Julie Plec on Syncing Up THE VAMPIRE DIARIES and THE ORIGINALS, and Retelling THE ORIGINALS’ Backdoor Pilot
August 9, 2013 by Marisa Roffman

THE ORIGINALS may have made its debut as a backdoor pilot during last season of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, but if potential new viewers missed that, the CW series has a creative way of catching everyone up on what went down — the official first episode of THE ORIGINALS will be retelling what happened in “The Originals” episode of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES from Elijah’s point of view.
“It’s so cool, because it tells you everything that happens when we were watching Klaus do his thing, and meet up with Marcel, and try to get to the bottom of his own mystery [in the backdoor pilot],” THE ORIGINALS/THE VAMPIRE DIARIES executive producer Julie Plec told reporters after the Television Critics Association panel for her new series. “It’s the story of a brother coming into town to try and figure out what happened with his younger, black sheep brother. So he’s kind of playing detective a bit. We get to see scenes that existed in the [backdoor] pilot, but more from Elijah’s point of view. And he believes when he learns of [Hayley’s] pregnancy that it will be that easy to convince his brother to jump on board. So to watch Elijah jump on board and declare how simple it will be, and then to have Klaus reject the baby will be [Elijah’s] powerful moment, as opposed to the pilot where it was Klaus’ powerful moment…and by the last act, we’re moving past that night, and everything we see is new, and it tees up the series.”
Julie Plec on Keeping the Continuity Between THE VAMPIRE DIARIES and THE ORIGINALS

Comments Off on Julie Plec on Keeping the Continuity Between THE VAMPIRE DIARIES and THE ORIGINALS
For years, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES has played by its own rules, where time didn’t need to necessarily to reflect what was going on in the real world, and they could move through things at their own pace. But now with the addition of the show’s new spinoff, THE ORIGINALS, things will be complicated a bit as the shows have the potential to share characters…and as such both will need to remain close in time so continuity isn’t thrown off-kilter.
At Comic-Con, I asked THE VAMPIRE DIARIES/THE ORIGINALS executive producer Julie Plec about maintaining that delicate balance…

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES: Julie Plec Teases THE ORIGINALS Backdoor Spinoff, Potential Crossovers, and More
April 24, 2013 by Marisa Roffman
Filed under #1 featured, The Originals, The Vampire Diaries
About three and a half months after the idea was first made public, THE ORIGINALS, the backdoor pilot for a potential THE VAMPIRE DIARIES spinoff, is finally airing tomorrow night.
“Klaus has gotten wind of witches in New Orleans making a move against him and of course he doesn’t like that, and is especially paranoid because of all the Silas shenanigans, and so he heads off to get to the bottom of that mystery,” THE VAMPIRE DIARIES executive producer Julie Plec teased of what kicks off the episode. “And Elijah, believing his brother to be up to something, follows him to try and get to the bottom of that mystery. And as the brothers are in New Orleans, we see they have a deep, rich history there. In fact, all the Original family, which at the time was Klaus, Elijah, Rebekah, and Kol, lived there off and on for several centuries and were part of the original founders of New Orleans; [they] laid the original bricks of the French Quarter. They have a history there, and as Elijah says at the end of the episode, ‘I can count on one hand the amount of times we were happy as a family and that was one of them.'”
Of course, things aren’t entirely smooth in New Orleans.

Comments Off on THE VAMPIRE DIARIES: Leah Pipes Cast in THE ORIGINALS Backdoor Pilot
THE VAMPIRE DIARIES’ backdoor pilot, THE ORIGINALS, has found a human occupant: with the rest of the cast playing vampires, werewolves, and witches, a rep for CW has confirmed that Leah Pipes has nabbed the first human role in the upcoming April episode of TVD that could potentially be spun off into its own show.
According to The Hollywood Reporter (who was first to report the casting), Pipes will play Camille, “a college psychology student fascinated by the study of human behavior unaware of the supernatural universe that exists around her.”
Pipes joins THE VAMPIRE DIARIES stars Joseph Morgan (Klaus), Phoebe Tonkin (Hayley), and Daniel Gillies (Elijah), as well as TVD newbies Charles Michael Davis (Marcel), Daniella Pineda (Sophie), and Danielle Campbell (Davina) in the potential spinoff.

And we have early renewals: The CW has given pickups to ARROW, SUPERNATURAL, and THE VAMPIRE DIARIES!
“We said last year that one of our goals was to establish building blocks to grow on, and now with our new hit ARROW and fan favorite SUPERNATURAL on Wednesday night, and the continued success of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES on Thursday, we’ve been able to do that,” said Mark Pedowitz, President, The CW in a statement. “Not only do ARROW, SUPERNATURAL, and THE VAMPIRE DIARIES perform well on-air, they’re also extremely successful for us both digitally and socially. I’m thrilled to have all three shows returning to our schedule next season.”

THE ORIGINALS — the potential spinoff of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES — has cast another witch: sources confirm that Danielle Campbell has landed a role in the backdoor pilot that is set to debut as an April episode of The CW hit.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Campbell will play Davina, whose “innocence about the way the world works makes her equal parts wondrous and dangerous. She’s delicate and ethereal but not without her own demons.”
Joining Campbell in the potential spinoff are THE VAMPIRE DIARIES stars Joseph Morgan (Klaus), Phoebe Tonkin (Hayley), and Daniel Gillies (Elijah), as well as TVD newbies Charles Michael Davis (Marcel) and Daniella Pineda (Sophie).

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES: Daniella Pineda Cast in THE ORIGINALS Backdoor Pilot

Comments Off on THE VAMPIRE DIARIES: Daniella Pineda Cast in THE ORIGINALS Backdoor Pilot
There has been a lot of casting news for THE ORIGINALS (the potential VAMPIRE DIARIES spinoff which will premiere as a backdoor pilot this spring), but we now have news about our first actor/character who didn’t originate from The CW series: a CW rep has confirmed that Daniella Pineda will appear in THE ORIGINALS’ backdoor pilot as Sophie. (Naturally, Sophie isn’t just a normal girl — she’s a witch.)
According to Deadline (who was first to report the casting of Pineda), Sophie’s magic “has been silenced but not snuffed. A leader and a sexy, sharp-tongued social force, she is quietly sowing the seeds of a revolution amongst her peers.” Wonder which Original sibling she might find an ally in…
THE ORIGINALS’ backdoor pilot is set to air during THE VAMPIRE DIARIES’ April 25th episode. Are you excited to see what this new show might be?
