Fox Cancels UTOPIA

Fox has pulled the plug on UTOPIA.

The reality series aired its last episode on Halloween, and the previously scheduled Friday installments will be replaced with MASTERCHEF JUNIOR reruns. As for the live feeds from the UTOPIA compound, they’ll stop running later today.

Utopia | 8pm on Fox

From unscripted mastermind John de Mol, and based on the hit Dutch television series of the same name, UTOPIA asks the question: “If you could restart the world, what would you do differently?” This bold unscripted series follows 15 pioneering Americans who choose to leave their everyday lives and move to a remote location, where they come face-to-face with the ultimate adventure: creating their own civilization from scratch. UTOPIA: Red on His Elimination, His Time on the Show, and Who He’ll Miss

UTOPIA has lost a number of participants in its first five weeks of filming (due to injuries, breaking rules, and opting out), but the contestants finally had control over an exit when they had the chance to vote out the show’s first contestant in Friday’s episode…and handyman, Red Vanwinkle was the first person who got the boot.

UTOPIA: Red Talks Volunteering to Be Up for Elimination in Place of Bri

On Tuesday’s episode of UTOPIA, the pioneers found themselves in a big of tough spot: when the pioneers set out to pick their two nominated contestants who should be up for elimination, there was a tie between second and third placed vote-getters Bri and Red. (Bella was in first place, solo.) Red stepped up and volunteered to take Bri’s place in the final voting round for the month, but it ended up being only a temporary reprieve: Bri was America’s choice to be put up for elimination. (The results of the vote will be revealed on the episode of UTOPIA that airs on Fox tonight.)

But Red has no regrets about trying to save Bri from being up for elimination.

UTOPIA to Air on Fridays Only, MASTERCHEF JUNIOR to Air on Tuesdays

Fox has made a change to its fall schedule: starting next week UTOPIA will air only on Fridays. Starting in November, MASTERCHEF JUNIOR will air in UTOPIA’s former Tuesday time period. (8 PM, before NEW GIRL/THE MINDY PROJECT.)

Meet UTOPIA Narrator Dan Piraro!

UTOPIA: Get a Peek Inside the New Fox Series

Late last month, Fox invited some reporters to UTOPIA’s Southern California filming location to check out the environment the contestants will be living in for, potentially, a year.

When we arrived, we got a tour of the space which was built for the show — it is now home to animals, a sizable lake, a waterfall, a barn-like structure, and 129 robotic cameras to capture every movement — and a few of us got the chance to experience a (slight) taste of what the contestants will go through when we spent the night.

And it was kind of crazy. (Fun crazy. But crazy. There aren’t many work events that include reporters taking row boat rides, deciding at midnight to “climb” — barely — to the top of a waterfall, or epic games of Jenga.)

UTOPIA officially premieres this Sunday on Fox (though the live feeds are going 24/7 now), but if you’re curious to get a bit of a deeper dive into the world — and what they have at their disposal — check out some photos (and additional insight) from inside UTOPIA…

UTOPIA Contestant to Be Replaced

UTOPIA’s season 1 cast has already undergone a change.

Andrea Cox — the “Christian who drops the f-bomb” and “self-proclaimed born-again virgin” — didn’t enter the UTOPIA complex when production started on the show, Fox announced. The statement from FOX Broadcasting Company, Talpa Media USA and UTOPIA Producers:

“Due to violation of production policies, Andrea Cox will not enter UTOPIA today with the other 14 pioneers. Replacement details will be announced.”

UTOPIA’s live stream is up now. The official series premiere event kicks off on Sunday, September 7th at 8 PM on Fox.
