Philip Seymour Hoffman Dead at 46

Philip Seymour Hoffman has died of a suspected drug overdose. He was 46.
In addition to Hoffman’s expansive film career — which included an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in CAPOTE — he was set to headline a new Showtime series, HAPPYISH, this year. (It’s bittersweet now that the trailer critics saw at TCA showed that series to have more promise than most other series that were showcased the rest of the tour.)
A very sad day, and condolences to his family, loved ones, coworkers, and fans.
Update (12:54 PM PT): Showtime has released a statement: “Philip Seymour Hoffman was one of our generation’s finest and most brilliant actors. He was also a gifted comedic talent. It was a great privilege and pleasure to work with him and we are all absolutely devastated by this sudden loss. Our thoughts go out to his family at this very difficult time.”

ABC handed out good news to three of its freshman comedies and bad news to another: THE GOLDBERGS and TROPHY WIFE have been picked up for full first seasons (which means they got an additional nine episodes ordered), while SUPER FUN NIGHT got an additional four episodes ordered for its freshman run.
The only bad news of the night comes for BACK IN THE GAME. Co-creator Robb Cullen tweeted: “So, ABC has decided NOT 2 move forward w @BackInTheGameTV 2 all of u fangles and friends, I can’t begin 2 thank u for all of ur support.”
Are you happy with the shows that are continuing? Bummed by BACK IN THE GAME not getting more episodes?

And we have early renewals: The CW has given pickups to ARROW, SUPERNATURAL, and THE VAMPIRE DIARIES!
“We said last year that one of our goals was to establish building blocks to grow on, and now with our new hit ARROW and fan favorite SUPERNATURAL on Wednesday night, and the continued success of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES on Thursday, we’ve been able to do that,” said Mark Pedowitz, President, The CW in a statement. “Not only do ARROW, SUPERNATURAL, and THE VAMPIRE DIARIES perform well on-air, they’re also extremely successful for us both digitally and socially. I’m thrilled to have all three shows returning to our schedule next season.”

LEVERAGE said its bittersweet goodbye this week as TNT aired “The Long Goodbye Job”…but if the people behind the show have their way, the story may not be totally over.

TNT Cancels LEVERAGE

When I spoke with LEVERAGE executive producer Dean Devlin a few weeks ago, he spoke about crafting next week’s season finale as also a potential series finale since its fate on TNT was up in the air. And now, there’s some not great news.
“It has been decided today that this Tuesday’s episode of Leverage ‘The Long Goodbye Job’ will be the series finale as TNT has decided not to renew the show for a sixth season,” Devlin wrote in a letter that was posted on leveragefans.com. “I’m so happy we were able to film the series finale we had always envisioned and I’m happy we’re able to present it on Christmas as our gift to you. It’s a bittersweet goodbye.”
Are you bummed out that LEVERAGE won’t continue? Or are you at least pleased it’ll end with the series finale they always planned?

ABC Schedules Original Episodes of HAPPY ENDINGS and DON’T TRUST THE B—- IN APARTMENT 23 on January 6th, Pulls 666 PARK AVE

When ABC announced that they wouldn’t be picking up the back nine for 666 PARK AVENUE, the plan was to have all 13 filmed episodes air. Now, it seems that might not be the case.
An ABC press release has come out saying that new episodes of HAPPY ENDINGS and DON’T TRUST THE B—- IN APARTMENT 23 will air in the Sunday at 10 PM slot on January 6, 2013. There’s no word on whether the comedies will continue there beyond that point (they each have episodes that weren’t set to fit into their current airing order) or 666 PARK AVE will join the Sunday lineup at a later point, but the new drama RED WIDOW is set to take over that spot on March 3, 2013.
I reached out to the ABC publicists to find out if there was any plan to air the remaining episodes of 666 PARK AVE (which have already been shot), and if they have any news to share, I’ll be sure to update you.
UPDATE 2:09 PM PT: Sources confirm the four remaining episodes of 666 PARK AVENUE have been pulled from their Sunday slot will be scheduled for a TBD summer run.
In the meantime, are you at least happy to get new comedy episodes?

With NBC pulling their scheduled episodes of GO ON and THE NEW NORMAL tonight for a special on Hurricane Sandy, ABC has now joined the mix and pulled their planned episode of PRIVATE PRACTICE.
“Just got word that PP will not air tonight due to specials news coverage of Sandy,” PRIVATE PRACTICE creator Shonda Rhimes tweeted earlier today.
And due to the upcoming election, that will push tonight’s scheduled episode back two weeks: “The PP episode will air AFTER the election in two weeks!”
