Pilots…are tough. Shows have to introduce a world, characters, and, in theory, set up where the show will go in the first season. But when they’re done correctly? Boy, they can be magic.
As the decade comes to a close, we look back at some of our favorite pilots over the past ten years…*
AWAKE (March 1, 2012)
NBC’s midseason launch in 2012 was one of the most ambitious network swings of the decade—more on SMASH later—and AWAKE was arguably the biggest risk. Though the series ended up being short-lived, AWAKE didn’t play it safe: it followed Michael Britten (Jason Isaacs), a detective who found himself living in two realities after a devastating crash…one where his wife perished, the other where his son did. The pilot deftly handled the overlying grief, while engaging a WTF-is-going-on mystery. The always-great Isaacs was particularly great as the show’s linchpin.

After two weeks of Give Me My Remote readers nominating their television favorites from the past year, it’s time to vote for the 5th Annual GMMR TV Awards!
Most of the categories have five nominees, but due to ties, the number can vary per topic. (And, as a reminder, each category can only have two nominees per show, so only the top two vote-getters from any series moved forward to the voting round.)
Next up: “Worst Series Finale (Unplanned).”

With THE FOLLOWING ending its run on Fox, co-showrunner Alexi Hawley has already lined up his next job: he’s re-joined CASTLE for its upcoming eighth season, and he’s been promoted to co-showrunner.
Hawley — who worked on the ABC drama from 2009-2012, and penned nine episodes during that time (including the excellent hour, “Kill Shot”) — will run the show with newly-minted showrunner, Terence Paul Winter. (Current CASTLE showrunner David Amann is stepping down after one year as showrunner.)
CASTLE’s season finale airs this Monday at 10 PM on ABC.

Fox has reportedly opted to cancel THE FOLLOWING. Reps for the network and THE FOLLOWING’s studio, WB, declined comment.
The Kevin Bacon-led series is in the midst of its third season. The series recently made a drastic change when it killed off its longest-running big bad, and has focused on “smaller” arcs this season. (Update: Reports indicate the show may be shopped elsewhere.)

THE FOLLOWING’s Ryan Hardy can’t catch a break.
After losing his twisted “soulmate,” Joe, Ryan (a recovering alcoholic) drank a bit of his sorrows away — much to the chagrin of his girlfriend, Gwen. And in this exclusive clip from tonight’s hour, “Demons,” Gwen has had enough of his angst, and decides to leave Ryan.

Joe Carroll is potentially in the final days of his life on THE FOLLOWING, and now that he knows that Ryan Hardy has no intention of attending his execution, Joe’s going to lash out.
“You will see Joe act out in a way as a result of the fact that Ryan says he’s not coming,” THE FOLLOWING co-showrunner Brett Mahoney shared. “Joe likes to get his way. He is not one who is going to take anything lying down. So, he has a little bit of of a flip-out…it does not go well.”

THE FOLLOWING’s Ryan Hardy is in trouble.
Though Ryan started off the year in a better place, his composure has been gradually slipping…and having to reunite with Joe Carroll for his current case only accelerated the process. And now with Ryan struggling to maintain his composure (no thanks to some very unsettling Joe-centric dreams) while there’s a new madman, Theo, on the loose, his sanity is very much in jeopardy. Plus, Theo is very unhappy with Ryan being so close on his tail (and for “forcing” Theo to get rid of his family to go on the run), and Joe is not pleased that Ryan refuses to come to his execution, so poor Ryan has a lot on his plate.
I spoke with THE FOLLOWING co-showrunner Brett Mahoney about Ryan’s spiral (and how it impacts his ability as an agent), the return of Mark, Theo and Joe’s anger, the “very big and cinematic” finale, and much more…
