman of NBC Entertainment, in a statement. “‘Smash’ was ambitious because every episode was a complicated musical for television and we also built the foundation of the musical-within-the-musical about Marilyn’s endlessly fascinating and tumultuous life. Over the course of two seasons an entire ‘Bombshell’ score was written to service ‘Smash’ storylines, and now that show will have a chance to stand on its own.”
“We are so thrilled that ‘Smash’ isn’t over and that ‘Bombshell’ gets to live on,” said SMASH producer Craig Zadan, who, alongside, Neil Meron, will serve as the lead producers of BOMBSHELL. “The Emmy-nominated songs by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, including the iconic ‘Let Me Be Your Star,’ are every bit the caliber of their Tony- and Grammy-winning Broadway work. The Actors Fund benefit reinforced how alive this material is on stage and how much the audience wants to see the Marilyn Monroe musical in its entirety.”
Added Meron: “As life imitates art, Joshua Bergasse, our brilliant Emmy-winning choreographer from ‘Smash,’ actually made his Broadway debut this season as a choreographer and was nominated for a Tony Award. Now he will get the chance to reimagine his exhilarating ‘Bombshell’ dances for the theatre.”
And while the cast was phenomenal in their respective BOMBSHELL roles, NBC cautions “no casting has been announced and no one from the cast of “Smash” is involved in the stage musical at this point.”
Will you see BOMBSHELL?

NBC Cancels SMASH

It’s official: after being banished to Saturdays (and airing its finale on a random Sunday), SMASH won’t be returning to NBC for a third season.
SMASH was one of my favorite pilots last year, and it’s been a rough ride since then. Hopefully when it concludes on May 26th, there will be enough closure.

I spoke with new SMASH boss Josh Safran (who ran GOSSIP GIRL for several years) about moving from fan of the series to showrunner, what storyline got cut, what he’s excited about, and more…
