THE AFFAIR: Sarah Treem on the Potential Pressure for a Golden Globe Winning Show
January 16, 2015 by Marisa Roffman
THE AFFAIR was a big winner at last weekend’s Golden Globes, and showrunner Sarah Treem acknowledged she was aware of the added pressure the show’s win could bring.
“I mean, to be quite honest, we had some conversation about that beforehand,” Treem said during a Showtime TCA panel earlier this week. “And I think there’s a lot of pressure on the second season of a freshman show anyway, and the second season of a freshman show that wins the Golden Globe is big, and believe me, I feel that. But I think this show’s fortunate because we had always conceived of the show of at least three seasons, and we had thought about all three seasons and what we were going to try to do with it. So I feel that the second season will not be a panicked response to the Golden Globe win, hopefully. I think we’re going to proceed on course. I think the second season will be better than the first just because the second season emotions are better than the first. The first season is sort of a rough draft, and the second season you get to polish. So I’m hopeful that we will not crumble under pressure.”

It was another great year for television, and to celebrate that, I made my list of the top shows in 2014.
As per usual, my annual disclaimer: I literally can’t watch every show, and so some shows that probably should be here (like TRANSPARENT) didn’t make the cut because I couldn’t catch up in time. (But on the bright side, I caught up on every show I name-checked last year as not being caught up on.)
So, these are my top shows of the year…
And have you seen Sarah and Kelly’s lists, too? Check out Sarah’s top shows and top episodes, as well as Kelly’s top shows and top episodes.
What was your favorite show this year?

Showtime Renews HOMELAND and THE AFFAIR

Both HOMELAND and THE AFFAIR will return in 2015, Showtime announced.
HOMELAND was picked up for a 12-episode fifth season. THE AFFAIR was picked up for a 10-episode second season.
“In its fourth season, HOMELAND has brilliantly reinvented itself. It continues to capture the attention of a devoted fan base, and has provided an enviable platform for the successful launch of THE AFFAIR,” said David Nevins, President, Showtime Networks Inc., in a statement. “With thought-provoking, relevant and addictive storylines, both series have been embraced, dissected and much debated week after week. We’re excited to see more from these complex shows in 2015.”

THE AFFAIR: Joshua Jackson on the Show’s Unique Format
October 19, 2014 by Marisa Roffman
Filed under #1 featured, The Affair
Showtime’s new series, THE AFFAIR, is unlike anything on television: yes, the show follows the unfolding of an affair — told via flashbacks while its two participants, Noah and Alison, are questioned individually about what led to someone’s death — but what viewers see is directly relating to how the two characters remember what went down. The slight (and occasionally, major) differences help make the drama a show you can’t look away from.
But Alison and Noah aren’t the only two characters whose story we’re seeing in THE AFFAIR: viewers are also introduced to their spouses, Cole and Helen, who we only know from what other characters observe.
I spoke with THE AFFAIR star Joshua Jackson (Cole) about the show’s unique format, playing a character who exists (as of now) solely in other people’s perspective, and more…

Showtime has made some changes to its fall schedule: HOMELAND’s fourth season will now kick off with its first two episodes airing back-to-back on October 5th, starting at 9 PM.
Additionally, the network’s new Dominic West/Ruth Wilson/Maura Tierney/Joshua Jackson-led series, THE AFFAIR — which, by the way, is just incredible — will launch a week earlier than planned — it will now debut on October 12th at 10 PM.
