The Best of Neil Patrick Harris on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE

My love for all things Neil Patrick Harris have been well documented here on this site. But after last night’s hosting gig of SNL, my love has only grown. I had not doubt that Neil was going to be fantastic, but he so committed to each and every skit that he really stood out as one of the best hosts in quite some time.
I was surprised that with the exception of the brief ‘Seasons of Love’ chorus, Neil didn’t sing. Missed opportunity. Oh well, next time. And I am 100% certain there will be a next time.
Here are a few of my favorite skits from last night…
Neil Patrick Harris Saves Broadway
My inner theater geeked absolutely loved this skit featuring some of Broadway’s biggest stars trying to save the Great White Way. Neil as RENT’s Mark was great. I wish I had seen NPH when he played that role on Broadway.
The Today Show with Kathie Lee & Hoda
Kristin Wiig’s Kathie Lee Gifford was spot on. She captured every single one of Kathie Lee’s over-the-top, annoying as all get out habits. As is usually the case with SNL, the skit went way too long, but it was saved beautifully in the end with NPH’s role as a fitness instructor. (And thrust, and grapevine, and thrust).
Neil Patrick Harris’ Opening Monologue
Again, while I had hoped for some singing, Neil’s rant on Fred Savage was too funny. And a cameo by ‘Mark Wahlberg’ is never a bad thing.
“And I turned to my girlfriend back then and I was like ‘what is he allergic to timing’ and she was like ‘why won’t you kiss me’ and I was like ‘later…I mean look at this guy?’. That was a long time ago.” HA HA HA
The Doogie Hower Orchestra
NBC isn’t providing a clip of the best skit of the night, the Digital Short featuring the Doogie Hower Orchestra. I’m sure it has something to do with the music rights. But for the time being this version is still available on YouTube, so watch while you can.

While I was sorely disappointed by the lack of a Dr Horrible sketch, I thought he was amazing! I was outright grinning every time he came on the stage. And though I wasn’t sure if anyone outside of NYC would get all the references in the Broadway sketch I, as a born and bred NYer, loved every second of it! If only he had sung every one of his lines – then it would have been just perfect! ;0)
I absolutely adored NPH hosting SNL. You’re right, he was downright AMAZING in every single sketch. The Doogie orchestra made me giggle, and the Broadway bit blew me away because I’m a musical freak and I knew each and every character and song (and NPH as Mark was also amazing!). Sadly NBC doesn’t want me to see these clips, so I’m going to go onto YouTube and see if I can find any of the others up there yet to relive.

I had the amazing luck to be able to get standby tickets for the show last night. And yes, the love for NPH definitely grew. He bumped Zachary Levi from my #2 spot and is knocking on the door of JKras’s #1 spot. 🙂
Before Neil had to introduce Taylor Swift, he would give her thumbs-up or waved to the crowd. He was just so happy to be there.
The single glistening tear at the end of the Doogie Howser Orchestra skit was priceless.
I had sore face muscles from all the smiling. For me, the orchestra bit was just priceless.
