“Hallelujah” is a song that has been covered dozens of times—including arguably its most popular rendition—so THE VOICE season 16 finalist Maelyn Jarmon took quite a risk by picking it as one of her finale songs. But, boy, it paid off.

THE VOICE is making a major change to its competition format—and it’ll kick off with the Monday, April 15 episode.
The “Live Cross Battles” stage of the competition—which replaces the “Knockouts,” which has been a fixture on the series since season 7—will find the season 16 coaches (Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, John Legend, and Kelly Clarkson) going head-to-head with each other, selecting one artist/group from their team to compete against a contestant from another team. America will vote on the winner of each round to move forward to the Top 24 live show.

THE VOICE kicked off its Monday, March 11 episode with one of the best auditions of the night: Beth Griffith-Manley, the former background singer, who did her rendition of “Until You Come Back to Me.”
And she was impressed the coaches—John Legend and Kelly Clarkson turned their chairs for her.

The two-hour episode concluded with Jej Vinson, a 22-year-old music student, whose rendition of Drake’s “Passionfruit” earned him a spot on the show—and a four-chair turn from coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, John Legend, and Kelly Clarkson.

Bebe Rexha has joined THE VOICE as the Comeback Stage coach. (Kelsea Ballerini filled that role for contestants during its inaugural run in season 15; she’s Team Kelly’s Battle Round mentor this year.)
“We really liked and saw a lot of interest and viewership in it,” THE VOICE executive producer Audrey Morrissey told reporters. However, after its first go-round, they made some adjustments: “There were some criticisms of it: How could somebody who didn’t get a chair turned in the blinds all of a sudden be in the live show, while people who made it further didn’t get that opportunity? We really heard that and saw that and tweaked it. This season, people that don’t advance from every round [will] get pulled into the comeback stage.”
