Comments Off on THE VOICE: Ben Allen on Covering Blake Shelton’s ‘All About Tonight’
THE VOICE’s Ben Allen moved from Team Blake to Team Gwen, but he found a way to honor both with his Top 9 performance of Blake Shelton‘s “All About Tonight.”
“I’m so grateful that it was really well-received,” Allen told reporters in the video below. “I felt like it was a bit of a risk, but it’s one that that I knew that I wanted to take. I felt like given the circumstance of going from Blake’s team to Gwen’s team [and] their relationship and engagement, and I just thought it was a great time to kind of pay tribute to the both of them and thank them for what they’ve done for me on the show.”

THE VOICE: Ian Flanigan on Covering ‘Angel’

For his THE VOICE Top 9 performance, Team Blake’s Ian Flanigan had an usual song to sing: Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel.”
With Flanigan’s voice, he was able to give the song a unique twist—something Kelly Clarkson anticipated when she suggested the song to his coach, Blake Shelton.
“I found out that Kelly suggested it, and took it a little more serious,” Flanigan told reporters in the video below. “Just because when somebody of that caliber is taking the time to think of something that could be great for you, you instantly respect the decision…I was definitely caught off-guard by that suggestion, but at the same time, being an artist, I want to be pushed out of my comfort zone and grow from it. So every song is a growing experience and I was really grateful to be able to perform that tonight.”

THE VOICE: Taryn Papa on Winning the Four-Way Knockout

With her four-way Knockout victory, THE VOICE’s Taryn Papa has a potential unexpected edge as the Top 17 gets cut to become the Top 9: She’s the only remaining contestant whose fans have kept her on the show through voting. (Everyone else was picked by their coaches to make it through to the live rounds.)
After Monday’s performance, Papa admitted to reporters she hadn’t considered that yet. “The only thing I’ve thought about is the fact that my fans have already voted means I don’t have to answer all my DMs on how to vote again,” she joked in the video below. “That was really good because that’s something that’s been blowing my phone up. I haven’t really thought about that [potential edge]. That’s a really interesting.”
The Team Blake member was also clearly stunned by her victory on Monday night, and she shared it didn’t exactly cease when she got off-camera. “I had to collect myself,” she admitted. “One of the production assistants was like, ‘Get it together. You have to sing…you have to be professional now,’ because I was [hyperventilating.]”

When it came time for the Live Shows to kick off, THE VOICE contestant Payge Turner had a special song up her sleeve: a moody cover of *NSYNC’s “It’s Gonna Be Me.”
The tune, inspired by the Kevin Garrett cover, slowed down the heavily pop song and transformed it to a moody, R&B ballad; in fact, Turner was so inspired by it, she had pegged it as a possibility before she even did her Blind Audition performance.
“The arrangement that I did today, actually, is the fundamental basis of what Kevin Garrett did; it’s got the same…bones,” Turner, who is on Team Gwen, told reporters after the show in the video below. “But what I brought to the song was a little bit of Payge Turner. I brought a little funk to it. And incorporating the guitar was a bold move, but at the same time was what I needed to do.”

After the THE VOICE producers found themselves navigating uncharted waters last season (as COVID-19 shut down production and forced the final weeks of the show to be filmed remotely), showrunner Audrey Morrissey had a big goal for the new year: “We’re just trying to keep the show the [same] show everybody loves. That’s our main focus.”
